"Reel Big Fish, you tour a lot with them, and their tunes are notoriously happy"
What tunes was he talking about? Was it Everything Sucks, or Drunk Again, or Hate You, or Another F.U. Song, or Your Guts (I Hate 'Em), or Nothin', or Dont Start a Band? It seems like a lot of their songs are not too happy at all. They just sound kinda happy with the way the horns and everything are played. That fat ass ginger is a douche.
Man that interviewer seemed so misinformed on what Streetlight is as a band. Thomas abhors the idea of classifying them into one particular limiting genre for the simple fact that he wants fans to realize that Streetlight is more of a melting pot of influences from their own lives. The horns and overall ska influence is there because he likes the sound, while the high speed suits his punk influence.

I don't know why people keep calling Tomas a dick from what I've seen in interviews he just seems like a quiet individual but then again I don't know the guy and I could be totally wrong all I know is his music kicks ass
Despite how Tomas is saying they're not a ska band, there's no denying the ska influences. A strong horn section, prominent bass line, and the style of guitar playing all point toward this. Though the punk rock influences are much more prevalent than with other third-wave ska bands.
Dito on the black sheep thing. I'm not 100% complaining b/c a) I always manage to find bands that I do like on Warped (even if they have only like 20 people watching them) and scratch out an great time b) Besides actual specific concerts, I have never even known what its like to go anywhere, let alone a festival, where I like all, or even most of the music so I have developed a tolerance to hearing music I dislike on the stage next to me. I'm just happy to find music I like at all.
Haha I remember at their last 2009 show (Mike Soprano's last too, sadly) he said the exact same thing, no tour until they have a new original album. And, as per usual, 99SoR delayed 6 months, no original album and the Ship of Fools tour gets underway. I love Streetlight to death but I wish to god Tomas would keep his promises sometimes.
Oh, and he doesn't act like a dick here at all, btw. If anything he's generous, considering Wikipedia answers almost all the interviewer's questions.
@RdSoxFan618 you're wrong. i had this conversation with someone before, just because he is a lion in that video doesnt make him in love with himself. and his personality is him doing what he likes, playing his music without caring about anyone else, and every band says they do that, but they just say it. thats actually how tomas lives, and i dont know why you even insult him like that you dont knwo him
@RdSoxFan618 I don't know, I think that's a bit of a stretch. And I mean, he is the frontman of the band and pretty much the biggest progenator of the musical direction they take. But maybe he just likes lions. If anything, I think that video just shows a contempt for the evils of the human race against our fellow organisms.
i hate that any band with horns is automatically classified as a "ska" band. why can't people listen to the music before they classify it one way or another?
Everyone's being rough on this Cabbo dude. Haha. You can't say what your saying and not generate a response though. Streetlight is one of the few bands out there (as in all bands that use english, because most people on youtube can't really judge any other language) that actually has amazing and meaningful lyrics. Tomas seems like kind of a jerk, but you guys don't know him and there's not video of him just being a straight up douche, so you can't really judge.

I'm not a fan of Streetlight's lyrics, but that's not the point. The music is just fantastic, and that's all it needs to be. Like he said in another interview, they aren't really saying anything, it's all about what they enjoy doing, and like to hear. And they're very good at it. I'd say up-beat pop-punk with more chords and fresher melodies.
With more chords and better melodies, but yeah, it's not really accurate, is it? I suppose they're just a very hard band to describe. Fucking class A though.
Well, yeah, if you're going to include Beyonce, The Killers, Metallica, or Panic! at the disco (four wholly unrelated 'artists'), but you take bands like Black Sabbath, or people like Tori Amos, or that ginger stand-up guy from Australia... Streetlight's lyrics tend to wander away from meaning (but that's not to say they're meaningless).
No, see, if that were true, then they wouldn't have included the line '...we'll not be victims, there'll be no victims of to speak, and only then will we be free...'
Far from perfect. Fucking excellent song, but not perfect in any way. Well, maybe the brass. And the bass. And drums. Well, everything but the lyrics.
@dontask96 So you were born, and that was a good day. Some day you will die, and that is a shame. But somewhere in the between there was a life in which we all dreamed and nothing and no one will ever take that away. <3
One time I hung around after a concert and met the band. We all hung out in the ally behind the venue chit chatting and whatnot but Tomas just went back into the bus. Everyone else was a good time tho!
I don't think he's being a dick. I can see how he's frustrated with the fact that a large amount of his fans don't really understand them as a band, or what their vision is.
This happens with almost any band that has lots of followers, but I see many people calling Streetlight a ska band, and it really isn't that.
It's just music. It's just how they want to play, without trying hard to cater to a genre. Hate it or love it, but they're the ones who should get to decide "what it is".
When I was in the Apple store at the mall one day I saw Tomas. I approached him and told him I was a fan and blah blah blah...the whole time he was like looking to the side, like he was wanting to get out of this, hahaha! I had to get a picture with him so my friends would believe me, I took the picture of us (even though I could tell he didn't want to) I was probably being pushy, but he definately doesn't like to be greeted by fans out in public! :)
Picture walking down the street, you've got things to do, you want to get home and watch TV or play your guitar. Someone you don't know walk up to you, tells you they like your work, that's all very flattering, but now you're worried that they'll invite you to dinner or something, and you can't say no, because you'll look like a dick, and you can't say yes and not turn up, so you'll look like a dick. It would be an awkward situation for anyone.
I admit I wasn't thinking. But I only talked to him for probably less than a minute, and the only thing I pressured him into doing was a picture. He's not a dick, I was just saying I can tell he doesn't like to be confronted out in public... for me it was a once in a lifetime sort of thing, so I did it anyway, putting aside any regrets of dumb feelings
i definitely agree with Tomas's opinion on the whole "fashion-core" scene. I saw SLM play in seattle on the warped tour not knowing much about the tour, and i felt thoroughly ripped off after realizing that all the other bands there were shitty emo pop-punk bands and that i paid for a ticket to a tour to see one good band play for 30 minutes. I really hope they come back after 99SOTR and play an actual show.

thats exactly what i was fucking saying in my second post, did you read what i said at all? It doesn't matter what the genre is. All that matters is that it's fucking good music.
Arguing about genre is the exact reason why he doesn't like genres... He's not being holier than thou, or rebellious about it... he's letting you know his outlook on the narrow concept of a genre, and how their music branches out into many different genres. It's just music. Another thing, the whole, not ska because the lyrics are dark? How ridiculous. Just a bad lead to grab from the conversation. Bringing up RBF's "happy" lyrics are exactly what he was talking about not calling their selves ska
I think the question at 6:50 is actually one of the only decent questions he asked, from a journalistic point of view. He should NOT be wearing those sunglasses though, very poor taste (not even considering the fact that they're fake).
The tour that Tomas is talking about as a great opportunity had to be the one with Reel Big Fish and Less than Jake. That was the best fuckin tour ever, went to see Less Than Jake in Allentown then went again in Rochester for Streetlight. That was the day I started loving Streetlight more than any other band.
"We're finishing up the covers record right now, and as soon as that's done, and Warped Tour is done, we've got a couple short tours and then we're taking a hiatus to record the next set on the 99SOR for SLM (or maybe BOTAR)."
That's essentially what he said. What I thought he meant was it would be finished by around/just after WT, then they are going on that short tour - the one that starts Sep 17th...why I said it would be out in September?
I don't know, maybe I heard it earlier in the video, I'm not going to rewatch it again, but I guess what I meant was it will be finished by September."
@vtechbitch That was a Catch 22 cover, Catch 22 was his old band and they were/are most definitely 3rd Wave. The name of that song has nothing to do with SM.
i would say they almost are creating a new wave of ska...i mean they are definatelly influence by ska or some of their songs are, but most of their new stuff isnt as much ska edging towards punk. but either way they are definatelly my favorite band :D
the douche is like oh oh your ska ska blah blah blah ska your so ska and then kalnokys like um were not ska and hes like holy shit your not ska how did i not see it before ur so punk
I hate this fat fuck, you can tell he barely knows anything about streetlight manifesto. He doesn even deserve to interview tomas. He looks like barney.
what a doosh bag. you dont interview him for people who have never barely heard of the band for the whole fucking time. you interview him for hardcore people. what a totally oblivious pile of doosh
To the purist, it isn't ska, but those purists are like OMGLOL NOT SKATALITES NOT SKA LOL...to me, they have a very more ska-ey sound than a Ramones sound.
They are definatly ska influenced, but they aren't straight up ska. He even says they basically play what feels right, and if it's like ska then whatever.
To be honest, I don't really care. You do however, have those freaks who are like, Streetlight Manifesto isn't ska? Then I'm not listening to them...I only listen to ska. Those are ridiculous, but in all honesty, I listen to ska, I listen to punk, I listen to all sorts of rock, some rap...only genres I really can't stand is R&B and country.
I've found that the opposite happens to be the case more often than not. Where you tell someone they're "ska", and that immediately turns them off.
In my opinion, they aren't ska by any standard definition, but at the same time it's definitely their biggest influence musically. So whatever's convenient.
I think the question at 6:50 is actually one of the only decent questions he asked, from a journalistic point of view. He should NOT be wearing those sunglasses though, very poor taste (not even considering the fact that they're fake).

The tour that Tomas is talking about as a great opportunity had to be the one with Reel Big Fish and Less than Jake. That was the best fuckin tour ever, went to see Less Than Jake in Allentown then went again in Rochester for Streetlight. That was the day I started loving Streetlight more than any other band.

when will 99 songs of revolution (by streetlight manifesto) be released?
T1t3Uf 2 years ago
I'm hoping the first 12/13 songs will be released by 2014, but that may be a lot to ask. I think we will definitely see it by May 2019.
RdSoxFan618 2 years ago
??? Where did you get that ???
T1t3Uf 2 years ago
Why did you write in the video's info that "Tomas basically gives away that you can expect the cover album out in September".
T1t3Uf 2 years ago
"We're finishing up the covers record right now, and as soon as that's done, and Warped Tour is done, we've got a couple short tours and then we're taking a hiatus to record the next set on the 99SOR for SLM (or maybe BOTAR)."
That's essentially what he said. What I thought he meant was it would be finished by around/just after WT, then they are going on that short tour - the one that starts Sep 17th...why I said it would be out in September?
RdSoxFan618 2 years ago
I don't know, maybe I heard it earlier in the video, I'm not going to rewatch it again, but I guess what I meant was it will be finished by September."
RdSoxFan618 2 years ago
I don't think you can say Streetlight Manifest isn't ska. I just don't.
thecrowing07 2 years ago
i think they could almost be considered 4th wave
desensitized12 2 years ago
even though he says they don't really consider themselves ska, i agree with you. especially after somewhere in the between.

more like pirate rock

mad caddies are pirate rock.
cordell2311 2 years ago 2
ok but that was the inspiration for their first music video
some dude said that they sounded like pirate rock
baconrox22 2 years ago
they are fourth wave...thats why one of their songs is called riding the fourth wave
vtechbitch 2 years ago
@vtechbitch That was a Catch 22 cover, Catch 22 was his old band and they were/are most definitely 3rd Wave. The name of that song has nothing to do with SM.
NecromanceLanguage 1 year ago
i would say they almost are creating a new wave of ska...i mean they are definatelly influence by ska or some of their songs are, but most of their new stuff isnt as much ska edging towards punk. but either way they are definatelly my favorite band :D

I hate this fat fuck, you can tell he barely knows anything about streetlight manifesto. He doesn even deserve to interview tomas. He looks like barney.
effinstreetlightman 2 years ago
what a doosh bag. you dont interview him for people who have never barely heard of the band for the whole fucking time. you interview him for hardcore people. what a totally oblivious pile of doosh

Streetlight Manifesto =/= Ska. I'm not sure why no one ever gets that.
Pablo4949 2 years ago 2
To the purist, it isn't ska, but those purists are like OMGLOL NOT SKATALITES NOT SKA LOL...to me, they have a very more ska-ey sound than a Ramones sound.
RdSoxFan618 2 years ago
They are definatly ska influenced, but they aren't straight up ska. He even says they basically play what feels right, and if it's like ska then whatever.
Pablo4949 2 years ago
To be honest, I don't really care. You do however, have those freaks who are like, Streetlight Manifesto isn't ska? Then I'm not listening to them...I only listen to ska. Those are ridiculous, but in all honesty, I listen to ska, I listen to punk, I listen to all sorts of rock, some rap...only genres I really can't stand is R&B and country.
RdSoxFan618 2 years ago
I've found that the opposite happens to be the case more often than not. Where you tell someone they're "ska", and that immediately turns them off.
In my opinion, they aren't ska by any standard definition, but at the same time it's definitely their biggest influence musically. So whatever's convenient.
5o1id 2 years ago
your reasoning for this is???
guypaintball 2 years ago
Why is it that whenever Tomas is interviewed it's always a terrible interviewer with little knowledge about "ska", "punk" or Streetlight?
coffeebandits 2 years ago 2
he always gets the stupidest fucking questions.
benjula2008 2 years ago 3
Eh, decent interview.
I wish, just once, someone who is an actual fan of Tomas and his work would be the interviewer.
I don't think that is asking too much.
5o1id 2 years ago 5
I'm Streetlight Manifesto's biggest fan, and even I don't know who Streetlight Manifesto is.
