  • "Reel Big Fish, you tour a lot with them, and their tunes are notoriously happy"

What tunes was he talking about? Was it Everything Sucks, or Drunk Again, or Hate You, or Another F.U. Song, or Your Guts (I Hate 'Em), or Nothin', or Dont Start a Band? It seems like a lot of their songs are not too happy at all. They just sound kinda happy with the way the horns and everything are played. That fat ass ginger is a douche.

  • "You just look like..." -- video cuts off

    YOU JUST LOOK LIKE WHAT

  • WHY WASN'T I AT WARPED TOUR '09?

    ALSO

    NO STRIPES.

    NO HAT.

    WHAT?

  • Man that interviewer seemed so misinformed on what Streetlight is as a band. Thomas abhors the idea of classifying them into one particular limiting genre for the simple fact that he wants fans to realize that Streetlight is more of a melting pot of influences from their own lives. The horns and overall ska influence is there because he likes the sound, while the high speed suits his punk influence.

The whole Catch 22 issues being brought up was really ridiculous and I think it was more of a

  • part 2?

  • whos that guy without a hat that says hes in streetlight?

  • They're inside... why is that guy wearing sunglasses?

  • It must be really sunny in that room for the interviewer to be wearing sunglasses.

  • Dumbass, Just because they have horns does not make them ska. Streetlight is beyond ska.

  • so, where's the other part?

  • this video fucking never loads for me.

  • Fucking Cartman...

  • all dem rude boys are shakin dere heads lol

  • I don't know why people keep calling Tomas a dick from what I've seen in interviews he just seems like a quiet individual but then again I don't know the guy and I could be totally wrong all I know is his music kicks ass

  • the interveiwer keeps intterrupting tomas

  • man this interviewer sucks

  • god right here

  • Despite how Tomas is saying they're not a ska band, there's no denying the ska influences. A strong horn section, prominent bass line, and the style of guitar playing all point toward this. Though the punk rock influences are much more prevalent than with other third-wave ska bands.

  • shut up tom, you're a ska band

  • @udlerman did you even listen to his explanation?

  • you know, tomas is kind of a hipster

  • thomas didnt give two shits about the ska bands in warped tour whoop! whoop!

  • Whats up with the sunglasses? Seriously?

  • @ChestertheBigRedDog

It's dark inside that well-lit building bro.

  • I seriously hate the guy who is doing the interview. I want to punch his face.

  • ahah. I love the guys face when he's saying how everything on warped tour is basically complete garbage. Which I 100% agree with. ahah

  • I don't care what you call this music It is still amazing

  • Dito on the black sheep thing. I'm not 100% complaining b/c a) I always manage to find bands that I do like on Warped (even if they have only like 20 people watching them) and scratch out an great time b) Besides actual specific concerts, I have never even known what its like to go anywhere, let alone a festival, where I like all, or even most of the music so I have developed a tolerance to hearing music I dislike on the stage next to me. I'm just happy to find music I like at all.

  • Haha he said RBF's lyrics are happy when more than half of their songs are about hating people.. x)

  • @WinFailSuccess ha i know i caught that too. but i think he meant their songs are more comical as opposed to how dark streetlight's songs tend to be

  • Is the next record referenced the Songs of the Revolution project or original stuff?

  • Haha I remember at their last 2009 show (Mike Soprano's last too, sadly) he said the exact same thing, no tour until they have a new original album. And, as per usual, 99SoR delayed 6 months, no original album and the Ship of Fools tour gets underway. I love Streetlight to death but I wish to god Tomas would keep his promises sometimes.

Oh, and he doesn't act like a dick here at all, btw. If anything he's generous, considering Wikipedia answers almost all the interviewer's questions.

  • He admits what?

  • @televisewhatyouwant He admits that they complicate everything - miss deadlines, never communicate, etc...

  • @RdSoxFan618 you're wrong. i had this conversation with someone before, just because he is a lion in that video doesnt make him in love with himself. and his personality is him doing what he likes, playing his music without caring about anyone else, and every band says they do that, but they just say it. thats actually how tomas lives, and i dont know why you even insult him like that you dont knwo him

  • @M15CY I was being sarcastic...people need to get off my d.

  • Maybe Tomas just likes lions...

  • He definately has a little bit of an accent

  • who cares if he's a little narcissistic, the man's a genius.

  • punk ska AKA spa

  • @RdSoxFan618 I don't know, I think that's a bit of a stretch. And I mean, he is the frontman of the band and pretty much the biggest progenator of the musical direction they take. But maybe he just likes lions. If anything, I think that video just shows a contempt for the evils of the human race against our fellow organisms.

  • @mattheusrufus im pretty sure he is a lion in it because tom is from teh czech republic and the coat of arms there is a symbol of a lion

  • @M15CY That's true, I hadn't thought of that. thanks!

  • Streetlight = Hardcore Jazz

  • @tito720 hahahaha

  • Punk SKa

  • @RdSoxFan618 all aside, it's an amazing video and song.

  • @RdSoxFan618 who told you it was his first. they were making a fucking music video, im sure he thought of hundreds of animals.

  • @RdSoxFan618 Well he does have a big hairy beard/mane.

  • i saw them at warped tour and i met thomas and hes just the coolest person ive ever met hes one of my heroes like for real

  • @RdSoxFan618 I'm sorry, but exactly what about the Would You Be Impressed music video makes him look narcissistic?

  • "I grew up listening to actual punk rock, not 85% of what's on this tour, heh heh..."

hahahahahahahahaha, Warped Tour is such a joke anymore...

  • @mattheusrufus haha thats funny. "is such a joke anymore" you diddnt need to say anymore. its just funny that you did. it sounds funny.

  • @M15CY hahaha, yeah, I guess you're right

  • Man... I'd have his babies. I'm a guy. I don't care. I'd find some way.

  • @bwfeliciano Made me lol. :D

  • i hate that any band with horns is automatically classified as a "ska" band. why can't people listen to the music before they classify it one way or another?

  • Everyone's being rough on this Cabbo dude. Haha. You can't say what your saying and not generate a response though. Streetlight is one of the few bands out there (as in all bands that use english, because most people on youtube can't really judge any other language) that actually has amazing and meaningful lyrics. Tomas seems like kind of a jerk, but you guys don't know him and there's not video of him just being a straight up douche, so you can't really judge.

  • if hes such a huge fan why ask all these dumb rookie streetlight questions

  • Streetlight = Upbeat Pop-punk? Wooooooooooooooooow.

Can't believe you just said that...

  • Worth saying twice, eh?

With more chords and better melodies, but yeah, it's not really accurate, is it? I suppose they're just a very hard band to describe. Fucking class A though.

  • @RdSoxFan618 I can't either! I just don't understand it...

  • up beat pop punk*cough cough*Duuuude *cough* you didn't just say that.

  • @DavidSatira, I did, and almost immediately disapproved.

  • @CabboPearimo8 Boooo to your opinion. The lyrics are so much more enlightening then other bands out there

  • Well, yeah, if you're going to include Beyonce, The Killers, Metallica, or Panic! at the disco (four wholly unrelated 'artists'), but you take bands like Black Sabbath, or people like Tori Amos, or that ginger stand-up guy from Australia... Streetlight's lyrics tend to wander away from meaning (but that's not to say they're meaningless).

  • @CabboPearimo8 excuse me sir but fuck you. everything they do is pretty much perfect

  • No, see, if that were true, then they wouldn't have included the line '...we'll not be victims, there'll be no victims of to speak, and only then will we be free...'

Far from perfect. Fucking excellent song, but not perfect in any way. Well, maybe the brass. And the bass. And drums. Well, everything but the lyrics.

  • @CabboPearimo8 not a fan of their lyrics?

  • @CabboPearimo8 BLASPHEMY!

  • @CabboPearimo8 wtf! Streetlight has some of the most amazing lyrics ever! It takes pure talent and skill and dedication to write like that!

  • @dontask96 So you were born, and that was a good day. Some day you will die, and that is a shame. But somewhere in the between there was a life in which we all dreamed and nothing and no one will ever take that away. <3

  • They're not ska. They're not punk. They're Streetlight mother fuckin' Manifesto.

  • nope i think they are ska

  • This statement is wonderful.

  • One time I hung around after a concert and met the band. We all hung out in the ally behind the venue chit chatting and whatnot but Tomas just went back into the bus. Everyone else was a good time tho!

  • I've also gotta say, after seeing this video I can understand why Tomas doesn't like to do interviews.

  • Completely agree. However the questions didn't help lead the interview anywhere either.

  • Same for anyone who's ever been interviewed by a fanboy.

  • I don't think he's being a dick. I can see how he's frustrated with the fact that a large amount of his fans don't really understand them as a band, or what their vision is.

This happens with almost any band that has lots of followers, but I see many people calling Streetlight a ska band, and it really isn't that.

It's just music. It's just how they want to play, without trying hard to cater to a genre. Hate it or love it, but they're the ones who should get to decide "what it is".

  • yea iv heard hes a dick too. he seemed a little dickish when i saw him on warped tour

  • that fucker forgot fishbone

  • I've heard he was a dick....... he doesn't look like a dick

  • When I was in the Apple store at the mall one day I saw Tomas. I approached him and told him I was a fan and blah blah blah...the whole time he was like looking to the side, like he was wanting to get out of this, hahaha! I had to get a picture with him so my friends would believe me, I took the picture of us (even though I could tell he didn't want to) I was probably being pushy, but he definately doesn't like to be greeted by fans out in public! :)

  • Picture walking down the street, you've got things to do, you want to get home and watch TV or play your guitar. Someone you don't know walk up to you, tells you they like your work, that's all very flattering, but now you're worried that they'll invite you to dinner or something, and you can't say no, because you'll look like a dick, and you can't say yes and not turn up, so you'll look like a dick. It would be an awkward situation for anyone.

  • I admit I wasn't thinking. But I only talked to him for probably less than a minute, and the only thing I pressured him into doing was a picture. He's not a dick, I was just saying I can tell he doesn't like to be confronted out in public... for me it was a once in a lifetime sort of thing, so I did it anyway, putting aside any regrets of dumb feelings

  • Oh, I know, I'm not saying anything against you, I'm just saying that you can see how it would be an awkward situation.

  • uh oh! the interviewer used the "S" word in front of Tomas... SKA!

  • more like SKAmas. hahahah

  • in my opinion, they are the new wave, punk + Latin + Swing + Complex terms = 4th wave ska its what my band plays

  • Best ska band ever. Along with BOTAR, Tomas' side project. TOMAS= GENIUS

  • i love streetlights re-creation of keasbey nights! its great...lol just saying xD

  • i definitely agree with Tomas's opinion on the whole "fashion-core" scene. I saw SLM play in seattle on the warped tour not knowing much about the tour, and i felt thoroughly ripped off after realizing that all the other bands there were shitty emo pop-punk bands and that i paid for a ticket to a tour to see one good band play for 30 minutes. I really hope they come back after 99SOTR and play an actual show.

  • modern day musical genius right here

  • later album* my bad bro. Don't get all butthurt that Tomas doesn't exactly consider his band a ska band, it's just something some people have to live with.

  • what the fuck do you mean?

bands dont have to be classified by anything.

    poser.

  • thats exactly what i was fucking saying in my second post, did you read what i said at all? It doesn't matter what the genre is. All that matters is that it's fucking good music.

  • sorry man.

    i stand corrected.

  • Comment removed

  • @Brick1993

apparently this guy know streetlight's music better than tomas kalnoky

  • Either way SM kicks ass.

  • Only Keasbey Nights and MOST of Everything Goes Numb are ska imo. Streetlight's later albums are just Tomas being creative in his own way.

  • If streetlight manifesto ever comes to mexico, I'll shit bricks.

  • tomas is a gentleman, no doubt about it.

  • @xpredox Kristina she won't know what she missed.

  • @xpredox I agree, I met him, very nice guy.

  • Beard Fight!

  • OMG, he said "fashioncore." Thats the best god damn thing I've ever heard. I fucking love Thomas Kalnoky!

  • 7:47 - 8 :47 HELL YES

  • Arguing about genre is the exact reason why he doesn't like genres... He's not being holier than thou, or rebellious about it... he's letting you know his outlook on the narrow concept of a genre, and how their music branches out into many different genres. It's just music. Another thing, the whole, not ska because the lyrics are dark? How ridiculous. Just a bad lead to grab from the conversation. Bringing up RBF's "happy" lyrics are exactly what he was talking about not calling their selves ska

  • reel big fish happy? dont think so plus aaron is a pessimist and tomas is an optimist

  • Tomas K says it himself, theyre one and only and they are deeper and more meaning full than anything before, long live streetlight

  • "running in place"

  • i just used this video to pown some1 in an agruement. i was saying streetlight isnt ska and this video just proved it. thanks for uploading it =)

  • @hmmhmm111

    right on! hah

  • I think the question at 6:50 is actually one of the only decent questions he asked, from a journalistic point of view. He should NOT be wearing those sunglasses though, very poor taste (not even considering the fact that they're fake).

  • The tour that Tomas is talking about as a great opportunity had to be the one with Reel Big Fish and Less than Jake. That was the best fuckin tour ever, went to see Less Than Jake in Allentown then went again in Rochester for Streetlight. That was the day I started loving Streetlight more than any other band.

  • hahah tomas is blowing this kids mind.

  • the las 30 sec, totally relate tom. they should make another vans warped tour, with only punk bands ha

  • haha what a crappy interviewer...

  • when will 99 songs of revolution (by streetlight manifesto) be released?

  • I'm hoping the first 12/13 songs will be released by 2014, but that may be a lot to ask. I think we will definitely see it by May 2019.

  • ??? Where did you get that ???

  • Why did you write in the video's info that "Tomas basically gives away that you can expect the cover album out in September".

  • "We're finishing up the covers record right now, and as soon as that's done, and Warped Tour is done, we've got a couple short tours and then we're taking a hiatus to record the next set on the 99SOR for SLM (or maybe BOTAR)."

That's essentially what he said. What I thought he meant was it would be finished by around/just after WT, then they are going on that short tour - the one that starts Sep 17th...why I said it would be out in September?

  • I don't know, maybe I heard it earlier in the video, I'm not going to rewatch it again, but I guess what I meant was it will be finished by September."

  • I don't think you can say Streetlight Manifest isn't ska. I just don't.

  • i think they could almost be considered 4th wave

  • even though he says they don't really consider themselves ska, i agree with you. especially after somewhere in the between.

  • more like pirate rock

  • mad caddies are pirate rock.

  • ok but that was the inspiration for their first music video

some dude said that they sounded like pirate rock

  • they are fourth wave...thats why one of their songs is called riding the fourth wave

  • @vtechbitch That was a Catch 22 cover, Catch 22 was his old band and they were/are most definitely 3rd Wave. The name of that song has nothing to do with SM.

  • i would say they almost are creating a new wave of ska...i mean they are definatelly influence by ska or some of their songs are, but most of their new stuff isnt as much ska edging towards punk. but either way they are definatelly my favorite band :D

  • "Riding the fourth wave"

  • Comment removed

  • Streetlight very rarely does any interviews.......and the one time they do they give it to these amateur fucks......retarded.

  • the douche is like oh oh your ska ska blah blah blah ska your so ska and then kalnokys like um were not ska and hes like holy shit your not ska how did i not see it before ur so punk

  • I hate this fat fuck, you can tell he barely knows anything about streetlight manifesto. He doesn even deserve to interview tomas. He looks like barney.

  • what a doosh bag. you dont interview him for people who have never barely heard of the band for the whole fucking time. you interview him for hardcore people. what a totally oblivious pile of doosh

  • hahahah i love the description, thanks for putting this on youtube dude

  • Streetlight Manifesto =/= Ska. I'm not sure why no one ever gets that.

  • To the purist, it isn't ska, but those purists are like OMGLOL NOT SKATALITES NOT SKA LOL...to me, they have a very more ska-ey sound than a Ramones sound.

  • They are definatly ska influenced, but they aren't straight up ska. He even says they basically play what feels right, and if it's like ska then whatever.

  • To be honest, I don't really care. You do however, have those freaks who are like, Streetlight Manifesto isn't ska? Then I'm not listening to them...I only listen to ska. Those are ridiculous, but in all honesty, I listen to ska, I listen to punk, I listen to all sorts of rock, some rap...only genres I really can't stand is R&B and country.

  • I've found that the opposite happens to be the case more often than not. Where you tell someone they're "ska", and that immediately turns them off.

In my opinion, they aren't ska by any standard definition, but at the same time it's definitely their biggest influence musically. So whatever's convenient.

  • your reasoning for this is???

  • Why is it that whenever Tomas is interviewed it's always a terrible interviewer with little knowledge about "ska", "punk" or Streetlight?

  • he always gets the stupidest fucking questions.

  • Eh, decent interview.

I wish, just once, someone who is an actual fan of Tomas and his work would be the interviewer.

I don't think that is asking too much.

  • I'm Streetlight Manifesto's biggest fan, and even I don't know who Streetlight Manifesto is.

  • Nice job Meatwad!

  • thanks!

    cant wait for 99 SOR
