Great review. The perspective that you bring to the table is so different from comments from other videos. I think that age cools a lot of desire for abandoning the day to day functioning in a not so perfect society.
It is sad and pathetic how misinformed you two are,"and ultimately stupid".Your age makes me have even less respect for you, because I would believe nearing death as you are, you would have a better understanding of the world and it's philosophies. Everyone harbors judgements, including you, who are you to criticize?Romanticism is not terrible,it is actually the cause of the industrial revolution if you know your history at all, making it possible for you to post your lame and innacurate critique.
Post 'GFC' puts this film in it's proper context. Again like No Country, it's underlying message is about ... greed. Freedom from .... greed. Being modern Romans it's very hard even for these wonderful elders to see those threads in the fabric of their own society. Here is a major point: We in the west, you in USA, me in Australia live above royalty in the middle ages. People will say - stupid comparison ... is it really? How much is enough really?
I can not believe you actually think that he did all of that just to get rich off the story that is extremely rude and insulting to chris's memory you guys have no idea what your talking about
Hey guys, great review, but I think you've got it a bit wrong. I've seen this movie a dozen times (it's my favorite of all-time), and the message is very clear: he is, as CoralxxChaos said, breaking away from society, not for popularity, but for freedom. You said he was a very judgemental person, and I agree, but he was only judgemental to people who conformed to society. Was he judgemental towards his parents? Absolutely. Was he judgemental towards Rainey and Jan (the hippies)? Not at all.
I don't think he wanted to write a book to become rich and famous, but I do think he wanted to write a book. I believe he wanted to write one to inspire others to break away from the society that we are inslaved in. I think he was a great man, and it's a shame that he didn't bring a map. Then he could have made it out alive and wrote a book about his travels, and I could tell him just how much he influenced my life and everything I believe.
Back in our days we respected our parents even if our dad beat the hell out of our Mom in front of us, even if Dad called Mom every name in the book that was good parenting besides and it was a man job to teach his son to put his wife in her place and we liked it, Damn kid want his independence should have followed his dads example beat women and cheat on your wife but as long as you have money everything is Ok
inconsiderate little shit, left his sister and mum who loved him very much. btw smart aussie do this sort of shit all the time, but coz were sensible we know when its time to snap out of it. died coz he ate the wrong thing, pretty pathetic
I am an old geezer who really liked this movie. Chis's parents , like many, seemed to want to run his life. They expected him to buy into their value system too. He had a right to live his life. Reel Geezer's generation has left kids a mountain of govt. debt, a ruined environment and a society which worships materialism. But as Holbrook says, to forgive is to love. Had Chris survived he would have forgiven his parents because he was the wiser and nobler one. A hateful heart can be crippling.
i dnt think he wanted to be rich, cause he gives that up, he even says in the film he wants to publish a book but i think thats to spread his dream to inspire not to get something out of it himself, because i think he believes his travels were all he wanted, he also risked so much to do what he did, he wouldn't have done that just for something he could of got at home, he died hppy after how he lived, even though he doesn't become rich.. also the whole point of his travels was to escape that
no one gets out of here alive. especially not a couple of geezers buried alive in "safety" and comforts.
why can't you see that Sean Penn represented BOTH of the perspectives you mentioned? the boy was not all one or the other. he was real, and as such he embodied both. and that's okay.
some people are so afraid of dying, or getting hurt, or not having a pension, or whatever, that they choose to live in a box, and slowly suffocate.
It is an original quest to human, all teen go through that stage but end up getting back to track, comfort and lack of freedom of mind, I believe every one should take this inner trip, "not the same way" to the extreme to find one self, It is not only the movie but a wide idea of self realization..
These 2 veterans of the great depression and a World War are tougher , much wiser and better read than all of the people who post here. They are walking history books who contribute more to society every time they speak than McCandless ever did. God bless the reel geezers.
That is the WORST review I have ever heard. Stick to subject matter you can handle, like The Wizard of Oz or some such garbage that doesnt require thought.
Publish a book and becoming rich are u stupid then why would he give the money to charity and burn the money that was left in his wallet he didnt do this for money.
yep I'm sure he would have written a book or two documenting his journey physically and spiritually but they money most likely would have gone straight into a cabin and equipment. or something like that.
this lady just likes the idea of comforts as she says, she obviously missed chris' mind set.
it was a review more on the man then on the film, but then again it was great. i mean, it's like she said: the man took pictures of himself, if it wasnt for the river he would have coma back and write a book and be famous and rich ! ITS EASY to put on a pedestal a dead man, deadmen are aaaaaalways so great hahaha he was just a normal punk ! :)
You missed the point. Yes, this tragedy could have been prevented. But that is no the point!! The point is, HE TRULY LIVED! this focus was not to be rich, but to find a way to rise above the confines of a heartless commercialized world. Seems as though you two haven't been moved to do anything in your lives. He lived more in the those two years than you could ever imagine at your age. it was once said, to truly find yourself one must truly lose oneself. Chris found himself! I honor his life. ED
This movie made me cry for 2 hrs, its so deep and wonderful. Why is it so hard to find a movie that gives you a good cry and is true to the blue in ever word
I'm being for real when i say that i actually cried for 2 or 3 days...and i'm a guy lol...so you're not alone. Into the Wild was a beautiful film in all aspects. I loved it :] i might actually go into the wild myself one day.
yeh me too, i havnt cried in a movie since i was about 4: the first time i watched the lion king! this story really has inspired me, as a 19 year old male i havnt really thought much about life but after this movie it really got me thinking. life is too short, and hapiness should always come first.
im very impressed by your comments we need more people like you, with the knowlege and experience to talk to young people, for us is very easy to get lost. we need you elder´s more than we both know
i think this was a quite objective review actually... i read the book- and i'm one to celebrate foolhardiness. you brought up some good points and i appreciated your views on the story. good :)
it`s just one of the main problems being part of the whole judgement process people put on each other...lack of respect and arrogance...anyway things about mccandless are loads to say, he surely was driven by an eventually blindening excitement and sense of adventure, probably hearing too loud a echo of his fav authour`s words in his head , but do not, please come up with illegitimate conclusions
what a banal thing to say end especially to think ;relating what could be a sincere and felt choice to one of the most common behaviours... we`re not all the same and expect to know more about what you see just because you lived longer...It`s really annoying and offensive not being taken seriously ...
you know, sometimes young or not, people that take specific decisions, do It in the total awarness of the motivations of their choices and not just driven by some supposed youth excitement...
mccandless is a specific case , just like any of us is, loads of aspects of his story and personality are to be considered...i`m sure a higher sensibility and consideration in the analysing his story could lead to a fairer conclusion than" he probably wanted to write
ok, i will reformulate cause i have posted unready by mistake...
try to get out of your own prospectives, try not to underextimate something especially just beacuse you don`t understand it or don`t particularely try to...
and especially don`t relate what could be an uncommon behaviour , as most of people do ,to the usual reasons linked to the foolishness and positivism typical of a young age...
try to get out of your own prospectives, try not to underextimate something especially just beacuse you don`t understand or don`t particularely try to...
and especially don`t relate , as most of people do , the usual age reasons...
i have not seen the movie but i have read and have thouroughly enjoyed the book. I disagree with your thoughts on his intentions about his memorbilia. I believe that these reflections were exactly that reflections, and not some foundation of a future quest for financial success. This monetary motive appears contradictary to his beliefs and actions and would appear to be the sort of commercial venture that he so passionately loathed. Thank you.
What hit me was one of the last shots in the film, the one being the wishful thinking being played with the narration of "If I could run in to your arms, would you see what I see?" The expressions of joy and relief from the parents, and the tear rolling down Marcia Gay Harden's face, its profoundly sad.
My opinion on this review is biased because I'm on the opposite side of the spectrum with these "geezers." To say that the movie is about being ultimately stupid is a naive thing to say, which I hope isn't provoked by one's old age, but an envy for courage. There are MANY people who have, and will set out to experience adventures like Chris did, people of all ages not just the young. Although I respect your opinion, I'm afraid I can't agree this time Geezers :\
Nooo. I think if he were alive today he would be mad at the fact that there WAS a book written about him and a movie... He wasn't that kind of person I don't believe. And I believe at that point in his life he had to do something, and it had to be complete and thats what he did. Anyways I enjoyed your video, but you really should get out and see the prettiness of what is all around us. The woods and the beauty of nature will blow you away if you give it a try. :) -Sam
You can enjoy the beauty of nature & the world around you without making your family suffer (by wondering daily about your whereabouts) & without making others find & have to clean up your remains in such a tragic way- imagine the hell they have to live with at finding a dead body?!
If you read the book or saw the movie any person could say his family suffered.
Sure he can do what he wants & go where he pleases- noone is debating this. But the next time a loved one of yours essentially disappears without a trace for weeks/months/years on end, please write back in & tell us how much you are NOT suffering.
Our choices impact others...deal with it.
Also, if you ever happen upon a dead body, tell us you aren't suffering with nightmares.
I disagree with your points. The movie isn't about being young, fool-hearted, and stupid. Chris McCandless' goal wasn't to come out of the woods in hopes of publishing a book and making millions. What a senile thing to say. It saddens me that two people of your dare-I-say "maturity" would miss the point of the story completely.
he really thought he knew better, and that he actually WAS better than the modern world. foolhardy and stupid pretty much sums that up. they did mention that his intentions were romanticized. AND, it's very likely that someone as literate has he was would've published a book, if not to get rich, then to share his experience. i'm sure u all think u know better than these two. all young people think that don't we?
Wonderful! I love that what crossed my mind during the movie (and I'm what you would consider young) is shared and so beautifully expressed by two mature people. I love that we have that freedom to express ourselves here in north america. Although that movie is touching, to me it shows how desperate and foolish we can be sometimes. Then again, I think that this is what makes the human kind so worthwhile.....
What!? The guy burnt his freaking money, gave almost all of it to charity, and beside, his family was not a poor family. So why did he has to risk his life to "be rich and famous"!!???
Into the Wild is not a movie about a wilderness survival expert. The movie is about a deeply philosophical and idealistic young man looking to find spirituality and deeper meaning in life by living as simply as he could live. He was inspired by great books eg Walden & Call of The Wild so I think he was more motivated to maybe inspire somebody else with his actions, words & thoughts than make money and be famous. He's criticized for dying but IMO he did gain the enlightment he wanted.
Cute couple. Just a HUGE generation gap between these folks and who will actually get what the movie/book has to say. Probably not a great movie for them to review.
Isn't it hypocritical to accuse Chris of pursuing fame and fortune by keeping a diary and camera?
I mean, you make these little movie reviews all the time, right?
What do you do it for? I doubt its' your passion unless you find something really magnificent about sticking your wrinkly old nose into the public with a half-assed opinion.
Basically, it comes down to one thing.
If McCandless was in fact doing it for money, which i doubt, at least he was willing to do something that wasn't so trivial.
These old people need to keep their opinions to themselves. I do not care who they think they are, but I have been offended. Christopher McCandless is one of the few people who I look up to. I can not beive that someone could say this about him. In MY opinion, these old people are IDIOTS. This video has made my blood boil. They did not understand a single thing that Into the Wild represented.
I struggled through watching this due to disagreence, but had to stop watchin when she said Chris did what he did to ultimately gain fame and fortune. That made me sick, that wasn't what he wanted at all. He wanted freedom and above all truth! And if she called him "cool hearted" one more time I could have screamed! They are entitled to their opinions, its true, but so am I, and mine is this was an amazing book, and movie- and Chris was a brave and decent man who I'm proud to say I admire.
this old bag talks about chris having a camera and diary as not being true to his cause and this old man could never grip the true meaning of what he did those years in the wild but the worst part is some people are just absorbed in them selves to understand the simplicity of natural being and living life in its rawest state and you people talk about how he didn't even tell people and that this is so bad but if you fully understood this amazing person called chris you wouldn't be saying this

The irony is the supposed 'freespirit' was able to survive b/c he lived in the safety & shelter of a bus for those months. Not exactly living off the land.
"drama queen much"? are you gay? just wondering. can't imagine a straight guy saying that. anyways, a bus with no heat is minimum shelter. like the other guy said, a tent basically. you only think living in the wild counts if you are totally nude sleeping in a hole? i know people who 'live off the land', who have to hunt to survive. it is a hard life. you seem to think that the bus made life so easy for the guy. again, that is an idiotic statement.
Don't know what's up with your gay bashing since you don't even know whether I am a man or a woman...but whatever. My point is the bus was the very symbol of 'society' that he was supposedly so heartily rebelling against.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
the bus wasn't a symbol of society you fucking bitch! you are a fucking moron. it is a lifestyle, a way of living and being, that he was rebelling against! i hate how you morons think sleeping in a fucking bus is selling out or being a hypocrite. is there heat, or water, or anything in the goddamn bus!! NO! stop posting your shit. you are an idiot. you can't see he what he was rejecting?! you take things so literally. you fag, man/woman. get a brain!
In addition, it seems from the postings on your profile that you have a particular talent of spewing your hatred & piss off many people. Please stick to just spewing your hateful ways online, in the safe & cowardly way. Do not breed.
I think I'll take advice about living up to my ideals from someone a bit more suitable.
"You need some form of shelter"...My point exactly! He criticizes the rest of the world for needing various forms of shelter (ie. help), yet reverts to this shelter when needed. I just thought it was a bit hypocritical to criticize the rest of the world for not being minimalist when doing the exact same thing & not really 'living off the land' as he (and others) try to claim. No man is an island & we all need help & those who claim otherwise are disingenuous & self-righteous.
he doesn't criticize the world for putting roofs over their head you moron. that is like saying he criticizes people for eating. you are actually comparing squatting in an abandoned bus to living in a million dollar home and keep up with the Jones and leading a materialistic life. that is what he was critizing you stupid bitch! because he used shelter he wasn't rejecting the lifestyle of north american culture?? get real!!
Wow, you guys really missed the point. To answer the final question in this video: He was both. Chris McCandless was a contradiction. The part about Penn romanticizing him is garbage. What the movie does is try to represent what Chris believed not say what he believed was good or not. The movie shows the unattractive qualities Chris had (as mentioned in the video) as well as the admirable.
A fresh perspective... thank you for doing these reviews. There sure as hell isn't anything to learn from the vacuuous 20-something self-esteem babies.
His intent was to get rich and famous yet he gave away $24,000 to charity....you two are missing the point but that is understandable since you are viewing it from a place of comfort and conservatism in your old age.
So, because they are old and may be considered wise in some ways, that lends credibility to their statements? I have no problem with a personal opinion on a movie but just because they are old does not mean that their judgments about McCandless and his intentions are correct.
First... OF COURSE experience and wisdom matter and as a vacuous 20-something whose had his grown-up brains for only a short time, you are just too deep in DK-squared to get that. And the guy in the movie... as someone who spends a crap load more time in the woods than 99.9% of the people reading this... he was an idiot and only another idiot would make him a hero.
age has nothing to do with wisdom. there are young people with expanded consciousness as well as older people--you can see it in the eyes always. lorenzo just happens to be a much older soul than marcia and that is reflected in marcia's totally linear way of perceiving as compared to free-flowing lorenzo. and as you may or may not know there are very few old souls walking around. too bad!
People who say that Chris was dumb miss the point. Chris had reached a level of understanding and awareness that it truly liberating and can only be found or experienced by removing yourself from the mold that society has formed around us. The fact that he died and whether or not he had a map is incidental and insignificant in my opinion. The true lesson to be learned is how he lived and the courage and wisdom with which he did so.
I disagree. The fact that he was unprepared and not only that but selfish, is very important. He ignored the advice of experienced hunters, truckers and tons of other people. Its great to appreciate his wisdom but to ignore that is to set yourself up for the same mistakes he made. Also, he was selfish in that his parents did not deserve to loose their son. As far as I know they didn't do anythign to deserve that, ever.
Selfish? Why? Because he wanted to live his life the way he did? I admire him for being able to do it, and do it his way. Unprepared? Yes, to a degree but he did have experience, although little, and didn't think he would be staying there as long as he did. He didn't ignore the advice, what about skinning the moose? He used there advice and it was wrong. Didn't do anything? Did you even watch the movie?
Selfish because he did not understand that an individual's actions impact others- such as one's family...caused untold grief b/c they agonized about his whereabouts & he had absolutely NO regard for their feelings about this. Did not even bother to contact his sister, with whom he was supposedly close with. As far as skinning the 'moose'- he didn't even realize it was a carabou.
Yes the book says it was a moose, based on his diary, which is just one of its many inaccuracies. The actual moose hunters who found him & other game experts have identified what he killed was a caribou. They would know.
Also, he took the advice of hunters from South Dakota, instead of Alaskans who are more familiar with that type of game & preserving it in that particular climate.
Point is,following the wisdom of Thoreau & Jack London should extend to also preparing properly as they did.
Clearly you don't know what wisdom is and the fact that he died is not relevant to my point. If nothing else, Chris McCandless had reached a level of sophistication in his life that is beyond calling people idiots on the internet.
I agree...they are great and very fun to watch. However, their opinions must be taken as such and the context of their age should be considered when watching this particular movie review.
He had absolutely no intent to become rich and famous through the publication of his travel stories. That's an incredibly ignorant thing to say, but I guess I haven't seen the movie, which might have had a different take than the book (which is most accurate). He was intelligent and he had plenty of money, but he discontinued his studies and burned or gave away all his money because he was so idealistic.
Yeah, it seems cliche to say, again, but as a young man, the interpretation is completely different than older peoples who focus much less on the "enlightenment" (a word I feel is fully appropriate although seldom used) aspect. Not so much the "beautiful west of america" deal.
Alex got (I am led to believe) what he wanted. I was never in his head but I feel that if he were to die, he may have wanted to pass on in the place he had always dreamed of. Sure, starving and dying isn't a goal for anyone including Alex but I feel that he found an ideal resting place having done most everything he had ever wanted to do despite the social norms that confronted him.
just so you know we all thought of this guy as being a crazy. He obviously didnt know what the heck he was doing. He was stupid as the lady said and he was actually a nutcase.
I think these two are dead on regarding "Into the Wild." there is a lot to like about this film, but in the end I thought the kid was a knucklehead. more power to him for living his short life the way he wanted, but a little common sense would have gone a long way (he could have grown up to be Jeremiah Johnson, who obviously knew what he was doing)
I don't think common sence had much to do with it. Sure he could have brought a map. I'm sure he had the resourses to bring a pickuptruck and steak and potatos to last him a year... that wasn't the point. The point was to go out and survive on his own.
i think these two just do not understand the movie at all. I believe you said as you get older you celebrate being "foolhardy" less. I believe it is as you become older you lose your feeling of invincibility which leads you to become cautious, maybe too cautious. As we all know we are going to die, how many of us really live out our dreams as chris did.
If you want to disagree with his decisions thats one thing, but to attack the character of a man who lived more in his short life of 24-25 years than most of us do in our lifespan of 70 years is outrageous. Another complaint i have with this is you seem to call upon living in Alaska with no supplies to be impossible and certain death. Yet this is exactly how early man lived and survived.
"living in Alaska with no supplies to be impossible and certain death. Yet this is exactly how early man lived and survived."
If he had been prepared, experienced, and knowledgable about how to survive in the wild (as early man obviously learned to be), then I'd have to agree with you.
you're taking my words out of context; I'm simply stating that at one point in history man survived in the wild with no supplies no knowledge no experience, then as man evolved so to did he learn to live in the wild.
For McCandless that was the point, to be unexperienced to be without a map, to test himself and risk it all. "It wouldn't be an adventure if he already had a solution to every problem that might arise."
It is sad to see that our way of life has totally eclipsed the way of the past and has made some people believe this way is better. I can't help and imagine about all the amazing things chris must have seen. The movie sends the message to live life to the fullest and anything that delivers such a powerful sentiment should be praised.
you make a good point and i respect your opinion, but you shouldn't ridicule and disregard the opinions of others and the different perspectives another generation.
your first sentence in your original comment is a close-minded attack that shuts off readers to the other rather good points of your comment.
i was replying to litcguitarist's comments. not the video, sorry for the misunderstanding.
unless of course you knew that, thus i will quote, "i think these two just do not understand the movie at all." - litcguitarist (3 days ago), which shows a hint of disregard of the opinions of the two elders in the video.
I will revoke my statement and change it to, they have an understanding of the movie but because of their age they can not be objective. For they have lived their lives and maybe they are right in that what Chris was after was too romanticized, but the movie and McCandless' perspectives ask us not to take the words of others but to live our lives and make our own decisions.
I ask the question to everyone would you rather spend your waning years watching t.v. and movies to give reviews to an online community, or trade 20 years of your life to live in the wilderness awake not to alarm clocks but to birds, to be free of obligations and money, to see the sun set and rise as it has been watch thousands of years ago.
There is SO sex in it. Jan and her boyfriend, who was called Rainy in the film, were doing it in one scene. I guess both of these people are on beta blockers.
I love how you correct him when he says "ethics" and you interupt with "ethos" very good rhetorical analysis Mrs. Geezer. I'm impressed with your insight, but how can you call him stupid? He survived for three months and died a tragic hero who's trivial hamartia was the end of him. I suggest reading that book a little more thoroughly.
You said that his intent was "to come out of the woods, publish a book, and become rich and famous." Actually, you can clearly tell that his character clearly shows the contrary (I hope it does in the movie, as I've only read the book). He was from an upper-class family, and grew to hate that sort of lifestyle (hence why he went west in the first place!)
I think these reviews are really interesting and give a great perspective. I respect your opinions a lot (although, I may not agree with all of what you said) I am thrilled that you are sharing. Continue on...please!
How senile are you?! Penn did not make this film to "glorify stupidity" and I never saw it as an unintentional byproduct.
We can say Chris McCandless was "stupid" or whatever, but I've never known of anyone to follow their heart's desires to the extent he did. He has my respect. Plus, three months surviving in the wilderness is still very impressive. Could you last that long?
he was not stupid he disliked people with you're views so HAD to get out.

Supertramp isn't stupid.
He lived more in 3 years than most people in 80 years.
He was free, he smiled, he cried, he sufered and he had an epifany.
It was a very short life but very fulfiling.
As he said when he died, he had an happy life and thanked God for it.

Not at all.

A hateful heart can be crippling.

i dnt think he wanted to be rich, cause he gives that up, he even says in the film he wants to publish a book but i think thats to spread his dream to inspire not to get something out of it himself, because i think he believes his travels were all he wanted, he also risked so much to do what he did, he wouldn't have done that just for something he could of got at home, he died hppy after how he lived, even though he doesn't become rich.. also the whole point of his travels was to escape that

no one gets out of here alive. especially not a couple of geezers buried alive in "safety" and comforts.
why can't you see that Sean Penn represented BOTH of the perspectives you mentioned? the boy was not all one or the other. he was real, and as such he embodied both. and that's okay.
some people are so afraid of dying, or getting hurt, or not having a pension, or whatever, that they choose to live in a box, and slowly suffocate.
out of fear.
i'd rather be a fool than the walking dead.

Eloquently stated. I couldn't agree more. I think a lot of people miss the "greyness" of the character. He is at once a fool and a romantic.

It is an original quest to human, all teen go through that stage but end up getting back to track, comfort and lack of freedom of mind, I believe every one should take this inner trip, "not the same way" to the extreme to find one self, It is not only the movie but a wide idea of self realization..

it was a review more on the man then on the film, but then again it was great. i mean, it's like she said: the man took pictures of himself, if it wasnt for the river he would have coma back and write a book and be famous and rich !

ED

it`s just one of the main problems being part of the whole judgement process people put on each other...lack of respect and arrogance...anyway things about mccandless are loads to say, he surely was driven by an eventually blindening excitement and sense of adventure, probably hearing too loud a echo of his fav authour`s words in his head , but do not, please come up with illegitimate conclusions
jon25camp 3 years ago
a book about it and become rich"...
what a banal thing to say end especially to think ;relating what could be a sincere and felt choice to one of the most common behaviours... we`re not all the same and expect to know more about what you see just because you lived longer...It`s really annoying and offensive not being taken seriously ...
jon25camp 3 years ago 2
you know, sometimes young or not, people that take specific decisions, do It in the total awarness of the motivations of their choices and not just driven by some supposed youth excitement...
mccandless is a specific case , just like any of us is, loads of aspects of his story and personality are to be considered...i`m sure a higher sensibility and consideration in the analysing his story could lead to a fairer conclusion than" he probably wanted to write

i have not seen the movie but i have read and have thouroughly enjoyed the book. I disagree with your thoughts on his intentions about his memorbilia.

:) -Sam
shellshot 3 years ago
You can enjoy the beauty of nature & the world around you without making your family suffer (by wondering daily about your whereabouts) & without making others find & have to clean up your remains in such a tragic way- imagine the hell they have to live with at finding a dead body?!
Goldhelmriel 3 years ago
who says they were suffering...he can do what he wants and go where he pleases.
Dollarbob 3 years ago
If you read the book or saw the movie any person could say his family suffered.
Sure he can do what he wants & go where he pleases- noone is debating this. But the next time a loved one of yours essentially disappears without a trace for weeks/months/years on end, please write back in & tell us how much you are NOT suffering.
Our choices impact others...deal with it.
Also, if you ever happen upon a dead body, tell us you aren't suffering with nightmares.
Goldhelmriel 3 years ago
I completely agree
JustAddWater69 3 years ago
I disagree with your points. The movie isn't about being young, fool-hearted, and stupid. Chris McCandless' goal wasn't to come out of the woods in hopes of publishing a book and making millions. What a senile thing to say. It saddens me that two people of your dare-I-say "maturity" would miss the point of the story completely.
JustAddWater69 3 years ago
he really thought he knew better, and that he actually WAS better than the modern world. foolhardy and stupid pretty much sums that up. they did mention that his intentions were romanticized.

I mean, you make these little movie reviews all the time, right?
What do you do it for? I doubt its' your passion unless you find something really magnificent about sticking your wrinkly old nose into the public with a half-assed opinion.

I can not beive that someone could say this about him. In MY opinion, these old people are IDIOTS. This video has made my blood boil. They did not understand a single thing that Into the Wild represented.
CocoaMonster 3 years ago

Goldhelmriel 3 years ago
thumbs downed you man. are you crazy? the bus was no different than a tent. you need some form of shelter.
Dollarbob 4 years ago
"You need some form of shelter"...My point exactly! He criticizes the rest of the world for needing various forms of shelter (ie. help), yet reverts to this shelter when needed. I just thought it was a bit hypocritical to criticize the rest of the world for not being minimalist when doing the exact same thing & not really 'living off the land' as he (and others) try to claim. No man is an island & we all need help & those who claim otherwise are disingenuous & self-righteous.

asromab3 4 years ago
You left something out.. "comfort, conservatism, EXPERIENCE AND WISDOM of their old age." Typical punk thinking...
xrm1996 4 years ago
So, because they are old and may be considered wise in some ways, that lends credibility to their statements? I have no problem with a personal opinion on a movie but just because they are old does not mean that their judgments about McCandless and his intentions are correct.
asromab3 4 years ago
First... OF COURSE experience and wisdom matter and as a vacuous 20-something whose had his grown-up brains for only a short time, you are just too deep in DK-squared to get that. And the guy in the movie... as someone who spends a crap load more time in the woods than 99.9% of the people reading this... he was an idiot and only another idiot would make him a hero.
xrm1996 4 years ago
age has nothing to do with wisdom. there are young people with expanded consciousness as well as older people--you can see it in the eyes always. lorenzo just happens to be a much older soul than marcia and that is reflected in marcia's totally linear way of perceiving as compared to free-flowing lorenzo. and as you may or may not know there are very few old souls walking around. too bad!
tonireed1 4 years ago
People who say that Chris was dumb miss the point. Chris had reached a level of understanding and awareness that it truly liberating and can only be found or experienced by removing yourself from the mold that society has formed around us. The fact that he died and whether or not he had a map is incidental and insignificant in my opinion. The true lesson to be learned is how he lived and the courage and wisdom with which he did so.
asromab3 4 years ago 2
As far as I know they didn't do anythign to deserve that, ever.
guitarboy22j 4 years ago
I admire McCandless a lot also, but I am not blind to his mistakes.
guitarboy22j 4 years ago
That said I think McCandless experienced more in his life and brought more wisdom to the world than many people ever have.
guitarboy22j 4 years ago
Selfish? Did you even watch the movie?
brettdavey 4 years ago 2
Selfish because he did not understand that an individual's actions impact others- such as one's family...caused untold grief b/c they agonized about his whereabouts & he had absolutely NO regard for their feelings about this. Did not even bother to contact his sister, with whom he was supposedly close with. As far as skinning the 'moose'- he didn't even realize it was a carabou.
Goldhelmriel 4 years ago
Read the book. It was a moose.
steph103187 3 years ago
Yes the book says it was a moose, based on his diary, which is just one of its many inaccuracies. The actual moose hunters who found him & other game experts have identified what he killed was a caribou. They would know.
Also, he took the advice of hunters from South Dakota, instead of Alaskans who are more familiar with that type of game & preserving it in that particular climate.
Point is,following the wisdom of Thoreau & Jack London should extend to also preparing properly as they did.

21chuck 4 years ago 2
I would challenge your statement that he was intelligent. He was book smart but head dumb.

yeshuaserver 4 years ago
Yeah, it seems cliche to say, again, but as a young man, the interpretation is completely different than older peoples who focus much less on the "enlightenment" (a word I feel is fully appropriate although seldom used) aspect. Not so much the "beautiful west of america" deal.
Anyway - the book is good. I advocate it highly.

I think these two are dead on regarding "Into the Wild." there is a lot to like about this film, but in the end I thought the kid was a knucklehead. more power to him for living his short life the way he wanted, but a little common sense would have gone a long way (he could have grown up to be Jeremiah Johnson, who obviously knew what he was doing)
truemike 4 years ago
I don't think common sence had much to do with it. Sure he could have brought a map. I'm sure he had the resourses to bring a pickuptruck and steak and potatos to last him a year... that wasn't the point. The point was to go out and survive on his own.
michaud535 4 years ago
i think these two just do not understand the movie at all. I believe you said as you get older you celebrate being "foolhardy" less. I believe it is as you become older you lose your feeling of invincibility which leads you to become cautious, maybe too cautious. As we all know we are going to die, how many of us really live out our dreams as chris did.
litcguitarist 4 years ago

But in this case he clearly wasn't.

you're taking my words out of context; I'm simply stating that at one point in history man survived in the wild with no supplies no knowledge no experience, then as man evolved so to did he learn to live in the wild.

I miss your point and I watched it again. Where was the ridicule?

i was replying to litcguitarist's comments. not the video, sorry for the misunderstanding.
unless of course you knew that, thus i will quote, "i think these two just do not understand the movie at all." - litcguitarist (3 days ago), which shows a hint of disregard of the opinions of the two elders in the video.

Got it! This was my first post. I will get used to reading better. I too like the "Geezers" So refreshing and interesting.

I hope I get to be as smart as these two when I grow up.

I love these two. They are wonderful.
