This is a dreadful song that Whitney did as a favor to her record company and Aretha for Aretha's duets album. Whitney would never put such a piece of trash on her album. Whitney did this same favor for her cousin, Dionne with a Brillo-pad voice. Again, she was smart enough not to put that one on her album too. Very charitable of her!!!
Thanx 4 this Gr8 post K'02! I Never tire of listening 2 this vocal powerhouse showdown! Has hit allover it BUT was a dissappointing flop?!?!? It's Xistence is largely ignored even N 80s countdowns?!?!? MayB there was Whitney & Aretha Oversaturation on the radio & TV @ the time (Can we say GLUT)? This should've been the "Boy is Mine" of the L8 80s!!! Sum1 repackage it & reRelease it please;~) Waaay 2 few people out there remember this Un4gettable duet anyways.....
Aretha can't be compared to any other singer period. She is in a league all her own that no one can touch. Whitney was great but doesn't do like the one and only Aretha.
@GTownSinger nooo wayy bro whitney is more powerful, can hold high notes longer and has been awardered more than ever other female artist because she is the greatest voice ever!!
Aretha taught whitney everything she knows. Whitney LOST the gift she HAD. She made a terrible mistake. Arethat is The Ultimate diva whitney can't even compare.
@zchyboy762 bullshit!! she has had more success and she can acutlly sing powerful notes and hold them unlike aretha who just screams and runs outa breathe. whitney is at the very top aretha is like 4th or somthnig celine is better than her and MC and leano i would say
boy oh boy the voice the voice the voice...no accolade no type of certificat and no amount of album sales can take away that whitney houston is the one thats IS the one...
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Once upon a time Whitney Houston was able to hold her own with the Queen of Soul but now, she's nothing but a shadow of her former self, vocally. I've heard her new album, and it's forgettable, to say the very least. Crack is whack, kids.
I have respect for Aretha because she is the Queen of Soul but I prefer Whitney. Aretha did have a good voice in her prime time but I feel like Whitney is "The Voice" because she (Whitney) has such a beautiful voice which cannot be compared to any other female vocalist. I'm sorry Aretha fans.
I prefer Whitney because she sings in a complete voice. I get a great feeling listening to Whitney's music the same way you get it by listening to Aretha. We have exceptional yet different tastes in music.
I'm not saying that you shouldn't love Whitney nor am i saying that it is wrong for you to love her more. But good doesn't describes Aretha's voice her voice and amazing. And thats all i was saying.
Oh yeah, sorry. You're right about that. Aretha does have an amazing, exceptional voice and "good" is a word that would be used to describe vocalists like Beyonce.
beyonce is the bomb! she lacks power like whitney but her control and creshendo make her a great vocalist...ppl sleep on her. she's no aretha or whitney but she's GREAT!
@TheNippyFan well respect your point. but think whitney came 30 years after aretha with different audiovisual technology, not talking of vocal technics
Björn Borg or Rafa Nadal? both N.1, diferent time
Hold up no one can hit a G#5 in full voice. No one. And everything after C5 is mixing. And for Aretha to be passed her prime she hold her G#5 longer than Whitney in this video.
hahah are you deaf?? I dont mean to be rude but whitney does'nt ever use mix she belts in full voice all the time which is not healthy for her voice.... she cant sing today because she did drogs and she used her full voice to much in the high notes and that was really impressive.
No are you deaf. Of course Whitney used mixed. Whitney would use dominant. Aretha was the first singer known to hit octave note in chest. Mixed voice is a more impressive techniqe because there is only so much you can do in chest. And for Aretha to sing in mix she always mantain a full tone. And also overuse chest is bad for the voice. Thats why Whit voice began to show decline in 1992. She was only 29. While Aretha at 29 was getting better.
@TheQueenAretha No!...Whitney voice did not decline in 1992...it did change..but it became sultry..some of her best vocals where done after 1992...Perfect example.."Preachers Wife Sndtrck!
Aretha sounds surprisingly grannyish here considered that 10 yrs later her voice seemed much fresher in Divas show.
Anyways I think none of them is better because they're so different.
Aretha has wider range and power that makes her more versatile thruout the song. But her timbre sometimes gets harsh.
Whitney on the other hand also has the power plus beautiful timbre and more elaborated melismas which alltogether suits romantic ballads but yet she's monotous to listen for a long time.
Well we can agree to disagree. But Aretha in her prime was nothing to mess with. And i can bet if Whitney was around in Aretha prime it still wouldn't make a difference.
How can one have proof that one artist is incomparable? Isn't that a given for any original artist. It is matter of preference and taste. Certain things are simply SUBJECTIVE. Surely you understand that millions will disagree with you. There is a reason that many say Whitney is THE VOICE just as there is a reason why Aretha was named Queen of Soul. You cannot compare these 2 anyways. Totally different in style and delivery. Whitney is more of a torch song ballad singer,
I get what you are saying. I is a about what opinion. I can get a little carried away. But every singers is different. Whether it is their style or their delivery. Also it is the way they make you feel. When i listen to Aretha's music, i feel like i am on cloud nine. When i am listening to her interprete a song. No other singer has made me feel like that and that is the reason why i take things to heart when someone is down sizing her.
Hmm, just a suggestion, but you might check out La India and Martha Wash. As legendary as Aretha is, they're just about as deserving of the royal moniker. One of em is called the queen of salsa for a reason (and they're both among the greatest house music divas of all time too). To be clear, I'm not saying they're better, but on close to the same level in terms of ability.
This song blends much better (Whitneywise) with I'm Your Baby Tonight than the Whitney album: It's Nippy's and Ree's 1st New Jack Swing song. It's quite a change from most of bost artists' '80s material. It should have been a bigger hit in 1989 given the superstar pairing and new style for both artists.
Totally agree. This was a commercial flop by both their standards. This New JAck Swing Remix has got a lot of flava and rolls like a steam engine uphill, lol. These 2 ladies make most modern RnB Divas look and sound like a piece of pityful s**t!
Wow! This is the New Jack Swing Remix. I still have this in vinyl. Ohhh yes!
