This is a dreadful song that Whitney did as a favor to her record company and Aretha for Aretha's duets album. Whitney would never put such a piece of trash on her album. Whitney did this same favor for her cousin, Dionne with a Brillo-pad voice. Again, she was smart enough not to put that one on her album too. Very charitable of her!!!

No are you deaf. Of course Whitney used mixed. Whitney would use dominant. Aretha was the first singer known to hit octave note in chest. Mixed voice is a more impressive techniqe because there is only so much you can do in chest. And for Aretha to sing in mix she always mantain a full tone. And also overuse chest is bad for the voice. Thats why Whit voice began to show decline in 1992. She was only 29. While Aretha at 29 was getting better.

Aretha sounds surprisingly grannyish here considered that 10 yrs later her voice seemed much fresher in Divas show.

Anyways I think none of them is better because they're so different.

Aretha has wider range and power that makes her more versatile thruout the song. But her timbre sometimes gets harsh.

Whitney on the other hand also has the power plus beautiful timbre and more elaborated melismas which alltogether suits romantic ballads but yet she's monotous to listen for a long time.

Also it is the way they make you feel. When i listen to Aretha's music, i feel like i am on cloud nine. When i am listening to her interprete a song. Hmm, just a suggestion, but you might check out La India and Martha Wash. As legendary as Aretha is, they're just about as deserving of the royal moniker. One of em is called the queen of salsa for a reason (and they're both among the greatest house music divas of all time too). To be clear, I'm not saying they're better, but on close to the same level in terms of ability.

This song blends much better (Whitneywise) with I'm Your Baby Tonight than the Whitney album: It's Nippy's and Ree's 1st New Jack Swing song. It's quite a change from most of bost artists' '80s material. It should have been a bigger hit in 1989 given the superstar pairing and new style for both artists.
