It can be, it depends on what you use. But no matter what you use, it's always a LOT of work (you have to collect a lot of resources, write the story, and actually put it all together), and you have to be familiar with your tools, but it's easier to, say, use Game Maker or RPG Maker or Python than to use C++.
Really nice. I like the sprites (anything larger than 24 by 24 pixels is too hard for me!). I think it's great you got a team together, too. It must be hard getting programmers/artists/etc to want to work on the same project!
True, or its a way to convey the amount of control you have over the universe you made. As it could be comparable to the imagined concepts of God's power.
I think programming is about as close as you can get to being an actual god. Yes, biologists can play with existing material, but we get to create things from scratch, and design our own rules. :D
Actually what got me into making games was my curiosity for how things work. This meant that not only would I be able to investigate reality, but also alternate realities, thus why most of the programs and make, and record videos of, are simulations of either reality, or some alien physical process. :)
are you serious? You're working with constaints and limitations and the design and rules follow limitations. IF not, then all rpg's would look different. Instead everything looks like an rmxp game.
"We have a battle system working but right now it's text" - lol, you have to be joking, even I have made a more complicated (but not complicated at all) text battle system than that. It took away hp's from health. lol. Ok so it wasn't much more complicated, but calling that a working ...
@liquidmetaltech Working as in Functional. These things take iterations to write, and you don't just start by writing GUI code and implementing functionality later.
It's sort of like how you don't finish all the graphics before you even start writing the game. You need a working engine before you put a shiny shell on it.
... a working battle system is a joke. It would be correct to say you have the base of it set up without bugs. But implying that is finished is stupid.
P.s. for a game made from scratch why does it lag so much? It lags like rmxp lags. And rmxp lags way too much.
lussikka why dun u move on to 3D? im not sayin wut ur doin is bad, i just wanna know why sum1 so skilled as u wont do up ur game. or maybe ur a 2D bigot?
Oh, and OpenGL is currently in a "transition state", as version 3 just came out, so I don't want to get too comfortable with 2, but there's not a ton out there for 3 yet.
Eh. The school's programming class don't do much as far as teaching us much that'd be good for game programming, it's something I've had to learn on my own.
This here is a software engineering class, so he only teaches jargon and how much documentation is required for "real" projects. ;P
C# is pretty good. I wouldn't suggest VB for making games (from personal experience, heh). Some would argue with me on that, but I think C++, Java, or C# are almost almost almost always better choices for games than VB.
It's turn based like FF, though if I get the graphics done it'll look more like Phantasy Star or Dragon Quest (first person, you look straight ahead at them).
If I run out of time, it'll be text XD But I can always update this after the deadline.
Like I said, sorry for being a bit rough, but that's what happens in the real world. Most people don't give critiques in a huggy-huggy fashion, but lay it out thick (even GyroVorbis makes good point of this). As far as team work skills goes, you just have to learn to accept it. It huts, but that's life. It's not like I haven't gotten my fair share of smack downs over my own stuff.
Ban me again if you like, killing the messenger doesn't change the message.
We've been working on it since late January. The music is public domain (one of the other team members found 'em) so I don't know where it's from or who wrote it.
I hope you get a really good mark for this project, I know it's easy to get a little disenchanted when doing these kind of projects for classes (i'm only in sixth form but i've been working on a long project myself), but hang in there and keep it up :D
Got tired of playing with Multithreading && Sockets, esp for a college class, so put it on hold or whatever and made Rawr Rinth instead for said class.
By the look of the project, the game would be fun to play. I recently got into SDL, I am learning from a book called Focus on SDL by Ernest Pazera. once I get enough knowledge in SDL I will work on making a level editor which is my plan.
Nice! I'm looking forward to seeing this progress. We are working on a brawler (with a plot) ourselves. Under contract at the Evergreen State College. Must be nice to actually have mentors to turn to for advice and such, one of the complaints I have about my college is the "sink or swim" teach yourself of FAILness of it. Look forward to seeing your updates. peace
I'm just in a CS class at school. Some people are making phone apps and other things, but we went with a game because that's what I'm experienced with. So yeh, no mentors here. ~_~
Same teacher that I had for a diff class I made Rawr Rinth for.
I'm actually a business major (2nd degree, 1st degree was in Video Production) The way evergreen works is you get things called "contracts" where you state what you are doing, reading, goals, ect. Then you find a teacher that thinks it has educational merit. My proposal was focused on project management and John's was on programing. Essentially we get educational credit for doing our project and the teacher just checks off that we did what we stated we would. Others involved are paid/volunteers
I like the music alot.

@liquidmetaltech CamStudio is why, not so much the game itself.
I'm sure RMXP is also way more optimized than my homemade engine, being as it's made to make a profit.

Lusikka* Spell your Finnish words right, you. ;P XD
Okay, first, do you know how much harder it is to write 3D games?
Secondly, I suck at 3D modeling, whereas I'm fairly decent with 2D graphics.
There's still quite a bit I want to do with 2D stuff, and I do play with 3D everysooften, but I don't think I could make anything decent yet.
I'm also studying up on OpenGL to use for my 2D as well, since that'd make it hardware rendered and could do random fancy effects. :o
