  • My wrist was also locked severly in the past because i played my patterns exersises far to much on beat now i place everything off beat.Another big mistake i made was to practise different patterns to much isolated from eachother now i mix them up in syncopation.Damnation my guitarteacher couldn,t learn me this and the conseratory either.

  • nice lesson dude!! one question, how to get Paul Gilbert sound?? I mean the amp setting. Thanks a lot!

  • holy shit. glasgow kiss dude your fucking awesome.

  • @Gactivefy don't tense up when picking, just relax.

  • so much fluff, so little information; Great playing though but could've used a better instructional. I call redo!

  • what pick u use?

  • So I discovered i was picking with wrong technique the past 8 years after watching some paul gilbert myself.. and its a bitch to completely switch and build speed all over again. I can pick 16th notes accurately with wrist only but any quicker my forearm starts to get involved... how do you move your damn wrist that fast

  • Hey there! Paul Gilbert is one of my favorite guitar players, and you totally have the same wrist action that he does. I see how its done, yet my arm still wants to fly all over and yea it does get sore and the sound is somewhat sloppy. I can pick 32nd notes at around 120 but the elbow and forearm tire out pretty quick. How did you train your right arm to stay in place and transfer all the picking motion just to the wrist?

  • 14 dislikes? wtf?

  • Someone likes Paul Gilbert :D

    And is awesome. :D

  • could you maybe go into detail about paul's outside picking technique? such as in his piano lick thats on youtube?

  • questo e' veramente il piu gaggio di tutti...

sta gente che si riprende mettendola come se fossero delle star...

se voglio vedere una spiegazione a sto punto mi vedo paul gilbert, visto che fai le sue stesse cose...

  • @foreverhoads English!! Do You Speak It??

  • @remyhansen Italian! Do you speak it?!

  • @foreverhoads Obviously not -.-

  • do you know what kind of picks paul uses material/guage?

  • @buckeyelover1978 paul now uses Jim Dunlop .60mm tortex picks but back in the 80's and 90's he used 1.00mm Ibanez picks.

  • Did you use a metronome to help get you speed picking up?

  • ur an awsome guitarist

  • ha new influence

    your awesome man

  • Another thing the the greats tell about speed picking is in order to pick fast you have to start off slow. How do you think you would be able to pick a lick fast if you can't even pick it slow? Another thing to sync the hands together is a metronome. Above all practice!! These guys weren't born picking fast they started off just like you and me.

  • nice vid, really enlightened me

  • hey man that steve vai lick is that from a song or just an improv causeif its from a song tell me by the way fucken sick!

  • hei man how did you improve your lefthand technique . .?? i can speed up my right hand technique but my left hand doesnt fit to it . . ? kindly help thank you . .nid ur opinion

  • Nice!

  • Hey remy, great video as usual :)

I have another question though, it's completely unrelated to the video hahah.

Now though, does your strap, which i think is a dunlop cliplock strap, stay on even while youre like throwing the guitar around?

  • hey remy have a question about your thumb does it move ? it seems like it moves along with your wrist ? also for the right hand mechanics, say your doing a 3 note pattern on the 5 fret low E string , when moving your right hand do you release the 5th fret note after fretting the 7th note or do you let the finger rest on the 5th fret?

  • Hey there,

    Can you be more specific?

    Send me a PM please.

  • Do you have any tips for getting my hands synced?

  • When you say it helps if you have a Ibanez RG type of guitar it helps, what if I'm using a Fender Stratocaster is there a difference?

  • thanks man, wasnt sure i was doing it right

  • so when speed picking, every note gets one pick? is there any legato or all picked

    your damn amazing!!

  • I try to pick from the wrist ALL THE time. buuut it just goes over to be elbow picking (just fast licks)! i have been playing for 10 months. i have tried to pick with the wrist for 1-2 months now. can somebody give me some tips please!

  • hey, i feel for you dude, i used to pick with my elbow and could play certain things brilliant like bation licks and what ever but i'm telling you, wrist is the way to go. I switched to wrist about six months ago and it takes a long time, just keep your wrist fast and try to get a nice, controlled natural movement, don't worry about metronome at first.

  • it takes ages to make the wrist good enough. It helps if you;d already bin playing for a couple of years, just go for synchronization between both hands, you will realise the picking becomes easier than the fretting hand soon enough. Just make sure youe left hand is fast enouh to cope with your right hands picking. and watch paul gilbert vids his scales and licks are great to practice.

  • from the wrist not the thumb?=p

  • Remy!

    A quick question.

Do you anchor your wrist on the bridge when you play?

  • I Always anchor on my Bridge!

But I don't mute the strings all the time:-)

  • I feel enlightened now LOL

    Thank you man! :)

  • Brilliant picking! Thanks!

  • well you could use your whole forearm for speed picking, it's not a very efficient way, but atleast you'll have the john petrucci ripped forearm look.

  • first i thought it was helpful

then i found out that apart from saying

    "PLAY FROM THE WRIST"

    you only show off

    which does not help anybody

    phew

  • Awesome, man! You're very good and has helped me A LOT! Your're GOD! :)

    Rock on

  • resident evil is a great game

  • Tonamandude quote:

No, resident evil was the best game (i say was because the 5 was shit)

  • Its cool!

Can i ask u what type of your string and which brand?ghs?or ERNIE BALL?THANK U

  • damn , u can really pick like paul gilbert ...

thats what i see , could u tell me how 2 set my amp so it sounds like the way ur amp did ??

    anyway , great job dude ! :)

  • yep the only guy who pulls off arm picking is Rusty cooley/ and he even combine the two wrist and arm i mean.... u know what i mean( batio is just a creep with that anchored finger style lol but i like him

  • great picking ;)

he sounds like "the comic book guy" in the begining of the clip

  • if you want to go faster.....like rusty cooley and michael angio batio (not because i like or dislike them, but they´re both fast/good shredders) you must use both your wrist and your forearm.... combine them...

Nice vid and you got skillz man

  • awesome! man, I love your tone!

  • Does masturbation help wrist acceleration?

  • no I think its a bad combination.. jacking off does not in any way help guitar playing, if something, vice versa

  • your pretty awesome dude! I love how you mention a player, and then you play something and you can really hear what you are changing to sound like that player, like the staccatto in the paul gilbert stuff. awesome playing dude

  • hey remy

about the example that you use at 1:21 instead of picking harder on certain notes (this didnt work for me) i found it easier to play when counting in triples thanks for helping me pick faster :D

  • i laugh at the usage of the entire forearm. i don't speak for anyone when i comes to picking posture but... ugh.

    wrist >>> forearm.

  • oh wow what song is that at 2:20?

  • it's john petrucci's glasgow kiss ..

  • yeah sick guitar part :)

  • its wasnt a lesson..u just showed us ur skills which are very good

  • how do you get your tone? laney?

  • Nope Engl.

  • whats the best to hold the picks... tight or relax?

  • actually john petrucci totally spazzes out his arm when going hyper speeds.

  • ya, ur rite, his playing is so fast it controls the space time contunuum, it dosen't matter if he's moving his arm or his wrist becuz he moves them bother. XDDD

  • how long a day do you practice to shred like that?

  • Good stuff, thx!

  • you teach with the same exercices as paul, awesom!!!

  • you are crazy man! nice job

  • :0

Time to redo my picking technique... Haha. I had the right angle but not the right movement. Thanks!

  • you really like poul... i like him too!!!

  • lets have his babies!

then set fire to his genitals so he cant hoe down with anyone else! >:3

  • You r00lz!

  • Thats my problem, I get the forearm thing going, I can't seem to focus on just the wrist, well, I can't pick really fast, maybe its how I'm holding the pick, I'm not sure.

  • You're great man, love the setup, love the advice.

    I want your guitarr

  • Thanks so much for the advice. Extremely helpful!

  • omfg, my face melted into a pile of goo on an instructional video

  • ok thanks ill try but is that how you started like doing it slowly then faster and faster and eventully you got were you are now? andf in the vide both hands are going at the same speed right. well thanks

  • hey man ur really good but how did you syncronize both of your hands cause when i try it both hands are not going like at the same time, how did you make both hand syncronize good like that, it sounds awsome

  • Well, you'd have to start very , very slowly at first.

Then when it gets more comfortable, try speeding it up.

Once that's in sync, try it as fast as posible that it becomes a controlled reflex!

    Good luck!

  • have a problem i try to hold the pick like paul,i have the grip but after a while it starts to hurt my index finger is this something thats going disapear after i get used to it or am i doing something wrong any help plz :)

  • Well , It shouldn't hurt when you play!

That's al I know! Maybe you're gripping the pick to hard??

    Dunno

  • well tanx, btw fuckin amazing videos i have seen most of them and they rock :)

  • A lot of players like Yngwie and Jason Becker(used to), they use their pinky as an anchor against the pick guard. It helps consistency in hand motion and helps prevent unnecessary forearm motion.

Take a look at an Yngwie video.

  • exactly.....this came natural to me...just felt right when i strated to try. ummmm now i don't know if u have one but maybe a vid on the proper muting techs because i have heard somepretty bad muting.

  • dude you're a good guitar player, and this video helped alot! PG is my favorite guitar player and I feel like you've really kind of answered the the biggest problem on fast picking. 5 stars man good job!

  • Thanks man!

    Glad it helped you too!!

    Best,

    Remy

  • I have a question for you, in those fast licks is each note played in those phrases double picked?

  • Hey there!

    Nope, each note picked once.

  • Wow thats really amazing! If you would answer 1 more question for me, how long does that technique take to develop?

  • Sorry but that depends really, nobody's alike.

Just keep practicing and you'll get it!

  • dude even the way u explain stuff is the way paul gilbert does, i mean the body language and the hand movements lol. a true fan i guess. great leasson too.

  • have a problem i try to hold the pick like paul,i have the grip but after a while it starts to hurt my index finger is this something thats going disapear after i get used to it or am i doing something wrong any help plz :)

  • I tell you what mate, you've got your technique nailed. I'm in awe. Love the tone too. Would appreciate it if you get let me know your set up for this video. I've got the PGM 301 and a Laney GH100L (Paul Gilbert fan? me? never!) but never found a tone I'm happy with.

    Cheers in advance

  • Tone comes from the fingers mate, Remy uses an ENGL powerball, It's a brilliant amp and costs around £1200

I also have a PGM301 and a GH100L and can get a PG tone easily, what cab are you running through?

    My settings are

    Presence-8

    Bass-7

    Treble-5

    Middle-7

    Gain-8

    Drive-8

    Resonance on,give it a go :)

  • dude whats in your rig? it sounds killer!

  • I seriously like sit here with my mouth open.

  • I got a guitar about 8 months ago, and I have been enthralled by it. I haven't been able to put it down. Now, this video definitely helped me on my quick picking techniques. At first I learned basic chords, then I tried developing my own style, and playing fast seems much more fun. Although, I still think that playing for hours a day is the best advice to anyone. The more you play, the better you are...right? This video helped me a lot though.

  • hey man, this video is great, i have tried it though, and i don't quite understand how to do it. i was wondering if u see this comment if you could post a response telling me how you started to practice and get better at the all wrist technique

  • You're playing like Paul Gilbert and talking a bit like him ( in sense of what you say)

  • So what kind of picks do you use?

    Great Lesson and Playing!

  • Check out his 'What Pick To Use?' video. :)

  • i think its a tortex orange (.60mm)

  • correct! same like paul gilbert

  • Hey man pretty good vid! lol if i made a picking vid i would just say go watch some PG vids and copy that but then again its not quite as easy as it sounds to just play using only your wrist, well at least not for me anyway. i always find myself using my forearm a bit when im really trying to push myself (which is pretty much all the time) and can only sort of use my wrist when im a bit more relaxed and playing slower stuff. any tips to help me nail this wrist picking a bit better bro?

  • dude, ur playing is awesome!!!!

but ur advise is just as good!

i started playing around with the wrist idea

i did play mostly with my wrist, but i just started focusing on my righ hand more and trying to make it replicate yours, and now my picking is 8 times stronger/faster/cleaner and just all around better man, thanks a lot for ur tips and ill be checing out pablo gilbertos get out of my yard dvd for sure :D

    cheers mate!

  • I'm glad it's helping so many people!

    Keep it up!

    Remy

  • it's normal for your hand to feel weird at the beggining.alternate picking seems un natural at first but it's the best way to get your two hands in sink, and the only way to control the attack when speed picking.try the exercise remy does at 1.20' on the b and e strings ,always starting with a down stroke say at the fifth fret, and work it up to speed.try staying in control, keep your notes clean..be able to mute with the palm of your picking hand if you wishetc.that should give you a first feel...

  • my problem is alternate picking. i feel like when it's an "UP" stroke on the next string I feel like my hand is jumping slightly over to be able to pick that "UP" stroke and it causes me to screw up. is this typical for just starting to alternate pick? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

  • Don't you do guys the same(orrekorre,PnTNecrosis ) - as you say proving yourself, just by say that Remy's videos doesn't help. It really helps to people as you read the comments from watchers.

  • Hi! in this video you use .60mm picks to fast picking??? really????

  • Hey! Yes I do!

  • Great! :) and another question please...what are the shape's pick? you change the shape's pick??

  • laney???

  • WRIST!!!!! Woot

Ok .... ima start practicing wrist!!!1

  • Great tutorial and shredding! BTW, this guitar has PAF Pro's?

  • Thanx man! Yes it does I believe!

  • your guitar sounded damn cleaN...YOU must have very expensive mics.

  • resident evil ftw

  • done be a paul gilbert clone!btw u have great articulation and coordination

  • you have inspired me

    Thanks alot

    Krankshredder

  • yes, its from the fucking wrist, i get it, nice tips

  • Good advice here remy...

  • You Are Musicians in thailand, You are The Tycoon Band Yes Or No? I can Remembered you. I'm The tycoon Fanclub. Miss you Remy

  • I was yeah!

    How are you?

  • I'm Fine. you know, you are my guitar Hero. Since the tycoon Band. ( i can speak English a little bit, I Hope you get it.) you are my inspired to make me start to play guitar. and i love solo in "Phoo phaa" song. it Graet. Where Are You now?

  • Hey man - great vid! How long did it take you to get that fast? I'm working on my speed and I'm only at 16th notes at 130 right now. Also, how do you get your inside picking to catch up to your outside picking - it's so much more awkward for me!

  • Hey dude!

I just think that keeping a very relaxed right hand is the key to this!

And start slow and evenly with picking in or outside the strings!

    Goodluck man,

    Remy

btw, you should try Mr. big's " Colorado Bulldog"

    It's a lot of 16th notes at 140BPM!

  • You ever check Eddie Van Halen's trem picking style? That stuff is wierd. Wonder how he came to pick that way?

  • YES! IBANEZ! YOU ROCK!

  • RESIDENT EVIL ZERO! WOOT!

    btw you kick ass

  • Just when I was beginning to think no one knew how to pick.

Awesome tone btw! I've always shyed away from signature models though. Might just get the pickup set.

  • you rock too hard to be true.

  • Hey enduggy!

You really should check out John Petrucci's speed picking again! It's from the wrist dude! I've been studying , examining and playing those guys stuff since 1990.

Believe me, it's from the wrist!

And yes, Michael Angelo is a great shredder( I hate that name!) , but his way of picking only seems to work for him!

He is a great guy btw, I had the pleasure of drinking a beer with him and play/ trade the guitar!

    Cheers,

    Remy

  • Probably why you suck and remyhansen so obviously doesnt.

    Go figure.

  • Yeah probably... you rule man!

  • Uhhh... Shawn Lane? Blasts MAB completely out of the water, and guess what... Wrist.

  • Ahhh.. wont you develope RSI if u keep persisting.....

  • enduggy,

MAB actually picks from his wrist. Looks can be deceiving especially as he has quite an unorthodox style of picking.

And John Petrucci also picks from his wrist. He only uses his elbow to change strings.

Picking shouldn't "hurt." Good guitar technique is all about being as relaxed as possible. If you know what RSI is, you'll know that tensing your picking for long periods of time will lead you to future problems.

  • This helped ALOT man...Great videos...

    Peace!!

  • hey how long did it take you to ge t that fast?

  • Have you played the engl fireball? the powerball sounds good but doe the fireball sounds the same? great video by the way, simple straight to the point, fast.

  • Hey Remy, I was just wondering how long have you been playing and how long do you practice on average?

  • hes been playing for 23 years.

  • out of what song is the riff at 2:19 - 2:27?

  • that's "Glasgow Kiss" (from John Petrucci - Suspended Animation) ;)

  • great vid. i LOL'd when you used your whole arm to pick XD very silly. i don't even know how some people do it. it's just too awkward.

  • I am wondering if you could teach me how to play cleanly and where to put my left index finger when I press the string.

  • You may find it best to press the strings only with the tip of your fingers, and try to comfortably get them as close as possible to being perpendicular to the fretboard. And don't do the "banana" where the last joint of your finger curves towards your palm.

  • thanks a lot. it was very gracious of you to answer my question.

  • I'm glad to have helped ^_^

  • Hey,

Where should my palm be? Should I actually rest it on the bridge?

    Thanks,

    Ray.

  • Hey Ray!

Actually it should be there yes!

Just be carefull not to mute everything doing that!

    Good luck!

    Remy

  • i have a few questions

im using an Ibanez RG350ex which has a humbucker single humbucker pickups

    my question is

1)how do i place my wrist properly ?

should it be in one spot to move freely when playing all 6 strings or

should my palm move a bit when im playing high strings and top low strings ?

or should i just stretch it when playing high strings ?

2)which side of the pickup should i pick ?

between neck and middle or bridge and middle pickup ?

    thanks !

  • what the hell

    you played very fast

    amazing 23x

    omgomgomgomgomgomgomgomgomgomgomgo

    gomgomgomgomgomgomgomgomg.

    0_0

make more vids dude! i really want to see you in action again!

  • Amazing insight in picking dynamics. Thanks for sharing. you are really an amazing player.

  • Thank's for the video, it's what I looked for.

You play this way, also when you play with the clean channel? Always with the wrist on the bridge?

    Thank you.

    Pietro

  • Hey there!

Yep! almost always! You need a good anchor point for your hand.Another point : It doesn't matter what sound/effect you use, try to keep the same playing technique to get things done!

    Thanx,

    Remy

  • Thank you very much for this great video!

My only problem is that my left hand actually is too slow and i just cant get it to work faster.

Can you suggest anything about this problem?

  • play incredible slow and relaxed, A LOT

  • holy shit.

    O_O

  • hey great lesson dude it helped me a lot, you pick just like PG =)

  • Great video. Your accent reminds me of Mattias IA Eklundh. :D

  • Okay, I've been working on using my wrist more for a little over a week now and I can see how it has improved my playing. I notice that when I try to get faster, my arm tenses up A LOT. Will this hinder me in anyway? Does your arm tense up when you play fast?

  • Nope!

    It's very, very relaxed!

    Good luck!

    Remy

  • And that'll subside over time?

  • A tensed-up arm will subside as soon as you make a conscious effort to play relaxed. It won't disappear without a change in technique, and it would benefit you not to expect it to. Just practice playing things slowly and loosely (with just enough pressure to get the notes sounding clearly), and when it has become second nature, playing fast will be much easier.

  • Hey man, you play really well! But I have a question for you: can you explain what kind of movement you do with the wrist( side to side, oscillation or door knob movement etc. etc.)?

  • Dude, where do you go about placing your arm when you are playing? Do you keep it floating or do you place on the bridge or what?

  • Hey!

I actually have it most of the time on the bridge.

But lightly otherwise I'd be palm-muting everything. And that's not the goal!

  • Great lesson man. Be great to show the mechanics of the wrist from a side angle. Nice work.

  • Now, is your wrist supposed to move up and down or in a rotating motion. Both?

  • this is to dethloverchic06

Your wrist should do a down up motion.

Think of it kind of like this

    down towards the floor

    up towards the ceiling

I have seen many players who blame their unsyncrinized playing on their right hand when its actually their left hand falling behind

"Your left hand is the steer, your right hand is the gas, if you can't steer, then you shouldn't press the gas" Paul Gilbert

so work on lots of legato and finger independence! :D

I hope some of that helps!

  • Thanks.

  • hey man, can you do a video on left hand playing???
