OMG you chilled the stout? ARE YOU FREAKING INSANE. You americans shouldn't be allowed to buy our beer if you are chilling it. You are used to drinking cold beer because your beers are so bad that you have to have them cold so you can't taste anything. Cold numbs the tastebuds. Do the brewers a favour and drink the beer the way it should be drank. By the way, youngs stout is the money.
Had my first earlier today and I agree with the comments and BA reviews: Definitely let this particular brew warm up. It tastes A LOT better than fridge-cold IMO. Great review.
Youngs is a great very dark beer. I prefer to enjoy Youngs on draft rather than in the bottle or the cans. To me, the draft version is smoother and a little more flavorful to my taste buds.
I mostly got a "wooden" taste when I tried this chocolate stout and only HINTS of chocolate. Wasn't too impressed with it, but it does make a good winter brew, however.
I love this beer, it's one of my go to choices as a beer to have with a meal. I also totally agree on the temperature thing, the colder the better. I had Samichlaus at room temperature once, and that was pretty rough.
I poured a 15oz can of this(I prefer it over the bottle, much like guinness) and drank it to this review. Just a fantastic beer, and a fun as hell review to watch. Glad I could share the drink with ya!
Here's a trick to get the right temp for a stout: Take two bottles of stout, put one in the fridge and leave one in room temp. Once the fridge is a cold as it's going to get pour half of each into a glass and you should get a temp of about 55 degree.
Granted that means you have to drink 2-4 beers at once but if you have another guy your drinking with it works out pretty good.
I really enjoyed this beer. Like chocolate milk! You should try some beers at room temp though. You will notice a big difference especially from the more extreme beers. Even if you let it sit in the glass for 10-15 mins before you get into it can make a huge difference in taste. But the way I see you chuggin those beers, I guess the chances of that are pretty slim! Hahaha, keep havin fun with it man. Cheers.
One of my all time favourite beers, shame that I live in a small town so I don't get to buy it that often. Love your videos Joe, keep up the good work!
Hey Joe D, I truly recommend you get a couple of bottles of Wells' Banana Bread Beer, I had it when I was working in England, and let me tell you, I absolutely loved it. It tasted a little too much like bananas for me and not quite enough like beer, but it certainly is a treat. Check it out! GET IT!
just drank my first youngs double choc stout while watching this video. must agree with the light scent of chocolate almost unnoticeable and the great start with lots of flavor. very exciting to my tastebuds. anyways, you asked my opinion and u got it. cheers!
Lol, this is the first semi-serious craft beer review where the reviewer straight-up belches like that while drinkin. Funny shit. Anyway, if you haven't already you should also try the canned (nitro widget) version of this beer. They're pretty different. Obviously, the canned version is a lot creamier and looks a lot nicer. Bottled version supposedly has more flavor and aroma (I haven't tried it yet, actually about to run out and grab a 4pack tho).
Good review! Picked one up yesterday, me and a friend had to stay up doing math assignments, this double chocolate stout topped the day off perfectly!
(btw, you have a nice nose haha, and no I'm not gay :)
i got more chocolate from the rogue chocolate stout. still good though and i'm bought to wathch the banana bread beer after this cuz i already tried it and want to know what you think. i think the smell is just like the bread and the taste is equally is good but i don't know what hops smell like so can't really pass judgement.
1st I apologize for this message being in 2 or 3 parts but it's because of youtube's comment length limit. I am a wordy person and refuse to sound like Tonto when discussing beer. I have loved Young's since 95 but certain complications arose, when you drink it in public. Most people were curious about "black beer" and when 22y/o girls heard "chocolate" in a beer name, Jame Gumb and the Goodbye Horses dance was the only thing that could've stopped them and when they tasted it, you made them!
jko3139 part 2, The other problem that arose from drinking Youngs was that nobody had it on tap and because you don't get the flavor drinking out a bottle, you had to pour it in a glass. The Young's bottle was too much for a pint glass but came about 3 fingers from rim of a 22oz glass. One day I got a wild hair and asked a bartender friend about pouring a shot in the glass, because it didn'tlook like a beer was supposed to look when it was served. She grabbed a bottle and went to the well.
jko3139part 3, When she returned it was like I was drinking a tootsie roll. I put the glass down and she looked at me and said "Kahlua". Nobody was looking so I let her take the glass and the next thing I knew we had a mini-fad. The 22-23 y/o girls now stayed after their sips and though their conversation was slightly lacking, they made up for it. So, If you decide to endulge be careful because it's easy to forget that there is a beer and a shot in every single one of those tootsie rolls.
Tried it an loved it on recent bus trip to Detroit. Drank it just below room temp in hotel room amazing stuff. I crack up when you always check for the smoke...
This beer really improves if it is warmer imo. I left it out for about 30-35 minutes and it was pretty good, but about 10-15 minutes into the beer, a whole new array of flavour came out, and it went from being good to being excellent.
@420inthe604 What a wonderful beer that is. Not always available up here in Canada (Gov't controlled alcohol sales) but great tasting beer. I also like St. Bernardus Christmas Ale.
@420inthe604 Hmmm I'm not sure about Vancouver but I live in Toronto, ON. All we have is the LCBO or The Beer Store to buy beer/alcohol from. It's sometimes available at LCBO. If it's not then usually other good Belgian beers are available there and they're equally as good as Westvleteren. Preety much all of them score 100 on the RateBeer site.
HEY BRO THERE IS A REAL STRONG CHOCOLATE FLAVOR IN THAY STOUT , A NICE MALT AROMA TOO , NICE VIDEO I AM FROM CHILE AND I HAVE MY OWN BREWERY SO IF YOU COME SOME DAY LET ME KNOW I AM SURE YOU WILL LOVE MY ALE

Yes I can and I prefer the bottle. It doesn't taste as watery. It is slightly more creamy in the can, but to me more watery also. Thanks for watching and tell a friend.

for what beer's I have had i compr it to guinness but it's better and different and there isn't chocolate to guinness might taste a little bitter burnt chocolate like a few sips but not much. this is the best balance of chocolate and this stout reviewed here is totally kick ass. drinking 1 now few weeks after my 1st one I tryed
hey joe have you ever tried fuller's london porter? I had it the other day and it's quite possibly the best tasting beer I have ever had. The after taste is of dark chocolate. AMAZING!!!
I live in colorado and the liquor store near me sells the bananna bread beer and is VERY good ! but normally Im a fan of the dark creamy stouts like stone bitter choc oatmeal stout, but was woundering if you or other viewers have any sugestions on a good thick dark creamy style beer with the roasted smell and taste to it with chocolate hints ? if you can get a hold of twisted pine espresso stout or cream style stout is great beer. the rouge choc stout is good too. thanks,, great review !
I think the temperature recommendation is given with the assumption that the beer is good, and that the flavours are worth experiencing. That being said man, keep it up - I love that you are bringing good beer to a lot of people and having a great time along the way.
I picked up a bottle the other day and am kind of wondering what glass would be best for this. You said you should have used a different glass, what kind would you have used?
I just ended up using my Guinness pint glass. But I was at the dollar store the other day and actually found that same glass. I like it, it's my third favorite glass right behind my Sam Adams and Guinness glasses.
But I think the specific beer I got was old or otherwise spoiled, because it tasted like shit. I got a little chocolate, but it was almost sour. I'm definitely going to try it again from a different store.
Very useful review man. Hey, I was wondering something. You've given this and the Sam Adams Chocolate Bock both "Two thumbs up". How do they compare if you recall?
Oh man, you've got me excited now - got some of this arriving tomorrow!
Just started watching your reviews. Great stuff man. Really fun to watch.
Hope all's good with you dude!

I live in colorado and the liquor store near me sells the bananna bread beer and is VERY good ! but normally Im a fan of the dark creamy stouts like stone bitter choc oatmeal stout, but was woundering if you or other viewers have any sugestions on a good thick dark creamy style beer with the roasted smell and taste to it with chocolate hints ? if you can get a hold of twisted pine espresso stout or cream style stout is great beer. the rouge choc stout is good too. thanks,, great review !

is this better than Sam Adams Chocolate Bock ?
Macktube 2 years ago
I wouldn't say that it is better. But it is more affordable and more available.

I think the temperature recommendation is given with the assumption that the beer is good, and that the flavours are worth experiencing. That being said man, keep it up - I love that you are bringing good beer to a lot of people and having a great time along the way.

If you can find it, buy and review a beer named GULDEN DRAAK, its PHENOMENAL.

Great review man keep them up.
I picked up a bottle the other day and am kind of wondering what glass would be best for this. You said you should have used a different glass, what kind would you have used?
metalkeith73 2 years ago
A pint glass is ok if that's what you have.
jjdaven 2 years ago
I just ended up using my Guinness pint glass. But I was at the dollar store the other day and actually found that same glass. I like it, it's my third favorite glass right behind my Sam Adams and Guinness glasses.
But I think the specific beer I got was old or otherwise spoiled, because it tasted like shit. I got a little chocolate, but it was almost sour. I'm definitely going to try it again from a different store.

The dollar store is great. I end up finding a ton of stuff there as well.

Very useful review man. Hey, I was wondering something. You've given this and the Sam Adams Chocolate Bock both "Two thumbs up". How do they compare if you recall?
JAldwin 2 years ago
While they are both very good. I think I would lean a little more towards the Young's. It's cheaper and easier to get.
