I want to inform you that as of the 16th of November 2010 a new documentary has been released with original combat footage from the 1st US Signal Corps about this subject (battle in the huertgen forest, battle of the bulge). The DVD can be ordered by the konejung foundation on their website (just google "konejung stiftung". It's in German and English and contains 4 hrs of never before seen footage from american archives...
I served in the 28th Inf in 1980 as PAARNG in the 103rd Medical Battalion. We used to talk about and honor the sacrifice of the buckets that served during WWI. Eventhough we served in peacetime much later, we were proud to wear the same keystone, HF is part of the lore that we inherited. Thank you on behalf of me and mine.
My Dad fought in this battle and was captured here. He spent 6 months as a POW afterwards. I visited this area in his memory last year. Beautiful and peaceful, hiked from Schmidt down to Vossenack and back again. What a place
Noticed you replied about three months ago. Anyway, much respect to your grandfather, even more so because he was involved in that fight. I could tell it was very brutal fighting there. Unfortunely, it was overshadowed by the Battle Of The Budge. I admit, i didn't know anything about it until I saw the movie ' When Truimpets fade"
a sorry general sent an american division to their deaths. there was so many wounded soldiers of both sides that they had a truce so they could help the wounded. then went back to killin each other.
I liked the view of the cemetery in this vid. It looks as if the graves are laid out in pairs. The one thing a soldier in any army depends on is his buddies and to be buried alone far from home would be a cold way to spend eternity, here they each have a comrade with them, side by side.
read the book by Charles Whitng called The Battle of Hurgen Forest...one of the best books I've read on WW2. Should do a movie on it...hey Tom Hanks, there's a movie for you to do, The Battle of the Hurgen Forest...Can I be your DOP if you do? LOL
Great video. I was in the Hurtgen Forest area a few weeks back. Didn't get a chance to walk to Kall Trail, but I did visit the Vossenack and Hurtgen cemeteries that you show in your video. I also recognise the memorial(2:49 mins in to video)to the 116th Panzer Division (Der Windhund). The whole area is so peaceful and quiet, it's hard to imagine what happened there in WW2.
I cant believe the US actually drove tanks down the Kall trail!

The anniversary of the Bulge is coming up again. I still remember how I felt. Scared, hungry, tired, and praying to survive. It was so cold. Gramps
