@sasook it's only an impression, you know.... his arm sweeps breathtakingly quick and so you get the feeling his eyes remain too much time in the same place..., that's the superslow motion camera doing its jobs... you may read an article call "Roger Federer as religious experience" where his author described the difference between what he call TV tennis and live tennis... it's a little bit disappointing, isn't it???
@ASTROxSniper1 i was eastern when i began and slowly switch to western... and went to extreme western... i am now back to an eastern. all i have to say is that it took 1 month of hard dedication and patience lol. this may sound silly, but take those squishy foam practice balls and do a lot mini tennis, then slowly move back to the baseline. i practiced a lot on the tennis wall to change my grip... balls flew everywhere, but now i am playing better than i have before. thats my only tip :P
OK, 'flick' is a wrong word I used perhaps. I meant to say the wrist 'pronation' plays a big part in the stroke. Ofcourse the forearm is a part of this natural motion and will pronate as well. But notice how he (or any modern player now) leads the ball with the butt of the racquet and just before contact the forearm-wrist pronate and play a huge part int he stroke. Puts nice topspin on the ball as well, puts action on the ball. Wrist pronation plays a huge part in the serve too.
@archetype001 The ball was probably struck slightly off the centre axis. Since the force on the racquet at the moment of impact was higher than 100 lbs....
@archetype001 That happens because Fedex loosens his grip just before he hits the ball. Fedex literally slaps the ball when hitting forehand or backhand. If you play tennis you'll understand that hitting the ball that hard with a tight grip will send it out. Key is to loosen the grip a little just before making contact, flicking your wrist and following through and getting that windshield wiper motion of racquet. Because of the loosening of the grip the racquet invariably turns a little.
@funguysmith fed doesnt flick his wrist, he pronates his forearm and wrist as one piece, check out this clip, search for roger federer warm up practice 1 of 4 and look at what he does at minute 2:15, he pronates his forearm and wrist, i dont think its a flick.
@archetype001 I am glad you notice this. Federer's racquet has an AGTS (auto grip twisting system) where upon impact, it changes the angle of the racquet face to ensure a proper two lane delivery path. Not many racquets are designed to do this but they are out there.
this music is perfect. and it looks like the ball is completely stationary prior to the moment of impact...as if it stopped moving on it's own i anticipation. hahahahaha
go to tennis magazines web site and search for "The Forehand of Roger Federer" by stan smith. Youtube blocks web links. Look and learn. Forward that article to the great Yandell lol.
What does Stan Smith know? He had a fault in his serving technique which caused him an injury! In a court of law not all witnesses are credible in establishing the facts of a case. Doesn't look like you're doing very well here!
Stan Smith from down the pub? .. after a few beers? Get with the modern era - if this is your only credibility, you're pathetic - one guy's opinion .. who played in the '70s. Try some up to date experts like FYB and Yandell - plenty of photographs can be studied on-line. You appear to know nothing about grip and stroke mechanics. Stan Smith had a glitch (technical error) in his service action which caused him an injury - so much for his expertise and understanding!
'snoble2k' is a bit of an idiot. His channel comments confirm this.
In this video as well as many others, Federer's choice of forehand grip is the modified Eastern. It cannot be the Western or full Western to execute this type of forehand. Stopping the clip at 0:38 shows clearly that Federer's palm is on the back of the handle, knuckles underneath towards the ground and thumb is clearly seen over the top front bevel. A Western would bring his palm underneath the handle, which clearly it isn't!
Thanks for calling me an idiot as you know nothing about Tennis. How many world ranked players have you played? I have played several before an injury and financial reasons took me out. That grip is a western grip, a eastern grip is the hand shake grip. As for Nadal and you confirm you know nothing because his his strategy stinks and that is why he need so much energy to stay with the point. There are two types of western grips, Semi and Full.
Nadal's strategy seems to be fine! At 23 having achieved 6 Grand Slam titles (including a Wimbledon win), achieving a world no.1 ranking; he became the first player to simultaneously hold Grand Slam titles on clay, grass, and hardcourt ... I'd say he's doing o.k. Maybe you should coach him on strategy - see if you get a paycheck!
Good point! Full Western grips can only be executed by contracting at the elbow and meeting the ball closer to the body to brush the racquet upwards - Federer is known to meet the ball further in front than any other player. The only grip that can facilitate this is the modified Eastern.
Dramatically? You cant be a pro, and definitely not #1 in the world, if you cant hit wide, high, or low balls. I think you would have a hard time finding a player who is able to hit wide, high, and low balls better than a normal one.
That just about covers every situation then! Federer has almost achieved every record going - he is again the no.1 player in the world - even his tennis playing opponents agree he could be the best player of the modern era. So if he has weaknesses, how is that relevant - who are you comparing him to?
It's "You" and it is a western grip. Yeah Federer looks great against baseliners but when he is challenged by changes in depth, placement and pace his game becomes unstable. He looks great against his opponents cause all they do is rally within his physical range.
Very few players take Federer out of his comfort zone - Nadal in 2008 Wimbledon Final really dominated the baseline rallys, but he had to use extraordinary topspin to pull Federer side to side. Roddick was playing extraordinarily well at this year's Wimbledon .. not dropping a service game until the very last! When Federer is on form - other players have to play at 100%. Nadal's performance has exacted a toll on his body - his superb fitness has outrun what his joints can cope with.
Federer's game is technically the closest that can be achieved to perfection - hence, he remains relatively injury free. His is the example to be set for future coaching. The two-handed backhand is actually a shortcut to success at Junior level and although it is used by more pro players in the top 10 in women's and men's tennis, it is basically a counterpunch shot. More can be achieved with the single-handed backhand for those with the patience to practise it.
Very few execute it correctly - Federer, Henin, Mauresmo, Gasquet, Sabatini, Graf are the greats.
By the way, in this video Federer is using the modified Eastern grip - no way can the forehand shown here be played with a Western or full Western. The Eastern is Federer's choice of grip so that he can meet the ball well out in front. Federer is able to generate higher racquet head speed than any other player on his forehand.
Players that use Western grips have to 'muscle' the ball to produce topspin and there is a compromise with forward velocity. Ever noticed how calm Federer appears towards the end of his matches - while his opponents are running out of steam?
You're a wally aren't you! There's an article on Safin and Connors gamestyles - both players are documented as using eastern forehand grip for the dominant hand. Connors is also reported as using the continental grip as he was a fairly flat hitter. One article shows that Chris Evert and Connors both used semi-western grips ..
You sound like one of those low class people who live in North London. Instead of talking Tennis, which you obviously do not know, you turn to calling names.
I live in Wimbledon mate ... in North London around Parliament Hill, Hampstead there are some pretty impressive properties with affluent people. You can't generalise any area in London - there are good and bad patches within a stone's throw of each other.
Affluent people and your not one of them for sure. I work for affluent people, many you know from music, movies and business and it means nothing to me. I know London I have many relatives in London. I have been there for business and have frequented the PC Show at Earls Court in the mid 80's. I played Tennis professionally have you? I was ranked were you?
Never heard of you - you mean absolutely nothing to anybody! Affluent people can have maids, servants, bell boys, butlers ... chauffeurs ... who cares if you're one of those? You seem to have an issue with status? *Snob*le2k ..? If you're associated with Amy Winehouse and other drugged up media moguls, who cares?
Is your real name Tony07UK? Of course you never heard of me why would I want you to? You now strike me as really stupid, learn to read. The topic is Federers grip and your wrong, it is a western forehand. Stick with the topic.
Before you carry on and make a complete fool of yourself, neither Connors nor Federer use Western grips. According to you everybody uses western grips! Do some research - Google Federer's forehand grip and learn something. Nobody here agrees with your postings - you look like a total moron. Stop embarrassing youself, it's getting so bad you're pathetic! All experts agree that Federer uses an eastern grip for his forehand and photo evidence shows this clearly. Take up bowls, darts or knitting.
It is a video bozo not a photo you are claiming as proof of a eastern forehand and you like your retard buddies are wrong. Learn some fundamental tennis before blabbing. Eastern grip dolt is known as the hand shake grip. If you shake some ones hand with the grip Federer is using then you should be in a Monty Python sketch playing an idiot.
Why don't you reference any article on the Internet (other than your own opinion) that actually states that Federer uses a western grip on his forehand? I would like to read it.
The fact that you mention so-called 'affluent ' people proves they mean nothing to you. What's so special about exhibitions at Earl's Court? Any member of the public can attend. Is you nickname Snobby?
I guess you are the one who is impressionable. I just mentioned it as to how familiar I am with england mister Thinskin. I use an eastern grip and Federers is no eastern grip.
So you know Earl's Court exhibition centre? Amazing! You have astounding knowledge of England! I went to Spain once and had a fantastic pizza in Madrid; I'm now an expert on this country.
The term 'modified' is used by the FYB analysis of grips because conventional tennis books don't mention it. Yandell has a good analysis of The Roger Federer Peculiarity (Tennis Grip) - you should get up to date and study more. You sound like a complete amateur out of your depth here.
Wrong again cause I use an eastern grip and that is no way an eastern grip so sell your childish bs else where. knuckles facing forward, oh sure thats a eastern grip lol. Easter forehand is the hand shake grip, thumb is at the eigth position on the octagon shaped grip which some call 10 O'clock. Learn some thing.
No need to search I can tell from the video it is a full western grip. They are wrong too if they call it an eastern grip because of his hand position. He leans back on high balls which is typical of of those using the western grip. I have seen them call a topspin serve a kick serve which is wrong so I don't doubt you and others getting the wrong information. Cheers.
I think it sounds more like a mysterious kind of movie. You know...like when somebody opens up a magical treasure box that they just found, and it's mysterious or something...you know?

Modified? Unsure? You seem unsure now. Call me an idiot lol.
snoble2k 2 years ago
The term 'modified' is used by the FYB analysis of grips because conventional tennis books don't mention it. Yandell has a good analysis of The Roger Federer Peculiarity (Tennis Grip) - you should get up to date and study more. You sound like a complete amateur out of your depth here.

u fail
fed has an eastern grip
PROTLxONgame 2 years ago 3
Wrong again cause I use an eastern grip and that is no way an eastern grip so sell your childish bs else where. knuckles facing forward, oh sure thats a eastern grip lol. Easter forehand is the hand shake grip, thumb is at the eigth position on the octagon shaped grip which some call 10 O'clock. Learn some thing.
snoble2k 2 years ago
search "roger federer's forehand grip" and watch the video by FYB2007, and you will know that you are wrong.
PROTLxONgame 2 years ago 3
No need to search I can tell from the video it is a full western grip. They are wrong too if they call it an eastern grip because of his hand position. He leans back on high balls which is typical of of those using the western grip. I have seen them call a topspin serve a kick serve which is wrong so I don't doubt you and others getting the wrong information. Cheers.

Federer is quite unique; graceful, smooth, calm, but yet considerably powerful and effective.
Federer is a perfect player.

I think it sounds more like a mysterious kind of movie. You know...like when somebody opens up a magical treasure box that they just found, and it's mysterious or something...you know?
