A.A.P. also acquired the 1933-'55 Popeye theatrical cartoon library from Paramount in 1956 (eventually adding the 1955-'57 cartoons after their theatrical engagements), eliminating the original Paramount titles with their own. This logo was seen on TV prints before several of the early Warner Bros. theatrical features.
I wish there was a better version of this...the beginning really blows it. I'd also love to see the color version as well. Yeah, Bongo Fury AAP. Accept no substitutes. I also would love to reanimate this so you would see the word "geek" as in Ms. Geek spelled out. I know someone who's a really awesome percussionist who would probably be able to do something even cooler than the bongo riff on here. If only I could find a Flash animator who could make my dreams come true...sigh...
This logo appeared before initial TV prints of several of Warner Bros. pre-1948 feature films (including "Footsteps in the Fog") when A.A.P. began syndiciating them in 1956.
Ya it scared the shit out of me too! when I was in bed at night and my dad had the black and white TV on with all the lights out. It was definitely the music I think and those splash symbols!...something was coming to get me! (Maybe Eddie Murphy's "Aunt Bunny"?
I LOVE THIS LOGO! That percussion is so cool, especially with the cymbal crashes for each letters' entrance. I used to see this at the beginning of an old WB movie (FOOTSTEPS IN THE FOG?) on TV.
I bet this opener came from one of the 50's feature movies mentioned on wikipedia's site about this distributer, which began in the the late 50's,and UA bought it out and later merged in to WB,some of the cartoons are now public domain. Thanks for this interesting logo!Brainman214
AS a little kid all kinds of things scared the b'jeesus outta me, but not this... I LOVED THIS!!! I can remember bein' like 4 yrs. old watching TV just waitin' for this to come on.
This logo is made of WIN. Bongo fury and really cheesy animation. Yeah, scary as all git out. Love it love it love it. Hated it when I was a little chibi-chibi. Love it now.
I too used to have nightmares from watching the AAP atom logo on then WNEW-TV/5's movie openings of Warner Bros.movies they showed! What's more Lewis B.Chesler later partnered with Brad Markowitz for HBO's"The Hitchiker"and David H.Perlmutter for"The Exile"and"Behind The Green Door"
The "Atomic" logo wasn't used on the cartoons they distributed, though.
Eliot Hyman started AAP with a shady Canadian named Lewis Chesler - they bought the Warner Bros. library (sound features and color cartoons made till 1948) and syndicated it to TV stations. Hyman sold AAP to United Artists, then started Seven Arts... which bought WB itself in 1966.
Then ... UA was merged into MGM in 1981, becoming MGM/UA, and Turner took that company over in 1985, but ultimately gave most of MGM/UA back to Kirk Kerkorian during 1986, although Turner did retain the AAP backlog of the Warner Bros. and Popeye shorts as well as all the MGM cartoons (Tom & Jerry, Droopy, etc.). Turner then merged with Time Warner in 1995, and this is why WB now utterly owns all of their old theatrical shorts.
WB holds the rights to the A.A.P properties today, however technically they are under the ownership of Turner with WB handling distribution and sales.
Wong rnigma. Ziv was acquired by UATV and became "Ziv-United Artists" in 1960. Only it was reverted back to UATV in 1962 after Ziv Television was phased out.
rnigma, I said UA acquired Ziv Television Programs to form "Ziv-United Artists". Ziv Television was phased out in 1962 and it was reverted back to "UATV". Ziv wasn't merged with UAA.
dispicable!

The music sort of recalls the 1973-90 CBS Special Presentation Bumper logo. I'm talking about the percussion backbeat.

This version was probably used only for feature films syndicated by AAP.

Exactly, although I don't know what the color version would look like.

Scary? It's cool!
(And wasn't there later a color version with the "a", "a" and "p" red, blue, and green respectively??)

I have never seen this before. I saw the other version that was on Popeye and Looy Tunes Cartoons.

So now there's an "Atom of Doom" logo. Never heard of this one, but it does look freaky.

I was also just a kid when this intro was shown on TV. It kinda scared me too, but in a rather fascinating kind of way.

@rnigma - After the AAP sale, UA turned it into United Artists Associated - UAA for short.

@wmbrown6 - yup, and UA then merged UAA with its other syndicator acquisition, Ziv, to form United Artists Television.
