  • bolton will be playing watford next season the way things are going.

  • We'd been slipping out of contention in February and March and looked set for no more than a top half finish, when we played that fiery "turning point" game against Tranmere at Vicarage Road at the beginning of April. From a goal down and heading nowhere, the hostilities in that match got everyone going and we came back to win 2-1. Then with a new-found togetherness they just kept winning: Birmingham away, Bolton and Palace at the Vic, and so on to ultimately displace Wolves from the play-offs.

  • What a great day, rather drunk out in N London to say the least by the end of it.

What were the mood and expectations of Bolton fans going into the game? You'd been up and down and up and (a bit unluckily I thought) down again in the seasons before it. How confident were you in the run-up?

I ask because Watford built up such momentum in the weeks leading up to it that we all seemed to believe we were going to do it. We were on the crest of this wave while Bolton appeared a bit subdued.

  • I was there, aged nine, best day of my life, watching this video still gives me goosebumps

  • great video,two great goals

  • was doyley at watford in 1999?

  • @whicker14 At the academy maybe, I think he signed pro forms in 2001.

  • I was like 11 and it was a hell of a day!! Second best day ever ( the 2006 promotion is the best) first time

Id ever been to wembley an it was amazing ill always remember wrighty and smart!!

  • What a day beats cardiff hands down best watford match of my life hopefully we can get wembley again someday

  • One of the greatest goals ever scored at Wembley that nobody ever talks about. If that overhead goal was scored by Rooney (not capable i might add), the world would still be hearing about it.Well done Watford

  • When I was at this game 8 years old, that over-head kick looked rubbish. On reflection, it is sickeningly brilliant

  • Graham Taylor, Greatest manager of all time ... by Miles!!!

  • Nick Wright from my home town Derby, we're still proud for him for scoring that classic over head scissor kick :~)

  • WATFORD TILL I DIE!!!!!

  • bolton didnt turn up that day. i remember sky hooked with elton john via satalite. when they won he looked mildly pleased, i was gutted, we went up via the play offs 2 years later.

  • this was my 3rd watford match id ever seen in person

what a match to go to :P

  • God we were shit that day! Sang our hearts out but came up short. Still, Cardiff '01 against PNE more than made up for it!!!

  • BOLTON SCUM

  • Tranmere eh? Ah, past memories, especially in 2000

All together now: "Aldridge, whats the score, Aldridge, Aldridge what the score!!!" (it was 3-0) & "Your not dancing anymore"

  • I never remember Bolton beating us, we always used to beat you in big games :D

  • You did at first, around 98-99 but that final season before we went up we did you twice in the league I think.

Still miss the heady days of playing Tranmere, The Wanderers/Wolves Derby, and being beaten EVERY year by Rodney Jack & Crewe!!!!

  • we are the one and only wanderers

    lets all shit on tranmere

  • yhea but who's in the premier league since 2001???

  • @papsou good shout. im a swindon fan :)

  • i remember that game. ALDRIDGE OUT! ALDRIDGE OUT!

  • what great memories, i never made it to that game but I did when we played le*%s. I've got a video on you tube about it

  • That was a good day, back when I used to go down Vicarage Road. Allan Smart's reaction says it all.

  • Atmosphere with watford fans was magnificent all day, hardly heard the bolton fans all day. We definately deserved the win and bossed the game apart from 10 mins i think.

  • what a great game. Nicky wrights goal was probably one of the best in aplay off final. Graham Taylor sure did 'Like that'LOL.

  • Who are commentating this game?

  • Alan Brazil and somebody Hawthorne, I videoed it even though I was there, hope that helps!

  • and why is there a tenpound fine for waving?

  • You dus Gudni Bergsson sing the National anthem? e's icealandic

  • I was there that day and watford deserved to go up

  • '.','.','.','.', Unlucky Bolton

  • Fuck off - i was there it was watford 2-0 bolton

    :'( CMON BOLTON

  • "Watford beat bolton 1 goal to 0, in the 1st division play-off final" commentator didnt know the score, lol

  • did i say that?....no

  • What did you say then..

That you dident want to win the play off final and gain promotion?

I really would like to hear the reasons for that!

  • Bolton never ever wanted to win that game every single bolton fans knows it FACT !!!

  • So you threw the game?!

  • @bwfc I'm not sure about that mate there weren't many in the Bolton end that day that looked like they were happy Watford won...

  • Yeessssssss, come on you hornets!!!!!!!

  • WOW Yellow army

i was 4 and it was amazing

    u ornnnnssssssssssssssssssss

    thnxs for putting this up

  • that game was amazing!! shame we lost though

  • My first-ever trip to Wembley was this. Thanks for ruining it, I'll NEVER forgive Watford for that day! But at the same time I'll never forget the outstanding atmosphere as the teams emerged from the tunnel. Never experienced a better one since.

  • But at the same time thanks for uploading, nice to remember where we came from and hope to god we aren't back there next season.

  • Perhap you wouldnt be so bitter if you had witnessed us applauding Bolton Supporters as they left Wembley?

Plus you won the play off final yourself a couple of seasons later and you have been in the top division ever since..dident turn out too bad did it?

  • Oh I know I'm only playing. I was 13 at the time and with it being my first final of any kind it was heartbreaking to lose it. We have always had some part to play in the playoffs, winners last time, semi finals in 2000, lost this in 1999, winners in 1995... Not as much as Ipswich though lol.

  • @stevohorn I was 12 and it was my first ever visit to Wembley, it wasn't a dig at Watford I'd never have forgiven anyone that beat us that day. We did have some titanic battles though between that season and the year we got promoted aswell, I'm sure Jaaskelainen still has nightmares about Tommy Mooney and Gifton Noel-Williams!

  • Yooooouu Orrrrnnns!!

  • Graham Taylor, come back to Watford!
