@IsanLife nothing wrong with washing them in a river or stream, that's how it used to be done over here in the u.s. before there were metal tubs or anything of the sort. they would used to beat them against rocks to get the dirt out. anyways, that what my grandma did when we didn't have anything like that.

@ylen13 she said you hand wash for clothes that are very dirty or delicate. Another ideal way to hand wash clothes is if they are colourful and will stain other clothes as a result of putting them in the washing machine.
