Thanks for asking. They didn't try to overthrow God but rather didn't want to choose the plan that would allow for our ability to choose right from wrong on earth. Lucifer wanted to do things his way, to have us come to earth but have us 'compelled' to do right, and he then wanted the glory of God in return, as it states in Revelation.
