  • derision of Psalm 40

  • Finally. The only version of Psalm 40 I want to hear.

  • @fathermulcahyisrad this is mockery of Psalm 40

  • @fathermulcahyisrad this is mockery of Psalm 40

  • I was there - what a memory.

  • @catjoyyoung I don't know you but I am extremely envious of the fact that you got to go to this concert!! I watched the VHS tape of this till it broke. Drove past Red Rocks on my way to Vail one year as well and thought of this show.

  • this song fits perfectly with themes of REM's album Automatic for thw people

  • i just got they letters you get before you can post a comment, but a friend told me not to go radge just take your time , love you

  • ❤♫•*❤♫•*❤♫•*❤The first u2 song i heard ! still fucking good ❤♫•*❤♫•*❤♫•*❤

  • Thank you my Christian brothers (U2) xxx

  • i wish that time come back...im so young in this time,,,im5 years old..im born in 1979...but this is u2 people,,the band change the world of music,,,but no im 32 years and u2 change ever,,,u2 u2 u2 not die

  • Psalms 98:8 Let the rivers clap their hands, let the mountains sing together for joy;~~U2 may not have been singing in spirit but the writer of this rock song had to be thinking of God, who is good. He loves us and helps us if we ask him to.

  • I wish i were alive back then, so i could have seen them in concert how they were. Now they rarely play their old beautiful classics such as this.

  • I'm surprised I like this song so much, considering I'm an atheist. Must be the groovy sweetness of it...

  • @wildsmiley i also am a unbeliever .but still enjoy music like this.

  • love the red rocks concert videos!

  • My friend posted Psalm 40 this morning..thanks for the reminder!

  • @Ghostdog357-Excellent-I had this video of red rocks back then and as ya do-loaned it out...Party Girl is awesome-The very best of u2 before Bono morphed into Ghandi/God/Geldof-Nice One :)

  • I Have this in VHS and i dont know why but the sound is very good!

  • Tis is the BEST Version of this Song! U2 4 EVER!

  • Psalm 40- my favorite.

  • Seattle... may 26 1983. fucking awesome

  • It was one of my greatest moments in life singing along with this live!!

  • Truly inspired, and like others, I was moved by this song as a teenager in the 80s, at a time when I knew nothing of the psalms. Still fantastic after all these years. I hope and pray that U2, and particularly Bono, will sse and hear this and be touched by the Living God who inspired this song all those years ago

  • I saw this show in 82 at the Aragon in Chicago. Unbelievable, they will never be that same band again. Sad.

  • saw them in toronto ?83. chorus (how long...) was still going strong on subway to outskirts of TO about an hour later. never forget being part of it. anyone else remember that?

  • Ive got the Red Rocks video

  • 666 likes! Btw, the Edge on bass = awesome

  • Adam on guitar!! unbelievable!!

  • A prime reason why I am much more impressed by rockers trying to be Christian, than I am by Christians trying to rock.

  • u2 perfect band.....this band makes my happy all days on my life...this is u2,,,,thanks too my llord,,,,like bono says,,,,u2 band...from portugal loves u2ever

  • @SuperPatricia88 i feel the same, from argentina

  • @rodrigoms2000 its beautifull see so many u2 fas talk on this youtube...thanks too you my friend..this is my drug...i cant not explain,,,u2 songs its on my blood...love u2 ever...portugal-argentina and the rest of u2 fas over this world

  • @SuperPatricia88 u2 changed my life and still does

  • I waited patiently.... Psalm 40... I will sing, sing a new song

  • I love this performance so much and this for me is the standout song although the whole set is fab. This is when they has passion and it shone through. I was so disappointed seeing them a few years later at wembley stadium on the Joshua Tree tour, seemed to be going through the motions then.

Agree this show was the pinnacle for me

  • I waited patiently for the Lord He inclined and heard my cry. He brought me right out of the pit, out of my miry clay. I will sing a new song, How long to sing this song? He set my feet upon a rock, and made my footsteps heard. Many will see, Many will see and fear. I will sing, sing a new song. How long to sing this song?
  • @travelswithdave it's "and made my footsteps FIRM" Just so you'll know : ). Great song! Love it!

  • Strange how live can be. In the Year of 1983 U2 group ask themselfs how long they could be doing a "new" song. Today, they are not the "new" they meant, and the songs are fullfilled of sugar, grabbing many ants. Will U2 back her style to Live at Red Rocks? Under a Blood Red Sky? Is it possible or not.?Of course they have a little fear of "new" songs and reach only the real U2's First Blood followers. NYSD, June, 11, 2011

  • @NewYearsDayUT The "new" in this song is different from what you're talking about. It has a different biblical meaning.

  • @NewYearsDayUT .. . . . U2 Had young and old singing praise and glory along with them and many had hands in the air "like they cared" in Minneapolis on 07/23. And I actually have been moved to join the ONE campaign and am encouraging my high school girls to get involved with Amnesty International. I saw this crew in 1985 in Munich and they made a huge difference in my life.

  • @NewYearsDayUT 26 years later, U2 has pulled me back. I WILL SING AN OLD SONG, one left by the wayside many years ago. And I will follow!! I will follow.. .. . .. .

There has never in the history of this earth been a band that has inspired so many people and made such a political and spiritual impact ! ! I would support this crew if they never put out another song or CD. As long as they continue to work for the rights of oppressed people in this world, I have their Back.

  • @PolishInMinneapolis we had our own red rocks in minn eh? i think bono wanted to sing bad and 40 but the band said, nah not tonite....grr

  • during my youthy days,, i nevery seen this on mtv but always had this on cass.. and during my young teens days i knew that is what i wanted to hear..

  • In 1988 they played a venue in TN that held about 11,000. One of, if not the smallest crowds they played for on that tour. The article in the next days paper summed it up as truly a religious experience.

  • I noticed The Edge is playing the bass and Adam Clayton is playing lead guitar. Nice!

  • Red Rocks... this will forever define U2.. regardless of what came before and after.... Red Rocks was to me their best moment.

  • @jeffscharpf Couldn't agree more...have thought the same thing before

  • @forthefaith2009 what??? there are plenty of real christians in this country. i'm not talking about the ones who use their bibles as a club and treat people horribly in the name of the lord. plenty of people do for others, because they are trying to show god's love on earth. just look a little harder and quit being so angry. peace.

  • I'll never forget when I saw this concert on MTV. When MTV used to be about music. I think it was back about 1984. Please correct me if I'm wrong. I've never been so moved when I heard this song. I was 25 yrs. old back then. I'm now 52 yrs. old and the song still moves me just like back then. Thank-you U2.

  • @joeyrocks2207 I feel the same as you and remember it well :)

  • @joeyrocks2207 yes, 1984. They only had 3 albums under their belt at this point but U2 was already enormous, or at least it seems so watching this.

  • Edge with a Bass !! lol

  • No, it's not UB40, you dick.

  • the same in Modena Italy 87,all people sang this beautifull song for 10 minutes!!!

  • perhaps the best concert i have ever experienced. it was transcendent.

  • Yeah man thanks for putting this up. This is by FAR the best version of the song out there. Props~

  • meow

  • @theonlytruepunk mate, are you some kind of fuckwit? It is not a religious song, but it is about religion. Anyway, all that's academic, it could be about Martians, VW Campervans or carrots, for all I give a shite. I still can't find my Live-Under A Blood Red Sky audio or video cassettes, arsehole! Only true punk, my jacksy!

  • Live...Under A Blood Red Sky; I had the cassette and the video. Where the fuck are they?

  • @mrcodhead67 This is a fucking religious song, why the fuck are you cussing?? Fuck!

  • Probably the best band in the world.

  • @THALIDO definitely u2 took over from where queen left off in terms of creativity and popularity

  • the song was sung for about an hour after u2 first concert in croke park m bright

  • this is on the red rocks dvd,, how is this rare?.. it was released on DVD hard to find you can find it in your local store or even ebay.. any where

  • This song is on my short list of favorites....

  • I enjoy it. Very mutch. I love it! Thank you

  • Buggered if i can work out adams chords on this one!

  • Rip the audio from this track at thetunify doht cohm.

  • Saw them in Pittsburgh during the 80s. The audience sang this into the parking lot of Mellon Arena. The song kept going as we drove away. As I got into bed that evening I could still hear the singing in my head......Amazing!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • @epicsuccess10 I was there too... Yes amazing

  • saw then in montreal in the mid 80's.....the entire audience sang this on the way out of the building and into the parking lot.....don't let cynicism rot your mind......art can change the world............

  • So funny to see Edge sporting the "Seattle" look with the flannel shirt. About 10 years before it became cool. ;)

  • This is a great song and performance. Still moves me after all these years. Unfortunately never heard them play it live

  • Lol, is it me ? At 0:15 Bono looks surprised by Adam's chord? After that, he looks to have thought it was good (it really was).

  • beautiful

  • 3:56 bono utilizes the ampitheatre effect... sweet!

on a quiet day u can whisper on the stage to someone at the top and they can hear you... such a wonderous place for such a beautiful song!

    thanks 4 posting :)

  • Five minutes and eighteen seconds?

  • adam clayton and the edge switch instruments... funny

  • Beautiful.

  • I saw the War tour back in 1982-3 in a venue that could barely hold 3000 people. Classic for a bunch of Irish Catholic boys from Dublin to close the show with the entire crowd signing Psalm 40. I was a God-less punk back then singing praises to the Lord with U2 leading the way and never knew it. Simply was and is brilliant.

  • @somethingslipped I saw the same tour in Boulder CO.

  • @somethingslipped I saw the same tour in Boulder CO. Fantastic!!

  • @somethingslipped They aren't Catholic. They were saved at an Assembly of God ten meeting at age 14.

  • This song is an amazing song. It really hits the heart. I loved hearing the crowds continue to sing this song. It makes me cry! I hate to see them leave, off stage. U2 is just an amazing band! They are my life band.

  • never say never

  • SING THIS SONG FOREVER!!!! luv this song! :D

  • Official Music- The House of David

  • A beautiful son for a beautiful scripture. Probably some of the best U2. Kinda gets you choked up.

LOL...I had to snicker at this, notice the stinker of a note Adam plays at :14 and how Bono shoots him a glare. Kinda funny.

  • LOL If this is rare video than you are not a U2 fan :D

  • "I waited patiently on the Lord. He set my feet upon a rock. I will sing, sing a new song."

  • I waited patiently for the Lord; And He inclined to me, And heard my cry. He also brought me up out of a horrible pit, Out of the miry clay, And set my feet upon a rock, And established my steps. He has put a new song in my mouth-- Praise to our God; Many will see it and fear, And will trust in the Lord. Ps 40:1-3

  • Why do you say it's a rare video? I have this show both on VHS and DVD so it can't be rare.

  • @bassi82

are you sure it is the same one? there are a lot of live versions of this song.

  • keeping on running after my dream..... Bono you are fantastic

  • I became a fan after seeing a bootleg copy of this concert. It reminded me of how much I used to love this band. Thanks for sharing this with us. : )

  • To have crowd beak into chant and give you back the energy you gave them is simply one of those moments no musician can prepare for.

  • To have crowd beak into chant and give you back the energy you gave them is simply one of those moments no musician can prepare for.

  • I was lucky enough to sit down and have a beer with the band in Tampa Fl. on their first tour into the States..Even before I saw them live I knew from the first time I heard their music that they would be big I had no idea they'd get to be as big as they are. I am still am in awe of how their music touches me and the world at large!

  • ha adam fucks up the harmonics at the start and bono just looks at him like "WTF" we just started the song

  • again!!! fully sweeeet 2 c teh edge on bass!!!!!

  • in my life i cant live without that band, from me u2 its the best of best band in world of all time,i respect all bands beatles etc but only u2 makes me happy.even im not nhappy im listen u2 and the day run betther,u2 portugal

  • @SuperPatricia88 collective soul just made me happy ... w/tears :D

  • OMG He´s so sweet.

  • "And this wise man asked me to stop. He said, Stop asking God to bless what you're doing. Get involved in what God is doing -- because it's already blessed." Bono Quotes

  • Wow...this is amazing..U2 strike me as guys who are on a journey like all of us...seeking God and truth.Plus, is that Adam Clayton playing lead guitar and the Edge on Bass...AWESOME!!

  • those were the days of music

  • When the audience sings it I get chills and tears in my eyes everytime I watch it. It's just amazing.

  • @AnimeGirl - I saw them at Madison Square Garden for The Unforgettable Fire tour and the same thing happened! You could hear it being sung on the way down to the subway, on the way out to the street. It was amazing.

  • who are the five Morons "disliked" this song?

  • damn, edge on bass and adam on guitar producing the same god like aural majesty.

  • AMEN BROTHER>

  • Sang this on the way out of Wembly June '87 on the Joshua Tree Tour. Also in '89 whilst waiting for Simple Minds - that must have really pee-d them off!

  • I have listened to the album hundreds of times, and never realized the Edge and Adam switched guitars for this one. Very cool!

  • Open your bibles to Psalm "40"

    This is a "gospel" song : )

  • @craigmacnaughton yup - few people seem to catch that and it's been right there the whole time.

  • @craigmacnaughton thanks for the knowledge. thanks.

  • @craigmacnaughton Most of their catalog is religious, but not in a beat you over the head way. Much of it just gets mistaken for love songs, which they rarely write..

  • @bockybalboa They are love songs...for the Lord!!!

  • @craigmacnaughton Well technically it is not a Gospel song. However it is, as it was written, a song of thanks to the one true God. A song about how God delivered David from trials and tribulations. David did not yet know the Messiah. He was still under the law and his relationship was quite different.

But an amazing song none-the-less. From an amazing show.

  • why was so adam looking so scared at 1:13

  • my parents went to that concert

  • I have this concert on DVD what an awesome show this was U2's best ever!

  • IN ONE WORD: MASTERPIECE!!!!!

  • awesome!!! an old friend of mine is in the front row there... sup drew?

  • fuck you

  • @fernajo09

yeah, fuck him. This song helps people see their similarities not differences. Fuck him.

  • I meant that it was the last song you asshole,

  • @pjb6996 Maybe if you had a better sense of getting your view across, people wouldn't think you were such a jerk. Think about it, douchebag.

  • @quantana927 its not rocket science pal. If your not intelligent enough to read between the lines then maybe you shouldn't post replies to comments.

  • @pjb6996 I guess I don't have my head as far up Bono's ass as you do to recognize this is their last song. You win. You are the ULTIMATE U2 FAN!!! You could probably tell all the world what they had for breakfast and what texture their shit is. You're very impressive with your knowledge of how their song list is. I'm sure that will get a fuckhead like you far in life. Never mind, you'd have to get a life first (outside of U2, that is...).

  • @quantana927 i reckon your head is firmly rammed up your own ass pal. just think before you post insulting comments in future.

  • it was always the last song you asshole

do I really need to spell it out for you ?

  • Had this album on cassette and literally listened to it so much the words on the outside wore completely off. Recorded June 5 1983.

  • divine performance

  • saw U2 on Joshua Tree tour in DC, we sang this song for 10min after the lights went up then again on the walk out. Unreal! best show EVER!!

  • We did too in Denver...all the way into the parking lot the crowd was still going.. That show was positively a spiritual experience.

  • @MrG8rmick Same in Houston, TX. Mass of people exiting the Summit like a wave over the hill all singing the refrain.......

  • I was there too! We sang it all the way to the metro...that was the show where Bono slipped on the rainy stage and dislocated his shoulder.

It really was an awesome show!

  • A trip to universe

  • @forthefaith2009 "most" Americans don't know John 3 :16 either. This is an AWESOME song taken from Psalms.

  • hate to hear this song ,the gig is over time to go home ,always want more

  • Gosto demais deste som!! Muito mesmo

  • Bloody awesome band! They really know how to bring out the spirit! Love ya boys!

  • anyone know where I can find the Paris version?

  • "Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me" was made for Batman Forever.

  • no shit sherlock

  • The U2 Praise the Lord!!!!

    Hallelujah!!!

  • IF you look up Psalm 40 in most Bibles. it is exactly or close to the lyrics...

    IME, the play this last...

  • OK you all know that "40" is Psalm from the Bible...

Every U2 concert I have ever been to.. they sing it... I guess it is like praying for them..

  • I forgot that the Edge and Adam Clayton swapped instruments for this song until watching this vid, which I haven't seen for probably 20 years. I wonder why the swapped.

  • I think they always switch instruments for this song. They did it in the Vertigo tour too. I'm not sure, but I think Edge wrote that bass part. That might be why.

  • The coolest was in DC at RFK stadium.. for the Joshua Tree... (another Biblical reference) as people were leaving the whole stadium was literally swaying as people chanted How looong to SIINg this So ong.. all the way out the cars.. Very moving.

  • were they trying to sing the song for a long time! very funny

  • Just great to hear again. U2 stills rocks.

  • I waited patiently for the Lord He inclined and heard my cry. He brought me right out of the pit, out of my miry clay. I will sing a new song, How long to sing this song? He set my feet upon a rock, and made my footsteps firm. Many will see, Many will see and hear. I will sing, sing a new song. How long to sing this song?
  • ...meow!............

  • As a dublin born jack they are truly the greatest rock band the last 30 years with the stones being a distant 2nd

  • this song always gives me the shivers

  • ok.. theres something that i learned today...the edge was playing bass!

wow, i did not know that..cool.

  • DREW!!! was that u @ 2:44?

    remember the boot buckle?

    columbine '86 forever man!!!

  • altho that would of been deer creek @ the time (:

  • Bono's voice is unbelievable here!!!

  • This song's name is "40" and if you want to know what the title means I refer you to Psalm 40.

  • .......meow.

  • I saw U2 in Pittsburgh during the 80s and they closed with this song. The crowd continued to sing "How long to sing this song" for about 20 minutes after the lights in
