@simionTheOne agree, i think it's their greatest album out of JD and NO. Not a very common point ofview but mine nevertheless. Sumner's lost and at times frail voice works perfectly.
New order are a band for all seasons, I feel movement era stuff is best to listen to in winter, PC&L in spring, Technique and Low Life in summer and Get ready and Brotherhood in autumn. Leaving out Republic and Waiting for the siren's call which i never really liked that much.
This song is FUCKING BADASS I mean Gillian is wicked struming that Guitar and the bass and the drumms i bet steven can kik that beat and then the mouth keyboard thingy thats awesome NEW ORDR was way ahead of their time
The beginning of something great. I love Movement because it's no longer Joy Division but not quite New Order. It just shows how the world's greatest band have evolved!
I love Movement; it's probably my second fav NO album (after PCL). It's still very post-punk, but a bit of electronica has crept in. I prefer Barney's singing on later albums.
@ord1711 Summer's vocals are somewhat cool. I like it. I love this album too mainly because it still remained influence by Ian Curtis and that unique sound of that post-punk era. Seem that they moved further away as years gone by from that "darker sound" of the likes in Joy Division's last two albums(Unknown Pleasures, Closer). Later became their own identity, great music and very successful moving on...
Unfortunately rather the end of something potentially great. I love this song and the album, but all other NO stuff coming afterwards is rather boring...
Bernie gets the lyrics wrong (again!) Should be "I saw some children dance I watched my life in a trance." But who cares. This is eerie and wierd and brilliant. Outside, here, there is the silence of the French countryside and somewhere the economy is collapsing. It's a strange day indeed.
He didn't get them wrong, he just changed them, this might have even been before movement was released so maybe these arse the original lyrics. Whatever it is, who cares it's his song he can do what he likes with it! Bernard changes the lyrics quite a lot anyway.
Perhaps. But the lyrics sound better the 'right' way round - yeah you're right - who cares. Have you seen them do 'Siren's Call' at , I think it was Reading, somewhere on youtube when he genuienly does totally fck up the lyrics and throws all the backing singers?! Background music to my life tho.....'arse the original lyrics' indeed! Have a good one.
This song speaks the harsh reality of everyday life. It's definitely one of the greatest songs of all time. It's a shame people these days don't recognize such mastery. Long live JD & NO!
I saw some children dance / I watched my life in a trance.
Movement starts brightly with "Dreams. ." I guess it's a tune they must have written before Ian did what he did. All the other songs are reactions to it. A bleak aftermath but a brilliant album.
I don't think Bernard is necessarily trying to imitate Ian as much as he was inspired by Ian's performing style. (If you were in a band with Ian Curtis, wouldn't that maybe rub off a little?) Personally, I dislike New Order after Blue Monday, because Bernard decided he could sing really good, and started singing in that awful, shrill, out of key, way too high-pitched way. They would be alot better if he just stayed in his range.
Truth is, Movement is the most important album New Order ever made. It's by far their best, taken as a whole. Not a bad song on it. The live shows don't do the album justice. It's the most important, in my opinion, because it helped them deal with Ian's suicide. Movement helped them, and their fans, honor and say goodbye to Ian. So they could move on. I'm sure it was therapy. I know I would have felt sad, angry and betrayed if my best friend committed suicide. Rest in peace, Ian.
Funny, I think exactly the opposite: the album doesn't do the songs justice. Martin Hannett crushed the life out of Movement with a suffocating production that made the band sound like it was playing under a glass dome. These live tracks give the songs the energy and spark they were missing- like the guy below me, I wish they'd remaster the album.
I agree completely. Movement is the only NO release I still listen to. It's too bad it has been dismissed by so many including New Order. It's a great transitional recording between JD and NO and retains some of the original JO sounds. Even Barney attempts to sing in much lower octaves imitating Ian's voice.
ANY monkey can hear the beautiful sounds that led to Confusion, BLT, True Faith, Temptation etc etc
We all lived through it and by god it is still damned good. Remember Joy Division, Remember Kraftwerk, Remember David Bowie, and then think of the Killers, Artic Monkeys and Kasier Chiefs amongst many others ....... It's all good stuff - no bum notes in it!
This shit was definitely avant-garde in early 80's. I was not able to check out Movement (which I will now) since hard to get. I am tired of hardcore Joy Division/Ian fans who constantly criticize New Order & Bernard in comparison to Ian. Although Ian was charismatic & unique as a frontman, he's bloody dead. New Order & Bernard marched on...to the sound of differing beats.
Thank you adz1962 for posting this. Amazing. Nice guitar work at the end. Movement is still my favorite NO release. Difficult at first, but it stands the test of time. Alas, what could have been if they would have continued in this direction? At least we have excellent aural documents such as this and good people like you who post them. Thanks again!
New Order didn't continue because at the time, the critics from both fans and media were not kind to Movement. To this day, it is still considered as one of the band's worst albums, if not the worst; they were accused of riding on their past. It must have affected them because they later took another direction.
So bloody dark...Ian's spirit can be felt.
