If you look back through the older comments on this video, we already explained that the doors *were* slow, but the company that installed them has since replaced all of the motors, belts and pulleys and made them a lot faster now. Thanks for the comment, though!
The Mount Union Fire Company and Ambulance Service responds to 1,000 - 1,200 calls per year, and is getting busier each year. The bulk of the calls are EMS, however, we handle over 200 Fire Calls each year.
No, it's definitely a Fedelcode. I live about a half hour from Mount Union, and I took a drive the one day to go see it. It resembles two Model 5/7s stacked on top of each other. I heard it activate while I was at a gas station a few miles away, and for some reason, I remember it being slightly higher pitched, like it had 8 ports, but I may be mistaken.
All I know is that it is definitely part of the Federal Signal family tree.
No... they were extremely slow, and we have since resolved that issue - the company that installed them came back and put all new motors and parts in and they are 3x faster now!
Yes... they were that slow when we first got them, but the company came back and replaced the motors, the pulleys, and the electronics and now they are a lot faster!
Great vid!But why piss off the whole neighbourhood with the siren, surely you can afford a pager system, your the land of the free and the home of the brave!!
Thanks for the comments! In fact, the community as a whole is very supportive of our fire company. While we do have a pager system in place (hence, the tones and radio dispatch that can be heard at the beginning of the vid) we do have members still that rely on the "whistle" to know there is a call. Not to mention good ole' fashioned "tradition"! :-)
It's best to have two separate systems in case one fails. If the pagers fail, the siren is still there to call out the firefighters. If the siren fails, the pagers can call out the firefighters.
For a Volunteer fire department that was a good respond time. and the ambulance is a good thing always nice to have one there just in case. i start class to become and EMT hopefully jan. cant wait to join the family of Firefighters and EMTS. again good respond time.
I was very curious as to what this siren sounded like. I live in Altoona, and have passed through Mount Union specifically to find this siren. I would have assumed it was dual tone.
Which Siren are you referring to? Do you mean the house siren, or the sirens on the apparatus? The Quint uses a Federal Q and Whelen electronic siren. The ambulances have dual tone electric sirens on board...
Thanks for the comment, if you'd like any other information just ask!
Keep in mind that we are a completely volunteer fire department, where the volunteers wear pagers and have to respond to the fire station, dress, and then roll on the call... We actually have one of the quicker responses of the departments in the area... Thanks for the comment, though! :-)
We respond an ambulance on ALL fire calls - more so to provide service to firefighters including rehab (I know, there's not much "rehab" at a chimney fire), support, and God forbid a f/f get injured the ambulance is already there. Not to mention our ambulance crews are usually made up of firefighters also - so it's additional manpower at the scene. Thanks for the comment...
Sorry... forgot to hit the "approve" button! My bad. Thanks again for the comment. I work as a police officer across the street from the Fire Hall, so I was able to get the whole call - hence the walking part (sorry about that!)

It is a Fedelcode siren. I found a hi-res picture of it on the siren archive.

I found a photo of this siren on the town's website. It looks like a two tier FedelCode, but I'm not sure...

I love the fire siren! How many calls a year does this fire dept. respond to?

That looks more like a SoundMaster 115 to me. Look carefully at 0:42.

or it could be a thunderbolt 1000 low tone

Its a soundmaster 115...

I don't think it is. It looks too much like one of the rare dual-chopper Fedelcodes, especially from the picture on the Siren Archive.

Usually if a firefighter gets hurt, someone has smoke innhalation, or somebody is hurt at the scene.

When the doors go up its like a part in a movie when the director wants to make a character make a slow entrance. LOL

Could the bay doors open any slower?!

No... they were extremely slow, and we have since resolved that issue - the company that installed them came back and put all new motors and parts in and they are 3x faster now!
co7rescuediver 3 years ago
Cool!! Heck you could press the button to open the doors and then get you gear on and be in the truck and the doors still would be going up.
FOGBIT44 3 years ago
And were they that slow when you first got them?
