  • Lekhayim!

  • so when is he gonna start screaming like a dying kitten?

  • "Kraftwerk sucks" ?!?!?Kraftwerk is one of the best Bands in our era !!!!

  • which album is this from?

  • LOL, "poophat". Whatta name.

  • @laertes160 Like Robert Rodriguez's Chingon? Come on! You can hate Zorn, but maybe is better to do it in silence.

  • @trickynhf1

Better? How so? Only approval may be expressed? Zorn's musical inclinations are noted: "And it's a really crazy piece, with the guys screaming and hooting, something that attracted me. " (Wiki)

I am not attracted to screaming and hooting, however, and perfectly content to leave Zorn to his adorers.

  • @laertes160

sick man thanks for the great input!

  • art in perfection

  • wàhnsinn_súcht_mál_Ñâch:_geldeasy_âuf_gÔÒglè

  • All I can think of is The Dead Kennedys when I listen to this.

  • From Boredoms playlist HERE AGAIN??? AAA!!

  • Na dwójce leciały kiedyś takie rzeczy!? Chyba urodziłem się jakieś 10 lat za późno

  • @Morill8814 dobre co?

  • thanks to whoever put this on the sun ra playlist...! zorn = dope!

  • The bass player here is great. What a bassline!

  • nice! very nice!!!

  • je ne m'en lasserais jamais, fantastique!

  • This is really really lovely. I'm more used to the more aggressive collabs that Zorn has been involved in so this was a great break from that.

This might be a totally percussion 101 question but what is the instrument that the percussionist is using? It sounds similar to Zydeco washboard but is much softer and I'm not familiar with it.

  • @exquisiteoath: That my friend is a merengue guiro.

  • @BGruber42 Thank you!

  • @exquisiteoath It is a Merengue Guiro my friend.

  • @exquisiteoath a guiro.its used mostly in merengue,a style of music that originates in the dominican republic.its originally made of a gourd but the one you see might be made of aluminum.

  • I discovered John Zorn today and this is the first song i've heard. I have to say I am really ipressed! this bass line is just so huge and strangly sexy. I see there is a lot of this stuff so that should keep me occupied for a good while. Happy days :-)

  • gigaante!!!

  • the small percussion kicks it!

the congo player is so good

  • Mark Ribot is a god at guitar.

  • night in tunisia - dizzy gillespie

  • Might be the sexiest bassline of all time.

  • @BIBBIBBIBBIB It is pretty sexy but I am gonna have to agree with Smider on this one.

  • 2:59 monobrow.

  • mmm warsaw summer jazz days ...1999.

  • It must be in the 90's because our polish television station no.2 has got an old logo sign... My bet is that it's somewhere beetwen 1991 - 1995

  • When was this performed? Marc Ribot looks so different now.

  • his grindcore stuff is awsome =))

  • GO AUSTRALIA!!

  • Dear John Zorn,

please do a tour in Australia, Sydney. "The Basement" or "The opera house", there is a growing fan base here but we dont get great player from the USA often. i hope one of john zorns friends read this and email or tell him. i will read the paper and keep an eye out for your arrival.

  • Just discovered John Zorn about three minutes ago. I'm obsessed already! I feel as thought I've been searching for his music all my life and I've finally found it!

  • They call loads of things fusion nowadays, but this is true fusion. Simply unique.

  • good'

  • what year is this??

  • As they write on T-shirts, I made a Google search for "kraftwerk sucks". and all I've got is the info about some Zorn, next step I'm here, and now WOOOOOW.

  • @brbrbr1 Except Kraftwerk owns

  • The more I listen to the Book of Angels material the more I love it.

  • I liek this guy, it makes me feel hip with ma homiez! this guy is tha real gangsta

  • On which album is this song being released ??

  • @IMBACHABRI naked city

  • @kriztianrulez Its not on any Naked City album and this isn't Naked City. (Technically)

  • @IMBACHABRI Bar Kokhba.

  • I love how some people will say a well made piece of music, with great playing is self indulgant and masturbatory, when they don't realize that both sides can be good. You don't need to be shitty with your instruments to make great sounds.

  • Naked City band is better

  • @disdain666666

i say the two bands haver wotrg style diferences...

    you cant comparem them.

but Naked City is cool too. =)

  • Ahir Bhairav or Dominant Phrygian Starts by the Guitarist at 1:02

  • This is Music i would Love to play with ~

  • This makes me want to be Jewish.

  • @GrainBeltBeer why? this is not jewish music

  • @kriztianrulez It's called Gevurah.

  • Yeah man

  • Wow, this is self-indulgent garbage compared to in my own greed by spawn of possession.

  • that percussion guy is groovy as tits.

  • @myqueaf you should see the guy playing with dave holland. man, when you see him drumming you get the feeling that he was fed liquefied groove when he was little.

  • He´s awesome... No words to say...

  • I think it's great that John Zorn can do such coherent and beautifully orchestrated compositions like this, but is also known for the extremely noisy and chaotic work of Naked City.

  • @JimShoes1 Your reply, and more largely your opinion, carry no weight if you can't provide anyone with any suggestion for music that is in the same vein as Zorn's. Which real composers? (Found Zorn through prog archives myself--think it can be pleasing music sometimes, but I wouldn't collect his albums as they seem to get a bit repetitive...)

  • @JimShoes1 Your giving me the impression that jewish musicians don't play the best music...or none at all.

  • @JimShoes1 ...Good artists copy, great artists steal. Pablo Picasso.

  • no blacks musicians?

  • So, someone who enjoys listening to that kind of music is a hipster, right? It's not that I don't like it, I was just lead here by searching for the meaning of the word, and then checking how does exactly modern jazz sound.

  • this is commercial bullshit Rabbi Zorn...mediocre bar mitzvah crap...overrated hype for naive snobs.

  • @JimShoes1: In all seriousness, what would you suggest then? Or was that commment merely anti-Semitic?

  • @JimShoes1 It must be for assholes too because I'm an asshole and I like it.

  • this music is so nice to play ...

arrangements of Filmworks are played on my channel ...

  • fuck, this is wonderful huh!? i hope to be playing with a group this good at some point in my life

  • That was really nice, man...

  • yes... shhhhh!!!!

  • shhhh...

i wanna listen to this ;)

  • Last time I saw Marc Ribot he was a lot older than this

  • it's from polish public tv. But it was long time ago today we have pop shit ini tv too:(

  • i feel like i'm in a spaghetti western. why doesn't Quentin Tarantino use this in his next movie?

  • If you like the "spaghetti western" flavor of this piece, you might want to check out Zorn's "The Big Gundown" disc -- it's all reinterpretations of the music of Ennio Morricone, who was the king of spaghetti western composers.

  • cool thanks I hadn't heard of that album

and your right, Morricone is the king of spaghetti western music

  • Id like thankin david, sarangistratergy, sharin music this sweet.....

  • i think this may be used in fortysomething (show written directed and starring hugh laurie) or it is a peice really similar!

  • How about secret Chiefs 3? with their Xaphan album!

    !

  • Who plays similar music like zorn?

  • @MapachewithSniper

Mr. Bungle. He's got the same cartoon-y kind of feel and random breaks where the music goes crazy.

  • I know Mr. Bungle. Do you know other bands?, I think in the line of Peter Brotzman.

  • vinicio capossela(italian singers)

  • great guitar sound! what does ribot play? is it the epiphone casino?

  • "Mainstream is, generally, the common current of thought of the majority" (wiki). So, if majority of people from some social group listens to John Zorn, he'll become mainstream composer for that social group. Mainstream and music quality are not directly linked.

  • if you don't mind I will call it

    NEO-KLEIZMER

  • fantastic

  • just great!!

  • I'm on Deadbeans' side. Most mainstream music IS badly made. But then I also disagree, because there is a lot of good bands out there still making amazing music to this day.. you just need to know where to look. Not all new music is bad.

  • @numbereft, I think the problem is that more people than ever are making music now, so there's more bullshit one has to wade through, before finding something of substance. Additionally, the overuse of predictable chord progressions has prevented most pop music from doing anything truly creative in the last several decades.

  • @numbereft

    TRUE

  • @numbereft since when does "mainstream" mean "new"?

  • @numbereft Truer words have not been said.

  • Anybody know if John Zorn is planning to "gig" in the UK anytime soon?

  • Perfect, very good sound!

What's the name of the project/band?

  • the Bar Kokhba sextet...

  • Ugh, listen to the radio for a day and the main stations, then come home get on here and pull up this video and its like "ahhhh". Like a vice grip has been removed from your head; fuck this is good music.

  • @Deadbeans What's up with people hating the mainstream music, like it's terrible? I like saying you "hate" something when you just dislike it. It's cool to say you don't like it, but to put it down and say it's bad, that's just wrong.

  • Because new music is so aggrivating. It is BAD music, thats the point. It gives me a headache and is all processed with the touch of a button. It's not often you listen to music today and hear each piece of music within a whole body of work. You can hear Zorn's work in this music. When I hear "Shut up and Drive" by rhianna, I hear the riff from New order's "Blue Monday" and a processor making music for her, oh and don't forget autotune. Today's music has no merrit, no integrity.

  • @Deadbeans Does it really matter how much "skill" goes into the music? If it sounds good, who gives a shit what work goes into it? And saying "it's BAD music" is an opinion, not a fact. Don't put others down because their opinions are different.

  • that maybe true, but music that isn't only good but has also had a tremendous amount of thought put into it i think is more satisfying than music that is instantly accessible and instantly gratifying. this might sound cliche, but its the music that "grows on you" the more you listen to it that is the most gratifying type of music, in my opinion.

  • @begily Well, yes, it is better. But if you can dig the sound, then in my opinion, the amount of thought doesn't matter. But hey, that's just me. Deadbeans and I can agree to disagree.

  • @begily it's called acquired taste:)

  • maybe you should look beyond mainstream music. also, new order used sequencers which doesn't take any "musical skill" either, rendering your argument invalid.

  • That so true, man! You speak the words of truth!

  • I totally love Mark Ribot. "fuck identity" best quote ever.

  • come accade spesso coi masada di john zorn, la musica "si fa ascoltare" da sola, si muove autonomamente e quando meno te lo aspetti ti è già dentro... :)

As often as it happens with john zorn's masada, the music itself "makes listen at" it: it moves in complete authonomy, and penetrate inside you without even you notice that.

  • Very nice!

  • Fantastico!, esos son musicos joder!

  • the bit that starts at 2:55 is just wonderful. amazing.

  • Nice!

  • Anyone seen him perform or have clips of Kedushah, Seraim, Sansanah, the lot, performed live? Share! Thanks.

  • what kind of drums is Joey Baron playing, because I want drums like that?

  • you're close minded crap =)

  • True.

  • I found John Zorn recently and have become somewhat obsessed... This guy is amazing...

  • If you had to search the man's name to find this video in the first place, the fuck you care if he is sitting on stage with the guys playing it? you just sound jealous that no one is searching youtube for videos of you sitting around watching people play your music.

  • I think this crolongardi is right in a way, prety arrogant of zorn to sit on stage all the time.

But, when a playing a solo on any groove is awesome and yet hard to take a listen to the music being made at the moment.

Therefore it could be very usefull to have a conducter on stage and listen to piece as a whole instead of focusing on a solo.

So we have to agree he's making a diffrence sitting there and conducting more or less, wheter 'you' like it or not.

  • crolonganardi, John Zorn is a conductor also, not only a composer, that's why he's sitting on a stage while his musicians are playing

  • Very interesting ! cool vid !

  • Stop talking shit Crolonganardi, it s not about u, it s about the music, listen and try to feel it u dick.

  • do you know who that "composer" is?

  • Wooow!

  • Gods on stage.

  • Groovy

  • What does John Zorn say in the very beginning? ~ 0:09

  • Great song!

  • When the strings come in arco in 2:33: YES

  • tssss que rifados!

  • is this Masada or just John Zorn performing with invited musitians?

P.D: I forgot how to spell "Musitians" xD

  • All musicians have been involved in Masada Project.

You have ao: the Quartet, the Masada String Trio, the Masada Chamber Ensembles and the Electric Masada Octet

  • oh ok, thanks for the answer =)

  • this is Bar Kokhba.

Zorn found a way to make his music even better.... not to actually play his own compositions.

  • Wow, this is the first time I've ever heard John Zorn's music. This is fantastic. Can anyone tell me a good album to start with?

  • Naked City, Bar Kakhba, and filmworks X: in the mirror of the maya Deren, are my favorites

  • i like Torture Garden with his Naked City project. way different but you should check it out. Masada One is good too. That's more similar to this.

  • Yeah, Naked City is awesome.

    This is also really good.

  • And the Grammy goes to...Beyonce....ugh.

  • hahaha.

  • amazing!bravo.

  • DE LO MEJOR QUE HE ESCUCHADO

  • some sephardic surf...

  • Very good music

  • zorn is real master, very talented person!!

  • Jesus, this is absolutely insane. Really, I think this is one my favorite guitar performances, it has actually influenced my playing very much, since as I am a beginner every single display of amazing skill and feeling can be counted as an influence. Friedlander's solo is also really, really awesome. What a killer performance.

  • I agree, but the first word to your comment really threw me off.

  • Amazing really good musichians

  • WOW! i'm coming from listenting to pop/rap/rock to his true art form!

  • perfect...

  • thanks
