  • Goodness Tam, it all looks delicious! The hash browns eggs and biscuits make me anxious for breakfast. My mother goes all out a few times a year on breakfast and this reminds me of last years Christmas breakfast. :) Happy Holidays

P.S. I'm going to go out to the woods with my buddy and I JUST decided this is what we're having for breakfast. :P

  • Sorry, that's supposed to be BAKED enamel. Ooopps. :)

  • My favorite (and my mom's) was always a cast iron skillet. I've got a small one that I keep on using for just about everything. They're now saying after much research that it is healthier to cook with cast iron than aluminum or stainless. The only other one that is as good as the iron is the backed enamel, but those are too expensive and too heavy. :D Thanks for MORE great stuff. Much love and blessings to you and hubby.

  • awesome Tam... i didnt know you guys were Jewish. we make and eat Latkes on Hanuka though.....LOL.

    survival Latkes.

  • I love ur videos...I am inspired by its simplicity...These recipes remind me of some things my mom used to do when we had to make what little food we had stretch....As has been said on ur videos, survival isn't limited to the bush...Keep it up and looking forward to the cookbook

  • @lisag65256 Thank you so much! Life used to be so simple, and it's not hard to find that back again, such a more blessed way of life!

    Blessings to you and yours,

    Tam

  • Great Job Tam!

  • Love it . . . . Great video.

  • another great vid! a lot of people I know think as long as you build shelter and make a fire you can survive anywhere.... but if you cant cook, then your going to suffer in the long term! keep up the great work

  • @nightdweller2004 So true! Thank you so much for the encouragement

  • omg you made a smiley face :-)

  • i would love to see some videos on how you pickled those greens

  • Nicely done and very worthwhile watching. Good job as usual Tam thank you.

  • cooking outside is the best

  • Great reminder/ideas

    Thanks.

  • Im getting hungry watching this, it seems very cheap but looks very filling great stuff

  • Great video Tam. Got to try it!

  • I'm hungry.

  • potato flakes are awesome, cause thats just how good the potato is.

its a starch, it can be cooked, or preserved in almost any way. not imposible to grow, and goes with everything

I think alot of people cook on too high of heat

  • Awsome! This is exactly the videos my no camp cookin butt needs. Great job, Tam.

  • Great video! Potato flakes are under rated. I always buy them when they are on sale, I vacuum seal them in bags. I also use them in many things like you do Tam. One thing I use them a lot in is as a binder for my meat loaf. They make a fantastic and quick potato and corn chowder too.

Your biscuits look wonderful! I'm going to try that recipe. Thanks for sharing!

God Bless you and your family.

  • mm my previous post just vanished pff.. Anyway another delicious potato-recepy is the swedisch raggmunk; use a grater to make potato-strips, mix em to some flour, an egg and a bit of salt.. then shape 4inch wide, half inch thick pancakes and fry em with lots of oil...Sprinkle with brownsugar when cooling and serve with apple sauce... mmmm

  • Wow I like them that way too :) Once while eating pancakes with eggs and hashbrowns, my syrup got onto my eggs and hashbrowns. I actually enjoyed it! We call those hash brown patties here. They also taste great with sour cream and chives.

  • How come your eggs don't stick to your pan? My eggs always stick and break when I try to flip them.

  • Is your pan too hot? Do you keep your skillets oiled? You are welcome to eat eggs here, I'll be happy to cook them up :)

  • Your the best!! I'm sure the wife and I would gratefully take you up on that offer if you folks weren't multiple hours away. I'll watch the heat. Thanks.

  • this video is very educational ! thank you ! I am so happy to see what mashpotatoes can become after a few swirls with diferent things . Thank You !

  • yummm I LOVE potato cakes! Especially with onions and cheese in the mis :D Thanks for sharing sissy!!!! Yah blessssss~

  • I cooked this up this morning for breakfast on my kitchen stove for the practice. The potatoes are wonderful. My 1st batch I think were a little to wet, but I got my 2nd batch just right I think. Thanks Tam for more great cooking ideas. I live in Florida so this stuff might come in handy, not only for camping/backpacking, but also for hurricane season. MMMM,,GOOD. LOL,,,LOL.

  • I love my cast iron also, I'm ready to eat the eggs and biscuits and hash browns. But the greens should be illegal and only fed to prisoners,,, YUUUCCCKKK, LOL,,,LOL.

  • Great video.

  • Well, your cast iron looks great. Thanks for the tip. Great stuff.

  • Great vid Tam as always. Did you say you cleaned the cast iron with salt and what else?...

  • Hi Pappyhighlife,

I use salt and oil, the salt works wonders as a scouring agent. Just a tiny bit of oil, as much salt as you desire. Once clean wipe out, and add a lil bit of oil to coat it before putting it away. It won't rust when you keep it oiled.

  • Thx Tam;)

u r a blessing in a world where vids say buy silver & get gold - you sho how grand parents did survive gr8 depression of 30s except they did not have boxed potatoes ! heheh

i really wonder how many 'americans' even have that precious cast iron skillet !

  • ((Gr8wg))

My dad grew enough potatoes to feed an army lol. I much prefer fresh potatoes, but understand that should one want to pack out, the flakes are much lighter ;)

I love my cast iron! Can't have too much of it, and prayerfully I'll always be able to have it with me.

    blessings,

    Tam

  • I love frying eggs in my bacon grease when I go camping. mmm

  • Thanks Tam for another great campfire cooking video.

  • thanks tam, great idea! toss some chicken boullion (or a jalapeno) in there and they are instantly delicious! I take potato flakes with me every time i go on a trek or camping.

  • This is wonderful, all of this looks so very good! I have a funny feeling that I will be out back with my wife tonight cooking at our fire pit. Tam you always show the best stuff for outdoor cooking! I may have to swap some recipes with you some day. This is a 5 star video and placed in my favorites!

  • After watching the first vid, I made a batch of biscuits, their in the oven as I type!! I am using bacon grease for my gravy!! mmm, thanks Tam, they smell GOOD!!

  • Thanks Dave and Tam. Cooking is somthing people have a hard time with in the bush. Thanks for showing

  • Fantastic! Now I'm hungry. Great vid. I'm always amazed at what u create in what most consider very primitive conditions.

I think I'll drag out my cast iron griddle.

  • ***** Haute Cuisine *****

    looks very nice .... !!!

When i`m on tour normally i have 1 or 2 kg of fresh potatos with me. Next time (in october) i`ll

use potato flakes. I`m excited about my results ... :o)

Greetings to David and best wishes to all of you !

    Jan,Jakob,Nadja & Finja

  • yummyness 5*

  • Another great video Tam. My dad fries the mashed potato and adds onion and puts on a slice of cheese when plating. Looks like a good breakfast for Dave

  • Tam and I definitely feasted after the video Darrel! We ate so well that neither of us was hungry at dinner time 3 hours later.. LOL!

  • Tam them look real good, what you can also do is mix your dough like you did,but add some salt, and pepper, then make your patties leave them whole, and we call them tatar cakes down south

  • Great idea quartermain, that is what I normally do, but since a viewer asked for hashbrowns in cast iron, I did it this way for him :)

For myself I normally add onions and even garlic, and like darrel suggested, some cheese, then a huge dollop of sour cream with chives! Yumm :)

  • That Cast iron pan is beautiful! Tam sure takes good care of it... definitely the sign of a great cook!

  • Love the idea about biscuits they looked great. Instead of hash browns I would of put onion in them and made potato pancakes served them with some chunky homemade apple sauce. Well made my self hungry go to go to the pantry now. You guys rock. Another BIG HUG for dad God be with you all.

  • I like to add a little flour and egg to mine. They hold together better that way. Yummy they look really good

  • Tam rocks!

  • That so reminds me of the way my grandmother made uses of every thing. left over mashed potato became a treat, just add cheese, and love. great video, thanks for posting.

  • I've used instant mashed taters before when i make soup as a thickener this video made me hungry too LOL

  • Great video. I had no idea of the versatility of potato flakes. I am so hungry right now!

  • Great ideas with the potato flakes. I love "real" potato . At home I would not have potato flakes but they are great on the trail. A friend of mine puts them in his ramen noodles...sounds weird till you try it...awesome taste. I enjoy your recipes and will try them out on the trail soon.

    Take care,

    Bluefin

  • never thought about this rate how it taste on the 1 to 10 I got to try this, I have put in a egg, and frozen veg's lot of ways to use ramen noodles.

  • About an 8...Depends on how far in the woods you are. It gives the noodles a soup like texture. I use 1 1/2 cups of water instead of 2 cups and maybe 2 tablespoons of potato flakes. I just add till it looks good...a little at a time. the egg idea sounds good as well ,I must try it. Thanks.

    Take care,

    Bluefin

  • David it tasted awesome, and I made another batch and just dropped the eggs right on the hash browns and then turned it once till the eggs were done and that was great too.

  • Great video Pam ! 5 stars

  • Thanks, Pam.

  • Very good Tam! The hash browns and fried eggs looked delicious. As did the potato soup and biscuits. I'm going to have to kick my outdoor cooking a notch and follow your lead. Thanks!

  • keep them coming like to see more

  • Everything looked delicious!

  • Locke..

Everything WAS delicious! Tam outdid herself.. (I'm gotta get out and hike a bit or I'm going to start gaining weight again.. LOL!

  • Well from what I seen so far Tam is definitely a great cook and maybe one day we will get a chance to hike together David. Bless you and your family always.

    Chris
