The Carson show was where I first saw Leon. I couldnt believe my ears. I got up off the couch and stood in front of the tv during his entire performance. I love that vintage RCA microphone too.
Redbone is superb with "Melancholy Baby," but is not as well suited to "Some of These Days." This song belonged to Sophie Tucker, whose rendition was definitive.
I disagree. The vocal style popular in Tucker's day was awful. Melo-dramatic bunk. All they did was speak in affected pitches, whine, and bellow. I know that's merely opinion, and I have to take it in context and respect it as a stepping-stone in the development of Jazz music, but I feel intepretations like Redbones can pack in just as much emotion, and in this case convey it more accurately.
Why can't we have a show and host like Johnny Carson on TV today who introduce guest with REAL talent like this. I rememer Johnny very well and I can honestly say todays shows are stupid, silly and immature.
leon redbone can haz my babeez.

This is my favorite Leon Redbone recording. The bigger the audience, the more focused he is.

I think Sophie Tuckers version is just kind of loud and boring, great voice but I prefer Leon!
