lol, you need to got to school to learn proper mechanics. My favorite was throwing the mask on the ground to call a play at the plate. You're obviously a little league umpire, because in the high school and college level, you'd get eaten alive.
Couple quick things that we learned from out head of officiating. First, when calling a strike or ringing someone up, be careful about turning your head away from the field in case there were interference if a catch threw to a baseball and the batter walked through his throw. Second, we were always taught to not drop our mask when making an out call.
When giving your count, keep your hands steady, no movement needed. Your basically only communicating it to the pitcher so let him see it. Interference or obstruction sould be closed fist. Annouce balk from your crouching position, the pitcher can still bring the pitch and if there's a hit, the offense will be allowed to accapt that result. Remember clicker in left hand and on your calls, so sould your mask. never ever drop it my frend.
A few things for you, Enter the gam into play from the standing position, not crotching. Down crotch to the top of your strike zone until the pitcher begins his pitch, it'll save your knees. On you strikes, try not to look away from the field asstrongly as you do, you'll be wokring plenty of one man games and will miss action doing that. Some newer umps might try a straight back strike to keep their eyes forward on the field
haha that makes no sense you retard, you cant get 4 balls and 3 strikes. its called a full count when its 3 and 2 cause the old scoreboards had 2 lights for strikes and 3 for balls, when you get any more than that its time for the next batter.
So to finalize, keep practicing and remember NEVER drop your helmet. You may take it off to make a call, but hold it in your hand if its the hockey mask, or if its the older style, and you feel you need both hands, place it under one of your arms.
PLAY BALL: Be standing straight up and point to the pitcher, the catcher should be in his crouching position for point to the pitcher with your hand above the catcher's helmet.
STRIKE: When calling a strike, NEVER look away from the field of play and ALWAYS come out of the crouch so everyone can see you.
BALL: You can call a ball from the crouched position if you so choose.
FOUL TIP: Move the hand across the back of the other hand in a "smoothing motion" and say "FOUL TIP" and "FOUL BALL"
Pretty lame. Never look away from the ball when giving a strike call. You may find yourself in trouble when a runner is stealing a base and the catcher is interferred with by the batter. Always know where the ball is and what is happening in front of you. With the hockey style mask you hardly ever take it off, even to make a call. Never drop your mask like this guy did. That's one piece of equipment that never belongs on the field.
whatever limeaid23 lets see you do better. I play youth baseball and some umpires do the turn away strike signal. So shut yo mouth until you make a better video
Make sure that you have your elbows tucked closer to your body. You don't want them sticking out that far. You're just asking to get one of them busted up by a passed ball.
i think what most people are saying is basically right. get rid of the huge throat gaurd (get a smaller one if you want one), stay down on your ball call (you can stand after you make the call) dont turn your whole body on strike calls, NEVER throw your mask down (it isnt heavy and if it is get a new one) on calls like balks, infield fly or non delayed dead ball you need to be LOUD and convincing and the long sleeves are cool and for the record, im a minor league/college umpire, i know my stuff!
im certified for minor league and ill start doin minor league games next season, but for right now im a collegiate umpire for the ACC, PAC-10 and ive dun a few for the SEC. and yea, u shudnt turn ur whole body on a strike call so that you have @ least ur body facing the field in case something happens on the field that u need to see (if runners r on, but you shudnt have more than 1 call) and as a plate umpire u shud c EVERYTHING
Everything mae2759 says is correct. Never throw your mask...you can make the call with it, and you will be certain it never gets in the way of players if you keep it. Also, a little more emphasis on foul balls, calling a ball, etc. You don't mumble a ball call. Be forceful and convincing with the ball and strike calls.
would you like me to post the clinic and schools I have been to?.. And if you leave your mask on the ground and some kid slides into or steps on it and get hurt... look out for a lawsuit... But hey critter what have you umpired? and what schools have you been to?
It's good to film yourself as a way to study your mechanics.
Here are some pointers in order:
1. Why are you bent down already to say "Play Ball?" You should be straight up with a hand in the air to signal "Do not pitch" then point to the pitcher and say "Play"
2. Don't turn to the side when signaling a strike. you may miss a possible interference by the batter on a pick off attempt because you turned away from the action.
3.Just call the ball foul while giving the dead ball signal.
One last thing..Everyone, especially in umpire school says NOT to turn to the side when calling a strike...but almost every single umpire I have ever seen does it...what gives?
Golf - I didn't see an answer to your question...so I'll give it a shot. The side strike mechanic is what was taught at the pro level for a long time, originally to indicate the number of strikes on the batter and where it could be clearly seen by the players, audience, etc. It then evolved into just calling a strike to the side and as a way to distinguish yourself from other umpires and personalize it. However, as the game has grown and changed, the umpires have had to adjust as well.
Most amateur umpires (like anyone) watch the pros do their thing and so, we all learned it that way too. However, especially in amateur ball, there is often action going on that requires attention toward the field and/or where the ball is and therefore the mechanic evolved to the front-facing hammer mechanic that's popular now. It takes some getting used to, but even after 20 years of doing it the old fashioned way, I learned. ;)
@mae2759 yeah 3yrs ago i know 1)That "shovel" on his mask is to protect his throat 2)Doesnt matter what you wear as long as its not white 3)You back off the plate calling signals 4)You DO move your hands giving the count so BOTH benches can see it 5)You call "dead ball or foul" 6)Mask can come off with either hand 8)When you call a balk you throw your hands up calling for a dead play and forward the runner on base 9)Doesnt matter just make sure everyone can see the call
What a goober...don't make any more videos. You are making a fool of yourself!!

BALK: If I remember correctly, I believe a balk is FIRST signaled by a "strike" or "out" signal then point and say "BALK" and direct base runners.
SAFE CALL: Good, but don't drop the helmet.
OUT CALL: Too low for most to see. Again, don't drop the helmet.
EJECTION: Point to the player who you are ejecting, then take your arm and move as if you are throwing a ball into the crowd or sky.
Keep working on it. ...

PLAY BALL; Stand up straight, and not crouched down behind the catcher.
STRIKE; Make your call while looking at the field, not to the side.
BALL; Make your call or non-call while still in the crouch. Not while standing up.
STRIKE THREE; Always keep the field in your vision. Don't look off to the side.
TIME, DEAD BALL, FOUL; About the only signals this guy gets right.
FOUL TIP; Too flamboyant. AND he forgot to give the strike call after indicating that the ball was touched by the bat.

your not an umpire are you
stand up tall when you say play ball.
your stance is way off in every perspective.
strike call is wrong too, dont look away from the action.
stay low when you call a ball, dont stand up right away.
never seen such an ugly third strike call, but there really is no right and wrong.
dont say dead ball.
foul tip, finish it with an out signal, however it does not mean the batter is out, just the right signal.
there is a sign for infield fly.
dont say full count
qb12lango 3 years ago
never say dead ball, never say full count. And it's "that's a balk! Time... you first base, you second base etc.
Also wait to umpire a game until you realize that it's not your show.

If I were you I would try Umpire school. Read some manuals to sharpen up on your skills. Whats that on your mask?
simpsonkid2 4 years ago
1) Get rid of the shovel head hanging from your mask
2) Never wear a long sleeved shirt under a short sleeved one
3) Stay down on your "ball" calls
4) Don't move your hands when giving the count
5) Don't say "dead ball"
6) Mask ALWAYS comes off with the left hand
7) DON'T DROP YOUR MASK ON YOUR CALLS
8) The verbage for balks should be "That's a balk! You- 2nd base!"
9) Don't make your out call at the plate look like you're stabbing someone- make it a punch
10) Eject away from the coach
