I saw June Bronhill at the old Wells in Orpheus in the Underworld. It was only the second time I'd been there. I was 14. She was enchanting. The perfect soubrette. I wouldn't go home until my Dad bought me the LP!
Absolutely beautiful!!!! Please ballaratboy upload some more videos of June, if you have them!!?? Preferably some sound of music, and some opera? There isn't that much of her singing opera on youtube, and I understand she sang quite a bit of Mozart. Also, the Pipes of Pan from the Arcadians? if you possibly have it! I heard her on the radio singing that and its DIVINE! thank you - a huge fan of June! :)
I saw June in the Widow in (I think) 1967,in London,at the Coliseum, she has always remained the benchmark for me when I buy CD (or attend live theatrical) versions.
She had a sweetness of voice without being sickly. Her diction was pure and clear, and her agility of voice outstanding!
Can you tell I like her?LOL
It's just sad there are not more recordings of her.
@MrSwifts31 yes you are so right! There is a CD, platinum collection 3 disc box set of all her most famous songs and a few extras, but the CD which is relatively new in terms of being put together is extremely rare and very difficult to buy anywhere!! It seems to be always 'currently unavailable!' I've searched everywhere, but you might be lucky where you live! Its called June Bronhill: The Platinum Collection, and has a white cover.
I was lucky enough to be working backstage at the "Wells" when June sang this. What a star and a perfect lady. Time for the workers and a huge sense of fun.

ballarat, my only quibble with what you say is "one of". IMHO, she's the best Vilja ever. I admit Joan Sutherland was also the business with this song but.... June forever! Thomas Round was terrific as well in the same show!
Ballaratboy ..you are a darling I have wanted to hear June sing since I was very young living in Melbourne and had the opportunity to actually attend one of her concerts, so here i sit in a little Utah rural town now and it ws still magical,,,Thankyou Ballarat boy.
I was lucky enough to see June Bronhill in The Merry Widow on stage in Sydney somewhere around 50 years ago. It was an experience I have never forgotten. She made Vilja her own - and no-one has ever taken it away from her, in my opinion. Her crescendo on the last note gave me goose bumps. As I recall, it was longer and more gradual than in this recording. Needless to say, she brought the house down and had to encore it.
You didn't waste any time Ballaratboy I only requested VILJA less than 24 hours ago. The best Merry Widow in my opinion is the 1959 recording with the Sadler's Wells Opera Co. and Orchestra. (no coughing!) I met June when she was quest of honour at the Melbourne Cup many years ago. I have to say that the high pedestal I had her on lowered a little (she was drunk!). Her diction and sweetness of voice is just outstanding.
I only looked up June Bronhill because my grandparents went to school with her, but i'm glad i did now - she's got quite a beautiful voice

Just marvellous.
June was, IMHO, the best Vilja bar none, including Schwarzkopf and Gueden.
