Can you post "The Bells Of St Mary's", "Running Wild", "She's Funny That Way ", "Under Paris Skies", "You You You", "Arrivederci, Roma", "London By Night", "Sweet Leilani", "Galway Bay ", or "The Coffee Song"? I saw them in a listing of Sam's songs and I want to know how they sound.
Sam Cooke was one of the best singers, if not the very best, and Cooke's vocal is excellent on this rendition of one of my all time favorite songs, "Danny Boy." Yet, I have to admit, I don't care for the loping arrangement - it detracts from the mournful quality of the lyric and tune, which ultimately defines this song. For a truer rendition, look to Mahalia Jackson, Tony Bennett, Eva Cassidy, Andy Williams, Marianne Faithful, Eric Clapton (instrumental version, yet very moving), etc.
@twowaystreet101 - I can respect very much what you say about this rendition of "Danny Boy", regarding Sam's "Loping Arrangement" of this song. However, that "Loping" sound you here, and I'm certain you're aware it, was distinct only to Sam Cooke. When you heard a song, wherein, its arrangement was as such, you knew... almost instantly, it was Sam Cooke. Personally, I happen to love this example of "Danny Boy"; loping and all. But, I'm bias, I love all of Sam Cooke's material.
Well I'm a huge Sam Cooke fan, but I have to say I think this one misses the mark. I've always heard this song as a father singing to his son who is going off, probably to war, and may not be back home til after he's dead (in the missing last verse.) This version misses the melancholy, it's just too upbeat. For a great R&B cover of this Irish classic, try the Jackie Wilson version.
Peace, Sam Cooke is my ultimate favorite of all singers. His soul sound has touched my soul. My father was a devout fan when i was a boy, now my children adore Sams sound as much as i have. Thank you for the post.
@mbsunlimited I love Sam's rendition of Danny Boy. But I must say Jakie Willson rendition of it is absolutely Mind-Blowing! If you haven't heard it, check it out & tell me what you think. Awwwwwaomeness on the real.
@lash65 I'm glad Sam sang this Irish Cathoic hymn. Presently I connect Sam Cooke & Ricky Nelson because of their sad deaths. Yes, Sam's voice has something comforting and encouraging in it. And I notice he also sang "Canadian Sunset". Sam is gone now some 50 years, but He lives on in our hearts & in Heaven, I'm sure. A retired Cathoilic priest in Canada.
@watchful38 A little research and you will find that this song has no religious persuasion in fact probably leans more to the Protestant faith seeing that it was wrote by an Englishman. Irishman from Ireland.
@TheGockaRocka Well, Kate Smith, Bing Crosby and Perry Como sang 'Danny Boy'...each devout Catholics. It was sung at the funerals of J.F. Kennedy and other prominent Catholics. What seals the deal is the "Ave" in line 12. It refers to the 'Ave Maria' hymn in praise of 'Mary, the Mother of God'. Granted that F. Weatherly, no doubt not a Catholic, the lyrics have a Catholic reference to the Blessed Virgin Mary. This is not in the Protestant or Anglican tradition. (Con't)...
@TheGockaRocka The ultimate solution is unclear. Both Protestant & Catholic Irishmen around the world use the same lyrics. "Londonerry Air" has a pronounced 'Protestant' connotation. Perhaps the Catholics, nevertheless, love the tune, whilst the Protestants accept the 'Ave' because they are usually, like the Catholics, sufficiently inebriated when they sing 'Danny Boy'. 'A vino ratio est semper occultata." (Horation Odes or, perhaps, Ovid's 'Love Poems') Let's call it a tie! LOL
sam your voice was a blessing given to you for a reason and I thank you for what you left us with in song may you always rest in peace.and to my friend Topcat without those days of you and your vega comming through dog patch I would have never known the beauty of sam music.

I always liked Sam Cooke and listened to everything he recorded but this song made me realize that he had the finest male voice i have ever heard.
His voice is a cocktail of joyful purity offset by an uninhibited rawness which compliment each other perfectly and were reflected in his lifestyle.
His voice makes me feel comfortable and I stay that way for some time thereafter.
Not many things in my life have been able to do that so thank you to Sam, Youtube and those of you who post his music.
