After seeing and hearing any of Ruggero Raimondi's Scarpias (they're all fascinatingly different), it's hard to listen to anyone else without drawing comaprisons. Bryn Terfel has a wonderful voice, and he's clearly taken a page from Raimondi's book on how to portray Scarpia. With one major exception--Raimondi's Scarpias all possess innate sensuality and are very attractive whereas Terfel's Scarpia delights in displaying brute strength and his behavior is motivated by crass lustfulness.
Yes, you definitely recognize a Raimondi admirer in me! A very big admirer, in fact! My family and I consider him absolutely the greatest! He's completely breathtaking on stage.
Malfitano is a great actress, singer and dancer (see her in "Salome"'s). Terfel is loosing by the Dutch idea of staging. Ruggero Raimondi is the best Scarpia ever!
I know for a fact that she is NOT a bad actress. Her portrayal of Salome with Bryn at Covent Garden in 1997 can testify to that. This seems to be a singer trying to cope with questionable direction. Her movement seems weird BECAUSE her blocking seems weirdly motivated. -in the boiler room of a ship????
She is also playing like this in the movie with Ruggero Raimondi and Domingo (Tosca - in the settings and in the times of - thats the name, i believe) But that is because it's her interpretation of Tosca's struggle... i believe. ^^ I very much like her as Tosca, Terfel is great as well! A very mean Scarpia, just mean.
I love Malfitano in this role. She's suitablely fiesty and increasingly deranged as she becomes more desparate. I wasn't sure about the production initially but it's certainly grown on me-especially Malfitano's fabulous leap at the end- can't wait for the DVD to arrive to watch the whole production!
crazymezzosoprano, that aria's name is "Te Deum". and as you know it's brilliant. Hope someone upload that too. I watched Terfel singing the role of Scarpia in Royal Opera House, and he indeed is a brilliant, actor and a singer.
So interesting to see Malfitano singing Tosca at this stage in her career. Honestly, I think it was too late. The singing is too cautious and effortful, and she sounds rather pinched. It was also a mistake to cast her in this demi-avant garde (if you allow me the term) production. Well, I suppose this was before the ascent of Miss Netrebko.
I think she's great. It sounds perfectly fine and she is such an amazing actress, it's worth it if it's not "perfect", As for Netrebko, whose above average looks far overshadow her singing, I would much prefer Catherine! A hundred times!
Gorgeous guy!!

Terfel seems to be such a nice guy and he looks sooo bad in this production xD A very good actor. I also like Malfitano very much as Tosca.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
Bryn is one of the best Scarpias I've ever seen. It's just perfect. But the soprano is very bad actress and her voice is too "light" for Tosca...

I love this opera...any chance of posting the scene where Tosca and Scarpia are on the steps and arguing...that's wickedly good.
