  • i love this kentucky derby i watch it again and again, well not that much, but amazing horse, totally out of the blue, i love the comments by commentators!!! go mine that bird, i hope you are enjoying your retirement

  • WoW it has to suck for those military lining the finish line...You know they all wanted to keep there eyes on Mine That Bird as he went by...But they all kept looking straight ahead...

  • you know it's a major upset.....when the announcer doesnt know the horse's name !!!

that's why the run the race

  • my dad bet 22 bucks on mine that bird

    haha

  • This comentator is a moron, never saw the horse in the lead.

  • calvin is an amazing jockey and mine that bird is a helluva horse

  • Totally incredible run!!!!!!!

  • WoW! Somebody got paid, whomever had Faith in this horse. Wow!!!!! 2009 THAT WAS TOTALLY AWESOME, THIS HORSE IS FASSSSSSSST x a billion, the jockey helped it out tremedously, GREAT TEAM!!!

THAT'S WHAT IT TAKES TO SUCCEED.

  • WoW! Somebody got paid, whomever had Faith in this horse. Wow!!!!! 2009

  • Rude comments? The Horses have numbers!

  • Mrfitzwilly

I believe he said it was an impossible finish..Because late in the race he said mine that bird was way out of it...

  • Whaaaaaaaaaat, that's the first time I seen this race... OMG that horse M O V E D... Jeez 50/1 and cost under $10k... Jeez Louise!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Everyone here leaves rude comments about how Tom Durkin missed Mine That Bird until he was way in front and I'm sick of it. YOU try keeping track of 20 horses at the same time.

  • @SuperCharlieKitty

.. true, being a track announcer is a tough job, esp. with a huge field like this. BUT Tom is getting on in years, he has made a lot of blunders in big races recently. Not to take away from his talent, he is talented.

  • I am Scottish but I really love American thoroughbred racing it is brilliant. I wish I could attend the Belmont this year !

  • Thank Yous Calvin and Mine That Bird, this was so awesome.

    Thanks for the upload Luisbelusi.

  • Depending on the horse it's best to go on the inside on the turns and better to go on the outside on the straight part so you don't hold back and get caught in the pack.

  • If Mine That Bird gets the inside it's over.

  • I could announce better than this guy, "impossible finish"? Not to difficult to realize he said that as an excuse for not knowing who was coming through the pack.

  • Man that bird..

  • 1:03 and well behind the rest of them is Mine That Bird, AMAZING!

  • The race announcer Tom Durkin redeemed himself a couple of weeks later in the next Triple Crown Race, the 2009 Preakness. His call for that race was brilliant and spectacular. I hope he comes back to call Triple Crown races again (since announcing not to renew his contract with NBC Sports in April 2011).

  • i love how tom durkin says chocolate candy at 1:33 lol....but what a job by mine that bird

  • Durkin, the announcer, now says he will not do the triple crown again. He says that his miss of Mine that Bird was one he would like to have back......

  • Comment removed

  • if you bet $50 on this horse to win, you would win $2500. Somebody got paid.

  • i played this race on horseracingfantasy and i came in last with mine that bird.......lol what does this say about my jockeying skills?

  • The Little Bird that could!

  • I love the video at :32 it appears Mine That Bird is dead last. What a race! Go MTB!

  • Dang those horses can run FASTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT

  • Haha, the commentator didn't even know who that little horse exploding along the rail was until he was a few lengths ahead! From the sound of the call, I think he had to look down at his notes to find out his name! I love MTB! And boy did he prove himself in the rest of the triple crown! He went 1-2-3! Not bad for a 50-1 longshot, hey?

  • are these purbred's or thourobreds?

these horses are 3 years old?

are there any other races than this type?

  • @hereHehereHE Purebred Thoroughbred 3 year old colts and there are 3 classics each year, (Preakness Stakes, Belmont Stakes) with the breeder cup world championship at the end of the year

  • This commentator just got OWNED by Mine that Bird :))) 50-1 !.

  • I had predicted that Mine That Bird would win! I remember that day watching..it was spectacular! i'll never forget it!!!1

  • This race would have been much more historical if the announcer paid more attention to the rail.

  • i see terrible substrate

  • lol mine that bird was gaining on them on the rail wayyyyyyyyy earlier than the commentator acknowledged

  • didn't the commentator see mine that bird earlier? seem to ignore the horse until the rce was almost over

  • It's like Secretariat reincarnated...for this one race

  • I'll give him the benefit of the doubt as nobody saw that coming. But if he is a professional, you have to be prepared for anything, and he wasn't.

  • Terrible commentary.

  • commentator should be fired ....fuckin nob

  • i want mine that bird !

  • I remember that day, and everyone thought I was crazy saying Mine That Bird would win.

  • calvin has guts boyyyyyy

  • Calvin was on the right horse, at the right time, on the right track, and in the mud. This was mostly Calvin. Mine That Bird has never won since. That said, I love that horse. If I was rich I'd buy him and build him his own ranch. He is just a little horse, size wise, with a big heart. If he had been a larger horse he would not have made that opening. Calvin hit the rail with his boot as it was. Terrific ride, one of the best. Calvin did it again in 2010.

  • i really think that the lateness of Durkins response just showed how great Mine That Bird was on this day. He was lost for words when he saw this horse who didn't appear to belong in this race, take off from no mans hand to win the Kentucky Derby

  • The announcer messed it up. He didn't even know what was what in the end.

  • That interview is just the cutest thing EVER!

  • I can't believe it - Mine that Bird was dead last at the start of the race! Similar to Zenyatta, he came from behind big time!

  • 1:45

  • Was the announcer even watching the race? Mine That Bird was a length in front of the field before the announcer said anything.

  • @desolatefox : Amen! Mine that Bird was 3 1/2 to 4 lengths ahead and 8 secs away from crossing the finish line before the announcer acknowledged he was leading. I was amazed. I think he was so focused on the two heavy favorites that he somehow managed to completely overlook what was unfolding…..astonishing!

  • @desolatefox

Haha he wasn't expecting MINE THAT BIRD at 50-1 to be makin noise down the stretch. Much less pulling away.

  • When all around you insist that You can't possibly do it, give this a watch.

  • he seems to have an amazing way on making his move right before the last turn, capable of actually forcing the horse to take the turn on a momentum, then his intensity down the stretch is like no other jockey's. Watch him with his stick.. he has incredible strength, endurance and humility... All God like qualities...Strong, enduring and humble... the formula to life...

  • is the kentucky derby held in louisville or in lexington?? I'm German and interested in this event.

  • Does anyone know: Are the 2 broadcasters' voices, after the race, those of Tom Durkins (who called the race) and jockey Gary Stevens?

  • God bless Calvin

  • i love the Kentucky Derby so much and i love mind that bird so much

  • Calvin loved his parents and showes his respect. He's a kind and caring person. God bless him

  • I know Borel is a fantastic jockey, so nothing against him, but I honestly am annoyed with how people give him all the credit for this win - yes he rode EXTREMELY well, but he also could never have won if Mine The Bird wasn't such an incredible horse...the speed he shows in the last quarter-mile is unbelievable - for a small underdog horse like him to make a time second to Secretariat is phenomenal and I truly believe Mine That Bird should get a lot more praise than he does.

  • I love how quick MTB passes horses.

  • I love Calvin's emotion. It's pure, it's raw and it's true.

  • That was a sensational last-second surge by Mine that Bird!

  • This was the first horse race I had ever watched. When I saw it, despite my lack of knowledge in the sport I knew I had witnessed something spectacularly amazing

  • My all time favorite! The entire video was just perfect--Well done on this posting of a fantastic race!

  • BTW Calvin Borel will ride Super Saver in seven days, who knows he could do it again

  • I think that the announcer does a superb job, right up until Bird has a breakaway; Don't know what he could've been looking at !

  • 3:30~3:32 He~* told me how to ride my horses; and taught me.

  • He gets 4 lengths ahead before the announcer said anything!

  • @jsb4life He was just so surprised, he was in last!!! lol. What a comeback!

  • The announcer is an idiot! Get a clue dude!

  • Thank you Mine that Bird and Calvin, you guys paid my truck off for me. I bet $50 on them for the win and at 50-1, you do the math!!

  • 50-1 upset truly amazing

  • wow. i love this race

  • i think tom durkin didn't even notice mtb until almost the end lol. he won by alot! more than Big Brown did.

  • Just as impressive of a race by Mine That Bird was Calvins ride and, even more so, his genuine exuberance after winning. Good to see that happen to a journeyman jockey who 1st jumped into the national spotlight aboard Street Sense and then Rachel. Good example of how patience, diligence and a great life-long work ethic does pay off. Not sure if anyone could wipe the smile off his face for months. Good for you CB.

  • Kent Desormeaux made a really early move on Hold Me back. If he was held until the turn and made his move with 3 furlongs to go and not after the clubhouse turn. He is a really good jockey though. I just think he makes early moves.

  • Mine that Bird did this on my 19th birthday! Mine That Bird was amazing in this race...WOW.

  • I love watching this whenever I need a boost .. Winter is long..... I do think I would fire that announcer if given the chance .. awful.. just awful

  • The big winner of last years triple crown was Birdstone, boy did his value as a Stallion go up. This horse has not won since just like Giacomo 50-1 one race wonders who picked the right race to win!

  • ? They do it all the time. Look at Funny Cide back on 03. He was a gelding and still raced and won. And John Henry like Kada said.

  • That race...was amazing! They really did light a rocket under that pony's butt! LOVED IT!

  • WOW!!! Chills...

  • Why in the world would anyone castrate a race horse and still race it?

Please answer this question if you know it.

I mean, if Mike Tyson lost his nuts before he got into boxing, would he still be Iron Mike as we all knew him? 100% not.

  • So they horse may be actually calm enough to run, show his bloodlines are good so people go back to his daddy for their next colts. Something like that. John Henry was a total ass who couldn't win, got gelded, kicked ass. So they are interested in race record, not future breeding money. *shrugs*

  • There are two reasons. First, some horses are so unmanageable as stallions that gelding them is the only way to make them behave (ex.: John Henry). The other reason is if the horse has undescended testicles. This was the case with Funny Cide. His one undescended testicle made it uncomfortable for him to run, so he was gelded. (It is sometimes possible to bring the testicle into a normal position, but it is complicated.)

  • @StudLife28

At one point, the Preakness wasn't even open to geldings.

  • wtf about this American life. people are DUMB

  • American Life of This

  • TAL

  • Dido

  • This American Life

  • This American Life!

  • This American Life 2

  • $9500.

  • I know-that's just nuts-in a great way!

  • TAL!

  • Lol. I love how everyone commenting is watching this because of This American Life. Same here. XD

  • One more person watching this because of This American Life. =)

  • How funny. I'm watching this b/c of TAL, also. LOVE Ira Glass :)

  • This america life!

  • Was also listening to the This American Life podcast on my iPod while out for a run and heard this. I actually grew up watching the Derby with my Dad and brother, placing imaginary bets on the horses, but somehow missed this race! Amazing finish, class act jockey.

  • Wow! I also heard this story on "This American Life" and had to watch it. It looked like this horse was on Turbo mode.

  • lol I am listening to "This American Life" right now on my MAC and was was like I wanna see this, paused it and went to YouTube, started cracking up when I read your comment. lol

    Love This American Life!!!!

  • currently doing exactly the same haha

  • @caligulrlc85 me too! :D

  • That is what great horse racing is about. It doesn't get any better!

  • freakin amazing

  • That was absolutely beautiful!! What a horse and what a rider! Awesome!

  • I never watch racing but I heard about this victory on This American Life last Sunday. What a thing to see!

  • Me too. Was just listening online, had to pause it and pop over to check it out (as Ira suggested,) and boy did it deliver. What an exceptional race.

  • me too! ira glass getting me into horse racing? who knew!

  • I never watch horse racing, but that was a beautiful thing to watch.

  • i love that the announcer had to check his name when mine that bird started to take the lead.

  • WoW thats horse is gigantic

    *clap clap*

    wunderful horse

  • i always drive through where MTB was raised, just a fun fact lol

  • he may have announced some good ones but jeez he barely gets the name out when it is OBVIOUS the horse is making a big move

  • Who knows maybe Chantal may have won. Some horses sense how a person is may/not take well to them. MTB always did well under Chantal.

  • does anyone notice how CRAPPY this announcer is???

  • do you have any idea how many Memorable races he has called.

  • I heard that he had spent 21 day in a truck goint to Churchill Downs. May be, he had had a GOOD rest there?! Of course, other horses feel nervous while travelling on such big distances, but he's a gelding, so may be that journey was VERY useful for him, he wasn't nervous. That is kinda FUNNY!!!! And unbelievable!

This is worth Seabiscuit's story! May be, we should make a film about Mine That Bird?!

  • Every horse gave him his way as we give way to the passing trucks. But on the first meters of start, Join In The Dance pulled Mine That Bird quiet strong, so he got stuck beetween him and Papa Clem. But that wasn't a problem to Mine That Bird, still he managed to have a good position, then when it needed he burst out with a GREAT speed and WON!!!!!!! Really, GREAT HORSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • no...just no

  • You disagree? Surprised my post has -3, didn't seem like that big a deal. Oh well, that's the internet for you.

  • Mine that bird ran very well in the preakness. He hasn't raced well since then really. I think just give him some time and he will come into his own again next year and win some big races.

  • 1337, he had won 3 or four races in Canada. I HATE people who always bash horses. And YES I know about horse racing not everything but I do know. The Horse is known because he was sired by Birdstone who defeated SJ in the Belmont won the Travers. The hors who is a mudder etc..

  • whats the jockey's name?

hey is regal ransom a gelding too? or intact

  • That idiot announcer needs to be fired.

  • This horse has heart and gave us all hope !

  • Change We can believe in.

  • WORST RACE CALLER IN HISTORY.

  • lol that was pretty bad at the end. and the first call of the field lol hilarious.

  • what about the preakness running down rachael if the race was 10 more feet or maybe musketman and almost won the belmont also. I think the bird would have won the preakness if borel was on him. Smith rod the bird that race and said him self after the race he should have asked for something earlier. He is a fantastic race horse with super blood lines but correct this is by far the toughest race he has ever lined up with. I like him summerbird, and einstein also good luck to you all

  • Amazing horse with a hell of a heart for racing. When asked that horse would fly to heaven if it were possible. He loves to run and will definately make it into the record/history books.

  • great ride but the competition in the breeders cup will be stiffer. Anyone know if that commentator has woken up yet? He didnt actually see the winner until past the finishing line.

  • i wouldnt count that horse out ever

been trying to run in front more i heard lately and hasnt worked out look out for a late stretch run into the top 3 for sure

    good luck betting

  • Gratz Z Best COme From Back :D Silky Sulivan Mine That bird THE BEST

  • Holy fuck, did any one else notice that Mine That Bird was 'well behind the rest of them' Holy hell that boy can run that horse is fucking amazing. He's going to make it into the Redord/History Books I just know it.

  • He is pretty overrated. Would be a surprise if he got higher than 7th in the Breeders Cup Classic.

  • It's sad that you don't realize true talent. Some thing that should be admired.

  • yeah because he doesnt run on synthetic you idiot.. get learned son

  • I went to Santa Anita today for the first time (first horse race as well!) The best Jockeys all race here I guess and MTB was one of them here today. I couldn't believe how SMALL MTB was compared to all the other horses!! You'd think a small horse like that wouldn't have the lungs to go hammer down like that but damn!! I can see why horse racing is addicting! :-D time to go play online and learn a little! :-D

  • I feel so bad for joe :(

so terrible that I Want Revenge was scratched :(

  • What a terrible race call from Tom Durkin. First off he almost forgets that Mine That Bird is in the race early on when he calls another horse last until he see's MTB. Then MTB is in the stretch and has the race won before Durkin even figures out who it is. Great race but probably his worst race call in a triple crown event.

  • wow. mine that bird!! I can't imagine how Chantal Sutherland felt when her horse won. wow so close.

  • I feel terrible for Joe Talamo. I was rooting for him and I Want Revenge, can't believe he got scratched the morning of. Great race, Mine That Bird is an amazing horse. Congrats to Calvin.

  • Chantal Sutherland must have been crushed! Amazing race!

  • Chantal Wouldn't Of Won With him

There Is Only One Jockey That Has The Nerve To Risk Running On The Rail

Im Sorry But She Wouldn;t Of Won With Him

  • maybe not, but still shes got to be crushed.

  • When the economy falter years ago another horse gave us hope and Seabiscuit lives in memory forever. On the 1st Saturday in May a horse named Mine That Bird teaches us that dreams come true!

  • $9500 horse wins the greatest race in the world

  • My dad trained/owned that horse when it was in woodbine.

  • i bet he wishes that he had not sold him, but if he hadnt would your dad have had him in the derby? i heard the trainer give him props when he was in the winners circle. I love horses hun and one day i want to turn my farm into a strictly horse farm, im only 23 now but by the time im 30 thats what i want to have acomplished.

  • He sold Mine that Bird due to money issues I believe. He didnt even have the money for entry, but this race and cause of the present trainer's comment proves that my paps is a great trainer and thoroughbred agent. His best horses he usually bought for very little, yet they would be horses that were worth millions since birth. I'm very proud of him.

  • Just look at the first turn (30 sec. into the video) they're at very last position. Now look at the last turn (1:25 min. of the video) they're still the last one. WOW!!! JUST AWESOME!!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • This is what happens when you never give up, know how to drive and have a horse that thinks he can't loose.

Great race...The Hoirse and Jockey inspire me in my own struggles in life.

    RS

  • oh my shit what a beauty i frikin laugh and fall cuz is iz totally unbeliveable iv never seen anything like it in my life come on it wuz dead last then it wuz in first place wow i wonder wha it would b like live ur sayin my horse iznt gnna win but the your like shut the barn doors and like yay wowowowow we won the kuntucky derby well im happy for you that horse has to b a leat at LEAST 3 million dollars o well i would buy him i have the money but he is probaly not in claiming races

  • im meant 11 lences or however you spell it haha

  • wow you won bye at least 12 fer longs we own race horses but russell baze rides them

  • It's not how you start but how you finish.

  • There is a really well-written article about the Kentucky Derby on wikihorseworld . com. To read the article, go to the site and search for Kentucky_Derby

It's pretty cool, because if you feel like anything needs to be added to the article, you can add to it by editing the article.

  • what was the first upset in race history

  • Secretariat won the derby by only 2 1/2 lengths. It was his Belmont that was the whopping 31 lengths.

  • i love the fact that durkin didnt even relise he was ahead till he was allready to far ahead to catch

  • Well mermaids...Barbaro won the Kentucky derby. By a bigger distance...Not to take anything away from MTB....He ran a great race also!!!!!

  • Barbaro won by a shorter distance.

  • Barbaro won by 6 1/2 lenghts while MTB won by 6 3/4

  • Hahaha I just love the announcer "On the inside that is uhhh..... Mine that Bird!" ahaha he's like "where the hell did THAT come from...?"

  • I bet on him!!!!!!!!!!

  • I couldn't help it but have a tear for him, lucky man ;-)
