Not true Adam... Whoever told you that forgot to mention that light travels at a given speed which means that the universe could be infinite but you might not see the light yet from the stars that are REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY far away... It takes time longer than the universe has existed for light to travel from such a great distance therefor it wouldn't be all filled with light.
I think Craig and Jonathan Ross should do an interview together because I've heard someone on Jon's show said that he's changing subjects very fast too, so it's be interesting.
Why do people think that if the universe is infinite then there should be nothing but light all around us? For one, as mentioned by Craig, there are stars that are far enough that their light hasn't reached us yet. Stars also have finite lifespans so they're not gonna be emitting light forever. There are also black holes that could block the light from reaching us. Black holes can pull light that's passing by close enough.
@shicrapt I just think people have a difficult time accepting the idea of an infinite universe. Anything being infinite is a hard concept to accept for many people.
@Galactic123 An infinite universe used to be a prevalent concept before the findings of the last century. "Many people" is too vague a term to argue with, but I'd say an infinite universe is a very familiar notion for most of us.
But the light from the infinite stars would have had to have gotten here by now if the universe has been here for an infinite period of time (even if it's old stars that have already died there would be ONE of them out there) unless the universe has only been around for a finite period of time, but since the universe is continuously expanding and has only been here for a finite amount of time then it can't be of infinite size or it would have never contracted to its finite beginning unlezzzzzzz
You can't just try to rationalise an arbitrary concept and pretend to come to a logical conclusion.
Replace the word [infinte] with [concept that makes no logical sense] and the rest of your statement becomes ridiculous. And that's where the human race stands in regard to the universe today. The end.
I think Craig read Stephen Hawking books! Specifically The Brief History of Time, in which he discusses the point Adam made and explains it pretty much like Craig did.)
There are an infinite amount of infinitely sized Universes. Any/all possibilities are simultaneously existent. Equally so, none of the possibilities exist. For example, God exists, absolutely. As well, God does not exist (absolutely). God is the ultimate creator and as well he is only the created. Put it this way; You prove existence by the mere fact that you exist. I don't have children. To those children that I've never had, there is no existence, no Universe, no being.. Nothing.
awesome conversation! I was blazed through the whole thing too which was NICE :D
I think Adam makes an EXCELLENT point about how everything would just be white if the universe was infinite, I love that and it hadn't ever occurred to me :P
A parallel universe or alternative reality is a hypothetical self-contained separate reality coexisting with one's own. A specific group of parallel universes is called a "multiverse", although this term can also be used to describe the possible parallel universes that constitute physical reality
Oh Adam! The universe can still be infinite because the universe is expanding. Galaxies beyond a certain horizon are receding from us faster than the speed of light, therefore their stars' light will never reach us! Sheesh! :)
infinite doesn't exist. Everything ends sometime or somewhere. The universe is finite. Scientists even know how big it approximately is, and it's expanding in an increasing rate which will cause the universe to cool down and eventually die out. But that is gonna take some years :)
@watcherob Why do you assume an infinite universe is not possible? I don't believe anyone knows the approximate size of the universe, only a lower limit to infinity. You are probably thinking of the observable universe. Also heat death is a theory, there are other theories.
@mattymuck Because nothing is infinite. Nothing stays around forever and nothing has always been there. Everything has a beginning and an end only some things are around for a looooooong time. We are probably in one of many universes (not parallel). It started with the big bang and the explosion is still ongoing, expanding, and will eventually die out.
@watcherob Actually whether by an infinite or unbound finite universe, the universe would still be technically infinite. It is impossible to apply theories to anything outside our "universe". Also once again you are talking about the heat death theory as if it is fact, do you think a universe at thermo equilibrium won't exist? From what I've read an expanding universe may not even approach maximal entropy. There are also cyclic theories referring to a "bang and crunch" using quantum gravity.
@Yonique I think Craig was talking about the distance of the stars, not their speed. Light emitted from stars that are far enough away would not reach us in our lifetime.
actually the speed of the stars doesnt affect the speed of light, as Einstein discovered, boo @craig for a lack of knowledge about the special relativity theory! lol :X
it's to do with light specturums, but if u look at the night sky theres billions of stars but we can only see some, and light from the furtherst stars hasn't reached us yet
@seanpaul666able He looks nothing like Hetfield O.o ... although I think Hetfield would be awesome on the show, his interviews are always cool and funny, so I'd like to see that
After I resumed the video Freakin Ferguson said EXACTLY what I said except really complicated... Lol. Great minds think alike.

@SeaMonkeyz666 Energy isn't infinite, it just can't be created or destroyed. There's still a limited amount of it.

@V2Blast Exactly. Same goes for all matter as well. Atleast if we go with the theory that matter doesn't get "lost" in black holes.
