What they do is cut away all the skin to allow the arm to have room to swell, or something like that.

@nunubatman the reason it has been split like that was to relieve the pressure that builds up w/ the swelling. if the pressure isnt relieved then the limb can rupture and u have almost no chance of recovering the use of it where as if the skin can be split and then when the swelling goes down the main concern would be to keep out infection but you would have a greater chance of recovering the use of the limb.

Crotalus oreganus isn't that bad, there hasn't been a death due to one in a very long time. The pic of the swelling isn't the muscles swelled and burst through the skin, the doctors would have made incisions into the skin to allow room for the tissue to swell. As bad as that bite was, I highly doubt it was from Crotalus oreganus aka "Northwestern Rattlesnake"/"Northern Pacific Rattlesnake" etc. I've caught them for fun when training in Yakima before (prior service Infantry)
