It started to go downhill whne they focused more on the reality fare(The Hills, Laguna Beach, etc.) and pop music (TRL).
It would be cool if the creator did another story/show similar to this. Of course, that would be asking a lot because it would be VERY hard to live up to this shows standards. Considering how many wonderful creators end up doing worse shows and get criticized for it.
On the DVD released, Eichler actually leaked an entire script for a Mystik Spiral spinoff that would have had Trent and the band move to another town. None of the other Daria characters appeared in the script, if I recall.

On another note, just watching this makes me think of how I still hate that this show ended--It was a favorite of mine during middle and high school...
I like to imagine that this is just 'pretend futures' the same way that at the end of each Daria episode, they would have the characters in strange or ironic outfits...I'm hoping this ending was for irony and not the real ending ;_;

This show spanned from the end of my seventh grade year to the year I graduated. I don't believe I would've have gotten through high school without it. LOL!
Daria died after that accident when she tried to drive to her ex-friend Tom who let her down. The rest of the episode was about what would have happened if she had survived. But in very last 1-2 scenes of the episode they show Darias parents sadly looking at Darias tombstone "Daria: 1984-2001", this is where the series ends.
Daria didn't die, are you sure we are talking about the same series? Daria had a brief car accident, but it wasn't severe. You need to watch "Boxing Daria", to see what really happened.
There is a revised edition that was published in some few countries years ago where they changed the ending. What really happened is up to you,whatever version you prefer. I think they showed the date when Daria ran on MTV on the "tombstone", 1997-2001, maybe because the creators felt that MTV let the series die or canceled another season.
I read an interview with Glenn Eichler that said he didn't like pinning down the specific years that things took place in, so if that version exists it is either a fan-job or an executive-meddling ending, the creators of the series didn't make it.
imho, it was an unpublished directors-cut version. you cant fake the original voices and the graphics style. all movies and shows contain several scenes of the same situation but a different or similar outcome. usualy we do only see the parts that the director cut toghether which is like 50%. i think that they canceled the death-version, because they knew their show was canceled on MTV but they had an OK for a final movie. so actually darias death was the real ending.
Or it could have been a joke on the part of some cartoonists with what could be described as a sick sad sense of humor. I've never heard anything mentioned about it anywhere else, so I expect that is what it was.
Somehow, this ending makes me cry for two reasons. 1) That's how life really is, people go through seperate ways and living their own lives. 2) This is the series finale of Daria. *sniffles* I loved that show and still do.

@Davin1518 it was not about the bimbos, it simply had to end. no1 wants another simpsons with 20+ seasons that simply got boring for the old veterans.
the 2 movies were more than anyone could ask for, it had a really great ending.

i like the simpsons. its not boring its just.... dusty... i still have faith in the simpsons <3 i just miss mtv and muchmusic for what it used to be. shows people could relate to and most important of all... the amazing music and VJs who know who Pearl Jam and Incubus and who other great artists were and sometimes still are. TV seems to have gotten "blonder" am i wrong?

Especially with shows like the armies of Laguna Beach spinoffs and Jersey Shore clogging up the airways, the present MTV generation would look back at Daria now and get a headache each time one of the characters brought up a simple sociological or psychological observation.

@Lunatasma i agree but i am one of those new generations of mtv. not all of us like the jersey shore thing. buti have noticed that so much of what daria said is true and i just wish that they would put the show on again or put it on more mainstream stations so people can see their own ignorance but who am i to judge

@TheAileenAngel they did not cancel daria it just ended and she eventually had to move on. She couldn't stay as a senor in high school. but i love how they ended it. If they wanted though they could have took the series on to expose the corruption of college life. That would have been a thought. but you are right i am so tired of all these fake reality shows. No ones life is exciting all the time.

This show spanned from the end of my seventh grade year to the year I graduated. I don't believe I would've have gotten through high school without it. LOL!

Daria died after that accident when she tried to drive to her ex-friend Tom who let her down. The rest of the episode was about what would have happened if she had survived. But in very last 1-2 scenes of the episode they show Darias parents sadly looking at Darias tombstone "Daria: 1984-2001", this is where the series ends.

Daria didn't die, are you sure we are talking about the same series? Daria had a brief car accident, but it wasn't severe. You need to watch "Boxing Daria", to see what really happened.

There is a revised edition that was published in some few countries years ago where they changed the ending. What really happened is up to you,whatever version you prefer. I think they showed the date when Daria ran on MTV on the "tombstone", 1997-2001, maybe because the creators felt that MTV let the series die or canceled another season.

I read an interview with Glenn Eichler that said he didn't like pinning down the specific years that things took place in, so if that version exists it is either a fan-job or an executive-meddling ending, the creators of the series didn't make it.

imho, it was an unpublished directors-cut version. you cant fake the original voices and the graphics style. all movies and shows contain several scenes of the same situation but a different or similar outcome. usualy we do only see the parts that the director cut toghether which is like 50%. i think that they canceled the death-version, because they knew their show was canceled on MTV but they had an OK for a final movie. so actually darias death was the real ending.

Or it could have been a joke on the part of some cartoonists with what could be described as a sick sad sense of humor. I've never heard anything mentioned about it anywhere else, so I expect that is what it was.

Somehow, this ending makes me cry for two reasons. 1) That's how life really is, people go through seperate ways and living their own lives. 2) This is the series finale of Daria. *sniffles* I loved that show and still do.
P.S. The music was a great choice for the ending.
