  • @stringmeupscotty1 - there is the melody to consider also

  • lol xD he pasted it in the wrong part of the song xD

fail fail fail fail fail fail xD

  • @Thompsongast - thanks for that comment I bow down to your superior musical genius

  • Same chords? Coincidence. Same chords and Tempo? Coincidence. Same chords, tempo and melody? RIP OFF.

  • LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL

  • i think coldplay was influenced by satch and took a little bit of his song, hey im a guitar player and boston is my fav band and my music might sound a bit similar to theirs but wtf u cant really tell. dont get me wrong i love satch

  • different key hahahaha so it's easy you just have to change the key and it's another song... just that easy.

watch?v=YJWLfpOecyE&feature=channel put this at the end of the link this guy explains it pretty well

  • That's barely a hard riff to come up with. The song 'Silvertown Blues' (at 4:52) by Mark Knopfler sounds like Fleetwood Mac's 'Go Your Own Way' at 2:40. Many songs have resemblances.

And Viva La Vida is much better. =)

  • Die548forEGO said song is in a DIFFERENT KEY!!!

I do not understand that comment, so are you saying that I can release a version of 'Let It Be' by the Beatles and if I change the key from C to Bb it becomes a different song and i do nto have to pay royalties?!?!?!?

  • Joe made a dick move suing Coldplay........ its 3 CHORDS and Joe's song is in a DIFFERENT KEY!!!

  • @Die548forEGO it's a 4 chord progression actually, and the key is about the only thing different... same tempo, same meter... Shows what you know, and it was Coldplay who had to pay out to shut up Satch, so what does that tell you?

  • @DeadRedDominance

It is the same key signature.

  • 'If I Could Fly' by Joe Satriani was made well before 'Viva La Vida' . Joe spent ten years of his life on that song (obviously he made others durning then) so don't ever mock a guitar legend in his own right!

  • Cat Stevens wrote it decades before Satriani. Explain that.

  • Well it seems that Satriani has done a better job of it as I never knew there was an earlier artist.

  • Comment removed

  • this is only a fake,it's a mix between "If I could fly" of Joe Satriani and "Viva La Vida" of Coldplay

  • im tired of this history it dosen't make any difference at all!!!

  • did the videomaker seriously just call joe satriani a copycat?

    -.-

  • Unless Coldplay can travel back in time that would be a strange question to raise!

The entire point of this video is to ask the question, were Coldplay influenced by Joe Satriani?

  • @esthetichaos There's a hefty difference between you fumbling out something in your garage and someone spending months in a professionally accoutred music studio.

  • @DeadRedDominance What is your point? I chose not to pursue a career in music, if it is what you want to know. Satriani may well have spent months in a professional studio, it did not protect him from stupidity. It is shameful to sue for a melody that 'stick' naturally into a banal chord progression. There's nothing in there very 'signature'. Cats Stevens was also thought to sue Coldplay for the same song, "so what does that tell you?"

  • @esthetichaos I mean when someone backed by a huge conglomerate machine produces and publishes something 'original,' they go to great lengths to assure themselves that it is so, legally. It's a very different thing to say you came up with a 4 chord Greenday song without ever hearing it, than to publish that song and make millions globally from it. Satriani quite rightfully felt exploited, and that you can't seem to appreciate that he's protecting the sanctity of his creation is what's shameful.

  • @DeadRedDominance Ok, I understand what you mean.

  • @DeadRedDominance Shut the fuck up Neal!!!!!

  • @esthetichaos Neal has no point...he is on his period though...send yome tampons to Georgia State University

  • @esthetichaos Neal has no point...he is on his period though...send some tampons to Georgia State University

  • this is stupid it sounds similair but many songs sound similair and its only the chorus tht osunds like satrianis song slightly

  • pour petrol on coldplay and set them alight

    Because they SUCK

  • If I Could Fly was written before Viva La Vida ... how could Satch have copied them ??? and learn to spell

  • idiot coldplay copied satriani. joe made that song before coldplay

  • I remimber, calummorris1993 said this when a whole day before you did. Thxksyou for reminding me of corldplqay copying satcharmy though, I tend to are forgetful in your old age.

  • lay off the crack

  • are u my friends? thx fro yuor reply, this video is grood!

  • @Kakarotz Obvious troll is obvious.

  • In reading YouTube comments, it is clear that most people are completely brainless, clueless or incapable of formulating a coherent thought.

  • Overlapping songs? They would never jam together... This is stupid, but ad eye catcher alright, lol

  • lol different key!

  • not a bad vid....just a side note tho, satriani's song is in a different key, so try editing and see if u can get them both to be the same key so it flows a little better

  • .......just a side note tho, try visiting your local health centre and get your ears syringed

  • and what would this do for me?

  • @sirmattblack true.

  • Joe chorus actually goes with Coldplay's verse.

  • because the whole Coldplay song is 4 chords. Of course its gonna go with it

  • joe's riff goes with the verse of viva la vida's lyrics though, thats what 7d7e7f7 is trying to say i think...because it does

  • well thats what this whole thing is about

  • yeah but chris martin can't control the way he sings. it's different with a guitar. that was proved after John Forgerdy was almost sued for sounding like himself

  • yeah, but he was comparing the parts of the song that were'nt similar too each other and saying they we're

  • they should tour together . the guitar is nice and the coldplay one has little touches and the clever lyrics.

if you think they should drop the briefcases and do a live show do a plus on this

  • Joe should rip their asses of and sue for recovery...

  • or maybe joe should thank them because without coldplay, nobody would care about him. except for guitar geeks.

  • Hm, no he earns enough money with his G3 stuff, of course he doesn't sell records as britney spears, but he can live and does what he likes so whatever....

  • U fucking win.

  • Shut up dude, Joe Satriani was famous before coldplay ever way.

    Learn your stuff.

  • i know joe was famous first but who is bigger now?

joe also looses a lot of cred with the accusation.

the likeness is not very compelling.

also see: cat stevens. he thinks coldplay ripped his tune off too.

  • no shit coldplay is bigger now but that's because almost everyone just listens to shit. Why not listen to some music that isn't written by posers? Satriani, Zeppelin, Slipknot, Yngwie Malmsteen, and some other people that dont suck!

  • whoa... thats a lot of guitar rock!

why don't you throw some prince in there to show people you also dig a guy who can show a little sensuality ;-p

i'm not a big coldplay fan. i've listened to all of their albums and own most of them but... there is a lot of better music out there.

  • I'm just saying, Joe Satriani has more musical talent than coldplay.

    But that's my personal opinion.

If you want sheer musical talent, listen to yes.

  • i can't begin to tell you what i'd rather listen to. hehe... there is so much music out there and i don't like to discriminate. i listened to joe sat the other week... but this morning joy division. maybe later the pixies. cat stephens, m83, handsome furs, french kicks, von bondies, the kinks, david bowie...

  • just listen to yourself...

  • It be really cool if it didnt have the back tracks mixed.

  • That was great! Good mixing!

  • hahah nice

  • I like Satch and Coldplay. Wouldn't it be nice if they put the lawsuit aside and actually played something like this video? Too bad that isn't happening

  • joe satriani rules..

  • Coldplay needs to crawl around on their hands and knees with dog collars on asking Joe if he needs any of his guitars polished.

  • that sounds awesome but i think y would he sue over it he doesnt need the money but i guess coldplay is filthy rich too lol

  • it's not about the money, it's about what came out of your heart, your feelings, your creativity, something you worked on very hard and long..

  • Yeah, that very common chord progression and the finite number of notes you could play over it is definetely from his heart. There's no way anyone else could have made something that sounds similar. It must be copied. STFU YOU STUPID BITCH.

  • u no wat, i dont care if they "sound the same"

    they're both brilliant.

and actually this combination of the songs is awesum too :P

  • The publicity has probably raised the profile of both songs so no metter how it goes they both win to an extent

  • Joe Satriani rules!!!!

  • matched wrong parts and... you changed the pitch to make it fit better? FAIL!

  • Wow!

Being an asshole and... accusing him of pitch changes? FAIL!

  • wow gj matching the wrong parts retard

  • lol I was thinkin the exact same thing :P What an idiot

  • Queen vs Vanilla ice. Same situation same outcome.

  • really? i always thought vanilla ice knowingly sampled under pressure

  • if you ask me they ripped Joe

  • Oh hey, i didn't realize some one alraedy pointed this out on page 4 of comments

  • I really don't think joe is going to win the suit. It may drag out just because of the similarity in the songs, but in the end it will end up like vanilla ice vs. Queen. the beat in another bites the dust, and ice ice baby is exactly the same except, or so says Mr. ice, i very minor change made in the rythm. check it out if you don't belive me.

  • OMG!!!

Joe Satriani's melody in "If I Could Fly" is not HIS melody in the first place!!

He coped it from some 70's rock band...that hearts and vein song

its a really popular melody. its been used so many times before.

i dont see Satriani going very far with this court case...Music Plagarism is SOO HARD to prove in the judiciary system (my dads a lawyer, i know)

  • well i think coldplay are just a bunch of theiving bugers

  • Excuse my english but nobody knows that : I am the only writer of this song you know! Bingo

  • I wonder why people think. that just because someone isn't mainstream, that they are not important, or contribute to the music industry.

  • This clearly shows that Coldplay stole the song....The notes are EXACTLY the same during the chorus....Coldplay will loose this suit, hands down.

  • well, lets hope so. it'd take more than a youtube video mash-up for joe to win this case in court, unfortunately. there are a couple videos on youtube about the music theory side of it, which I highly recommend for further knowledge of the musical side of this case.

  • This mix rocks...Coldplay and Joe should come to an agreement and release this version...Gold for sure..

  • well you know, i strongly dislike coldplay

    but

i dont think they would do it intentionally.

like i remember i was just playin guitar one day.

then i came up with this little thing that sounded pretty great...

then one day i heard this song on the radio

and it was almost EXACTLY what i was playing :P

    stuff like that happens alot

  • SlashRocks145

What you described is called Cryptomnesia when you sub consciously plagiarize someone else's music It is very common, As i recall when Paul McCartney was writing yesterday he went around asking people if they heard the melody of Yesterday because he heard it in a dream.

So you may have a point.

  • yeah, but joe has a better case than in your situation, because I hear the guitarist of coldplay's a HUGE satch fan. that being said, that could be used either way, depending on how you read it.

  • I hope Satriani gets 100% of the cash Coldplay has earned.

  • Obviously the song came out years ago, in 2004, and got nowhere.

    - Now Satriani can "hey, I wrote that song for Coldplay"...

    - Satriani made a name. I Never heard of this guy before.

    - Actually Satriani should play Coldplay for his promotion...

... But Gosh... A best song of the year Grammy? that sucks man. Satriani should change agents..

  • "Satriani made a name. I Never heard of this guy before."

Just because you live under a rock, doesn't mean that Satriani is not one of the most famous guitarists of the past two decades.

Still, I think he's an idiot for suing over this. Music plagiarism, even this blatant, can easily happen by accident. The PR damage from suing is not worth it, IMO. I lost a little respect for Joe over this, he just doesn't seem as cool, like when Metallica gotta militant over filesharing.

  • what are you guys on about? Yes, there are only 12 notes in music, so sooner or later somebody's gonna come across the same melody/harmony, but that doesn't mean that its a silly reason for suing. Also I think you people are thinking about the money too much; obviously Joe's concerns are with the fact that somebody stole his piece, and in fact, his suing is admirable in many ways, because coldplay are a huge band, and most likely could easily beat him in court; he's doing it because of princple.

  • PR damage? Remember the golden rule of entertainment. Any publicity is good publicity. IT does not matter what people are talking about, as long as it's about you. Perhaps Satch did this so publicly because coldplay forced his hand. I do not know, I am just speculating. I personally feel it's very plagiarized. Of course, at what point do you stop considering imitation to be flattery, and sue over it.

  • I guess that's the point where it stops being about the music, and starts being about the money.

  • "at what point do you stop considering imitation to be flattery, and sue over it"

At the point that you think it was intentional, unless you're a douche, or want to be perceived as a douche, or just *really* need the money (which Joe doesn't).

As for "any publicity is good", I don't accept. I stopped paying for anything Metallica related after they starting suing fans. That's not rock and roll, no matter how legally in the right they may have been.

  • the drums of coldplays in my place was very similar to that of led zeps when the levee breaks, why didnt led zep suit them then. obviously ppl are influenced by others and music is taken from various bands. In the grunge seen to me everyone sounds like nirvana now, there are only small dissimilarities. this about joe suiting coldplay is only due to the fact that the song became so famous.

  • agree.

  • I like both songs, and, sure, they are a bit similar but i don't think they copied it You just can't combine notes in an endless amount of ways and sometimes it's got to sound similar to another song.

  • PPETRUCII FUCK YOU ive seen you on every fuckin video, your a headless, dickless piece of shit and i dont like you. they didnt copy shit. if coldplay copied them then joe copied so many others fuck you

  • mmmm no

  • yeah, no.. you're wrong.. satch's been around for quite a long time.. you're obviously a coldplay fanboy, and im not gonna lie, coldplay sucks.,.

  • hahaha....

  • this song sounds a lot cooler when joe fades in to it.

  • it could be a coincidence

  • JOE SATRIANI!

  • Sorry Copyplay...no grammy!!!

  • way to alter the satch melody douche-fag

  • ColdShit is a group of headless Fags

    FUCK YOU COLDSHIT!!!

  • i dont think joe will win this one because of what you said and the fact they are on different keys also you may not know this but led zeppelin and them were very good friends with barry and they still are im not trying to attack i like the song but i heard viva la vida before because i had nevere heard of joe before nothing agaisnt him or nothin

  • i wrote a song one time, and then a few months later i heard a song in a vietnamese restraunt that was almost note for note my song... this kind of thing happens more often than you think...

  • cold play copied joe satriani how could it be an accident they sound exacly the same

  • i think it sounds better lol

  • I heard this Coldplay song on the radio today, Lovers in Japan. I picked up on the background music and it made me think of a song from 12 years ago, Creed by Rich Mullins and I was so excited that Creed was on the radio...then I realized it was not Creed but Coldplay. I like the song. Check it out and see if you think the background is similar.

  • kinda. they both have the pulsating synth thing going.

way to bring up rich mullins. whether you like Christian music or not, rich was an awesome musician, as well as arranger. it's sad to know he's gone. i saw mitch mcvicker about a year ago. he's the guy that finished rich's last album. when rich died the album wasn't finished yet, so mitch finished t for him.

  • Well, that's an unfortunate issue. It might have been a mistake, but if not, then Coldplay deserves their lawsuit. I hope Satch tried being nice first, because I woulda given them the benefit of the doubt and contacted them beforehand.

  • He did. He called them first, to ask them. They hung up on him.

  • That clears up a lot, then. A good, long, drawn out legal-battle will teach Coldplay a lesson or two. Especially if Satch wins.

  • how did you know?

  • there's like only 12 chords in total isn't there? Which means thats there's a certain number of combinations. Coldplay's song is one chord different than Joe Satriani's, and the majority of the combinations will have one chord difference, or one chord out of order. So, out of the billion songs written this was bound to happen, eventually. AND i beleive there was another song out before "if i could fly" called frances limon but joe does have reason to be angry cause a simalar song made millions

  • Your an idiot first of all. There are hundreds of chords. (Maybe more) There are 12 notes that can be used in combination. But when you have 4 out of hundreds of chord at the EXACT same tempo, in the exact same key, with the exact same rhythm. Coldplay has nothing to stand on.

  • oh duh, that was an accident but still there are lots of songs that still have the same chords. this has happened before but no one really cared.

  • Coldplay's vocal lead was note for note with Satch's guitar lead. The only difference in the song was a single chord in the chord progression, which really wasn't different. It is also in the exact same tempo. Same rhythm. The chords are strummed at the exact same time in each song.

There hasn't been many songs this close. And even for the ones that did sounds a little close. How do you know it wasn't stolen?

  • Coldplay are f*ckin THIEFS!

  • I don't find the, too similar. I mean, Joe Satriani was all, "I heard this and I was heartbroken, it sounded exactly like my song.." or something of the like. They're different, okay? Maybe like someone in another video said, they heard it in a taxi and it got stuck in their heads.

  • I still love the song Viva la Vida no matter what XD

  • ... wow man. I'm sure there are a lot of songs that you could do this with. There are only so many ways to fit together chords and notes, and there's SO MUCH music in the world, and so much more coming in. The likelihood a similarity like this will occur is off the charts. At least it isn't note for note. I'm sure it was not at all intended, Coldplay has a lot of talent and could easily do their own thing without ripping off of someone else's work.

  • coldplay doesnt write their songs. ppl do it for them.

  • the funny thing is... it is almost note for note. watch both creative guitar studio's video. it explains the theory behind both songs.

i don't think coldplay did it intentionally. i'm a huge fan of theirs. their arrangements are awesome. the fact is, both songs are incredibly similar.

  • I did watch both, and what I'm saying is, they ARE written differently, even if according to the theory he explains here they might as well be the same. I wasn't trying to dog on the statement he's making, he's entirely right and very educated on the matter. As far as coldplay not writing their own songs, many popular artists have help nowadays, but from what I've found, Chris Martin writes his own lyrics. Either way, they're still amazing :)

  • i agree. plus if you take away the music his voice is still epic.

  • yeah me too... they got this catchy melody thing in most of their songs... but saint joe has a strong case... and i vouch for him... he is also a music and a guitar instructor so he knows what he's doing...

  • hmm coincidence imo...

  • There is a similarity, although you can hear that it doesn't really quite match.

  • yea i agree with sirmattblack

i thought i found a coldplay song i like when i heard about the the court cases thing i was like OMG the only coldplay song i like and they stole it of joe satriani one of my favorite guitarists

  • Saw an iterview with CP and they admitted they all brought different cd's in when they were writing Viva La Vida to expand their sound. Guess Satriani's stuff made his way in there too...

  • They admitted listening to CD's? That's all the proof I need.

  • dude pretending to be r-tarded aint cool

  • A quote from an article on line - the fact that the video mashing up both videos had actually altered to make them sound alike, and if you listened to the originals, they were not nearly as close...Cat Stevens song Love/Heaven from (at least) 1973 that sounds quite similar as well...Or there's the song Hearts by Marty Balin of Jefferson Starship... written in 1981. Or any of the other dozen or so songs...

  • haha dont tkae this too seriously... I am not submitting this to a court of law....it is just for people to make their own judgements a bit of fun. Legally there have to be so many notes in a row etc.....what the courts decide will not change peoples personal opinion.

  • Heres my opinion. I think Satriani is jealous of Coldplays popularity and is grasping as straws. The only one going to make out here is the lawyers, who are truly laughing their way to the bank - literally.

  • Probably just comes down to money....Satriani seen Coldplay make a fortune with what he percieves to be his idea so he wants a slice of the cake. Not sure how it works but Coldplay did the lyrics so even if they lose they may get half the publishing money?? If nothing else the whole thing will boost Joe Satriani sales as well as Coldplay as everyone is talking about it

  • Remember when Vanilla Ice changed one note on Under Pressure for his big hit "Ice Ice Baby"? - He lost the case and had to fork over 100% of the royalties to David Bowie, plus paid damages. If Coldplay loses, they'll lose big.

  • the only thing that is changed is the key. the melody isn't actually altered. he's not suing because they used the same key, but that they used the same melody.
