  • whats the track playing i love it?...must have been changed as its defo not radiohead street spirit (fade out) as people keep being told...great vid..thanks for sharing x

  • i've seen cornwall way bigger than that

  • Wow the size of them waves!

  • any one up for surving :)

  • In Britain We Have Hurricanes, Earthquakes And Everything Aswell As Other Countries, Hope Everyone Is Safe When Hurricane Katia Hits!

  • You can get the tail end of hurricanes here the are classed as tropical storms...... And before you go on about it being impossible do to cold sea the storm system brings the heat with us ..... As this weekend Scotland will be getting the tail end of hurricane katia downgraded to tropical storm

  • it was the remnants of what USED to be a hurricane. Hurricanes are indeed impossible on british shores due to cold sea water temperatures.

  • YOU DON'T GET HURRICANES IN THE UK! Winter storms, yes, but not true hurricanes as they need tropical air to form.

Most storms in the UK are a result of low pressure systems from across the Atlantic.

  • @TehOwchies I f you'd paid attention, you'd have seen this was "the tail end of Hurricane Gordon" which, according to the Met office and media reports, it was. This means that the weather system was a full hurricane where it formed far west in the Atlantic, but then petered out as it travelled east towards old Blighty. All the news reports at the time built our expectations, which is why I say at the end (6m 06s) that it was an anti-climax.

  • @MadamMiaow Don't patronise me, I do understand your description!!!

I'm not an idiot. I was responding to other ignorant people who have posted here proclaiming that this was a hurricane. People like SavageGreenMachine for example.

  • @TehOwchies Actually you do. They're just very rare, the same with tornadoes and big earthquakes. For the hurricane to happen, the tropical air is pushed over from the west, it is near to impossible for one to form over the UK, but the hurricane can make it's way towards it.

  • @TehOwchies yes you do the last one was 1987 and Katia has to hit by tuesay

  • @TehOwchies There's a hurrcane coming to the UK expcted tomorrow night. Check the news ;)

  • @TehOwchies Epic fail for you, hurricane katia is on its way to the uk monday, it doesnt matter they cant be formed here, but they form , then come over . I'm in a part of the uk where winds expected to be up to 80mph. So looing forward to this no hurricane in uk theory.

  • lol ni live in cornwall n i rember this well i went surfing n that looks tiny compared wid conny etc next time u rite somehing make sure ur correct as thats just embarrasing for cornwall

  • Guess ho went surfing?

  • WOOOOW, that's amazing!! I love big waves... wonderful video, if it wasn't for the music... personally I found it a bit stressing... what about "Storms in Africa", by Enya...?

    Anyway, thank you for sharing!

  • Lol I have seen Porthmeor with bigger swell than that in the past. never mind the numerous other beaches that get bigger than that most of the winter. Why even try to claim it's some of the biggest waves in Cornwall just embarrassing...

  • man, i was living in devon (on the south coast) in a carvan when that hurricane hit, it was fucking crazy! it lasted about 3 nights, and on the first day when it was a little calmer, i went down to the beach (lyme) and the first thing i saw was a dead dogfish, about a meter long, that had been blown up onto the beach. but the weirdest thing was a guy out past the breakers trying to surf! i asked the coast gaurd what his chances were of getting rescued and he said 'nil'! good times!

  • English hurricanes are usually a weaker version of American hurricanes, they hit the Carribean, go up the eastern seaboard of the UK and cross the Atlantic. When they cross the Atlantic they can wind up again over the waters, however they rarely turn up as severe due the cooler waters meaning we don't get the cyclogenesis that the Carribean does.

However, we also get home-grown Atlantic storms from Greenland/Iceland, which are often worse than remnants of hurricanes, at least for us.

  • yes we do get hurricanes in england there just not that bad

  • @LemonCurt

We dont get hurricanes in the UK we get "tail end" of hurricanes which basically means storms that where hurricanes but have weakened to just ordianary deppressions! Most of our biggest storms are just European Wind Storms which are big areas of low preassure formed over the north-atlantic, hurricanes form in the tropics and have a fully developed eye at the centre of the storm!

  • do you have hurricanes in england?!?!?!?!?!?!

  • @mkvalya And earthquakes.

Actually this was the tail end of Hurricane Gordon as it blew itself out heading east over the Atlantic..

  • @mkvalya There was one in 1988 and it struck in the south east coast many were killed.

  • @mkvalya Actually, we Dont have Hurricanes, And Earthquakes are rare.

  • @mkvalya It basically is just the clouds and left over wind and rain that has come across by this time the hurricane is basically dead. x'D We just get really high winds.

  • @mkvalya Strictly speaking, No - a hurricane only breeds over tropical oceans & cant survive in the cold north atlantic, however we do get fierce extratropical high latitude storms occassionally which do cause a bit of damage and flooding, the winds in our storms are no where near that of a full blown hurricane, for example, in 1992 hurricane andrews peak winds reached 175mph, while its not that often here they exceed 115mph

  • Awsome video, ive never seen the tide that high and strong on Porthmeor

  • Born and bred in Cornwall, arrgg there just baby waves, hey go down to Sennen or Zennor, in heart of winter and see real waves..lol.... Love the tune tho..

  • i live in cornwall in st blazey a place near par or st austell

  • kąp się hahahahahahahahahahahaha

  • Awesome - love the beach barbie ! Great soundtrack as well. I've seen several of your posts and am well impressed. Keep them coming please. Have you filmed up at Port Isaac ? CJ.

  • brilliant video

  • Wow!you are so lucky to live there. We go on holiday to cornwall quite regularly, and unfortunately have never seen the sea in a really wild state.Weve been to Mousehole several times at Christmas which is great, and we love St Ives. Thanks for posting, bring lovely memories back.

  • I love the Radiohead track but music biz is now getting heavy regarding copyright. The YouTube community is under threat of having our entire channels deleted if three companies complain.

  • Here, what the hell happened to the original score of Street Spirit by Radiohead? Doesn't matter, I will rip the vid, add the original sound and repost it. Simples!

  • They Would be beast waves to surf, going down this sat, can't wait :D

  • WTF? HURRACNE??? THIS IS THE UK, NOT USA UK. ITS JUST A STORM DUMBASS

  • @scienceboy639 Don't worry, it's just anther stupid American. Nothing to see here...

  • can someone tell me hows the life in st ives, im planing to move there with my gf in a near future, we got opportunitie but so far looks like a smal village, with 10k ppl, where theres not much to do and looks so sad... i wud like some feedback of u guys who live there pls

  • can someone tell me hows the life in st ives, im planing to move there with my gf in a near future, we got opportunitie but so far looks like a smal village, with 10k ppl, where theres not much to do and looks so sad... i wud like some feedback of u guys who live there pls

  • @RedLifeBenfica Perhaps you'd be better off living in a city as it sounds like you get bored pretty easily. St. Ives certainly isn't dull, but it's for people who prefer a quieter, slower pace of life. It's a favourite with artists. If you need lots of entertainment and "things to do" then stick to a city. I don't think places like St. Ives are for you.

  • can someone tell me hows the life in st ives, im planing to move there with my gf in a near future, we got opportunitie but so far looks like a smal village, with 10k ppl, where theres not much to do and looks so sad... i wud like some feedback of u guys who live there pls

  • beautiful video. thanks :)

  • I used to live in Newlyn. I'm an artist and moved down there to draw and paint the landscapes. It's many years ago now, but I have nostalgic memories of the beauty of the landscapes that I will never forget.

    Thanks for posting!

  • This is one of the most wonderful and evocative vids on youtube...

  • To be snuggled up in the Sloop on a day like that!

  • I popped down to St Ives on Tuesday, walked to the end of Smeaton's Pier and it was really freezing cold, soaking wet and blowing a gale and the sea was spectacular. I retreated to the Sloop to dry off at the fireside and contemplate the storm-lashed harbour from the window over a pint of stellas. Bliss!

  • @randomdave30 And now you've just made me homesick. A pint of Rattlers and the sea ...

  • Rattlers? Perhaps not. I love watching the sea in all weathers and especially when there is a storm. It's all the balance of nature at work and it's all spectacular.

  • @brandybuck1984 bliss my friend bliss.

  • on the 8th day ....god made cirnwall ....wicked kez

  • Britain never gets hurricanes. the closest we ever came was the Force 11 storm that hit the south east on 16 October 1987 during which sustained wind speeds of 70mph and gusts of 110+mph were recorded. To see the power of a real hurricane, look up 'Hurricane Georges Puerto Rico'

  • cobh8crew2009,

Not correct! The highest sustained winds during the 87 storm were 70 mph along sections of the coasts of Sussex and Kent ie Force 11 - but you are correct that it was not a hurricane. Anyone who wants to see the power of a hurricane should look up 'Hurricane Georges Puerto Rico'.

  • @GoodTimeGeorge3 And that's why I described it as the "tail end" of Hurricane Gordon, which is what it was.

  • In fact George the low pressure that hit Cornwall in the 80's gave an average sustained windspeed of 98 mph, this didnt get as much news cos it never hit the capital

  • who sings this song?

  • Nice film. I was also a tad disappointed when Gordon didn't deliver in the way we expected. I was surfing Gower and it got good but no way epic. One of the few times Magic Seaweed got it wrong too.

  • Thanks, Biscuit Media. The air was heavy with expectation. We were all standing around waiting for the Big Storm to hit but we only got the end bit. Although that's lucky for the poor locals who get flooded every time the weather plays up.

  • when hurricane gordon came near the uk, it was classified as an extratropical cyclone, essentially a hurricane but allot less powerful as it didn't have the warm seas. you can get extratropical cyclones as far north as greenland.

  • Cheers, TVV. Thanks for the explanation. It was an anti-climax when it reached us as the build-up in the press had been so intense. But it was still exciting to know this was the shuddery tail end of something that must have been massive when it started. And the waves weren't half bad.

  • those are great waves for england but we get that size in australia often but still great waves great vid

  • I love this video, its so beautiful, i love stormy seas, I don't have a camera otherwise I would post some of the fantastic waves we get here dueing typhoons!! i am in Japan!!

I love the song too, who sings it??

  • whats this song called??

  • Just had 2 great weeks in Kernow, back in Liverpool now {damn} Stayed in Hayle and caught the end of hurricane Bill. The waves at Portreath were much bigger, if anyone is unaware and visiting cornwall check out Cape Cornwall, awesome place!

  • we stay in hayle aswell at tolroy manor we have house there where u stay?

  • Always the old part of St Ives. But we never go in the high season as it gets crowded and fractious (apart from being too expensive).

  • I prefer to experience St Ives outside the holiday season. Same with Penzance.

  • these arnt big waves..?

  • porthmere beach in st ives is always shit tho wen tide is in it surfs so much better when tide out infact very rarely surfs when tide is in !

  • Then how do you explain the great storm of 1703 and 1987?

  • Go jump in the lake, vids: Big Ass Waves!, Eastern Lake Ontario wind storm, Lake Michigan Waves, Lake Superior Winter Storm Footage, 4/11/08-Random Acts of Foolishness as Lake Superior Growls, Lake Superior Storm, Big waves on The Big Lake, lake michigan 2/15/08, Winter Ice on Lake Michigan, Great Lake Swimmers, Lake Superior Storm, The Turtle Club - Penis Shrinkage Competition 2005

  • We dont get the actual hurricane its self but we get all the wind and stuff from it if it misses America and goes the wrong way. Also we get Atlantic winter storms which are sort of the same thing but cold not warm and are much less frequent and often less powerful. :)

  • yh big 5ft waves :O on that beach by st michaels mount there are 16ft waves! i used to surf there when i was 6. there not big at all! and about 7 years ago there was the tail of a tornado in angarrak, (halye) btw i cant spell since im 12 lol

  • Not true!!

  • shame about that horrible "wrist slashing" music, i muted it so i could enjoy the video.

  • I love the horrible wrist slashing music. The video's alright too.

  • freak..

  • radiohead btw

  • Are they supposed to be big?

  • music not muse

  • lol was biger than that yesterday on the north cornish coast..

  • not trying to disrespect your video, but thats a ridiculous comment to make, looks like an average september swell

  • Compared to the waves here(California), those are nothing. But, I'll take your word for it, that those are big for you. Despite the waves, it looks like a lovely place.

  • trust me there are waves way way way bigger than that in cornwall

  • Course there are. Look at a YT vid called

THE LEGENDARY CRIBBAR just for a kick off - that was taken up the coast at Fistral. No disrespect to the original poster, who I'm sure meant waves in that particular place or to nrlsky, who was only reponding to the description, but the most frustrating thing about words like the ones used in the video is when Australians/Californians/Hawaiians etc say "oh thats NOTHING compared to what we have"0. OK, its not Hawaii but its not a millpond in either.

  • That's not even that big by Porthmeor standards. There are much bigger waves around Cornwall and Devon, but u need a jet-ski. And im sure I remember seeing lots of clips of Malibu at 1-2ft lol.

  • 'Some of the biggest waves ever seen in cornwall'?! Not by a long shot, but admittedly porthmeor was pretty damn good that day.

  • I deeply love St Ives... Very good video!

  • I LOVE Cafe Pasta !

  • Them waves wer crap ive swam in bigger waaii bigger but good vid

  • those are some of the smallest cornish waves ive ever seen

  • That really is no where near bad weather LOL. The waves are tiny and it ain't even windy.

  • Wicked song,I love Muse.Wouldn't use it for holiday video though.Went for a drink in St.Ives once, found all the pubs to be full of "been there done that" mancs and mockney "locals".Haha what a joke.Read the works of John Angarrack for the truth.

  • that was wkd.. looks like the wind was blowing the waves back on themselves.. the music is radiohead street spirit.. not muse x

  • its not muse its radiohead

  • i went out surf kayaking that day.. that really was quite painful ;)

  • nice vid!!! them waves looked wicked!

  • who was that nutter having a bbq lolx

  • the waves were fucking mental that day

  • Love St Ives!

  • love it

  • local legend says that St.Ives is the gateway to hell and when the day comes, the town will be sucked into the earth to release arrmagadden. Revelations:1:22

  • ...agree with the fact that Cornwall is 2 overcrowed with tourists in the summer. Bumper to bumper traffic to get anywhere is not my idea of fun.

  • OMG im going there this saturday!!!!

  • Wow, I had no idea you got Hurricanes in England too!

  • And, very rarely, tornadoes and earthquakes, too.

  • @MomOfSailorOnUSSKH well we kind of dont we get the end of the weather systems, because hurricanes have to form over waters of 27c and we definatly dont have water that warm !!

  • anyway by the way, its a great video. Some really cool filming!

  • The waters in the habour were quite rough considering its fairly sheltered in there. You wouldn't epect big waves around some of the bays in st Ives anyway because they are quite sheltered and don't look directly out to the atlantic. I expect there were probably some big waves on the west coast, like sennen (white sands bay)?

  • There was a video someone posted that they'd taken at around the same time in Penzance. The waves were much higher and breaking right over the sea wall. So, yes, there's quite a discrepancy in conditions.

Makes you realise how St Ives is nearer perfection than anyone suspected now that we can see how sheltered it is.

  • i guess everyone knew already that stives was close to pefection, since they built a harbour there to shelter the boats from the millions of lows that track over each winter? nice video! can't agree that those waves are anything close to the biggest seen in cornwall though - i think you must have seen it much bigger many times! nice second song on the video

  • St Ives is too crowded and To be honest not very pleasing. If you want to go somewhere disent go a bit up the road to a town called Hayle its complete pardise

  • haha

you made me laugh so much

  • wts this song called any 1 ???

  • Radiohead street spirit

  • I am back at St Ives again next week, I hope for better wether but it is always nice to have at least one stormy day.

  • love St.Ives, that to me is Cornwall at it's best.... roll on July and i'll be there!!!

  • i just got back from here and the beach in st ives i went to was a real mess, bottles wrappers all over the place.Up the road in Hayle was perfect, really nice.Whats gone wrong in st ives???

  • That's such a pity. Which beach?

I do know that, for the first time in years, dogs are allowed on the St Ives beaches during the summer, in the evening. So after 7pm the beach is filled with dogs and their owners, none of whom carried a plastic bag — and we were watching carefully!

No-one I spoke to was happy with this especially as there's been no consultation over the change in the rules that anyone had heard about.

  • i live there too! that day was odd lol

  • that day was crazy

  • ginsters pastys are so bad they dont qualify as pastys

  • fuck the surf i want a gingsters pasty.

  • great video, great music, captures the mood perfectly. Just returned from another holiday in "my" beloved St Ives. Can't get enough of it. Was stormy this time as well :-)

  • Hello MadamMiaow,Thanks for posting, this is a great video, and great music choice!!We always try to come to cornwall for a week or two each year,It has a magic about the place! We spend loads of time in the sea, weve traveled around the world a bit,but love corwall. We live inland, only 30 minutes from weston super mare !But miss Cornwall so bad,i manage to tell myself that you would get bored of the sea(Mind Tricks). Please could you tell me if you do???Be honest!!Im on verge of selling up!!

  • I live there too...

...and yes, you do get very bored of it.

    NOT ENOUGH SHOPS!

    =]

  • hey i live there too, it gets boring when there is no surf, but when its stormy it fun to watch!! x x

  • sick vid

  • ud have 2 be som kook 2 surf out der...is crap howlin offhore surf

  • actually it was alright that day. far from perfect with the winds, but this is cornwall, not indo.

  • actually it was pretty fun that day. far from perfect, but this cornwall, not indo!

  • I remember it very well!!!

  • haha i like the end script. Was no-one surfing this shit??

  • Yes, Alistair, there were. If you check out the footage from 3:04 to around 3:12, you'll see quite a few surfers making the most of it.

  • what year was hurricane gordon

  • Hi Brett, this was September 2006.

  • Thank's. MadamMiaow.

  • hi madam wen i was on my holiday u no the great white shark scare? i was sat on the beqach that day but on bbc spotlight we found out about it. it was really cool st ives and the surfers own!

  • best place to live

i take photos all the time of the sea

i would not live anywhere else

  • Why would anyone want to live anywhere else in

    England?I love it!!!

  • Great video. I love Cornwall in the winter with all the hiden beauty and character that you never see in the summer. The tourists never get to see its true charm =]

By the way Cornwall is not and has never been in England (refering to your "about this video" section)

  • great vid - love being by the sea when it's rough.. never had a BBQ at same time though!

    must try that sometime.

  • Are there hurricanes in England? I know they do not hit directly England, only the tail, the rest of the Hurricane then hits Europe?

  • England is not in Cornwall quite yet.....

  • nice day for a bbq. Mebyon Kernow.

  • you dont wish you where here now its horrible lol the weather was like this on sunday but all you could see for ages was whitewash x

  • I loooove St Ives..want to be there NOW!!!!!!Great film.

  • why would you have a house so close to the water

  • because they was built as fishermens homes

  • excellent - just got back from st ives - hoped for a storm but no luck - watched your video instead - beautifully filmed, music ............. mmmmmmmmmmmm

  • Really enjoyable, Radiohead was a great choice for soundtrack too, cheers.

  • Apologies that some extremely intemperate comments slipped through, so I'm deleting anything that insults anyone.

  • sorry... nice vid

which loony was having a barbie in a typhoon?!

  • thats like backwash in australia lol .

  • looks cold man

  • Is it too much to ask for a reasoned debate on my YouTube pages so that we can all learn something instead of trading insults? I'm now moderating comments so if you want yours approved, please have some respect for each other ... and for me.

  • i bet cyril didnt sell any seal island tickets that day :D haha

  • wats the second song??

  • whats the name of the song?

  • Where else in the UK can you identify an indigenous territorial group having its national identity, status, constitution repressed, denied and lied about by the State and media.

This results in a lack of knowledge about the Duchy, its history and language.

It also leads to a lack of tolerance.

    Enjoyed the vid. Keep smiling.

  • Another notable example is Gaspard de Coligny Chatillon - the French Ambassador in London, who wrote saying that England was not a united whole as it 'contains Wales and Cornwall, natural enemies of the rest of England, and speaking a different language.'

  • Cornwall=England. End of. Thank you.

  • Historically Cornwall was certainly recognised as separate: The Italian scholar Polydore Vergil in his famous Anglica Historia, published in 1535, wrote that:

'the whole Countrie of Britain ...is divided into iiii partes; whereof the one is inhabited of Englishmen, the other of Scottes, the third of Wallshemen, [and] the fowerthe of Cornishe people, which all differ emonge them selves, either in tongue, ...in manners, or ells in lawes and ordinaunces.'

  • But in the contemporary sense it is. If we are prepared to go back a few hundred years, we could argue in turn that Australia and India are still part of our Empire. It may have been seperate historically but not any more =)

  • Cornwall is in England that is all Bobmonkfish does on you tube is look for references concerning Cornwall and England he has never contributed to Youtube but just wants to annoy people with his stupid comments saying Cornwall is not English!

For goodness sake boy get a life you are a stupid proud idiot who probably still lives at home with his mummy!!

  • Trelawny (Furv Gernewek) in Cornish ;) Gans cledha da yn dorn yu lel Gwyr, lowen an golon Yth aswon Myghtern Jamys fel Pandr'wrello Kernowyon Yu ordnys le ha prys ancow? Trelawny dos dh'y fin? • Trelawny A good sword and a trusty hand, A merry heart and true! King James's men shall understand What Cornish lads can do. And have they fixed the where and when? And shall Trelawny die? Then twenty thousand Cornish men Will know the reason why! And shall Trelawny live? Or shall Trelawny die? Here's twenty thousand Cornish men Who'll know the reason why.
  • funny how it only ryhmes in English mate

  • The seagulls there are right buggers! they steal your "kellys" ice cream..They literally dive bomb into your food..the boat trips are cool though!

  • all you people that say cornwall isnt part of england why does the queen of ENGLAND rule it ? and our government rule it too ?? tell me tht please ?

  • Brilliant! cool music too. especially like how you have the sound of the wind and the music at the same time!

  • love it in kernow!its a lush country for holidays

  • i completely agree!

  • Sure not England (Britain if you like), but as a St Ives born and bred person I would like to say a good and interesting video.
