Ranka was a bit twisted, immature, and, it turns out, traitorous and evil. She was no Minmay (not even designed/drawn as well as Mikimoto's character), and rather a poor imitation. I'm surprised to find so many fanboys drooling over her. Sheryl was a more interesting character, and had some depth to her. Perhaps the fanboys are merely attracted to shallow, prepubescent characters?

The VF-171 is the main variable fighter used by the New U.N. Spacy in 2059. General Galaxy developed it from the VF-17 Nightmare(Macross 7) as a multipurpose heavy variable fighter. Since the VF-17 Nightmare proved difficult to mass-manufacture, the VF-171 has been comparatively downgraded.

Why mention the VF-171 at all, we never see one in Macross Frontier, we see the VF-24, VF-25 and VF-27, but no other Valkari moddles.

@dave19941000 The VF-171 was the planes that Alto and Luca were flying in this scene. There was no VF-24. There was the YF-24, but it was in blueprint form

Not exactly true, its like putting a F-15MTDS (Thrust Vectoring Type) Model against a State-of-the-art Model of the F/A -22A (F-22 Raptor current gen model) it won't perform as well and will lose due to the difference in technology over skill.

It has many meanings. The most reasonable one is that its a theory that ancient humans had alien influence. Zentradi or Vajia, I forgot, I need to watch Macross Zero again to remember the specifics.

Then there is the stupid definition from Robotech, stating that its a power source.

in short Protoculture is the advanced race that created the Zentradi and perhaps had a hand in the evolution of man. in robotech it was relegated to being a flower energy source aka flower power....see how dumb that pun was that's what happened to the philosophy of Macross when it was edited in America.

yes but for us (at the time) only viewed Macross as another cartoon and now that we understand the story better can appreciate what Macross is now that we older...not to mention since the word "protoculture" now has 2 meanings their can be 2 seperate stories

ah...this is true.However it was orignally an advanced race. There was no real reason for harmony gold to change the meaning like that. I feel they made that change to try to create their own series from Macross Gensis Climber and Southern Cross.I feel Americans would have loved all the series regardless because they had stories that were orginal compared to the standard animated storylines of that era.

at the time it was meant for kids not really adults and they had to weaken the story but I still pissed at Harmony Gold for holding the rights to Macross and not letting us see this epic anime here...they tried to make Shadow Chronicles which was weak but also more Macross...the only thing I life from Harmony Gold was the Robotech opening lol
