We support getting this film released. The politics behind not releasing it are incredibly disappointing and our hope remains that this film will be enjoyed legally in the US once again.
"I di'nt say it was YO laffin' place, this is MAH laffin' place!"
I love the way that line goes, he's a smart ass rabbit and darn proud, yessir.
So is this movie actually banned in it's entirity, or only in some states/countries? Cuz I remember watchin it like every easter as a kid, then it up and left and someone told me it was banned for some BS reasons.
@Gaz66d Well, it's not REALLY banned. Disney have just decided not to release it in America because it might spark possible controversy over its portrayal of blacks. Personally, I see nothing wrong with it. It has, however, been released in Europe. And, since I am British, I can legally own the film. And I do. I have it on VHS. If you really want to see it again that badly, there are some really expensive bootleg copies available in the US, but, as far as I know, the picture quality is awful.
I've never seen this movie, but grew up with one of the songs. When I was 9, I rode Splash Mountain. Took me till now (I'm 18, now) to figure out that Br'er Fox has a (excuse me, I can't put this any other way) black voice like Mushu does. And both of them are red. Mushu and Br'er Fox- if Br'er Fox was good, they'd be one heck of a Disney team.
We have the original 1946 classic, "Song of the South" on dvd including interview with Walt Disney on the creation of the movie. Only at Acme Sales and Books here in beautiful Savannah Georgia
Zippidy doo dah zippidy ay theres gonna be another drive by shooting today plenty of po lice headed our way and thats every day life in south central l.a. !!
Uncle remus was smoking his crackpipe one day and brer rabbit wanted to try it. Brer rabbit immediately shared it with brer bear whom was already high as fuck! But ole brer fox he thought that uncle remus was an undercover po lice man. So he lay low !
I read something interesting on the Disney Wiki. J. Pat O' Malley, a british actor and singer was actually considered to play the role of Brer Fox. He has done a few voice acting in other Disney movies, such as Colonel Hathi in Jungle Book, the Walrus in Alice in Wonderland, the king in Cinderella and Colonel and Jasper in 101 Dalmations.
It's a bit weird picturing Brer Fox with his voice after hearing some of his roles.
THIS IS NOT A RACIST MOVIE. If you wish to view the entire movie we have the original 1946 Song of the South on DVD, with an interview of Walt Disney himself on the creation of the film. Only at ACME SALES AND BOOKS only in beautiful Savannah, Georgia.

This is not racist. If you wish to view the full original 1946 movie with an interview with Walt Disney himself you can find it at ACME sales and books in beautiful Savannah, Ga
This movie is a classic piece of Americana! Uncle Remus was not a slave in this movie, he roamed freely wherever he wanted. We have the original 1946 "Song of the South" on dvd with an interview with Walt Disney on the creation of the movie. Only at ACME sales and books located in beautiful Savannah, Ga (912) 352-2203
I don't like racism, but I don't see anything racist in this. To me, it's just a cute and hilarious animated retelling of the Br'er Rabbit stories. Trust me; I've seen a lot of racist parts in films (such as the scenes with Prissy in Gone with the Wind), and they make me cringe.
My favorite Cartoon in the whole movie!!!! Little known fact While Johnny Lee was helping advertise the movie James Baskett provided the voice for Brer Rabbit in this cartoon I believe. I chould be wrong though =P But Baskett is impressive as Brer Fox and Remus in this movie!!!!!
now this movie would of been rascist if the kids weren't friends with Remus and everytime they saw him they would beat him up till he passed out fainted, whats anything with this movie is sweet and caring and there ain't anything bad in it
you'll find tons of rascist anywhere else besides this movie, i've seen so many rascist things on movies now a days, why aren't they banned DUMBFUCKS!
how can people say it's rascist, people are just stupid, people who are rascist of blacks were just talking making it seem like it and the blacks believed stupid jokes, just cause the way remus and the animals talk and that Remus was a slave, thats how it was back then it's just history, it doesn't happen no more if they freak of a disney cartoon movie mabey we should just ban everything in the USA that has to do with blacks even ban the history if them in schools.
Br'er Rabbit is kinda like a super hero, lol xD why don't they just kill him as soon as they catch him? why didn't the Joker just shoot Batman in the face once he got caught the first time? why doesn't Br'er Fox just chop off Br'er Rabbit's head and be done with it forever? but no...the villains ALWAYS insist on using sharks with frickin' laser beams attached to their heads =D
I see nothing racist in this movie. I wish Disney would release it on blu Ray with a nice making if documentary. I already have a bootleg copy of the film but I want to see it in all it's glory.
I was seriously thinking of Mice and Men too! the big, slow-witted giant being led around by the gangly, shrewd man...(or in this case, fox). Props for you!
How come the cartoon characters sound like fuckin' Amos and Andy?
That's not cool, Disney. I can tolerate Mammy, Prissy, and Pork because they were, in some aspects, progressive. But seriously? Black voices? I know it's to give authenticity to the voices - but society has changed.
Yeah - just hand this film to film students (or release it as a Criterion DVD - they've released some insulting stuff before *coughcoughsalocoughcough*). I don't want kids to rely on old and tired archetypes.
@JohnFordDanceTroupe The problem was that this movie takes place right after the civil war. Jesus the real racists are the politically correct bastards who want to forget people were actually like this. This movie had a great moral and it's thanks to a bunch of overly-sensitive asses that this movie is banned because it was accurate for the time frame.
As a kid I wanted to always watch this movie, but never did because my mom could never find it. When I got older, I found out it was taken off of shelves because of racism. And that just makes you wonder, what has this world come to?
Flame an old original movie made by Disney and to say it's racist? There's really not a whole lot of racism, unless you consider the voices of the characters racist. Just from watching this clip, I can tell this is nothing but a good old fashion kids movie.
@yourmomiskool69 Watch the whole film, it's all on here. It's not really got anything to do with the character's voices. The reason it's considered racist is because of it's unrealistic portrayal of plantation life - happy master/slave relationships, the slave's knowing their place and being grateful for it. I actually think that there's alot more to it than that. I loved this film as a kid, and I certainly didn't grow up thinking plantation life was one big party.
@FranBMan but some slaves where happy beacuse they were treated nicely and good it was rare but some slaves where treated like family!! if you have seen the pratiot or read some history books some slaves where not treated bad and loved plantation life i dont think this film is racist at all!! i lovv e this movie
While I would like Song of the South to be released, the pessimistic side of me says "ain't gonna happen!" I don't mean to sound cynical, but some things are just not meant to be, and maybe Song of the South getting released is one of them. It could happen one day, but I'm hoping with cautious optimism.
Ahh... the gentle loving wisdom of the spry old negro... It's so refreshing to hear innocence coming from a black person instead of all of that attitude and hate.
I'll tell you why the blacks don't like it... It's because the characters here (the fox, bear and rabbit) are made to SOUND and ACT like bona fide members of the black culture! Listen to that Southern black jibber-jabber! Same ghetto drawl as you can find today. If you dare go close enough to see!
@TerraceYouth Wait!! That southern jibber-jabber is 'black'? I'm from the South and I know a lot of WHITE folk who speak southern jibber-jabber. I always liked this show as it reminded me of my WHITE grandpa who told similar stories to all of us kids. He made voices to suit the characters. But I'm thinking he was more racist than this show as he only told stories to us WHITE kids. The old black gent is telling stories to white AND black kids. And I always thought he was happy just to be ALIVE.
Does anyone else notice that Brer Fox's tail gets very bushy around Brer Rabbit? Or that he speaks slowly around Brer Rabbit and *gasp* actually prais
This is a great film that I have enjoyed for years, and I have yet to see any racism in the movie, nor has any tight-sphinctered, bleading-heart leftist been able to point any out.
@ralphtheboyralphie Yep haha.. I wish you could somehow own this movie. I bought a Disney Brer rabbit catches the fox book from 1942 at an antique store and throughout the whole thing it uses the word negro. Disney likes to pretend this movie never exsisted.. hmmm I wonder why lol. Cool movie tho.. I like it.
@MattTheRipper88 I wouldn't have thought it was weird at all if you hadn't brought it up. That said, his face is way too far off to the right to really look weird.
@HeroPrinnyDood I'm trying. Disney always surprises me though with hidden sexual content though. I.E. Aladin, and the little mermaid. Look it up. You might educate yourself.
@RebelDJ08 Hahahahaa. It sounds to me, that the voice of Br'er Fox was inspired/homaged/ripped off (whichever applies) by/to/from the character of "Gabby", from the then popular "Amos 'N' Andy" radio show.
It's sad that they won't release it in the US because too many think it's racist, but when I was a child it was wonderful magical to be told a story by a gentle old man named Uncle Remus..... Now I have to find one for my collection, want grown son to see it and any grand kids I may get down the road.
@breeze19965 I was reading that Disney is planning on doing something positive with the film soon. So maybe finally releasing it OR putting it in theatres. But it was the CEO I think that said it needed to be accessible to the public since it is a big part of their history and the film is important.
This was a magical movie. Uncle Remus and Brer Rabbit are now among my all-time favorite characters. I can't help but laugh along with them!!! The gift of infectious laughter is very, very precious. :-)
I don't visit this site often - but someone asked why this is a classic although it was not well-recieved. Well, I come from a long line of - used-to-be racists. I grew up in the 1970's and when I married a black man my elders were unkind - then I reminded them of the things contributed to my upbringing. Song of the South was a minor thing - but it did well in illustrating that we all have much to learn from other cultures and served to show that all people have much the same worries.
@peedeepiesmom Well the only things that keep this movie alive is Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah, and all the characters for Splash Mountain. I can understand why people would find this racist, but I think it has much more to do with Uncle Remus' stories uplifting Johnny's spirits. Walt even strove to make sure James Baskett won the Honorary Oscar for his brilliant performance, and Baskett described Walt as "a friend in deed when we were in need."
Since we're on the subject, disneys mmorpgs will not allow you to say "black," but you can say blue, green, and WHITE! They'll also let you say crackers! I don't understand how one thing is offensive and it's equal not. Also I believe we should be called European Americans since very few white people have ancestors originating from the Caucasus region. Besides, most "African Americans" came to this country long before white peoples ancestors. Yes some of us may have ancestors from the 17th and
@peedeepiesmom How is it a classic?? No one liked it and even Walt himself hated it. This is definetely not on the classics list and there was a reason for it to be banned. Not just because of racism but there were other things that were wrong in this film. Don't flame me, it's true.

FranBMan 1 year ago

TerraceYouth 1 year ago
@TerraceYouth Wait!! That southern jibber-jabber is 'black'? I'm from the South and I know a lot of WHITE folk who speak southern jibber-jabber. I always liked this show as it reminded me of my WHITE grandpa who told similar stories to all of us kids. He made voices to suit the characters. But I'm thinking he was more racist than this show as he only told stories to us WHITE kids. The old black gent is telling stories to white AND black kids. And I always thought he was happy just to be ALIVE.

This is a great film that I have enjoyed for years, and I have yet to see any racism in the movie, nor has any tight-sphinctered, bleading-heart leftist been able to point any out.

Warner Brothers decided to release the Censored Eleven two months ago (October 2010).
It's true, I'm not pulling any shitty trick on you!
Let's HOPE Disney gets influenced by that! I'd love to see Disney hold another meeting about SOTS.

I like it.

@RebelDJ08 Hahahahaa. It sounds to me, that the voice of Br'er Fox was inspired/homaged/ripped off (whichever applies) by/to/from the character of "Gabby", from the then popular "Amos 'N' Andy" radio show.

Splash Mountain dates from the 90's.

It's sad that they won't release it in the US because too many think it's racist, but when I was a child it was wonderful magical to be told a story by a gentle old man named Uncle Remus..... Now I have to find one for my collection, want grown son to see it and any grand kids I may get down the road.
breeze19965 1 year ago
@breeze19965 I was reading that Disney is planning on doing something positive with the film soon. So maybe finally releasing it OR putting it in theatres. But it was the CEO I think that said it needed to be accessible to the public since it is a big part of their history and the film is important.

I don't visit this site often - but someone asked why this is a classic although it was not well-recieved. Well, I come from a long line of - used-to-be racists. I grew up in the 1970's and when I married a black man my elders were unkind - then I reminded them of the things contributed to my upbringing. Song of the South was a minor thing - but it did well in illustrating that we all have much to learn from other cultures and served to show that all people have much the same worries.
peedeepiesmom 1 year ago

Yes some of us may have ancestors from the 17th and

peedeepiesmom 1 year ago
@peedeepiesmom How is it a classic?? No one liked it and even Walt himself hated it. This is definetely not on the classics list and there was a reason for it to be banned. Not just because of racism but there were other things that were wrong in this film. Don't flame me, it's true.

@boffinme80 What about Walt hating "Peter Pan"? He thought Pan wasn't a likeable enough character, spending the movie playing tricks on everyone!
