Benchpressing with your shoulders only isolates Serratus Anterior
Very nice technique, very nicely explained. Please sometimes add exactly what part of the muscle is trained. This particular excercise is for LATISSIMUS DORSI, very good for the V-shape back. This excercise is not any more "modern" but in the 60s and 70s it was a very big lats excercise, its results are better as some BIG excercises! So I am happy you are showing it!

I've been struggling with it for so long until I just totally listened to my body and I lean forward a fair bit when the bar comes up to chin height. so when you bend forward a bit it's actually more like head height. I flex the shit out of my back tightening my butt and move slow on the negative with medium to medium light weight at first. if it doesn't feel right, it's probably not right so listen to ur body
@UtopiaMinor666 and he also eats very very clean. He could probably be a lot bigger if he ate just a little bit more but i think his main thing is strength without gaining any fat whatsoever. he may just be an ectomorph. if thats the case i deeply congratulate him

@BLONDASS123 This exercise alone will not yield strength or size gains in your lats. But is still very useful. It is more of a warm up to allow you to target your lats in other exercises. After some light/moderate sets of this, move on to your lat pulldowns, and you will really feel exactly where the work needs to come from when using proper form. That way you can place all the emphasis on your lats, (and not your biceps) because you will actually FEEL them.
@BLONDASS123 Dorian Yates used to do them. I dont think they are useless. Not a core exercise obviously, but works your lats specifically quite good. But you need to focus on the muscle you are training, i.e. lats, not on the form of the exercise or the weight. Then you ll like it.

Love this exercise. It works even better if you keep you arms dead straight and you open your palms on the push down rather than grip the bar.
