These clouds were measured at around 20,000 by Nasa. Apparently, such plumes can go much higher, forming into the classic Nimbus anvil shape, known as Pyro-Nimbus, and can even contain enough static charge to generate lightning strikes! These clouds were nowhere near that size, but were very impressive none the less. :-)
I heard on the news that the plum in SoCal was about 22 thousand feet high. Don't know if it's true or not, but that was the estimate. I can see it from my window and I'm a good 20 plus miles away.
Your time-lapse clips are incredible. I used to live in a fire-zone myself (Okanagan Valley, BC) and I don't remember it being that pretty... LOL I think you're unable to see anything other than destruction when it's so close to home 0 thanks for the different point of view! :p
I had a only a polarizing filter on at the time... The shot is slightly underexposed to help bring out the colors, otherwise, the sunset did most of the work :-)
Spectacular cumulus.

Thanks so much for your thoughts and concerns! It's been a tough one but our firefighters are tougher and they'll knock it down. =)

Thanks for the great comment :-) We are lucky this time - I've been right under it more times than I like to remember!

It sure seems that way in CA every fire season. Crazy, isn't it? It would be nice not to burn at least ONE year some day. Thanks for checking it out!
