@notfragile33 agreed, other than Ron's preoccupation with Nazi motifs and the like, he was by far the most level headed of the bunch... a real regular guy...hell, just happy to finally be able to own a new car! Sadly he passed and smartly replaced by James Williamson. Strange how James fills the same void that Ron did both with his regular guy image, and on guitar. Granted, James isn't as brutal a player as Ron, but he can deliver, & did give us Kill City and fits nicely in the Stooges saga.
@leonakita I felt the same way about James Williamson, the "regular guy" image and not as brutal as Ron, UNTIL I heard the original version of "I Gotta Right"-- is that not the MOST INSANE playing until 'thrash metal' came along? But then I found out he grew up in Lawton, Oklahoma, just down the road from me, before his family moved to Michigan, so he had a VERY 'normal' upbringing.
@notfragile33 cool, yeah Wiliamson can rip and even he admits he has a bizarre style of play. ..I GOTTA RIGHT, musta schooled thousands of would be thrashers !
There are a lot of positive things about being british....but OMFG we have some of the worst fuckin audiences on earth....Iggy Pop is a legend, keep on rockin dude!
haha "typical british audience". you do realise that the british started the whole moshing thing with pogoing to the sex pistols and other punk bands.
that's funny because seeing as most bands get popular in the u.k. first and then big in the u.s.a. e.g. the ramones, pixies, nirvana, sonic youth etc. and most bands say that they get a better reaction in the u.k. (atleast when they start) makes me think you are wrong.
peace. x
p.s. i think you're very mistaken about the english being violent, just because we don't have guns doesn't mean that if you say the wrong thing to the wrong person that they won't beat the shit out of you.
you can't make a statement and not back it up with evidence. ramones audiences regularly danced and they told people to chill out when hardcore sent it into violent moshing. and how can you say that the british didn't start it all off. i'm pretty sure you could find some videos of the sex pistols where people are dancing from before americans had even heard of punk. apparently it was a guy they nicknamed pogo pete who started it (that could be bullshit though, nevertheless my point stands)
Actually, it's a well-known fact that Sid Vicious invented the Pogo, before he joined the Sex Pistols, when he was a just a fan (friend of Johnny Rotten) who followed them everywhere. He started it to provoke & push around some other people in the audience who he didn't like, i.e: the so-called Bromley Contingent, a gang of Punk Rockers/ Pistols fans that included Siouxsie Sioux, Steve Severin (Siouxsie's future bassist), Billy Idol, etc.. nevertheless your point does remain indeed
the audience are lame yes, but its got nothing to do with being british, remember its a chatshow, not a gig.. the people who go see these chatshows live want to see cunts like madonna or some bit-part actress, or russel brand who was there.. i doubt the majority of people who went that night have even heard stooges music.
You've got to be kidding. As an American, I'm so sick and tired of audiences trying to be part of the act. If I was in the audience I would have been relieved to be able to enjoy the performance without audience members trying to get noticed by Iggy or the cameras.
@theoreilly Iggy was trying to get the audience to interact with HIM, not the other way around.
As an audience member I find it flattering if a rock star cares to interact with me in the crowd. Mick Jagger, Marilyn Manson, and Steven Tyler have all tried to interact with me in the front row- and succeeded. Fun for them as well as for me:)
i guess if its a talk show audience that are all already in seats anyone would feel self concious getting up and going for it properly, plus theyre not all gonna be there to see him perform.
its got nowt to do with them being english. Im english and I've never seen an audience this pathetic. maybe they were told to stay in their seats or something. Health and Safety and shit.
ha that poor guy Iggy was all on. I would have done SOMETHING for the sake of the performance at least. I DO feel kind of self concious around others but I would never dream of letting down Iggy Pop;)
thats not really representative of the whole of britain you should see us at reading festival, glasto stuff like that, we go more fucking mental than any other nation, just this audience is made up of 40 year olds.
The audience look like they dont even know rock music. Too much Coldplay and Kooks over the last few years, not enough vibrant passion on the airwaves.
It's nice to see that the boys appreciated the host's intelligence and knowledge. They responded with a kick-ass performance, even if it was before largely pensioners.
The old bugger looks like hell, skin like an elephants nut sack! must be all those years of smoking spider webs! haha still good on him for keeping the 60's and 70's alive and kicking
This is the problem when you get a band like the stooges on some BBC show with there 9-5 shithead lifes crowd, they just sit like there on a fucking bus ride, useless cunts.
I'm sure that's true. I mean in the punk days in London they used to bottle people. I just meant that when the Stooges played King's Cross in 1972, Iggy was leaping over people and literally grabbing people's hair.
Supposedly Johnny Rotten was in the crowd that night also...
I'm glad they're back together, they finally get to enjoy the fruits of their labor and see how many fans they have now, especially the Ashetons. Too bad Dave Alexander didn't make it. They do a good job for guys pushing 60.
re: The performance. Wow, Iggy is a fucking freak, and I mean that as a compliment! He's my dad's age as has way more energy and stage prescence than frontmen 40 years younger than him. And he lived hard! Its amazing that Keith Richards is still alive but he does look like death warmed over...
iggy is a god, anyone who disagrees can get fucked. he was just himself, he always acts like that in performances, just watch any performance on youtube at a festival or a gig.
i saw the stooges last year and i still think they're the best live band i've seen, and i've seen alot of good bands.
I disagree. I've watched a bunch of their performances on youtube, and I think they sound awesome live. A lot of the songs from the first album in particular I think have really come to life in the last few years.
Letterman is miserable. Leno is goofy. O'Brien isn't funny and never has been. So, it's nice to have a youtube alternative in the form of J. Ross who has a quick wit and hosts a more daring show than the above. The show's more interesting to look at too with its very colourful set, a four-man choir greeting each guest, and a giant screen to play vid clips and allow the host to interact with the guests on hold. Plus, it's produced in a country foreign to mine. Great show all around!
Hate to burst your bubble. Humour is subjective, so there's no point to argue that, though Letterman's self deprecation shows a human side you won't get from the others. The production and writing, "5 poofs and a piano"(Ross's intro. words), have nothing to with Ross. The waiting rooms works OK, it deflates celebrity.
i like how iggy introduces mike watt and steve mckay at the end. other big stars rarely do that. and he does it loud and clear. iggy is a humble old rocking dude.
Iggy's leering menace when he approached the scared Harvey during The Stooges' "I Wanna Be Your Dog" is a powerful reminder of what great rock and roll moments are all about!
I read some interviews with him, he says he dont want to interfere anything, and besides it was an interview with the original stooges not mike watt :)
He's awesome though and a great replacement for dave alexander!
Mike Watt wasn't an original Stooge. Bass player Dave Alexander died of a heroin overdose a long time ago. In 1973 Ron Asheton moved on bass & they had James Williamson on guitar (Raw Power album, 1973). Then Williamson died of an overdose. Stephen McKay on sax played on Funhouse, their second album (1970). Mike Watt was in The Minutemen, a California Punk band from the 80s, & joined the reformed Stooges.
Thanks,I know now Williamson is alive, but he was erroneously reported deceased in the press several years ago.. They might have confused him with Dave Alexander who died from alcohol abuse & not from drugs related problems. Thanks for putting that right.
some of us have never been part of the stereotype thats why i love him ive independently spent 3 months in nwfp pakistan and loved it am i mad too

Thanks,I know now Williamson is alive, but he was erroneously reported deceased in the press several years ago.. They might have confused him with Dave Alexander who died from alcohol abuse & not from drugs related problems. Thanks for putting that right.

If he'd got all up in my face like that I'd have grabbed his hair. I love Iggy.
