...I'm not entirely sure what all this arguing is about, since when has Jazz ever had lyrics that were intended to give a deeper insight into outer-worldly things?
sorry I posted that twice.... Kurt Elling has a wonderful transcription here... He also makes it very much his own. Also interesting was the fact that Kurt Elling was a theology student/seminary student if I am not mistaken. He surely has an immense understanding of world religions. This is both musically and lyrically fascinating.
@willshake Well its a tribute to coltrane and coltrane was a spiritual pluralist.this made a huge impression on his music which was drawn from various cultures. He was raised in a strict christian home. Father was a minister. He was married to Muslim at one point. And he was on a spiritual Journey of his own. A quest if you will.. This is exemplified in his music. This was his tribute to God but he did not understand god from a specific religious point of view
@jazzZjosh123 I'm sure you mean well but I had to consciously stop my sarcasm..
It's not about Coltrane, or Coltrane's music that I have mixed feelings, it's about Kurt Elling singing Resolution...
Why does this happen on youtube? Why do people feel like they have to teach other people, of whose knowledge they don't know nothing about? And why would i get so offended that I was about to write my whole reply sarcastically? this is a weird phenomenon man lol
@willshakeyou Maybe I missed the comments made before but I just wanna say this. Im just speaking for me, but I dont know if I got from this song that Kurt was "teaching" so to speak with the singing of this song. I personally believe in one God. This to me sounded like what Kurt may have thought Charlies horn was "saying", if his notes represented words. I thought it to be somewhat of an acknowledgement of the singularity of many different versions of the same story of creation.

I am a massive coltrane fan. I love resolution, it is probably one of my all time favourite tunes. I'm not sure if I like this or not. I heard it years ago when the album came out and loved it, but now something seems lacking, I like Kurt Elling too, it just doesn't have the honestly for me or purity of coltrane. The words come accross to me as a little pretentious and over the top. Still Kurt is a great musician and I wish I loved this more, I prefer, for example the branford marsalis version.
@dak2fan Not sure if its a huge compliment or ignorance not recognising this as vocal a tribute to Coltrane. Don't underestimate how difficult this is to sing, the phrasing and tone of Elling is where the tribute is, yeah the lyrics are a little 'out there' but so was the original piece, I personally love the vocal ''balls'' to even try and sing Coltrane.Elling is Jazz!! inventive and pushing bounderies just as a jazz artist should do.
@BWJCz God is everything or he is nothing... Based on that Christian perspective I would have disagree with your skepticism. Plus what authority do we have as finite human beings to attempt a judgment about what you perceive to be Jesus' pride?
I ran into this guy at IAJE one year and I was so caught so dumbfounded at having bumped into him I couldn't say anything intelligent. lol. He must of thought I was illiterate. lol. Great work this man contributes. Love it.
@MattieSongbird By pure luck, I met him last week (Apr. 6) at an eatery near the venue before his show. It was his first time in our city. My daughter & I were seated in a booth next to his table. I just happened to look toward that table & was shocked to see him & his band sitting there. NO ONE else knew who this guy was! I got up, introduced myself & we talked for a minute. He was very warm & gracious. He even stopped by our booth on his way out of the restaurant. Kurt made my night.:-)

God - king above all other gods - lead us now, so we can walk wherein the
prophets said that we would trod.
Buddha - tell a sutra like a spell - teach us well to answer silence with the calling of bells.
Allah - bring us to a good alarm - subjugate our wills to answer you like a mighty arm.
Elohim is a pillar of light in the dark and leading all his people to light (for
He's the king of the fire).
He brings the fire into everything that's living on earth, in the sun, in the
stars.

Quite seriously, this is insane. His vocal control is absolutely dumbfounding. Crazy crazy (sensationally!) crazy!
