The pose comes from the 19th century neo-Classical fashion in portraiture: an imitation of Roman rhetorical postures. This is more a reasonable hypothesis since blacks were not admitted into Freemasonry in the southern states until very recently (discounting Prince Hall order).

I'm actually nauseated by Stoney and the "Southern belles." Do they even realize the human toll and suffering caused by slavery? They are either ignorant of that or simply do not care, and I don't know which is worse.
