@corvetteguy1980 a friend of mine got bitten on the chest (he was sleeping on his girlfriend's dock and rolled over onto one out sunning itself) and he had a big welt there permanently that he had to go get drained by a doctor every month or so.
actually, I just found one on the wall beside my bed. I mean it wasn't technically IN my bed, but pretty darn close. I live about 20 feet off shore so this is why. Regardless, I caught him and let him go. :)
I think maybe at first, it thought the tip of the stick was some sort of bug or food. The only time ive ever seen our leap after something like that, is when its catching prey.
These are normally not aggressive at all, usually very skiddish. They only get aggressive when the have an egg sack. And don't usually bite. Although every spider can bite. These usually never attack.
Its species name is "Dolomedes Tenebrosus"
If you google it, you can find lots of info and pictures.
I have found and kept these as pets. I even hold them in my hand. You can see it in my video. Ive never seen any attack like your video, unless it thought it was food.
Do these things bite? I got bit by something, and i did see a lot of spiders around (at the cottage on the dock), and wonder if it could be these? The bite burned really bad, and the next day my foot was swollen; thank god its pretty much better now, but I sure want to figure out what bit me that I reacted to so badly.
Funny thing is those buggers are water skaters, too. I was setting up a dock at a campground a couple weeks ago, a co-worker knocked one in the water and it came hopping right after me.
Of course, my arachnophobe instinct said, "Get out of the water!"
Good to hear. I can remember my buds at our old campground daring each other to dive into the space under the boating docks where those little beasties lived.
One poor daredevil woke up the following morning with a spider bite the size of a tangerine of his wrist.
@sugarpopspete Actually I'm about a quarter mile from the nearest water and I get about 3-6 of these bad boys in my house every year. Their fast and tough to kill.
@Rasuel but but... you can get spider catcher devices like with little trapdoor slidey bits so you don't have to hurt them :O))) Can release them far away from your house.
Anyone who kills these spiders should have been born a girl, they are harmless. Spiders on average eat about 2000 insects a year, and no humans, so YOU ARE SAFE. Remember that next time you kill one, you will be attacked by 2000 insects and IT SERVES YOU RIGHT.
Aww, makes me wish I lived near water since that seems to be wear they like to live. So big! *adores spiders* I thought it was adorable how he attacked the stick. =)
lawl...i caught one at my friends island... man it was huge! and it had babyes on the dock.. O.O i killed them lol... with bug pray...oh and how i captured the dock spicer, i used a glass jar and quickly lightly slammed it againt the wood capturing the spicer... than waited till it went into the jar... i thew it into the garbage bin later on... i'm mean XD
what happens if they bite you?

I'm sure that's what it thought the stick was; they normally run away, but we hoped it would respond to the stick as it would to food.

@sugarpopspete
Yea, it does look pretty awesome attacking the stick :)
It shows how fast they are

As far as I know, all spiders can bite, but you could also have been stung by something. Hard to say.

LOL! Relax, you're not likely to find one in your bed (unless you plan to sleep in your boat; then all bets are off).

Everything has its place in the natural order, and if it isn't a danger to you there's no reason to harm it.
