  • far from being good but l love this piece. Melody's beautiful

  • @diemnomad "far from being good"? what are you talking about?? Show some respect, and don't post negative comments on something you are clearly not familiar with.

  • @PaddyBowling It's good for you but not for me. Got it?

  • @diemnomad First off, I never said it was good, just that you were being an ass by saying it was far from good. I do think he's a good player, but that's besides the point. Even if you don't think he's good, what is the point of saying "far from good"? Why bother posting something negative like that on a video of an accomplished musician? Just shows your ignorance.

  • @PaddyBowling You surprised me with your stupidity!!! Why can't I say something isn't good if it isn't for me? An accomplished musician? For you, not for me. Well, waste of time discussing with you, idiot.

  • @diemnomad ok, you're right... winning the world competition for Irish flute multiple times probably doesn't make someone accomplished... my bad...

  • it rocks !!!!

  • I never tire of hearing Michael King. Michael, if you're listening, post more videos!

  • Just a couple Irish folks getting down

  • 0:13 LOL!!

  • Is the guy playing the guitar trying to be funny? I like the way he moves

  • @dannisan77

He's getting lost in the music I think... Similar to myself.

  • A long F natural would have helped here.

  • 2:00 Fuck Yeah !!

  • @KarasuKuro jeah :D

  • Not bad, but not great :)

  • Dude this would go so good with Robing Hood movie.. dude keep it up it your most likely going to end up playing for movies and who knows even a famous band! Awsome job!

  • Inspired... (:

  • This video is the reason I started playing Irish Flute, and haven't put it down the entire two months that I've had it. I really wish Michael King had more vids/his own channel on here : (

    He's my favorite! Beautiful playing.

  • this guy is f****** awsome

  • The second tune is called 'The Bass Rock' not sure where to find a recording of Brian Finnegan playing it, but you will find Michael McGoldrick playing it on an album he recorded with Sharon Shannon, Frankie Gavin and Jim Murray, it's called 'Tunes' it's a great album to get!

  • Great music !

  • @EmoFromWisconsin me too! i've been playing for 6 years! Nowhere NEAR as good as that!

  • @ilovemarilyn2012 i been playing one month and i can play many tunes

  • Lol i will :D

  • And while im online, does anyone know the name of the second tune??

  • @Lisnageeragh. Ive heard of them They are supposed to be a great flute as well. i forgot to mention it lol. At the moment i have a seery flute. they are loud and have a good tone. although u do have to blow slightly harder into them.

  • @PatrickM1996 Thank you ... among the classical players ther are many godd makers .. and certain seem to be fashionable at different times ..it's good to test an instrument with regard to your own requirements ...what suits one ma not suit another.

Keep up the playing and be sure to get a good teacher!

  • @dancercait. The best known irish flute makers are Cotter Flutes, Sam Murray Flutes or even Des Seery Flutes. There are grinter flutes too but they are made in austrailia.

  • @PatrickM1996 Have you come across any made by Colin ''Hammy'' Hamilton?

Have seen a few Grinter instruments ...are there favourites among these new makers?

  • I hate ads..... Reserve them for TV and leave Youtube alone please!

  • Fantastic! I love Irish music!!!

  • You two are amazing!!!!! *stares and slowly picks my jaw off the floor* Does anyone know how to reattach a jaw?

  • you must be crazy if you don't like it

  • Does anyone know a good brand of irish flute to buy? I've been shopping around but have no idea. I play the flute and piccolo, but I would give anything to learn this flute. HELPPPP

  • any one has sheet music for the humours of scariff? i found one but in it the C and F are natural. how does michale plays it here?

  • my flute is comming, cant wait. :D it's rosewood and only 38. superb deal

  • I can't stop listening 2 these 2 guys. they r really good

  • hi, i want to buy an irish flute. i found this rosewood flute with amazing price, but they said it's a 8 hole flute. I'm confused. How do you play an 8 hole flute? use 8 fingers? or just 6 fingers like you play the Tinwhistle? please respond fast, i really wanna buy it. Thank u

  • @TheCherokeeboy: Whoa we both have Native themes in our screen names... crazy! Anyways, i have a six-hole Native flute. Cedar. It just plays on a different scale than a classical flute--your flute won't play some of the notes in the chromatic scale and it will probably be in a particular key. For example, my cedar flute is in A, and I have another flute which is in D. I think you would probably be able to figure out the fingering when you have the flute. :)

  • @HopiLandGirl lol hi hopilandgirl. what a coincident :D yea i'm so excited to get my new flute. but you know what suks? they sent it to the wrong address. i emailed them and they sent it again. now i have to wait another week for it lol.

  • AH!HE use opposite hand!I play like that, too....but I only play tin whistle now...so I'm wondering if I play flute, there will be something bad happen? If it's a manual flute, that's OK, it can be made like that, but if it is a classic flute...how should I do? When playing flute, using right hand, and playing tin whistle, use opposite? who can help me... : (

  • @aarontrue, I play lefty on the whistle too, even though I am right handed. when I started playing a concert flute, it actually wasn't that big of a deal. just took me a little while to adjust, but it wasn't that hard.

  • Is he on myspace or facebook?

  • I LOVE THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Where can I get this on record?

    Always wanted to do this,

    P.S-I am an Indian

    P.P.S-Yes,Indians listen to this.

  • @rozu41 XD of course indians listen to irish flute music..... i do at least XD

  • hey where can i find that second tune you play?

i would love to learn it!

    thnx...

  • anyone know where I can get one? I've been wantin' to get one for a while.

  • @Cstrife234

There are several good makers. Do an Internet search for "flute forum" and read people's recommendations. If you're new to Irish music or the flute you may want to start with a polymer flute for $100 - $500 before investing $1000 - $3000 in a wood flute. Or get a used one on e-Bag for much less. And if you're new, I'd recommend a tutor or at least a good tutorial book (also discussed in the forums), and watch a lot of these players, and practice often.

    Have fun!

  • its an irish blackwood flute they are great flutes i am just starting to play myself i have one vid of me playing "the place ill return to someday" but im nowhere near as good as him.

  • what exactly is that kind of flute called? i would like to learn how to play one :)

  • @jeppe2299

do it! it's great fun! get a penny whistle first though, it's really helpful and it's the exact same instrument as the one he's playing and a good whistle is like, what, $20? i recommended a waltons whistle!

  • Is he Cathal Mac an Ri's brother?

  • i was just watching and then BAM!! realized he was a lefty (as i'm sure someone else will have pointed out by now)

  • im a lefty! i play the same flute but i play right handed. that to me is weird

  • @02puravida ???? how do you know? im a righty and i play the same way he does

  • @02puravida how you figure that?

  • @02puravida Yep, I was watching it and then I was wondering what was different. I got excited.

  • @02puravida YAHH lefties!!! I'm sure I would have had more success with flute if I'd know there were lefthanded ones.

  • cool, can you by you self choose witch way you want it to point?? O.O

  • Mike King RULES!

  • Very nice. Also and ironic Notre Dame T-Shirt. I love the Irish.

  • no it reallllly doesn't look like J.S Bachs style =S

    goood playing =P

  • Irısh music looks like J. S. Bach's music style...

  • Hi Violinist,

I agree 100% about Bach. i love the music of bach, and irish too and I see a lot of similarities. Lots of counterpoint, for instance. Also, musical tension builds, then breaks. Irish music does it in a few bars (measures) but Bach had the liberty to spread it out more. His Brandenburgs are a good example. Listen to #3 and imagine it as a jig. I like to play Jesus Joy as a slipjig. Play it in 9/8 time and give it a little swing. Ruins the music but it's fun.

    Tom.

    Tom.

  • 1. You can say look, but I don't think in this context...

    2. Irish music really isn't related to classical baroque music :D

  • Hi MerlinofChaos -

I know your comment is 1 month old...but:

"The Jig (Irish: port) is a form of lively folk dance, as well as the accompanying dance tune, originating in England in the sixteenth century and today most associated with Irish dance music and Scottish country dance music.[" (from Wiki).

Not all irish dance are jigs, of course - but many of the movements of Bach's (and others) Suites are. Baroque secular music was nealy all based on dance rhythms - the same dances as Irish music.

  • Love the flute but I think the guitar's a bit too fancy......is it only me?

  • i think it helps put more tone 2 the music

  • Hi Matz....I've heard much fancier guitar accompaniment that this. Actually i prefer it a bit fancy and I like what he's doing here. Very plain guitar can take away from the music, I think. It's all a matter of taste and your opinion is valid even though someone gave you a thumbs down.

    Tom.

  • I'm not saying it's not good, it's just that i'm more of a simple ''classic'' type.

This started when I saw a violinist with a masters degree play a reel. It sounded too good, like crap honestly cause the original players who created this music didn't have degrees or else. It's the music of the people.

That's why i'm a bit attentive when I hear this kind of playing even if the guitar player's really good.

  • @matzchase Its not fancy, he's playing in the wrong chords.

  • Really? I couldn't hear anything obviously wrong. I did like his voicings & playing a nylon string rather a steel string, but a steel string acoustic cuts better capo'ed up like that. His chord voicings were unusual for your average acoustic player. Often when I play with other acoustic guitarists they just voice the chords in the same way. I thought his rhythmic chops added a nice background without taking away from the flute.

  • @beau5375 Hello (sorry kept getting another address come up)

Have a listen to Tríona Ní Dhomhnaill of the Bothy Band playing Humours of Scariff, you should see the difference in chords the guitarist SHOULD be playing; as it is he's picked up some completely foreign chord to the tune despite the type of guitar he's playing.

  • i once knew a man who had a really nice looking guitar but couldn't play a note, he just strummed it, but he was a great singer and everyone who heard him thought he was the best guitar player ever. anyway Michael King plays a great flute and I could listen to him all day. ( thanx melodeon John for sending this to me )

  • Thanks to melodianjohn for sending me this way ! Aye ! I lofe a good flute. A great melody !

  • nice song

  • He is an amazing flute player. could listen to him all day!

  • great

  • Is it just me or is the guitar kind of small? Or ist the guy just so tall :P ? Anyway, very nice song.

  • This was a nice duet. Most flute music is stuffy and boring. The song was nice and I waited for the poor guy to fall over with all that fast breathing needed for this song! He's got a good set of lungs!

  • Excellent flute but guitar is in totally the wrong chord for the 'chorus' part of the 'Humours' but no problem in the second tune.

  • @sheilamaclean

hahaha i heard that right as i read this

  • @sacredsong I've forgotten what it was I said, hope it wasn't too cheeky, I'll bet it was about that guitarist...

  • yeah it was, he was on the wrong chords for the majority of the second half of the first tune.

  • This may be a silly question, but what is the difference between an Irish flute and a 'normal' flute?

  • @sianchild

a quick answer is irish musicians in the mid 1800's adopted the discarded wooden simple system concert flutes after T. Boehm developed his keyed flute (the precursor to the modern metal flute, his own designs demonstrating evolution from a wooden flute to the modern metal flute.) Many contemporary makers produce flutes, based on 19th C. wood flute design models, with the intent that their flutes be used in irish music.

  • Is it difficult to switch from standard flute to Irish flute?

  • I played a 'standard' silver flute from age 10 through a bit of college, but I love my Irish flute. It's a challenge to switch, and yes at times difficult (at least for me) but well, well worth it. I've loved every minute of learning!

  • I like the first reel best. Is it just me or did in the beginning his accent sound Jamaican instead of Irish?

  • ooops forget to say, the second part in the "road to errogie" second reel

  • very good indeed, well done michael. id love to know how he does the second part.. the dgg2 g2ag|ab2a part.. are they double rolls or rolls with a bounce etc? im lost. sounds brilliant. im just about getting by with normal rolls lol *****

  • holy fuckin' ass crackers that guy could easily challenge ian anderson... perhaps.

  • He is amazing i broke my hand so find it really hard to play now since my operation!! wish i could be this good!

  • @MsMusicbabii I broke my wrist and lost all dexterity in my left hand. So I'm having to learn to play again from scratch :/

  • Wonderfull and smooth. I am determined to learn it on the ordinary concert flute.

    Thank you ever so much!!

  • thats was very good playin

  • now this is what you call a real flute player!!!!

  • this music touches my soul!

  • wish i could play like that! Just started playin irish flute, and this guy is an inspiration to me. and he's kinda cute ;)

  • ive played the flute for 8 years, and the irish flute is the most beautiful flute, ive ever heard:) he plays beautifully:)

  • Great tone. The guitarist plays awful chords to that first reel's second part though.

  • @voodooflute At last somebody has the honesty to say it, can't understand why people so reluctant to point it out; being silent about it doesn't help the guitarist to put it right.

  • He is so cute.

  • this is brilliant!

  • Piccolos are actually a different instrument altogether, measuring octives twice that of the type of flute Michael here is paying.

  • Hes not playing a flute persay, hes playing an irish flute, which can also be called a piccolo. Thats why the sounds are a bit different and such. :)

  • am irish flute cant be called a piccolo a piccolo is much smaller than a flute and in a very high pitch

  • I've watched this about a dozen times to learn The Road to Errogie (great tune!) and only just realised he's playing "left-handed" flute! Anyone else notice that?

  • now I did XD

    still it doesn't change anything

  • Really cool

  • i was wondering if there is a differents between the flute and the irish flute if the sound qualities are different or not cause they sound the same to me kind of :P

  • no no no, they don't sound the same :D

  • not the same by a long shot!

  • they are totally different

  • Nice but I would like to listen more guitar players like Michael Ó Domhnaill style not John Doyle.

    Anyway its fine.

  • "Jam session" posted by "TinWhistler" < very nice

    this is also good

  • He is one purdy boy =] I would like to play flute with him =]

  • nice.

  • Sorry, not flute guy, you're brilliant - I mean GUITAR GUY

  • Flute guy - your keys are way off; listen to the Bothy Band

  • what exactly do you mean? his keys are all in the right place. and if you mean key as in key signatures, he doesn't play a single wrong note.

  • @Lochbesda16 I meant the guitar chords, is it not that obvious?

  • I believe the second tune is "The Road to Errogie" written by Adam Sutherland of Scotland -- credit where credit is due. (<:

    Wonderful presentation!!

  • he's hot!! :p

  • sehr gut

  • Hi Michael, my name is James King from Scotland, all my King side are from Ireland. I play with a lot of trad musicians myself-well done. Scarrif is a braw place.

  • God, absolutely amazing.. 2 tunes are fantastic and played effortlessly.

2.01- Excellent stuff, Go raibh maith agat

  • Anybody know what key that flute is in? thanks.

  • D i think
