Kind of rough and anarchic, but this was the song that Airplane used as their set opener that season, and everybody was getting their feel for the stage. By their 2nd or 3rd song they'd usually get in tune and hit their stride, which at Woodstock they certainly accomplished. That's how shows were back then.
one of fred neil's masterpiece songs(also covered well by the lovin' spoonful.....he also wrote 'the dolphins', &...'everybody's talkin'(the theme from 'midnight cowboy').god blessm'im. marty & the grace just tearin it up at dawn!!!

I wonder what actually happened to the entire footage of this song? There is about 40 seconds before it fades into Won't you try. Did they just turn-off the cameras?
I love their frentic rendition of this classic tune though. 9 hrs waiting & straight out of the traps. For all-round content JA's dawn set was head & shoulders above everyone else at the festival. And it's amazing to think the band gave their performance a thumbs down afterward. Bet they don't believe that now. No chance.
This version was fuelled by a night of whiskey & Californian Kush as they waited to come on. At the peak of their powers they were up there with Led Zep for never playing the same version of a song twice. Shame the Stones nabbed Nicky Hopkins for the Exile album & tour. How good would they have continued to be if they'd kept him & not changed drummers. Still, what they did in that 5 year stretch few bands have ever come near. My fav version of this song tho. A hot mess of the higest order!
@ioriorioriorio Being the geek that I am on these pointless matters, from 3 sources I've read that that was the weed of choice backstage on that saturday night. I dunno, its a hybrid, I guess. They were also on wine, whiskey and coke. How the guys performed that set as well as they did I'll never know. Adds to the myth though. I'm wrapping another one up in celebration.
JACK LEADS then.........SPENCER TAKES OFF AT 0.53 then NICKY TAKES OFF AT 1.03 then JORMA TAKES OFF AT 1.26..... My Speakers broke at 1.46. Correct me if I am wrong
@dreama505 My second electric was an ES335 Cherry Red with Over Under Bigsby wah bar and it screamed when you wanted...and played soft jazz and rhythm when you wanted...loved that piece....
And it did work with that drummer Sterling being a bit all over the map. He was kinda jazzy which gave the others that space in there to shine. But, most importantly, he had a great timing. Had his own pocket.
JA played this song differently everytime- from the funky, bass driven version on BIPLH, to this sped up amphetamine version, to the funky smooth version at Altamont.
One of the forgotten greats are the Plane. They had all the ingredients, different styles that swung together. Pioneers too, let's not forget too. Nicky Hopkins was their icing on their cake at this gig. What a player. And they came out at dawn and did this! Amazing.
'forgetten greats' - so true - by far the most talented, innovative group from that scene - live performances between '68 and '70 particularly - had been working hard on the road for a few years - became an incredibly dynamic, powerful, cohesive unit - they created their own genre - unique chemistry - can never be recreated.
But the live take of this song on Bless its Pointed little Head kicks the shit out of this one - hard and tight with one of the greatest bass lines ever IN YOUR FACE.
@vectortemple I've just listened to Bless its Pointed little Head again, and it sure smokes. I think this version pips it though. It's Nicky Hopkins that's the capper; and I prefer the drumming too. It's still fresh. Hasn't dated a jot. Alas, sadly overlooked. My doobie is lit. Th Other Side of This Life we go once again. Goodmorning People!
@jakeenan - cannot argue on matters of taste - Hopkins is a great addition - but I like the phead version becuase the bass is pumped way up and out in front on that mix - that cut and the one after it 'It's not Secret' - Jack shreds that ax to ribbons - In Woodstock clips he's playing his souped up Guild - think that's on Pointed Head too - but at some point he switch to a custom made Alembic - early prototype that they made special for him. Fly On JA, Fly On...
@jakeenan I knew Nicky Hopkins played with the Stones on many a great tune, and John Lennon's Imagine, but do yourself a favor. Google his name and check the Wikipedia page on him. The guy is a true unsung hero of some of our favorite groups!
@jagfug I have Nicky Hopkins playing on about 20 to 30 cds in my collection. You're not telling something I don't already know!
It was a shame that his playing was too far back in the recording mix at times during the Airplane's gig here at Woodstock though. But you can still hear enough of him playing his ass off.
Great energy. Love the sound of Jorma's guitar. I can almost smell the smoke from his amp. Embellishments by Nicky Hopkins superb. Not to mention Casady's stampeding bass line smashing everything in its path. Once in a lifetime stuff.
I've owned Bless Its Pointed Little Head since 1973 and it's grown on me every damned year. I thought I knew how good this band was back then but had no idea really...yet I actually did.
They seeked beautiful chaos and often found it to our delight. Lot of great bands that had their own identity but only the Beatles could exceed these guys, IMV, and they had to craft their work. The Airplane could have, to a great extent, cared less.
@bendbadgersteve - amen - well spoken dude. Amazing music - JA was a lot tougher and much more inventive and daring then the Beatles, who got very caught up in themselves IMO - JA were wild - they played hard and tough on the road for several years and they left it all out there on stage - can't compare CA to England... LOL.... From '68 to '70 JA's live material is incomparable.
If you want to know what kind of band the Aiirplane really were, get your hands on their live album 'bless its pointed little head' and you'll hear a better take of this song and lot of other amazing shit, particularly highlighting the greatness of Gracie and Jack - the great talents who carrried that band.
@apemanstreetwalker - 'Metal' was invented by Hendrix, the Airplane, and Cream - Zeppelin was already 2nd generation. 'hippie' bands - kids have no idea of what was actually going down back then....
(Cont.) This cultural joining landmark accelerated the momentum of everything, making our movement gigantic. These were heady times when this all came together, and we felt a new dawning. But as I explained they (the hidden hand powers) worked hard to sideline our Paradigm Shift momentum. (they glommed on [joined in] to exploit the original movement to twist it their way) which is why I mentioned the rampant Narcissism so pandemic today.
Kind of rough and anarchic, but this was the song that Airplane used as their set opener that season, and everybody was getting their feel for the stage. By their 2nd or 3rd song they'd usually get in tune and hit their stride, which at Woodstock they certainly accomplished. That's how shows were back then.

No, not the greatest American rock and roll band, but worth listening to. They will tell you the same.
Did have some talent, however, such as Marty Balin.

Hi! sirigi22,
My Roots are in early Folk Revival(60-63).
Then civil rights movement (early 60's)
Morphed into the Anti war movement,(65)
when Bob Dylan went electric 1965(?)
at Newport Folk Festival, Rhode Island US
I was one of the many who BOOed him,
but I went with it after all.
