Republic of Ireland is just a title... when have you ever heard Republic of France, Kingdom of Spain or Republic of Germany? It's Ireland and Northern Ireland and both of them together is Island of Ireland.

The President of Ireland serves as its head of state. And also it ceased to be part of the Commonwealth after it became a republic. Ireland has even less to do with Britain than countries such as Australia or Canada.

@squirell1952 When Ireland became a republic it was put out of the Commonwealth as under the rules at that time any colony that became a republic was out. This rule was scrapped within days of Ireland's exit and Ireland has always refused to rejoin.

@fixingbraincell But comparing Ireland and the UK. The unemployed receive €188 per week and the state pension is €230 per week in Ireland but in the UK its fuck all. We have council tax and tap water charges in the UK but Ireland doesn't. Ireland is 7th on the 2011 HDI scale but the UK is 28th and you'll be pleased to know that Australia is 2nd by the way.
