Why does it seem that an abnormal amount of the bad shit in this hack comes from people taking levels other have submitted and adding their own "awesome" changes? Even without the author knowing about it?
Without the jumping fireballs, this would have been a very good level. And since the creators apparently didn't put them in, whoever did is just a jerk and hates humans.
Why would someone add effectively invisible, mobile death monsters? Actually, why doesn't Bowser *always* do that?
I see so much potential for drama in the comments for these videos. Certain people should chill the hell out. (Said people will probably not read this comment, but whatever.)
@PureRok Your guess is as good as mine dood. All I know is that whomever did the deed deserves a good swift kick in the nuts for screwing around with an otherwise respectable effort. =\
I feel kinda bad for Zone and Brad. I mean, for the most part the level looked pretty solid. But then one dumb decision on someones part completely overwrote any sort of good planning that went into their work. Not to mention VERY bad placement on the overworld to drive yet another nail in the coffin. A damn shame really. D=
@NeoTiamat Yeah, after the fact I have learned that the original version of the level DID NOT, in fact, have hopping fireballs. That was added later, by someone else, and SNN doesn't know who.
@NeoTiamat Why would you do this? If they wanted the level to be a little harder or something why didn't they just tell the original creators to do something to it instead of messing with it themselves?
I hated when they used this kind of gimmick in the New Super Mario Bros. Wii so much. The level where you are on the raft and the enemies fall from the hided spots in the fog made the otherwise easy level extremely hard for me for some reason. There was another level that used the very same kind of hiding the enemies thing, but it wasn't that bad. The level just burned in to my mind when I just tried to collect all of the Star Coins and died, died and died. It was so frustrating!
That last level was difficult, but with no payoff. It was a hidden level, too. It went nowhere. As far as risk vs. reward goes, that whole level is pointless.
There's Belgian chocolate (dark to the power of rich), and there's French vanilla (with the little seeds for extra flavor). Both are so good everyone should try them, if reasonable.
Now Mr. Raocow dude, I have really supported you up till now. When others said you should change, I always disagreed with them. I thought you were doing a great job. And you are, but I think after this game you should take a break and play something using savestates. Just to have fun ya know? I've been watching your old videos of the past Raocow and honestly, you seemed to have more fun back then. Just a statement from someone who has watched everyone of your videos. =3
Hey raocow, idea for future projects, since you're almost done with this one. You ever do a series of videos that's kind of a sort of 'clip show' of some of the hacks you've played? A review series would be pretty fun, since I've never really played a Mario Hack and you offering your opinions on some of your favorites would be pretty cool. In any case, keep up the good work ^_^
Man, this is about the worst hack I've seen. You think this "elite" community could put together something good, but it makes them look more like elitist snobs than anything.
@x612nt13 I agree. Really, it's ironic, because if you notice the "hints" thing up at the top of the site every time you load it, some times it says "There's a line between difficult and unfair. Try not to cross that line." I think it's safe to say that most of this hack crosses said line.
Only a handful of levels actually go into the "unfair" territory, the rest of the flawed levels while have something stupid to ruin the level, are not "unfair".
@BeatBoxingBoox I haven't been around the community for that long tbh. Though I feel even Hyper V was superior to this, as awful as that got near and after endgame.
People always get this idea that they're "the best hackers on SMWC". This isn't the case at all. Half of the people who jumped in SMWCP have never even made a level before or just wanted to join for fun. Nobody thought the project would go anywhere at first since it went through about five different leaders.
But man, you guys can keep thinking what you want!
Plus as flawed as this game is, if this is the "worst hack you've ever seen", then you've clearly seen nothing much at all. Hell, Raocow himself has played much worse.
i haven't seen raocow so mad he speaks in french an extreme amount. thanks brad and zone for making an extremely unfair and frustrating level -.- that is probably why SMWC stuck it in a corner in a dead end
For starters, Brad did the canopy section and it never had any Hopping Flames in it. That was someone else's doing and they were snuck into the level very, very late in the game's development. Next, the level was "put into a corner/dead in" because Riolu, made the overworld before any of the levels were actually made. If it were the way you said it was, the level would've been tossed out... much like many "scrappy" levels (such as tomorrow's).
I periodically browse Raocow's video comments (even if they're YouTube comments) throughout the day and reply to anything I feel needs to/could be addressed. Who a specific person is doesn't factor into who I reply to.
You know what this reminds me of? Afraid of something unseen, from ASMT. The thing about it is, that level had much better level design in that it was obvious where enemies were going to be - saws in one particular spot, and bullets that always go in a straight line. Other than the bullets not firing from their proper spots, anyway. Here, enemies like the fire and hopping koopas are very hard to predict when you can't see where they are and which way they have jumped or bounced off the ceiling.
I personally don't think the second part of Creepy Dark Woods was bad in the least. Hidden enemies that you have to look out for through small openings isn't a new concept in platforming. I think the idea was to carefully move forward and use shells to clear your way of the fire and other enemies. So, on your winning run, you did that properly... except more with a cape.
It's levels like this that make you KNOW there is a lot of bias in the fact that this is the top rated featured hack. I don't know, I think VIP has more fair levels than some of the ones in this hack.
10:33 "Voyons, tabarnak..." " What the, damnit ! "
16:14 "Tabarnak"... I won't translate it, basically it's like the F word. We use these kind of word for different things. To know what it mean, you need to rely on the tone of the voice. Sometime it's more soft than other. In that case it was a F word.
@Sum1stio Because ofcours someone cant just be completely burned out by a level that is quite frankly extremely boring and make stupid mistakes because of it. I don't care if it's fair or not, but having "Oh man, i have to wait around for enemy's i can't see all the time" isn't a good level gimmick, its boring to play, boring to watch, and all around boring.
The main reason I'm not watching this hack has to be for the collective "pseudo Kaizo" feel it's going for. MUNCHER MAZES ARE BAD BUT IF IT DOESN'T LOOK LIKE ONE THEN IT'S OK. Raocow, I'm sorry you're playing this. I really am.
What I would do is put the flame behind trees so that it jumps and then lands right behind the next one, so you at least see it when it moves. And since it seems to make the first jump as it goes onscreen, it won't be the biggest trap in the world.
Finally got the chance to watch the full video, and I do not ever recall the canopy section of CDW having those Hopping Flames. Those definitely had to have been sneaked in very late into the hack's progress.
All the more reason the next one will have stricter level moderation.
Even a level with that kind of gimmick could be an enjoyable one, just the sheer fact that they used it in such an annoying way such as with the fire as well as just putting the canopy everywhere takes the fun out of it. A bit of a fake difficulty.
Wow, you referenced Christianity and Charlie Sheen in the same breath almost. Today, Charlie Sheen's show Two and a Half Men was shut down because (speculative) he was on the Alex Jones show last night and he said "Vatican Assassins" which is a book by Eric Jon Phelps which points out the real JFK murderers as being from the Vatican's Jesuit Order. Very good read, and very heavy with proof. RAOCOW IS AN INSIDE JOB.
You gotta admit, it had alot of potential to be a good level. Take away the fireballs, and maybe remove a bit of the canopy, and it would have been pretty nice.
It wasn't a bad level, it was just a horrible gimmick.
Wow... Tiny little homing enemies that leave behind nice little, less than meaningful gifts of doom, hiding in narrow passages. That's just mean. Sure it has the possibility of being easy, but that's still just mean.
Uh, yeah... tip to any level makers: foreground stuff might look cool, but using it to hide enemies is an exceptionally bad idea. Does it really sound fun to get killed by enemies you didn't even see? This is level design 101 stuff here....=/
I honestly don't think the second half of the level was that bad. The enemies were not completely invisible, but required patience to overcome. Sure, there is an element of trial and error, but the level seemed designed to force you to slow down and plan your progress. People used to the fast pace of the game would have gotten off guard.
And people wondered why I ragged on the invisible enemy level in ASMT? When you can't see enemies, you can't avoid them. It's a level of artificial and wildly unfair difficulty. And as for P-Balloon segments, At least they were 100% optional in SMW, just used for bonus stuff like a cape-able secret exit in Forest of Illusion 1.
Honestly, if you're going to make a romhack, do it right. This is not right. And people wonder why I say romhacks should inherit the original spirit of SMW?
You needed to P-Baloon in Tubular though. Sure, that's an optinal level, but so is Amethyst Vein, so I don't really see your point.
And concerning hidden enemies, I don't see things as black and white as you do. I liked Blind Bayou in Rise to the Challenge for instance, because while half the level was covered by the foregroung, the enemies remained predictable due to good placement.
This level however does it very badly. One of the worst levels in ASMWCP indeed.
@edwardbaseball well they should have thought about that canopy gimmick section, honestly! If a section is not funto me, I won't pretend that it's fun, or something like that.
If this level were in somewhere like a grassland, so the branches could be moved away, it would seem to be a lot better. The player needs to see what they're doing, guys!
@FonMasterIon they are, because they are tiny. I mean, for example, I wouldn't mind that much those koopas. They're pretty large and they wander around, they're not that hard to spot. But those flames are tiny and there's like no way to even notice them, I guess the only thing worse would be munchers...
When you can't see anyways, I'd argue that larger enemies have larger hitboxes and thus are easier to collide with/ harder to avoid. Just my take on it.
I look at these sort of levels and think "Do these authors seriously look at this and think it'd be fun? Bearing in mind they're supposed to be the best hackers on SMWC?"
Where the hell did you get that thought from? SMWC is just a central hub for SMW hacking and SNN already explained the matter on who made levels in his response to Airwingpilot. (Just look through the comments for it.)
@Arwingpilot People always get this idea that they're "the best hackers on SMWC". This isn't the case at all. Half of the people who jumped in SMWCP have never even made a level before or just wanted to join for fun. Nobody thought the project would go anywhere at first since it went through about five different leaders.
But man, you guys can keep thinking what you want!
Judging by the title "Super Mario World Central Production", you'd think since the website dedicated its name to it, it'd be somewhat prestigious over other hacks hosted on that site. Plus, I know several of the genuine best hackers who worked on this hack like you, yoshicookiezeus, WhiteYoshiEgg and others I can't pick out the top of my head. I guess that was enough evidence for me to assume only the best worked on this hack. Sorry, my bad!
@SlamminWolfgang I respect your opinion 'cause I know difficulty isn't everyone's cup of tea, but I'm genuinely curious as to how you broke my level with a cape. :o Can you explain?
Alright then, just what was so "bad" with this level that you had to (albeit in a futile effort due to how the level is designed against flight) skip as much of it as you could?
@TeamRAR *Monster truck ralley voice* Saturday, Saturday, SATURDAY! Witness the Rampaging Raocow face his toughest opponent yet, HIMSELF, as he takes on his own level, "RUPTURE IN REALITY"!!! Thousands of spikes, Layer 2 Platforming, and Eye-Shatteringly Beautiful Level Art, and he's taking it on SAVESTATE-LESS, only this SATURDAAAY!!! (Assuming it's happening on SATURDAAAY!!!)
Price for seats are free, but YOU WILL ONLY NEED THE EDGE!!!
I'm becoming more and more convinced that people use Touhou music as some sort of fail-safe. Can't think of any song that will fit? Just throw in that Cirno thing or something.
It feels like I've said this before, but how the hell did they let the last half of Creepy Dark Woods get through? That's pretty much every bad bit of level design possible crammed into one section.
@SmashDaisaku Yeah, believe it or not, I didn't throw in the Cirno music "just because." I actually had no idea the song was so popular and overused or I would NOT have used it. :x
I feel kinda' bad for it. I think it gives the wrong impression, now.
@Mineyl That wasn't necessarily directed at you. It's just a trend that I'm noticing more. The music can be good when used properly, but I just don't think this level was quite right for the song it used.
@Mineyl Don't worry about it. If you thought it fit, then chances are it did well enough. It does have that chimey sound that's associated with ice but also all sorts of other crystalline things, so I can see where you're coming from.
I warned you raocow, now the forces of kaizo have begun to show.... tune in tomorrow for flying masks, thwomps, saws, fuzzies, fire-jumpers, podobos, and magikoopas.
@Tr0tim Which is ironic considering that this game is supposed to be made by the "best" hackers on the Interwebz~
You have some extremely well-done levels, and then some mediocre levels, and then the really bad ones. xD; Doesn't quite live up to the expectations that were probably set up before the game's release. xP
Why does it seem that an abnormal amount of the bad shit in this hack comes from people taking levels other have submitted and adding their own "awesome" changes? Even without the author knowing about it?
Its terrible production values.

Sure, there is an element of trial and error, but the level seemed designed to force you to slow down and plan your progress. People used to the fast pace of the game would have gotten off guard.
gansmith 1 year ago
@gansmith
I don't feel this game is fast paced. It's constantly forcing you to slow down with everything.

Started off promising, but the hidden enemies thing was quite asinine.
This hack would have been awesome with more midpoints where needed, and better quality testing to weed out absolutely worthless gimmicks.
Oh well.

You followed an amethyst vein to the end and expected it to lead to something other than disaster? Somebody isn't familiar with Dwarf Fortress.

Let's just be honest: hiding enemies behind layer 2 sucks.

FonMasterIon 1 year ago
@FonMasterIon

If a section is not funto me, I won't pretend that it's fun, or something like that.
raocow 1 year ago 70
@raocow
The canopy section was done only by Brad172, actually. The level is a joint effort only by who did which half.
MrDeePay 1 year ago
@edwardbaseball I'm pretty sure there's some correlation between level quality and critical reception.
just sayin'.
anonymousbl00dlust 1 year ago
@edwardbaseball Well,they should feel like crap since what they did with the enemies in there level was cheap and uncalled for.

Why would anyone ever have fun doing a P Balloon section
TheNamegive 1 year ago
I liked the cave level even though it WAS lengthy. But the forest level's canopy section was straight out unfair.

If this level were in somewhere like a grassland, so the branches could be moved away, it would seem to be a lot better. The player needs to see what they're doing, guys!

Flames should be forbidden in that kind of 2nd layer levels that hide your enemies.
luke100ster 1 year ago
@luke100ster
Hidden enemies should always be "forbidden." Flames aren't anything special.
FonMasterIon 1 year ago
@FonMasterIon they are, because they are tiny. I mean, for example, I wouldn't mind that much those koopas. They're pretty large and they wander around, they're not that hard to spot. But those flames are tiny and there's like no way to even notice them, I guess the only thing worse would be munchers...
luke100ster 1 year ago
@luke100ster
When you can't see anyways, I'd argue that larger enemies have larger hitboxes and thus are easier to collide with/ harder to avoid. Just my take on it.
FonMasterIon 1 year ago
@FonMasterIon very possible... though you can at least expect them coming, think something out and stuff... but yeah, that's true.
luke100ster 1 year ago
I look at these sort of levels and think "Do these authors seriously look at this and think it'd be fun? Bearing in mind they're supposed to be the best hackers on SMWC?"
Arwingpilot 1 year ago
@Arwingpilot So I wasn't the only one that thought this. It's kind of a disappointment.
Xjustin3009X 1 year ago
@Xjustin3009X
Where the hell did you get that thought from? SMWC is just a central hub for SMW hacking and SNN already explained the matter on who made levels in his response to Airwingpilot. (Just look through the comments for it.)
MrDeePay 1 year ago
@Arwingpilot People always get this idea that they're "the best hackers on SMWC". This isn't the case at all. Half of the people who jumped in SMWCP have never even made a level before or just wanted to join for fun. Nobody thought the project would go anywhere at first since it went through about five different leaders.
But man, you guys can keep thinking what you want!
SNN135 1 year ago
@SNN135

I flew over as much of Amethyst Mine as I could with a cape. I hated it.

@SlamminWolfgang
Which is roughly not much at all. The level is hard, yes, but it's also very much managable (sp).

MrDeePay 1 year ago
@MrDeePay
Or I could just continue to use the cape to break levels that I can't stand. Amethyst Vein just wasn't fun.
SlamminWolfgang 1 year ago
@SlamminWolfgang I respect your opinion 'cause I know difficulty isn't everyone's cup of tea, but I'm genuinely curious as to how you broke my level with a cape. :o Can you explain?
Mineyl 1 year ago
@SlamminWolfgang
Alright then, just what was so "bad" with this level that you had to (albeit in a futile effort due to how the level is designed against flight) skip as much of it as you could?

I'm becoming more and more convinced that people use Touhou music as some sort of fail-safe. Can't think of any song that will fit? Just throw in that Cirno thing or something.
It feels like I've said this before, but how the hell did they let the last half of Creepy Dark Woods get through? That's pretty much every bad bit of level design possible crammed into one section.
SmashDaisaku 1 year ago
@SmashDaisaku Yeah, believe it or not, I didn't throw in the Cirno music "just because." I actually had no idea the song was so popular and overused or I would NOT have used it. :x
I feel kinda' bad for it. I think it gives the wrong impression, now.

@Mineyl Shuting your mouths; it was a good choice of song.
Amethyst=Crystal
Ice=Shiny=Crystal
Manonthe3up 1 year ago
@Mineyl That wasn't necessarily directed at you. It's just a trend that I'm noticing more. The music can be good when used properly, but I just don't think this level was quite right for the song it used.
SmashDaisaku 1 year ago
@Mineyl Don't worry about it. If you thought it fit, then chances are it did well enough. It does have that chimey sound that's associated with ice but also all sorts of other crystalline things, so I can see where you're coming from.
