As long as the people at hollywood didn't intend for there to be a "white only" cast, then it shouldn't be that much of a deal. It's not hollywood's fault that most people who become good actors are white. Am I mad that non-whites were in the THOR movie, and they basically destroyed my native culture? Yes, but it's just the way hollywood is.
The Asian people have a strong culture, more-so than Europeans, yet any non-white minority can claim to be the victim
@pooptickler1337 well you said it: As long as the people at hollywood didn't intend for there to be a "white only". That´s the problem, the flier of the casting said something like "CAUCASIANS or any other ethnicy. It´s like saying hey man whe need white or anybody else. Is white a superior being? Almost all the cast is white and i´m sure that a lot of asians and latino/filipino/black people, etc tried for the cast but FOR SOME REASON they are not in the movie.
Why do "whites" or pink people always impose themselves in/on other people's cultures? Why can't they respect boundaries!?! Asians should play Asians, Blacks should play blacks, just as whites play whites, Hispanics should play Hispanics, etc., etc., etc.
That guy at around 0:50 made me mad enough to kick him in the face, kung fu style! Without many of the minorities or "imigrants" a lot of us wouldn't be here, we all have little traces of our ancestors, I don't like hollywood, but I also don't really mind who they casted, it's just the outward appearances that we descriminate, despite who we really are. When I was in school taking a test several years ago, they have those fill in bubbles, I couldn't find my ethnicity anywhere, only "other".
@0:51 LOL @ yet another dumbass cracker who fails to grasp the concept that Asians can actually be conceived and given birth to in the United States. Stupid fuck.
I agree with that woman, if the best person they pick is white, then so be it. I dont agree about banning colored persons from auditioning, but other than that, its may the best actor win.
it seems by some of the comments people have made, they'd be cool with a fat albert remake being done with an all-white cast, just as long as they're capable of acting the part of an african american character. what does that really convey...how exactly does a white person do a good job at being black? would people have been totally cool if we had substituted asian, latino, or african american actors for any of the other cartoon remakes like alvin and the chipmunks, the flintstones, the jetsons?
You want them to cast people in the movie because of their race, instead of whether or not they're the best for the part? =/
The entire boycott is, in my opinion, completely ridiculous. The fact that the characters in the cartoon series were asians should not mean that those in the film HAVE to be asian. What matters is that they can really play the part of the character. You're focusing on race far too much.
@iCrazyStaff Your whole premise is based on the fact you believe white actors are the more talented then the hundres (or thousand) of eligible asian actors that have could have played this asian inspired role. Give me break!! Let's get one thing straight hollywood is all about looks first and talent a far second. The original casting call was for caucasian actors primarily and ethic actors secondary for the lead roles. Make sure you don't choke on your own bullsh!t.
@iCrazyStaff Im focusing on both actually, and sense M. night didn't pick the best actors to play the part he could of at least pick the best person to portray the race..which he failed at as well. Did you just here what you said? You agree yourself that in the cartoon they are Asian but then say they dont have to be in the movie? Well why not? Why cant they be? Do you see that many Asian actors these days? No cause no ones casting them, they can pick someone who IS Asian and who can ALSO act.
I just want the avatar casts to at least capture the character's physical appearance of the series accurately, just so it be based on the show well. :/ I don't care if the person acting as Katara is half Indian or Mexican, doesn't even have to be asian, just look and act like her.
LOL at the ignorant white man and the "your protest is silly" asian lady.
its ok that white guys are almost always the hero eh? its the white team to save the day! help us white people, the bad and oh so evil colored people are here to enslave and kill us! yeah, its silly.
maybe next time we will see a samurai x movie with the whitest of white people playing japanese people. i mean, its just a movie based off a cartoon. no big deal.
Hmm I can tell this is biased. The guy says "why are you in the USA" but there is no context to that comment. It's racist to say only one race can play a role. An Asian guy can be George Washington, it would look weird but not racist.
Lets make a movie about Michael Jackson with asian playin the role and paint him black. hehe. OR, lets make a movie about MLK and let a white dude play the role and paint him black. hehe...
if black ppl start complainin just say to them hey no racism here.
i want to see george washington play by asian guy.
WHERE THE FUCK does that white guy get off asking, "Well, why are you in the united states?" I got a better one for him: let's ask the HOPI, NAVAJO, CREE, SIOUX, SEMINOLES, CHEROKEE, WAMPANOAG, BLACKFOOT, CREEK, MENOMINEE, WASHITAW, and several other indigenous people why and HOW white folks got there?????Hmmmm. . . . . .
The asian lady who said the protest is silly was hillarious. Im not asian but i still find the casting to be offensive. Im a big fan of the cartoon and never once assumed that any of the characters were white since they could read chinese characters and in real life could speak it. The casting takes away from the authenticity of the story and makes it seem ridiculous. The movie would of been awesome if it had a Chinese director. JET LI WOULD OF BEEN AWESOME AS ZUKOS FATHER! Anyone agree?
Freedoms, land of opportunity, all men are created equal, etc etc, and all that other good stuff that the US is supposed to be about.
I don't recall becoming whitewashed, but still having to stand on the sidelines while Caucasians of equal or lesser talents get the better opportunities as a selling point for America, do you?
I'm very disappointed with how the casting turned out. There could have finally been some breakthrough roles for asian actors in hollywood. I'm still going to see the movie....just not in theaters.
People don't seem to realize the underlying issue in this movie and others like it is that you would never see a Black person or Asian person in the role of someone like George Washington. In fact, people who are white would feel uncomfortable with that and yet we are so accepting of white people taking on the roles of other races--even if better actors CAN be found to portray them.
@wallflower20307 - As a white person and a supporter of racebending's ideals, I have to say I have aboslutely NO problem with non-whites starring in lead roles/being heroes/protagonists and greatly enjoy creating characters of ALL backgrounds for my own stories - always have. There's plenty of whites that aren't "uncomfortable" with non-whites in the lead of a story... The problem is that it's ASSUMED all of us would be uncomfortable and the studios pander to that mentality. That frustrates me.
@DalishRanger Agreed. There's plenty of whites that aren't "uncomfortable", just as there's plenty of non-whites that don't care whether there's non-white actors in movies. However, the prevalence of certain "ideals" is carried in every aspect of entertainment. Whether it's on the cover of a magazine or in a movie. There's an "ideal" for how our actors should look. Unfortunately people like us don't voice our opinions & preferences, leaving it up to marketing people to decide what we see.
I'm a big fan of the racebending movement but I'm VERY disappointed with this trailer. Racebending says that the makers go out of their way to cast whites, well most of the supporters of racebending ARE white and this video makes white people and black people looks like fools. Very disappointed about how this turned out.
This is the reality. I'm black, and I'm not offended by this. You can't ignore the reality that many non-Asians are ignorant towards the reality "racebending", many of them don't see a problem with it.
I mean, they even portray an Asian American woman as foolish, didn't you see her calling the protest ridiculous?
You guys are making a documentary!?! Can I help!?! I can speak some Japanese and I'm part Chinese. I study Manga and East Asian culture. I'm also going into International Relations and Politics, so I'm a peacemaker and a debater, and master debater.

Maby there isnt enough english speaking asian and/or inuit actors/acctress's i spose if there were many asian children auditioning they should pick them. But look at any japanese manga store and you will see that the characters are based on white people which is stupid but "supporsidly" it is easier to show emotions on a white character than in an asian one. I'm not taking sides with anyone.
I know it was based in asian culture..and I'm also pissed about the whitewashing, but Katara and Sokka were supposed to be Inuit, while Aang was quite obviously white. There were MANY different races, for it took place in a large world from the south pole to the north, and it kinda irks me when you try to make this all about asians..
Overall, I am with you on this, I can't believe white's apparently the only race that can act well.
0:50 ---- typical redneck neo-con moron. From my side, I am not going to see this movie. I will not support discrimination. I am sorry for the kids who are playing the leading roles, I am sure they are talented kids but one day people will see this movie and compare it with those movies back in the 1920's when white actors had to paint their faces to look black.
The obnoxious white guy asking you why you were in America was just absolutely astounding. Did he forget that white people are not native to the USA? His jackass shrug just set his douchebaggery over the top.

1. It's a movie!
2. It's not just for kids, M. Knight made the story a little older to target a larger audience. Plus, kids wouldn't really care anyways.
3. Most of the characters of the Avatar cartoon do not even look Asian.
4. The cartoon may have been based on ancient Asian culture, but it does not take place in Asia. It takes place in an entirely made up world where people can be whatever race the creators want them to be.
Take a look at M. Knight, not white. Is he whining?
PacoJalapeno7 --- you are 100% wrong. The whole setting of the last airbender is based on Asian culture, probably you haven't seen the series. All the writing are in Chinese characters and the buildings, clothing and names are based on Asian culture and myth. The main characters are darked skinned kids, and the protagonist looks like a little Buddhist monk. In which sense "Most of the characters of the Avatar cartoon do not even look Asian"????
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
You might want to take a look at my point number 4 again. I know that it is based on Asian culture, but it does not take place in Asia. It takes place in an entirely made up world. And yes, I have seen the entire series. I have been an avid follower since its premiere. And yes, Katara and Sokka, along with the rest of the Water Tribe, do have dark skin, not resembling an Asian, but an ancient Native American. And the waterbending's style is based on Tai Chi, which is Asian....
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Therefore the Waterbenders are even a mix of nationalities. And yes, Aang and the other Air Nomads might resembled Buddhist monks in their clothing, but their skin type and facials features are not necessarily distinguishable as Asian. To sum it up, Avatar takes place in a made up world were the people are of an undefined nationality in regards to the real world, even though many other aspects of the story are "BASED" on Asian culture. The cast of the movie need not be any specific race.
@PacoJalapeno: Yes, it is a made up world, a made up world rooted strongly in Asian culture, so why would the people who inhabit it be white? You don't see Aang as Asian because he doesn't have any Asian stereotypes, like yellow skin or slanty eyes. Believe it or not, not all Asian people have bright yellow skin. Google it, there are some videos addressing it here on YouTube as well. ....Continued...
...Continued. And the eyes-- Are there white people with eyes as big as Aang's? It's a highly stylized cartoon, and the large eyes are meant to show youth and innocence.
@picklenation lol ASIANS a lot of them you know try to please white people so that does not surprise me at all...not ALL but I know a lot that always seem to agree with white people like when miley cyrus did the asian eye thing a lot of asian laughed it off and they were like people are over-exaggerating
This whole event is being blow way out of proportion but it still doesn't make it acceptable to cast people of a completely opposite race as the characters they're portraying. In a way it is a decent comparison to blackface films, not in the sense of using make up or superficial things but in the fact that it's implying Asian actors cannot be on the same tier as white actors. Also casting Asian Indians for the Chinese and Japanese parts? Lol favoritism. This whole movie might just be a disaster.

None of these asians said anything when Xerxes was a gay black tyrannical giant leading a group of "persian" ninja-barbarian retarded deformed weaklings against the handsome white greeks OR in response to news that jake gyllenhaal (jew) will be starring as the Prince of Persia (a persian prince, I would assume). So please. This isnt a new and shocking thing. Blackface is just out of style for these clubs, they've moved on, right under all your idiot noses.
"why are you guys in the united states" ARE YOU FUCKING JOKING ME!!!!?? FUCKING IGNORANT WHITE MEN WHO IN THE FIRST PLACE COLONIZED ON LANDS THAT WERE FIRST INHABITED BY INDIANS-- PEOPLE OF COLOR. I WANT TO FUCKING ASSASSINATE THAT STUPID FACE.
Exactly. The United States, Canada, "Latin America and the Caribbean" were all first inhabitted by the Indigenious Native Peoples of the Americas. He sounded really stupid there! People of Color literally built the Americas!
@cotonbriesimba IKR? I want to punch that racist "you're Chinese, so you must be from China! durhuurrr" douchebag in the face. Uh, she's an American citizen, just like you.
This a thing mostly Americans do, making a problem out of nothing. They see racism where there is none. For example the KFC cricket commercials in Australia, absolutely not racist, but Americans decided to make a problem out of it anyway. Same with this bullshit. Truly ridiculous.
so from your profile, you're dutch, and you don't live in the states. how are you gonna say anything? i can't' really tell if you're an internet tough guy, a troll, or if you really believe what you say.
nah that was just the part that took the surprise out of your lack of understanding. i discarded your opinion cause you took an example that has nothing to do with what's going on here and ignored the information presented in the other videos on this channel. and you show an obvious lack of appreciation for how racism defines things here either subtly or blatantly,
I agree that Americans do make a problem out of nothing and I don't see them casting caucasians rather than asians as racist, however, the comment of all asians being killed is not only stupid, but also ignorant.
turning a blind eye on anything that you believe in means that it wont change. You dont have to agree with another persons viewpoints but it doesn't make them wrong. If anyone who has ever fought for anything in human history just shut up and accepted that things wouldnt change there would be no America and you definitely wouldnt have the ability to bash on someone elses beliefs. Remember the freedom that gives you the right to say these things and know it applies to everyone around you.
People think having films with white people as the majority ok but they should think about the effects they have on the audience
My Film Teacher said "Movies are the reflection of society and society is a reflection of our movies" Having white people claim various eastern asian cultures as their own, as if their ancestors created it in this movie, what does that say?
And society really does act that way. I have white friends who argue with me about my race a little to often for my own comfort.

Also, Avatar is NOT set in Asia. It's an Asian-themed fantasy world with one ambiguous Asian-inspired race as its primary population (this is confirmed in the show when Katara and Sokka disguise themselves as Fire Nation citizens, which implies that the only difference between Fire Nation and Water Tribe people the amount of pigmentation). Considering how riled up they are, many racebenders are surprisingly ignorant about the franchise.
"Also, Lord of the Rings is NOT set in Northern Europe. It's an European-themed fantasy world with one ambiguous European-inspired race as its primary population." You see the problem? The characters lived in a White European world, so they were rightfully casted with white actors. Also, you can actually do what you said in East Asia. Can you tell an German American from a French American. No, they are "white". Same with Asians Americans.

"Yellowface" is in reference to making a white person look Asian through makeup, which this movie is clearly NOT doing. They cast an actor who is appears to be mixed Caucasian and Asian, but apparently that's not good enough, even though he looks like the character from the show.
Also, racebending's website has a rather racist looking manip of what Aang "would have looked like if here were white" in the cartoon. These people aren't exactly saints, despite their self-righteous crusading.
There is no mixed. You need to watch more Anime or get your eyes checked. Also, your saying that Sokka and Katara from the show are white people? And Zuko form the show was obviously Indian? We also did the manip to make fun of how the public perceives what qualifies as "Asian" VS "European". AKA you have to make it so obvious that it becomes racist. They don't want that so of course that is why they look the way they do on the show.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Katara and Sokka obviously weren't white, but they weren't Inuit either despite their culture largely resembling it (most Inuits are fair skinned, whereas the water tribes of the show were brown skinned, like some Latinos). Does that mean that that the best option was to cast white actors in the roles? Nope. But casting the actors they did is hardly worthy of the fire and brimstone it receives considering their characters had a made up race, even though brown skinned actors would be preferable.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
As for Aang, if it's true that Noah Ringer is part Asian then a lot of the fuss will be for nothing. He's NOT wearing makeup so it does not meet the definition of yellowface by any stretch of the imagination. So he has double eyelids, but guess what? Most East-Asians do, despite what we see a lot of in Western media. Saying "this kid should have played Aang because he's 100% full blooded Asian" even though Noah Ringer looks the part better seems kind of biased to me.
Even if he is part asian, that doesn't change the fact that he would be and looks predominantly caucasian- which is the ethnicity the casting director of TLA is prioritizing over minorities. IMO, Noah Ringer does not look the part better. To me and many other people besides, he and the rest of the cast actually looks pretty awkward in clothes/surroundings that are obviously from vastly different cultures.
@kaypain: What may seem small to you, may be significant to others. This is not the first time on race has been replaced with another. Egyptians =/= pale folk. Native Americans =/= white people w/tans. Caucasians =/= Asians.
If you think I'm being one-sided, look at Queen of the Damned. The original protagonist was pale as shit, but they replaced her with Aaliyah, who was Black. While I loved Aaliyah (as a singer) they should've stuck to the book.
I own most of Anne Rice's books and never once pictured Akasha to be "pale as $#!+". Not necessarily as dark as Aaliyah but being the queen of Kemet (by way of Mid-East) I always imagined her as a woman of color.
That's a very good question to have asked the casting directors for those films. If they could've gotten extras to be played by NAs then presumably there shouldn't have been a shortage of NAs to play the lead roles. That was the case with Sandrine Holt in Black Robe and Mizuo Peck in Night at the Museum and its sequel.
Yes but there is no "shortage" of Asians to play Asian Roles. Also, there are a lot more Native American actors than you think, enough that whole films have been done just with Native American people. Problem is...*drum roll*...they rarely get any work. Hollywood is too busy trying to pass off Jewish people as Native American to notice...

When did race become confide to the writing language? It's normal for a Asian to learn the English language but it's not normal for a guy of a different race to learn Asian language?
They are pretty much using racism to protest racism...
You hear the Asian girl, she thought this was kind of silly, and I agree
You think it's silly? This is a show with blatant Asian themes. They took the main characters who look East Asian or Inuit, and replaced them with fucking Jasper from Twilight, and used the token card by throwing in Dev Patel.
In this day and age when it's easy to discover someone to properly portray these characters, it should be done. If it were a book with no specifications on how the characters look, fine. But, there are physical images showing the way the creators wanted them to look.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
well yes it's silly to me. Because one it's nothing but a movie, a form of entertainment that doesn't benefit anyone but the famous fortunate ones getting the capital for it.
I see homeless people on streets every day, I see violence on the streets every day. There are many things wrong with this world, people loosing jobs, wars escalating, etc... and this little controversy is on the bottom of the shoe. It's tedious and it never ends. So therefore it's silly to me.
Wow...that second part was irrelevant. Are you trying out for Ms/Mr. America? Again, here you go jumping to conclusions as if these people are saying that this issue > EVRYTHANG. No, no one said that. There are causes out there with hoards of people supporting it, trying to fix the aforementioned societal problems.
As for why they decided to make a movie, why not? This is probably one of the best animated series of this decade (imo), I think it deserves its own movie, unlike shitty Twilight.
Dev Patel can't rly be considered lead since he's the main ANTAGONIST. And now everyone from the Fire Nation (the bad guys) are "darker" than the other nations. So now they are saying dark skin = bad, evil people.
It's not just only writing, but it's one piece of writing. Considering also that Avatar is a mid-evil Asian world, you did not really see Thailand writing in Chinese everywhere, the majority language was Thai.
i know it implies prejudice, but that dude in the vid deserves it..he needs to get smacked by someone everytime he makes a stupid comment that doesnt pertain to the topic at hand!
I get what you're saying, but when you're exposed to such racist ideas from all sorts of people in your everyday lives, I think you kind of have an excuse to vent sometimes. I've heard all sorts of racial slurs targeting me and/or my family; it gets pretty tedious.
I hope the whole documentary gets done! This could be very interesting. Why is it that we have to be politically correct and give black people leading roles, their own shows, etc., but Asians are expected to disappear into the woodwork. Granted, I think any kind of collectivist thinking is wrong (even when black people do it), but to take characters that are clearly Asian and try to make white kids run around in Asian garb as Asian characters is wrong.
@shounenbat510 Continued: If a white actor was cast as Fat Albert, we'd all be up in arms because of the insensitivity, yet it's fine to cast, say, Katara and Sokka as white actors?
Ahhh... unbiased, progressive, sensitive, liberal Hollywood.
I really enjoy what The Last Airbender says about presumptions that the media elites have about people in "flyover country".
The success of Avatar: The Last Airbender as a cartoon was partly because the characters were non-white. The exotic locales helped the viewers get lost in the story (well, exotic by comparison, if you're living in a 10 story high-rise our a cookie cutter pre-fabbed suburbanite domicile).
While the white gent who asked, "Why are you in the United States?" is - it goes without saying - a disgusting little human being, his was not the comment that hits one in the craw. He is after all the cretinaceous baboon of the type most people will be familiar with if they have walked this earth long enough. No, the one who really gets you is that lady at the end... she who thought it was "silly". What a terribly sad thing.
Media today includes whites and blacks, but how many includes asians as a leading role. (none) It is all thanks to Traitors like the"silly" lady, who pushes our race/community down whenever we have a leg up in society. I want a future where I can go to my white friends family gathering and not feel like a black sheep. But somehow, I feel a whole lot more comfortable hangin with my black, hispanic, or asian friends and all their families/community. (Why is that silly lady???) :(
I wouldn't blame her completely; sometimes if you're Asian, you just want to be seen as a model minority, never protesting against injustices because that would generate negative attention. Calling her a "traitor" because we're forced into being obedient, quiet, and voiceless by society is uncalled for.
HAHA!!!! You wasted ur Christmas calling people out when they paid no attention to this thread and having fun with their families like normal human-beings. Sucka! my work here is done. : P
What I don't get is why he thinks he's special. Anyone who is not Native American is an immigrant, and by his logic, should be asked the same question. Classic case of idiot-syndrome.
The woman kills me. KILLS ME. It's like, do you honestly comprehend what's being done?
See, that's what you get by not properly reading the comment. What does my comment have to the protesters' comment? I simply countered Idiot Man's question.

You don't see black people working in an Chinese restaurant now do you? The odds of that is extremely rare Why? Because Chinese is preference race... what? a Black person can't learn how to cook Chinese food. Yet they are on here protesting antipathy against Asians in the casting of a little dumb movie we don't even need. Honestly, do we need a Live Action movie of this cartoon show? What benefit do we get out this movie? Even if they casted the right races, what benefit would it bring???
I, as a Black person, would love to know how to cook Chinese food, but why is it rare to see one behind the counter? Well, there's this thing called cul-chu-rul dif-er-ranses. Would you, whatever ethnicity you are, feel more comfortable increasing your skill at cooking food you have been eating/preparing for most of your life, or learning a totally different style of cooking?
There is nothing to say that Black people can't make American Chinese food. Hell we have black chefs that make a variety of food from all over the world, even authentic Chinese dishes. The reason you don't see many Black people working at a Chinese Restaurant is because that is what the system tells poor Chinese Immigrants to do. Same way how being a Rapper is what the system tells black people to do. Never mind the racism on both and all sides.
We have. A lot. If you read our stuff you can easily see that. Also in the full interview, I say that a lot. It's not here in this because this is a TRAILER.
The acquiescence - or even complicity (Shymalan) - of people of color to whitewashing and similar practices is perhaps the saddest aspect of all of this.
Why are YOU in the United States? Just because your ancestors beat, raped, tortured and murdered the First Nations people doesn't give you anymore right to be here than any other immigrant group.
Somebody needs to hit that douche with a clue-by-four.
I hope this movie gets great attendtion, because I believe whites are not the universal image in all movies, and that they are not the last Samurai, Last Mohiecan, and certainly last airbender, and no they are not Prince of Perisa, Goku, Akira, Spike from Cowboy bebop, guy in "kung Fu" that was all Bruce lee, Kyo from KOF, and if all those guys are white, then white people must like watching white people a lot, and they argue that thoes movie was'nt racist.
The argument is that the Last Air Bender is a fantasy, so why can't the main roles go to white people?
It's proof of white dominance whenever something is debatable, the conclusion is that white is the answer.
To deny this phenomenon and white dominance reminds me of an ep of the Simpsons where Marge tells Homer he has an anger-management problem. He denies it.
Then Marge says "Sure you do. You're punching the cat right now".
(Sorry: Had to inject some humour on an otherwise grim topic.)
Of course, white bashing is wrong. But so is UNacknowledged white dominance & white privilege.
Minorities speaking out isn't meant to be an all-out hate-fest against white folks just like when a woman speaks out for gender equality she's not hating men.
But in addressing the dominant party (in North America it's whites & males), someone's toes are gonna get stepped on & that sucks. But saying nothing sucks too.
Thank god there are SOME white people educated enough to understand this.
He fails to see that many different people (not just whites... & black slaves) built the United States, hence many different people should be allowed in the United States.
I'd like to see a casting of Superman in Asia and white people people being rejected for the Superman role because everybody agrees that Superman is Asian just like how people think Aang is white here.
I don't understand how the default race for most roles is white. If the reverse is done in any other country it somehow would be more obvious... but, how obvious can you get??? I'm amazed at how race is still such an issue in American media. Which is sad because the industry here is the best. It really is.
I was expecting a 'Git itta 'ar cuntry!!11'. I'd say what's more silly is that bundled up asian girl's lack of perspective. Keep that beautiful tradition (stereotype) that Asians can be walked all over on cause it's just so very silly.
He was a dumb ass though... "why are u in the united states?" Cause they were born here!! Its RAPING of race and there for it is WRONG. I HATE STUPID PEOPLE!!!
If you guys really want to show Hollywood that you won't take any more of their racist shit, hurt them where it hurts the most and that is their bank accounts. They'll get message. Protesting alone won't convince them.
i dont really care about the race but the movie should have at least had good acting and dialogue which m.night failed at

As long as the people at hollywood didn't intend for there to be a "white only" cast, then it shouldn't be that much of a deal. Without many of the minorities or "imigrants" a lot of us wouldn't be here, we all have little traces of our ancestors, I don't like hollywood, but I also don't really mind who they casted, it's just the outward appearances that we descriminate, despite who we really are. it seems by some of the comments people have made, they'd be cool with a fat albert remake being done with an all-white cast, just as long as they're capable of acting the part of an african american character. what does that really convey...how exactly does a white person do a good job at being black? would people have been totally cool if we had substituted asian, latino, or african american actors for any of the other cartoon remakes like alvin and the chipmunks, the flintstones, the jetsons?

You want them to cast people in the movie because of their race, instead of whether or not they're the best for the part? =/
The entire boycott is, in my opinion, completely ridiculous. The fact that the characters in the cartoon series were asians should not mean that those in the film HAVE to be asian. What matters is that they can really play the part of the character. You're focusing on race far too much.

@iCrazyStaff Your whole premise is based on the fact you believe white actors are the more talented then the hundres (or thousand) of eligible asian actors that have could have played this asian inspired role.

The asian lady who said the protest is silly was hillarious. Im not asian but i still find the casting to be offensive. Im a big fan of the cartoon and never once assumed that any of the characters were white since they could read chinese characters and in real life could speak it. People don't seem to realize the underlying issue in this movie and others like it is that you would never see a Black person or Asian person in the role of someone like George Washington. In fact, people who are white would feel uncomfortable with that and yet we are so accepting of white people taking on the roles of other races--even if better actors CAN be found to portray them.
wallflower20307 1 year ago
@wallflower20307 - As a white person and a supporter of racebending's ideals, I have to say I have aboslutely NO problem with non-whites starring in lead roles/being heroes/protagonists and greatly enjoy creating characters of ALL backgrounds for my own stories - always have. There's plenty of whites that aren't "uncomfortable" with non-whites in the lead of a story... The problem is that it's ASSUMED all of us would be uncomfortable and the studios pander to that mentality. That frustrates me.
DalishRanger 1 year ago
@DalishRanger Agreed. There's plenty of whites that aren't "uncomfortable", just as there's plenty of non-whites that don't care whether there's non-white actors in movies. However, the prevalence of certain "ideals" is carried in every aspect of entertainment. Whether it's on the cover of a magazine or in a movie. There's an "ideal" for how our actors should look. Unfortunately people like us don't voice our opinions & preferences, leaving it up to marketing people to decide what we see.

TheBlondeyBoy 1 year ago
I know it was based in asian culture..and I'm also pissed about the whitewashing, but Katara and Sokka were supposed to be Inuit, while Aang was quite obviously white. There were MANY different races, for it took place in a large world from the south pole to the north, and it kinda irks me when you try to make this all about asians..

PacoJalapeno7 1 year ago
This comment has received too many negative votes show
Therefore the Waterbenders are even a mix of nationalities.
PacoJalapeno7 1 year ago
@PacoJalapeno: Yes, it is a made up world, a made up world rooted strongly in Asian culture, so why would the people who inhabit it be white? You don't see Aang as Asian because he doesn't have any Asian stereotypes, like yellow skin or slanty eyes. Believe it or not, not all Asian people have bright yellow skin. Google it, there are some videos addressing it here on YouTube as well. ....Continued...
JWolps 1 year ago 3

This whole event is being blow way out of proportion but it still doesn't make it acceptable to cast people of a completely opposite race as the characters they're portraying. In a way it is a decent comparison to blackface films, not in the sense of using make up or superficial things but in the fact that it's implying Asian actors cannot be on the same tier as white actors. It's a mix of Asian cultures blended into one. Chinese, Japanese, Thai, Korean etc.
Consider me stupid for thinking that the casting of the film should probably reflect that.

Timstuff 2 years ago

Timstuff 2 years ago
There is no mixed. You need to watch more Anime or get your eyes checked. Also, your saying that Sokka and Katara from the show are white people? And Zuko form the show was obviously Indian? We also did the manip to make fun of how the public perceives what qualifies as "Asian" VS "European". AKA you have to make it so obvious that it becomes racist. They don't want that so of course that is why they look the way they do on the show.
Sidepocket2600 2 years ago

Katara and Sokka obviously weren't white, but they weren't Inuit either despite their culture largely resembling it (most Inuits are fair skinned, whereas the water tribes of the show were brown skinned, like some Latinos). Does that mean that that the best option was to cast white actors in the roles? Nope. But casting the actors they did is hardly worthy of the fire and brimstone it receives considering their characters had a made up race, even though brown skinned actors would be preferable.
Timstuff 2 years ago

As for Aang, if it's true that Noah Ringer is part Asian then a lot of the fuss will be for nothing. He's NOT wearing makeup so it does not meet the definition of yellowface by any stretch of the imagination. So he has double eyelids, but guess what? Most East-Asians do, despite what we see a lot of in Western media. Saying "this kid should have played Aang because he's 100% full blooded Asian" even though Noah Ringer looks the part better seems kind of biased to me.
Timstuff 2 years ago
Even if he is part asian, that doesn't change the fact that he would be and looks predominantly caucasian- which is the ethnicity the casting director of TLA is prioritizing over minorities. IMO, Noah Ringer does not look the part better. To me and many other people besides, he and the rest of the cast actually looks pretty awkward in clothes/surroundings that are obviously from vastly different cultures.

If you think I'm being one-sided, look at Queen of the Damned. The original protagonist was pale as shit, but they replaced her with Aaliyah, who was Black. While I loved Aaliyah (as a singer) they should've stuck to the book.
TakeshiKyashuri 2 years ago
I own most of Anne Rice's books and never once pictured Akasha to be "pale as $#!+". Not necessarily as dark as Aaliyah but being the queen of Kemet (by way of Mid-East) I always imagined her as a woman of color.

TakeshiKyashuri 2 years ago 2
@TakeshiKyashuri
Enseni 2 years ago
Yes but there is no "shortage" of Asians to play Asian Roles. Also, there are a lot more Native American actors than you think, enough that whole films have been done just with Native American people. Problem is...*drum roll*...they rarely get any work. Hollywood is too busy trying to pass off Jewish people as Native American to notice...

well yes it's silly to me.

We are protesting the white washing of the movie, meaning both the Asian and Yupik people who were white washed are a part of it.
Sidepocket2600 2 years ago
@kaypain42 yeah exactly the creators said the characters are based off of asian and inuit ethnicities.

why are u guys in the united states???
wtf, u racist cracker, what does that have to do with the protest..
jayxiongsta 2 years ago 4
Saying the word "cracker" implies prejudice. You gotta practice what you preach, even though he's an asshole.
TakeshiKyashuri 2 years ago
i know it implies prejudice, but that dude in the vid deserves it..he needs to get smacked by someone everytime he makes a stupid comment that doesnt pertain to the topic at hand!
jayxiongsta 2 years ago 2
I get what you're saying, but when you're exposed to such racist ideas from all sorts of people in your everyday lives, I think you kind of have an excuse to vent sometimes. I've heard all sorts of racial slurs targeting me and/or my family; it gets pretty tedious.

ahhhh! can't believe some of the things that were said..

Yes! Finally a chance to show my mom what the problem is with this movie.
Wrightstone25 2 years ago 2
I hope the whole documentary gets done! This could be very interesting. Why is it that we have to be politically correct and give black people leading roles, their own shows, etc., but Asians are expected to disappear into the woodwork. Granted, I think any kind of collectivist thinking is wrong (even when black people do it), but to take characters that are clearly Asian and try to make white kids run around in Asian garb as Asian characters is wrong.
shounenbat510 2 years ago 2
@shounenbat510 Continued: If a white actor was cast as Fat Albert, we'd all be up in arms because of the insensitivity, yet it's fine to cast, say, Katara and Sokka as white actors?
shounenbat510 2 years ago
Ahhh... unbiased, progressive, sensitive, liberal Hollywood.
I really enjoy what The Last Airbender says about presumptions that the media elites have about people in "flyover country".
The success of Avatar: The Last Airbender as a cartoon was partly because the characters were non-white. The exotic locales helped the viewers get lost in the story (well, exotic by comparison, if you're living in a 10 story high-rise our a cookie cutter pre-fabbed suburbanite domicile).
bar1scorpio 2 years ago 4
While the white gent who asked, "Why are you in the United States?" is - it goes without saying - a disgusting little human being, his was not the comment that hits one in the craw. He is after all the cretinaceous baboon of the type most people will be familiar with if they have walked this earth long enough. No, the one who really gets you is that lady at the end... she who thought it was "silly". What a terribly sad thing.
encephalong 2 years ago 10
Media today includes whites and blacks, but how many includes asians as a leading role. (none) It is all thanks to Traitors like the"silly" lady, who pushes our race/community down whenever we have a leg up in society. I want a future where I can go to my white friends family gathering and not feel like a black sheep. But somehow, I feel a whole lot more comfortable hangin with my black, hispanic, or asian friends and all their families/community. (Why is that silly lady???) :(
CliffordLam 2 years ago 8
I wouldn't blame her completely; sometimes if you're Asian, you just want to be seen as a model minority, never protesting against injustices because that would generate negative attention. Calling her a "traitor" because we're forced into being obedient, quiet, and voiceless by society is uncalled for.
rubyseeds 2 years ago 5
HAHA!!!! You wasted ur Christmas calling people out when they paid no attention to this thread and having fun with their families like normal human-beings. Sucka! my work here is done. : P
CliffordLam 2 years ago
What I don't get is why he thinks he's special. Anyone who is not Native American is an immigrant, and by his logic, should be asked the same question. Classic case of idiot-syndrome.
The woman kills me. KILLS ME. It's like, do you honestly comprehend what's being done?

well the protesters are saying most of the characters are "Asian"........ they didn't say anything about Natives or other races...
kaypain42 2 years ago
See, that's what you get by not properly reading the comment. What does my comment have to the protesters' comment? I simply countered Idiot Man's question.

You don't see black people working in an Chinese restaurant now do you? The odds of that is extremely rare Why? Because Chinese is preference race... what? a Black person can't learn how to cook Chinese food. Yet they are on here protesting antipathy against Asians in the casting of a little dumb movie we don't even need. Honestly, do we need a Live Action movie of this cartoon show? What benefit do we get out this movie? Even if they casted the right races, what benefit would it bring???
kaypain42 2 years ago
I, as a Black person, would love to know how to cook Chinese food, but why is it rare to see one behind the counter? Well, there's this thing called cul-chu-rul dif-er-ranses. Would you, whatever ethnicity you are, feel more comfortable increasing your skill at cooking food you have been eating/preparing for most of your life, or learning a totally different style of cooking?
TakeshiKyashuri 2 years ago
There is nothing to say that Black people can't make American Chinese food. Hell we have black chefs that make a variety of food from all over the world, even authentic Chinese dishes. The reason you don't see many Black people working at a Chinese Restaurant is because that is what the system tells poor Chinese Immigrants to do. Same way how being a Rapper is what the system tells black people to do. Never mind the racism on both and all sides.
Sidepocket2600 2 years ago 2
Yeah, Jamaican Chinese food is the best ;) there are many Jamaican Chinese living there, and quite a few are of mixed descent.
rubyseeds 2 years ago
We have. A lot. If you read our stuff you can easily see that. Also in the full interview, I say that a lot. It's not here in this because this is a TRAILER.

The acquiescence - or even complicity (Shymalan) - of people of color to whitewashing and similar practices is perhaps the saddest aspect of all of this.

To the Old White Dude @ 0:51-53

Sunwukong13 2 years ago 9
The argument is that the Last Air Bender is a fantasy, so why can't the main roles go to white people?
It's proof of white dominance whenever something is debatable, the conclusion is that white is the answer.
To deny this phenomenon and white dominance reminds me of an ep of the Simpsons where Marge tells Homer he has an anger-management problem. He denies it.
Then Marge says "Sure you do. You're punching the cat right now".
(Sorry: Had to inject some humour on an otherwise grim topic.)
blahmeblahblahblah 2 years ago 13

Put yourself in the other person's shoes here, old man: Why are white people like you in Asia?
818Harumi 2 years ago 7
I'd like to see a casting of Superman in Asia and white people people being rejected for the Superman role because everybody agrees that Superman is Asian just like how people think Aang is white here.
818Harumi 2 years ago 7
THIS.
I don't understand how the default race for most roles is white. If the reverse is done in any other country it somehow would be more obvious... but, how obvious can you get??? I'm amazed at how race is still such an issue in American media. Which is sad because the industry here is the best. It really is.

Oh, ouch dude...sorry that I'm half white half Asian, but I'm still boycotting this movie AND planning to major in American history.

LOL @ Old White Dude
I was expecting a 'Git itta 'ar cuntry!!11'. I'd say what's more silly is that bundled up asian girl's lack of perspective. Keep that beautiful tradition (stereotype) that Asians can be walked all over on cause it's just so very silly.

If you guys really want to show Hollywood that you won't take any more of their racist shit, hurt them where it hurts the most and that is their bank accounts. They'll get message. Protesting alone won't convince them.
