could a co2 system get put into the sump of a trickle filtration system or does it have to be directly in the aquarium? wat kind of lights are u using cuz i just got a buch of plants and im pretty sure a 19w fluorescent light bulb wont be enough =/
@jptzy Yes definitely. However it get tricky with a trickle filtration system. The overflow box usually involves a water drop and the trickle to the sump all can result in CO2 outgassing. That is not to say it can't be done.
In any case, I prefer the CO2 injected outboard so as to minimize hardware in the tank.
For lighting, I use two compact flourescent striplights (220W for this 58gal tank). See my shrimp trap video for a more recent view of the tank.
@XXGOLDENXXDRAGONXX Plants need CO2 for photosynthesis. If you want lush plants in your aquarium diffusing CO2 into the water column is one part of the equation.
What is the pH controllers function in you setup? Does it measure the pH of your water and adjust or how does its pH get adjusted?/ or does i t control co2 automatically to control pH?
@videodude4 You can set it to shut off at a certain pH. If I were to do it again, I would not buy the controller. You can set a bubble rate and take serial pH measurements. You can easily find a bubble rate where the pH won't drop past your target.
pet stores that carry this crap are outrageously priced. try buying one on the internet OR check out your local welders supply, you will find alot of the expensive pet store stuff for much more reasonable prices. they wont have everything but its definatly worth a try. also these places employ hillbillies alot that might look at you like your crazy after you tell then what your doing lol
My current system will scale up to about a 400gal tank. Just instead of the red sea reactor, I use an external (passive) reactor (Aquamedics AM1000). After you get your system, it is only about $20/year for CO2.
your is 58 gallon and the red sea 500 seems to be working for you. how long before you turn the co2 before turning the lights on. i am having some issue with my red sea 500 not diffusing enough co2 in the 50g.
@happisonu - ultimately the red sea proved to be inadequate. I would only recommend it for a 30g max. The problem is, if the intake becomes clogged, efficiency is markedly reduced--it requires weekly cleaning which I didn't want. I ended up going with an external reactor (see video response above).
Some plants are hard to grow without it. Even easy plants grow great with it. My feeling is that the controller is unnecessary. Just get a cylinder, regulator/solenoid/needle.valve/bubble.counter... about $150-200 but after that, the yearly costs are minimal.
Could i ask you some question. How to keep your plants health without moss growing over the leaf? my tank about 40g and i have Co2 system with 156watts of light but i don't know why, all my leaf of plants had moss growing over the leaf . Your plants so nice and healhty, no moss growing on the leaf. Are you using any medical of plants to make the moss can't growing on the leaf? or the water cloud to make the moss growing on the leaf or the light too hight t? Please help me. Thanks
I dunno. Never had problems with moss growing on leaves. They do creep all over my anubias but are easy to peel off. I have to prune my moss heavily every month or so. What I have a problem with are moss fragments all over the tank floor and taking growth after a prune.
maybe to show what a co2 injector for an aquarium looks like and how he has his/hers set up. bragging is calling your fish tank the best in the world and awesome when you dont spend any money on it at all. watch the comedians video where he keeps a small fish tank with gouramis and common fish. hes a jackass bragger.
For the cylinder, I would check out a local welding shop. the reason is, they can supply the CO2 and most have a cylinder swap program so you don't need to get the cylinder certified every 5 years. A 10lb cylinder costs about $120, but only costs $20 to refill. That might last you up to a year at 1-2 bubbles/second. The regulator , solenoid, bubble counter can be had from ebay or online supplier. Milwaukee is a good basic starter setup.
WARNING: make sure you have a check valve to the CO2 inlet on the Red Sea reactor--without one, the pump in the unit will backflow water and empty nearly your entire tank! A check valve is included with the device.
Discus fish are much more demanding than what I have--you are elite in your own way. My rockbass and bluegill eat just about everything and didn't blink an eye when my I forgot to turn my filter on after a water change! They would love some plants though! Just do it!
You guys were right. I got my 130W power compact lighting on the 55g today. It's merely adequate. Definitely doesn't call for shades. If the opportunity presents itself at some point I'm going to at least double the wattage on this tank.
You will get by with some basic plants with 2W/gal light. You need the CO2 though. If you have a robust canister filter, I recommend the AquaMedic (aka Aqualine Buschke) Reactor 1000 for CO2 diffusion. It gets great reviews and I can personally vouch for the efficiency since I have been running it for the past 2 weeks.
why did read sea put the power cable on the bottom of the reactor? it would make more sense to put it in thru the top..

will that c02 reactor work with DIY co2 bottles?
liq0urish 3 years ago
Yes. Unlike ceramic disc diffusers, it does not require CO2 to be pressurized. It would be very efficient with a DIY CO2 yeast system.

I will run with this light a little while but will almost certainly be upgrading to at least 260W.
Current USA makes an Orbit fixture in this length that is 4x130W. 520W on a 55 gallon tank! Would that not be sick or what?
