He only does that because you trained him to growl at the thought of you taking his food away. I have a Lhasa and she's 2 years old now. The first few times she did that, I told her "no" and took the treat away. Of course, I gave it back to her. But, I would keep taking it away until she stopped growling ...when my hand was near the food. Ever since that, she trust that I will give her treat back and does not growl anymore.
