Only in London would a band not unlike The Residents get appreciation. Here in Daytona Beach, they'd get booed off the stage if they even sold any tickets.
Don't get me wrong, I love The Residents but most of the world are interested in Motley Crue cover bands.
I've got some friends who are in a trio called Sneakin' Out. They preform the entire Sgt. Pepper's Album, sometimes with horns and strings, maybe a sitar, but usually solo and instrumental, the audience provides any vocals.
The trio is a mandolin, acoustic bass guitar and percussionist. The Percussionist is insane, playing hand drums, noise makers, typewriters, glockenspiel, xylophone and what ever he can get his hands on. Their version of this rules. I do love the Residents though.
@anonymouswillnotstop I agree. Like Eddie Izzards's under rated-version this performance is probably closer in spirit to how the song should have been performed. That said, the Beatles version is brilliantly produced, just not very well sung.
I was at this concert!!! Amazing stuff. They played just one song in a big program that was a tribute to The Beatles' "Sergeant Pepper's". They were the best, useless to say! And Peter Murphy of the Bauhaus was having pics with them in the backstage later on :D
wonderfull first time iv heard them tday iv seen them about in the music press 4 years rite back 2 late 70s can not 4 the life of me think why iv not listend 2 them before mesmerising
Not at all. Don't get me wrong, I love The Beatles version, and John deserves all the credit for writing such a great song. The only thing I don't like about The Beatles version is the delivery of the vocals. In my opinion, this song needs that carnival barker delivery that The Residents do.
@JerseyBearanus Paul wouldve gone that obvious route- Lennon's vocal is very echoey-cool! Gives it a creepier sense- that something sinister might be going on behind the tent!
@JerseyBearanus i suppose it would have been a little better if he did that, but that's like touching up the Mona Lisa, it's already a 100% masterpiece
What an absolute waste of time and an orchestra. San Francisco is a void of self abuse. I assume that is where this travesty took place. Who cares, actually?
Of course it's Homer Flynn behind the skull. There's a clip from The Residents Radio Special from 1977 with Homer being the DJ but using a fake name (Syd Powel) where he interviews fellow Resident Jay Clem. His voice there is very similar to the skull guy in this video.
He's someone, alright. Much like you, but not you because that would be silly. Entirely different, but in form and function he is similar. Only, I suppose he differs in a fundamental way, being that he is aware of who he is and you are not. That, or I suppose I took too much of the green acid. Who are you again?
Love the way he yells "Mister kiiiiiiiite!!!!" at the end. One of my favourite Beatles tunes. It seems its against the law to write songs that imaginative these days . hahahaha
Well how are you? Hello if you have the time could you listen to Nicotine Toothpaste on my page it's only a demo and needs a lot of improvement but this is just a chance to see what people think in the early stages of writin thanks.
It's like somebody took a great Beatles track, got a really fantastic group of musicians to perform it and then shouted the lyrics whilst wearing a mask!
just AWESOME! I'm waiting for the DVD of "The Bunny Boy", 2 friends of mine went to the concert in Rome... when they came back they were like "OH... MY... DOG!!!"
Why not? Keyboard mag told Residents were in the nineties betatesters for many synths, and I guess they made cd-roms earlier than most others. And isn´t that sampling on the first album, that Chubby Checker bit "let´s twist again" stomach muscles! For certain kind of humour they were the first too.
Wasn't putting the boot in, was merely surprised to see The Residents embracing "convenient" new tech (the kind of thing I expect half-arsed techno DJs to do). Got no probs with sampling/whatever, The Residents've made a l-o-n-g career out of skitting other folks' work afterall!
Hmmm.... I didn't like this at first, then I realized the "singer" is doing more of a carnival barker delivery, which sort of works more than Lennon's stoner interpretation, given the lyrics.
Note to idiots below-that's the one and only Homer Flynn singing-no one can imitate him nor would they. Hardy's at the computer........this isn't a wild mystery/conspiracy here folks.....
I just discovered this band tonight. I love it!! I also love the Beatles, and there are few covers that actually do them justice. This one is Amazing. What's good to buy from The Residents??
I'm sure if you ask 10 different fans you'll get 10 different answers. But I honestly think a good starter is their 2-CD compilation "Our Tired, Our Poor, Our Huddled Masses". It spans the bulk of their career, has excellent liner notes, and includes some of their other great covers too like Jailhouse Rock, Hit The Road Jack, This is a Man's World, Kawliga, etc.
This is awesome! I jus saw them on Oct 12th. It was the coolest thing I've ever seen.
By the way for all of you fighting over whether Homer is the singing Rez or not. Why do you care?
If you see The Bunny Boy show you'll know it's not Homer. He's unmasked. If you care about who they are, you're just detracting from their allure and mystery.
Thanks for uploading this. My husband always raved about The Residents' live shows he saw and I had a hard time visualizing the whole concept. Gotta say that this footage is great: the remake, the handheld cam, especially the singer! Thank you.
No, Jealkeja, the idea here is that Beatles fans who act like you are more likely to ruin this song for anyone who likes it for fear of being affiliated with stupid, closed-minded fucks.

Uhh, you'd have to be closed-minded to believe that this song has any artistic quality at all. There is no interpretation, just a mimicking of sounds. I haven't listened to any of their other songs, but this one just sounds like they're playing the original song badly.
Just really, the entire point of The Residents. Their decommercialization of music, their goal to seperate "pop" from what they make, it's ultimately a very intellectual thing to achieve and they do things /differently/. I suppose you're justified if you haven't heard the rest of their songs (though I think it's played very well, mind you. The recording doesn't do it justice), but dismissing a group based on this video is a little rash.
"Ruined this song?" Au contraire, I do believe that is one of the points of what The Residents do.
