  • Greatest. Finish. Ever.

  • That left bend... Man dit you see that one? that was one awsome move in the left bend! Did you see how they both turned into the left bend, and they fed it up! How can you f something up on a roundabout?

  • @Sj1bby Shut the fuck up and show a shred of respect for these legends you fucken euro.

  • Now that's racing!

    Never say never!

  • fkn dirty pearson! took petys arse end out! no doubt!!

  • I can see where they got the final CARS race now...

  • and not one single word was spoken betwween the 2 because of how much respect they had for eachother... dang

  • petty looked over the finish line ffs!! lol

  • Dump the B.S. restrictor plates, put them on rock hard tires and you'll see some real racing!

  • Man that has to be Frustrating to see david crawl to the finish line and you can see it lol

  • Now THIS is a race.

You know that Pearson and Petty shook hands afterwards, too. Outside of straight dirty tactics, you do what you have to do to get to the finish line first.

  • Brian France has 4 accounts.

  • Rear vision mirror lol

  • Seriously, anyone who thinks huge "Big One" packs are needed is smoking weed. This was the glory days, the days of real racing, at Daytona International Speedway. It's only the morons who need big crashes to watch that want the restrictor plates on the cars.

  • I was at this race. I had infield passes and was behind Petty's pit crew. I was mad! Years later I met Benny Parsons in a Cracker Barrell in Brunswick, GA and told him I thought he was going to win again. Benny explained to me the reason Petty still got second was Parsons was a lap down. Petty and Pearson were the only cars on the lead lap at the time. This race, '79. and '98 are all time classics!

  • congrats to the wood brothers fifth daytona win way to go 2/20/11

  • Looks like bayne gordon wreck

  • This would have indeed been the greatest NASCAR finish ever were it not for the finish of the 1979 edition of the "500".

  • undoubtedly the best daytona 500 finish ever.nobody raced harder than david pearson did.no fear that man had.and i do agree with an earlier comment that if ya put him and jimmie johnson on the same track tomorrow pearson would beat the shit outta him no question.truly one of the greats in NASCAR.

  • Drop the plates and put up a bigger fence.

  • this is what i call racin'

  • Racing today sucks compared to pre-plate racing.

  • does anyone have the full race????

  • This is pretty sweet. Richard Petty has his own Cameo Star and now you can send the King to your friends on Facebook!

  • Pearson rules. Nothing against Petty but Pearson in the Wood Bros. Mercury was the best combination in NASCAR history.

  • THAT WAS AMAZING

  • I love how the crew runs out into the grass and pushes him across the line. I couldnt begin to imagin what NASCAR would do today if a crew pulled something like that.

  • What a classic finish.

  • The people at this race got their money's worth!

  • probably got more then there moneys worth what a shxow

  • i watched this race on tv but was at the 74 Firecracker which was another classic Pearson/Petty duel that Pearson also won. no question Pearson was the greatest driver ever in NASCAR. Earnhart could only wish he was as good as Pearson. NASCAR today sucks. all these male model spoiled brats and way over board commercialization ruined the sport. restrictor plate racing sucks. bring the 429 427 426 back. those were monster cars. they sounded badass, not like supercharged vacuum cleaners.

  • @lukegreen1956

I couldn't have said it better myself. I can't stand the "GQ" sissies that make up most of the field in Nascar today. I also would love to see the big block hemis on the high banks again.

  • We lost the play-by-play man who called this finish in 2007. Bill Flemming, a true gentleman.

  • all the older era race drivers is the best.. im with doctorindy saying that nowadays it is shit. fuck the nextel cup its winston cup and fuck the other one its busch series. FUCK YOU COMMERCIALIST BASTARDS!! FUCK YOU FUCK YOU FUCK YOU FUCK YOU FUCK YOU IN THE ASS HOLE!

  • This finish was better than anything in the restrictor plate era. 2007 was garbage compared to this.

Also note, after losing, Petty climbs out of the car smiling. The punk young gun crybabies of today would whine and fight. Petty had class. It say a lot because winning was much more important back then for guys like Petty...they had to win to be able to pay the bills.

  • @doctorindy Couldn't have said it any better myself!

  • Great race, greater finish, awesome. As for comparing the drivers, I think Pearson could have hopped in a car like Johnson has today and win 36 races. If Johnson and the young punks in NASCAR today had to drive a car like Pearson and Petty drove, they would do something else for a living. It's just a totally different sport today. With that said, I liked it back then, and I still like it today, though the rules aggrevate me.

  • Who was the car that David Pearson hit when he spun down the track? I know its the car they pass in Turn 3, but who was it?

  • Joe Frasson.

  • THE CAR WAS JOES FRASSONS CHEVY I HAVE A BOOK ABOUT THE 1976 Daytona 500

  • The 1976 Daytona "500" was held on the final day of the 1976 Winter Olympics.

ABC carried 30 minutes of live coverage of the start, then switched to the Olympics for an hour-and-a-half to carry taped coverage of the final two competitive events (a cross-country ski race and the final runs in the bobsled), held earlier that day.

Then it was back to Daytona for about an hour-and-a-half for the finish.

  • who were the announcers?

  • Bill Flemming and Jackie Stewart. I saw this finish live when I was 11 years old. The greatest finish of any race ever!

  • @altfactor In fact, play-by-play man Bill Flemming was one of the few ABC sportscasters NOT at Innsbruck for the 1976 Winter Olympics. Howard Cosell may have been the only other one remaining in the 'States.

  • 2007 was definetly the best.

But I still Love this one. I remember watching it on ESPN classic years ago.

  • david pearson said "the bitch hit me" on the radio to his crew fucking crybaby

  • David Pearson could drive the hell out of a 200mph car. If they could have a race between Jimmy Johnson and the David Pearson of the late '70's in a TRUE 200MPH CAR, Pearson would whip Johnson's ass up and down the track.

  • WTF ?? Johnson SUCKS !! Its all chad and Rick man. Use your head a lil huh !!

  • it looked as if petty spun on purpose, he shoulda won

  • I think that the lead changed four times on the final lap. Now tell me that wasn't exciting.

  • Tell me that this was'nt exciting.

    Wow!

  • For all you current NASCAR fans..This is when STOCK CARS WERE STOCK CARS! Those weren't fake car bodies, facias and hoods. Those were real sheet metal parts, bumpers and hoods...only trimmed for big tires and light holes were blanked/covered.

Race on Sunday sell on Monday was the theme. Not today. Go try to buy a 2 door, rear wheel drive, V8 powered, Fusion, Impala, Intrepid or Camry. Better yet...save your time. You can't find em.

  • not a big fan of the COT myself or the way nascar has come, i wish they would just strip down the new stangs, challengers, and camaros make them safe to race and run em like real "stock car" racing.

  • They weren't STOCK...they were real race cars underneath with a tube chassis and rollcage, like they have today, but it's true that they DID use the stock bodies, real bumpers and glass windows. They looked just like a Dodge, Mercury or Chevrolet you could buy down at the dealership.

Oh, and I'm STILL trying to find the stock Toyota V8 that their stock car engine is based on. Has anybody seen one? The last V8-powered rear wheel drive car in NASCAR was the 1980's Monte Carlo SS...

  • Oh, I know!. The manufacturers were very involved in the race day. Look at Petty's Charger & Roadrunner before... the profile is super slipery by "coke bottle" design... headlights and tail lights are combined with the bumpers to minimize the wind disturbance.

Today, take the decals (headlights and grille decals NOT numbers and sponsors) there's no difference.

I heard Johnson say "all the cars are equal" and "exciting race". Afraid this generation doesn't know what real racing is....

  • Actually, The Thunderbird was still RWD with an available V8 until 1997.

Of course, the street version had a completely different block by then.

  • Ok, NASCAR FANS! This is how we had to watch the races back then. It seems like yesterday but THIS WAS THE BEST DAYTONA 500 FINISH EVER! We huddled around the TV getting antenna reception and SCREAMED at what we saw. True PETTY AND PEARSON fans and we couldn't believe what we were seeing. I get chills just watching this again. The drivers didn't whine or complain. This was true racing! Two REAL LEGENDS!

  • amazing, i personally wanted pearson to win the first time i saw this clip.

  • I was in Boy Scouts and we used to go to Darlington every spring for the Rebel 500. I saw David Pearson win 3 times: 1974, 1976, and his final career win in 1980. I was also there in 1979 when he lost his left tires coming off of pit road. The Silver Fox will always be one of the all-time greats.

  • what a finish crazy!

  • horray richard petty!

  • For the first time the Wood Brothers failed to quarifay the Daytona 500

  • silly irish

  • Pearson kept the clutch in and that inturn keep the engine running and that's how he beat Petty

  • Are you dumb? What he means by live, is that it has the original commentary during the race, obviously there wouldn't be a live race from 1976 on youtube.

  • You're the idiot. When I see the word "live" I assume it comes from the original broadcast.

You must be a Jimmie Johnson or Jeff Gordon fan.

  • Yeah I'm a Gordon fan, I'm sorry that jealousy hurts ya so much, but I shouldn't care about your feelings because you're just a stupid, dumb prick.

  • What a shocker.

Gordon fans are the NASCAR newbies who have no respect or knowledge for the sport.

  • Gordon's newbie? I didn't know that 16 years wasn't a long time, and I know quite a bit about the sport so shut the hell up.

  • I didn't say Gordon was the newbie you incompetent moron. I have connections within the sport, I doubt you do.

You're welcome to kiss my ass.

  • No I don't have any connections to the sport, if you weren't so damn stupid, it is live commentary during the race, and it says its live on the ESPN Classic showing, so its settled.

  • Yeah, those are the original graphics, not ones from ESPN.

    Get lost.

  • What the hell is wrong with you??

  • Moron

  • WHAT A FINISH THATS RACING

  • To me that almost beats the 79' 500 for the best ever finish.

  • Damn!

  • This is the first race i ever saw on tv. Its how i became a David Pearson fan.

  • Who are you a fan of now?

  • Jr,Stewart,Biffle,Kenny Shrader

  • Who is that scottish guy?

  • It's Jackie Stewart, the 3-time F1 world champion and long-time race announcer.

  • what's the other announcers name?

  • it sounds like Chris Economaki

  • Bill Fleming. He did a lot of work on ABC's Wide World of Sports in the 1960s and 1970s.

  • I thought Chris Economaki did only in the pits in the 1960's and 1970's

  • one of them was Jackie Stewart

  • yes it was jys but what was he doing in us with nascar

  • a better question is why is this "live" even though everyone says that the first live broadcast was in 1979...am i missing something

  • The 1979 race was the first time it was shown Live, Flag to flag. ABC Wide World of Sports showed the start, some of the middle portion, and the finish live, not the whole race.

  • ok thanks

  • ABC aired this live in between breaks of the

    Innsbruck Olympics,BTW!!!

  • Just because you think this was the greatest finish doesn't mean i think it was.

  • Lighten up, obviously it's my opinion. Opinions are what people post on Youtube. What is the great finish ever — in your opinion?

  • 3 finishes come to mind for me and they are 1998 Dayona 500 1999 Goody's 500 2002 Daytona 500

  • 2002 was just funny. Sterling thinking that he could get away with pulling away sheet metal was just funny.

  • Jackie's reaction to the crash was hilarious!

Also, I feel sorry for the car Pearson hit as he spun down the track, lol.

  • Oh that is awesome!!

I've seen photos of this finish....but never the video....dude you are awesome!!!!

    Thank you for posting!

  • Amen to mcqueenthee!!!!!

  • who's the european sounding like commentator?

  • The Flying Scot was the european announcer. The great Jackie Stewart was a Formula One driver way back when who won three titles and he did a world class job of announcing this — the greatest finish ever!

  • Most nascar drivers hate restrictor plate racing. but the speeds were to great. car parts were going into the stands and hurting people for one thing.i had heard last year rusty drove an unristricted car at talledega and ran a lap of 240 mph

  • Damn! - what a finish!!. Get rid of the restrictor plates right now!!

  • Where was Jim McKay? I agree it was a little strange to hear Jackie Stewart do color commentary for a NASCAR race but what a finish. Is Bill Fleming still alive?

  • I remember watching this. I was a huge David Pearson fan! Thanks for posting The Silver Fox! It was his greatest moment! King Richard was such a legendary racer!

  • "OOOOHHHH!!!" :D Yeah, I totally agree, Mr. Stewart. Beautiful clip, thanks for posting!

  • I just can't belive it! AWESOME!!!

  • Actually,Petty was allowed to keep the runner-up spot

after the penatly--at the time of the white flag,Petty

& Pearson had a 2 lap advantage on BP--as the melee off

turn 4 ensued,BP was able to get one of the laps back

by the time Pearson staggered across the the line to

take the checkers! After Petty finally got to the line,

NASCAR did take a lap from him for the assistance he

got from his crew, but he was allowed to keep 2nd place!

  • A note:

Benny Parsons did finish this race second. It was mentioned on the ABC-TV telecast that Petty beat Parsons back for second, but this was overturned, as Petty was given a one-lap penalty for the outside assistance he received after the wreck.

This is perhaps the best finish I've ever seen.

  • This is perhaps the best finish anyone has seen.

  • The King vs. the Silver Fox. It doesn't get any better kiddies. Too bad these days are long gone...

  • after they discussed it they called richard petty the winner

  • um...no they didn't...

  • What JoeytheHDK said below.

  • best...ever...

  • That finish defined a time when men were men,and not

the pampered cry babies we have today!

  • It was Pearson who screamed "the bitch hit me" to the radio crew concering the bump.

  • only nascar race that i ever heard jackie stewart, a f1 driver, do commentary in a nascar race. cool :)

  • Stewart was very entertaining in a humorous way: "What they do in

motor racing-it's called drafting. One car gets up behind another

car and gets sucked around the track!"

  • what do you mean who was the winner, david pearson was the winner

  • So who was the winner?

  • My uncle talked about this race for years..he hated Petty lol

  • David Person rocked. Who knows how many wins he would have had he ran full schedules!

  • I was there. My grandma was the biggest Petty fan ever

When they crashed, that was the only time I heard her cuss.

  • Who is commentating? Sounds like Stewart...

  • Jackie Stewart

  • Jackie Stewart & Bill Fleming

  • thanks for posting this.

  • The greatest NASCAR finish ever!!!, 03' Darlington and 79' Daytona were good but this had the 500 & Petty & Pearson

  • hahah thats fantastic

  • Great video...have never seen the actual live broadcast before, thanks for posting!!
