You know that Pearson and Petty shook hands afterwards, too. Outside of straight dirty tactics, you do what you have to do to get to the finish line first.
Seriously, anyone who thinks huge "Big One" packs are needed is smoking weed. This was the glory days, the days of real racing, at Daytona International Speedway. It's only the morons who need big crashes to watch that want the restrictor plates on the cars.
I was at this race. I had infield passes and was behind Petty's pit crew. I was mad! Years later I met Benny Parsons in a Cracker Barrell in Brunswick, GA and told him I thought he was going to win again. Benny explained to me the reason Petty still got second was Parsons was a lap down. Petty and Pearson were the only cars on the lead lap at the time. This race, '79. and '98 are all time classics!
undoubtedly the best daytona 500 finish ever.nobody raced harder than david pearson did.no fear that man had.and i do agree with an earlier comment that if ya put him and jimmie johnson on the same track tomorrow pearson would beat the shit outta him no question.truly one of the greats in NASCAR.
I love how the crew runs out into the grass and pushes him across the line. I couldnt begin to imagin what NASCAR would do today if a crew pulled something like that.
i watched this race on tv but was at the 74 Firecracker which was another classic Pearson/Petty duel that Pearson also won. no question Pearson was the greatest driver ever in NASCAR. Earnhart could only wish he was as good as Pearson. NASCAR today sucks. all these male model spoiled brats and way over board commercialization ruined the sport. restrictor plate racing sucks. bring the 429 427 426 back. those were monster cars. they sounded badass, not like supercharged vacuum cleaners.

I couldn't have said it better myself. I can't stand the "GQ" sissies that make up most of the field in Nascar today. I also would love to see the big block hemis on the high banks again.

Great race, greater finish, awesome. As for comparing the drivers, I think Pearson could have hopped in a car like Johnson has today and win 36 races. If Johnson and the young punks in NASCAR today had to drive a car like Pearson and Petty drove, they would do something else for a living. It's just a totally different sport today. With that said, I liked it back then, and I still like it today, though the rules aggrevate me.
The 1976 Daytona "500" was held on the final day of the 1976 Winter Olympics.
ABC carried 30 minutes of live coverage of the start, then switched to the Olympics for an hour-and-a-half to carry taped coverage of the final two competitive events (a cross-country ski race and the final runs in the bobsled), held earlier that day.
Then it was back to Daytona for about an hour-and-a-half for the finish.
@altfactor In fact, play-by-play man Bill Flemming was one of the few ABC sportscasters NOT at Innsbruck for the 1976 Winter Olympics. Howard Cosell may have been the only other one remaining in the 'States.
David Pearson could drive the hell out of a 200mph car. If they could have a race between Jimmy Johnson and the David Pearson of the late '70's in a TRUE 200MPH CAR, Pearson would whip Johnson's ass up and down the track.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
thats because dey didnt have restrictor plates and when jimmie drives on superspeedways he has to use a restrictor plate. David would only whip johnson because johnson has never driven a true 200MPH CAR
For all you current NASCAR fans..This is when STOCK CARS WERE STOCK CARS! Those weren't fake car bodies, facias and hoods. Those were real sheet metal parts, bumpers and hoods...only trimmed for big tires and light holes were blanked/covered.
Race on Sunday sell on Monday was the theme. Not today. Go try to buy a 2 door, rear wheel drive, V8 powered, Fusion, Impala, Intrepid or Camry. Better yet...save your time. You can't find em.
not a big fan of the COT myself or the way nascar has come, i wish they would just strip down the new stangs, challengers, and camaros make them safe to race and run em like real "stock car" racing.
They weren't STOCK...they were real race cars underneath with a tube chassis and rollcage, like they have today, but it's true that they DID use the stock bodies, real bumpers and glass windows. They looked just like a Dodge, Mercury or Chevrolet you could buy down at the dealership.
Oh, and I'm STILL trying to find the stock Toyota V8 that their stock car engine is based on. Has anybody seen one? The last V8-powered rear wheel drive car in NASCAR was the 1980's Monte Carlo SS...
Oh, I know!. The manufacturers were very involved in the race day. Look at Petty's Charger & Roadrunner before... the profile is super slipery by "coke bottle" design... headlights and tail lights are combined with the bumpers to minimize the wind disturbance.
Today, take the decals (headlights and grille decals NOT numbers and sponsors) there's no difference.
I heard Johnson say "all the cars are equal" and "exciting race". Afraid this generation doesn't know what real racing is....
Ok, NASCAR FANS! This is how we had to watch the races back then. It seems like yesterday but THIS WAS THE BEST DAYTONA 500 FINISH EVER! We huddled around the TV getting antenna reception and SCREAMED at what we saw. True PETTY AND PEARSON fans and we couldn't believe what we were seeing. I get chills just watching this again. The drivers didn't whine or complain. This was true racing! Two REAL LEGENDS!
I was in Boy Scouts and we used to go to Darlington every spring for the Rebel 500. I saw David Pearson win 3 times: 1974, 1976, and his final career win in 1980. I was also there in 1979 when he lost his left tires coming off of pit road. The Silver Fox will always be one of the all-time greats.
Are you dumb? What he means by live, is that it has the original commentary during the race, obviously there wouldn't be a live race from 1976 on youtube.
No I don't have any connections to the sport, if you weren't so damn stupid, it is live commentary during the race, and it says its live on the ESPN Classic showing, so its settled.
The 1979 race was the first time it was shown Live, Flag to flag. ABC Wide World of Sports showed the start, some of the middle portion, and the finish live, not the whole race.
The Flying Scot was the european announcer. The great Jackie Stewart was a Formula One driver way back when who won three titles and he did a world class job of announcing this — the greatest finish ever!
Most nascar drivers hate restrictor plate racing. but the speeds were to great. car parts were going into the stands and hurting people for one thing.i had heard last year rusty drove an unristricted car at talledega and ran a lap of 240 mph

turn 4 ensued,BP was able to get one of the laps back
by the time Pearson staggered across the the line to
take the checkers! After Petty finally got to the line,
NASCAR did take a lap from him for the assistance he
got from his crew, but he was allowed to keep 2nd place!
