How is this solved? The cop said they only have circumstantial evidence! They lost the only real evidence they had (toole's car and a sample of blood soaked carpet) and toole is dead. This is nothing but a publicity stunt.

That story about Toole confessing on his deathbed is very questionable. Who's to say he wasn't lying about it, and how reliable is that niece. Also, I don't know of any solid evidence besides the circumstantial that supports the claim. There's a lot more evidence that supports the theory that Jeffrey Dahmer was the perpetrator. From everything I've read and everything I know about the case, there was a LOT of evidence that Ottis Toole DID in fact kill Adam Walsh. He even wrote John a letter demanding $15,000 from him and his family and then he would say where the body was. The letter is in the book if you read it.
Ottis Toole was a lying SOB. He made that so-called death bed confession as his final act at recognition. The fact remains, nobody knows who killed Adam Walsh and the case is still unsolved 30 years later. The police are just trying to justify their existence and purge their guilt-trip for botching the case in the early stages. Cops are lying for each other to cover their asses. Adam Walsh died in VAIN and there's no amount of laws passed or hypothetical victims saved that can change this fact.

The most cogent argument to be made implicates Toole (of all the famous serial killers active at the time and in that region). Criminals for the most part are people just like you and me, they share a normal moral compass, they feel guilt, remorse, empathy, etc... On at least some level. That story about Toole confessing on his deathbed is very questionable. Who's to say he wasn't lying about it, and how reliable is that niece. Also, I don't know of any solid evidence besides the circumstantial that supports the claim. There's a lot more evidence that supports the theory that Jeffrey Dahmer was the perpetrator. Before all of you people start talking crap, you might seriously want to read "Tears of Rage" by John Walsh. Either that or read the case file about Adam. From everything I've read and everything I know about the case, there was a LOT of evidence that Ottis Toole DID in fact kill Adam Walsh. He even wrote John a letter demanding $15,000 from him and his family and then he would say where the body was. The letter is in the book if you read it.

The fact remains, nobody knows who killed Adam Walsh and the case is still unsolved 30 years later. The police are just trying to justify their existence and purge their guilt-trip for botching the case in the early stages. Cops are lying for each other to cover their asses. The most cogent argument to be made implicates Toole (of all the famous serial killers active at the time and in that region). Ottis Toole did recant twice, and evidence was lost, but there is damning circumstantial evidence against him:
- He said he slapped and hit Adam after abducting him. Adam's head did have brusing, and this fact was never made public.
- Police found green shorts and a sandal similar to the ones Adam was wearing when he vanished in Toole's home.
- Ottis Toole was driven around various towns, and he correctly identified the Sear's store Adam was taken from without being told.

Criminals for the most part are people just like you and me, they share a normal moral compass, they feel guilt, remorse, empathy, etc... On at least some level. That's what separates us from sociopaths. In order to make decisions based on whats right and wrong, you must have feelings about it, that's how humans functions, emotions are what drive us.

I cannot only imagine the horror Adam was going through, but I can say I understand it on a level most people can't. Adam was a defenseless, innocent child, it's primarily the parents job to guard and protect their children from danger and she just left him all by himself where anything could happen to him! I am so angry at the Walsh's for what they've done.

@theonlyzdog I'm a former Marine SSgt, I was in command of men I was responsible for, and if anyone was killed under my command because I "left them for a minute", I would be held 100% responsible for their death. If I said, "i'm sorry sir, I only left them there for a minute", do you think my CO would say "oh, I see, that's not your fault", or do you think I would be crucified for it?
