Watching videos such as this one gives me a better understanding of those people we all come across in public who act, sound or look different. Instead of staring, laughing or making comments..I will think back to this video and have compassion for them. none of us can fully understand what exactly they are going through. They sure didn't ask to have a mental illness. Hats off to them for having the courage to participate in this video!
You are very truthful,my father had scytzo,anger episodes,and my mother was mild mentally retarded.and i was born and as a child at age 6 i began manic episodes,they say you dont inherit it,but i was diagnosed with post traumatic stress,depresion and schytzo along with bipolar.i dont get treatment because i have 3 kids and i need to be alert and have money.i cant be on pills and be broked...i pay rent and bills,but it is bothersome.
I just want to point out to viewers that this is from 1996, a lot has happened in 16 years. They don't even call it madness anymore, it's mental health problem or mental illness. And it's not always something that's in the genes, it can develop and be caused by other ways aswell. I am very thankful for this video though and I believe I will learn a lot from it :) thanks so much for sharing.
The medication for mental illness is very expensive. If you can't hold a job, how are you to pay for the medications? There is no help for people that can't afford their medicines. At least the proper dosage. Medical supply may hand out samples, but that is just the beginning.

It all boils down to the fact that no one really gives a fuck about anyone else.Sure they may profess to care and may even work in a profession where they appear to care,but underneath no one cares about anyone else other than themselves.If people truly cared about others there would be no such things as famine,poverty,crime.If people in society truly cared for each other the world would be an entirely different place.
@silver760 Unfortunately I have to agree that there is no shortage of people like that but you obviously are disgusted by the lack of empathy people have for each other and it feel it is wrong. YOU care otherwise you wouldn't think there was any need for change and that is proof that some people do give a fuck about others. I'm not Mother Theresa but I do give a shit. Try not to let the evil men do become all you see and make your life joyless in the process.
@gunneyfish I had empathy and cared deeply for others and their wellbeing in the past,the only problem was that the vast majority of people took the piss They never showed any gratitude and took everything they possibly could.A normal person would thank someone for their kindness and at least respond in a similar way.I have well and truly been used and abused in the past,I prefer to look after animals they always show gratitude and affection to those that have helped them.They never rob,lie,etc

@silver760 Do you really believe that NO ONE gives a fuck about ANYONE else? It's true that everyone does not truly care about everyone, which contributes to famine, poverty, and crime. However, Most people truly care about at least one other person. I don't see how anyone could deny that.

And this is exactly what a depressed CEO said in other video about depression 'Depression: Out of the Shadows - 11ª parte: Recuperação': "you focus internally - and that's part of the disease. your focus on yourself. it's simple but complicated... focusing outward on other people is THE most important thing you can do when you're depressed."
And so it seems this is all exactly about what has been the biggest quest for humanity as whole... to learn to love.
Mental illness like schizophrenia are actual physical disorders of the brain, it has to do with chemical imbalances. Nobody EVER chooses mental illness, thats a ridiculous attitude to take. And medication is the only way these poor people can have any semblance of a normal life. These meds also have unpleasant side effects, which is why many people stop taking them. But its all we have right now for treatment.
I think she's immitating her mother, she WANTS to end up like her, which is people looking after you and being worried about you and caring about you. She's probably not fully concious of that desire
Those meds aren't meant to help you "stop hearing voices," they're meant to cripple you psychologically so that you need to take them til you die, they want a "lifetime customer" out of you. This isn't a mistake someone is making, its deliberate.
