Well the thing with the gunboats and the obelisk is that they made this happen intentionally. take a look at the mission briefing during the game . It says something like "And keep an eye at a new weapon of the nod..." bet they mean the obelisk, it wasnt mentioned in the video, so that the people go "WTF!?" when the obelisk fucks up the gunboats...

So I was playing through this level again and my little infantry squad failed to kill the two Nod turrets. No problem I thought, I'll just get a Chinook later and send more guys down to finish the last turret. 30 minutes later, the Nod base is dead, no Chinook. GDI Gunboats are patrolling the river and aiming their missile launchers at the last turret and not firing. No Orcas until next mission. A-10 airstrike takes it down to half health.... -_-

I belive it had something to do with Tiberium itself, it's a non-carbon crystal wich absorbs carbon, or something like that. I belive Dr. Mobius explained it in one of the mission movies.

There seems to be a misunderstanding here. This is GDI Mission 9, Hungary. There exists no river under the name "Hiverian", it is most likely a misspelling of the Danube river (also known as Danuvian). Speaking of Hungary, that has to be the river which would allow manouvering of the gunboats. Also, on the war theater map, the point of conflict is set to Budapest, which makes it all the more obvious. As a previous commenter added, make-shift video from '93 Las Vegas :) But it's still OK, I think

Yeah I played this when I was like 7 so I'm still learning everything because I never understood any of it being that young. I always thought the gunboats were supposed to actually do something and started the mission over countless times trying to get them to work. I never realized they were meant to die as part of the drama! haha man. I love C&C. Their storyline and lice action sequences are unsurpassed in a game... I wish Westwood were still around to make the new ones. =(

Fun Fact: You can save the Gunboat column, but in involves not attacking any of the river turrents so they don't storm out and get slaughtered. Although keep in mind that the Gunboats don't attack any units either so they were ment to be cannon fodder for the Obelisk.

When I first played this game, I was completely in the dark over some of the things that happened (Kinda young, and didn't read the whole manual I think). So when the shit hit the fan, and Sheppard disappeared, Carter was there to back me up. I didn't even realize he had tiberium poisoning (He says T Poison, but it isn't fully obvious) So when He was gone the next mission a pang of sadness hit me.
