When I was at HSBC, I can tell you that my counterparts in HK would be pretty clear about their feelings towards the mainlanders. You dont understand the implications of an HKID card? When the British left Hong Kong after the 100 year lease expired, the people of HK demanded some autonomy from the rest of China. They demanded limited integration from the Mainland. The Chinese government understood and obliged. It is to prevent the mainlanders from integrating with the British influenced culture. You need more than a shared passport or facial similarities to forge a kinship. Like I said, I worked for HSBC for 10 years and my collegues in Hong Kong would respond to your ascertions as something that is typical of somebody who hails from the mainland. None would have anything to do with you. And yes, the HKID, as explained via media and my collegues in HK is all about preventing integration of mainlanders. There is no other country in the world that bars residency of certain people.

Descriminating against Indians, and other ethnic groups, but the mainlanders, who were the most descriminated against, were omitted from the list of identified ethnics. Well, if you look at the quota for visits to HK from Mainlanders, it is restricted to 150 permits per day. The condition set to obtain such a permit revolves around your qualification to reside there. 1500 Mainlanders are PROSECTUTED every year on average w many who actually were holding a VISA for entry. HK has errected a massive barrier and border enforcement around HK and is stepping up harsh penalties against mainlanders who believe they have a right to enter because they are "chinese".

Also, consider how financially restrictive it is for a typical mainlander to enter HK under the investment class...they need a shit load of money well beyond their means. Skilled class?...think again, the skilled class is not exclusive to mainlanders, any skilled worker from abroad has EQUAL opportunity under that class. My wife is from Mexico....in less than 1 week, she secured a lucrative career here. She beat out many applicants who had demonstrated credentials higher than hers....its not just what you know, its about who you are, and who you know. The degree...opens doors, the rest is about your character.

HK people may face discrimination on the mainland but its usually brushed aside as a non issue because somebody of that stature is only interested in doing business on the Mainland just as we in the West are....the slave trade is rich on the Mainland.
