  • Everyone: YES, I realize pizza and shit like that has a lot of calories and isn't very filling, which makes bulking easier. But that that isn't the only way in the world to bulk up. If your health comes first, you're better off eating a variety of whole foods like nuts, lean meat and veggies

    Hell, learn to cook pizza or burgers yourself with quality ingredients. At least that way you know you aren't eating materials are probably more suited to be in a university chemistry lab than in your body.

I'm soon 18 and I've started to eat a lot more and been working out a bit (although a bit excited and been on a break since I found I'd been overtraining). Is it safe to do every second day push - pull - legs -weekend off? I'd like to look a bit better and I do already but I'm scared if I hinder my growth or risk major injuries that will hurt me later on.

A kid who's been skinny all his life because he habitually eats 1000 calories every day is going to have an easier time getting bigger if he's eating unfilling things and getting a lot of liquid calories. I'm personally trying to minimize my fat gain (I was what many refer to as "skinnyfat" when I started lifting and eating right), so I'm eating a fairly small caloric surplus mostly consisting of whole foods. It's a matter of what your goals are, I guess.

I have to eat a lot of macdonalds and things just to get more than 3000 calories, however i dont seem to put on any fat even when eating all that junk but i have lately seemed to pack on muscle instead :)

  • @MercuryClock you can get extra calories form clean foods, its just easier to go out and get a burger than it is to boil up a sweet potato and cook up some lean chicken for one of your meals. but you don't have to eat junk food, you can keep your diet clean and still be at a calorie surplus, its just that junk food tastes better sometimes haha

    A) I honestly believe I could never get tired of chicken breast. That's just me, of course, because it's one of my favorite foods ever. Season, broil, and you've got a delicious, inexpensive meal.

    B) You can and should eat a lot more than brown rice and chicken breasts. Lean beef, fish, fruits, vegetables, dairy, eggs, oatmeal, legumes, nuts... there's no reason that eating healthy should be boring. I just wish lean beef and fish weren't so expensive.

  • @MercuryClock you can but clean foods aren't as calorie dense so you'd have to eat a shit ton more. you'd need to eat like 5lbs of boneless skinless chicken breasts to match the same amount of calories in a fast food burger.

  • @deadpan237 The difference isn't that extreme, honestly. Five pounds of chicken breast that was grilled or roasted would come out to about 3600 calories, give or take. A typical fast-food meal doesn't have that much, let alone one burger. If you want a high-calorie clean meal you could eat a peanut butter sandwich (natty pb and whole-grain bread, of course), and wash it down with a glass of milk or two. Hell, choking down like a a quarter-cup of olive/flaxseed oil or something isn't a bad idea.

  • @MercuryClock Yeah I exaggerated a bit, also I was going by uncooked weight. Still though, burgers can reach 1000 calories easily. I know a BK double stacker is 500 calories and I can eat like 4 of those in a sitting, whereas a chicken breast has about the same amount of calories and I can only eat one or two.

    Milk isn't really a "clean" food, it's full of sugar (lactose) and saturated fat (if you go with whole milk). Plus some people say it can cause gyno in excessive amounts.

  • @MercuryClock Also you can typically eat more sugary, unhealthy foods because of insulin resistance and other hormonal changes that trick your body into thinking you're not full.

  • @MercuryClock you can!! Its called clean bulking, you really can build maximum muscle with very little fat if you eat clean calories (not icecream and pizza). Then your building mostly muscle and very little fat, you look better the whole time cause you dont get a really high body fat and then its much easier to cut because you have less fat to lose !

  • @reallyletsdoit ...... A calorie is a calorie. Clean bulking is just not eating as much as a dirty bulk.... If I eat 500 calories of ice cream, and 500 calories of fruit, it doesn't make a difference. It's not necessarily the foods that your eating

It's like this: if you want an extra 1,000 some calories in a day you could eat a clean Extra meal of mashed potatoes and a whole can of green beans and a spinach salad and a plate of brown rice and beans OR you could eat just one slice of pizza with the works. That's just an example, tho.

  • @MercuryClock They can. I have been eating a lot of organic peanut butter and drinking a bit of olive oil (dead serious). Best ways to get your calories up from healthy fats. It's not worth getting your calories up from something like fried chicken which is absolutely terrible for your heart.

  • @MercuryClock When your calories are coming from fast food and saturated fats, not only is it harder for your body to get get of those fats then healthy fats but it also blocks up your arteries a little bit causing protein to travel slower to the muscles meaning it takes much longer for you muscle to recover.

  • @MercuryClock I eat a whole lot of clean food per day. A whooole lot! But I still can't get enough nutrients in my body so I supplement with proteinshakes.

    If you eat more simple carbs than complex carbs than you can eat more. Because lots of complex carbs and fibers you will be full for a longer period of time. You just can't eat as much.

  • @MercuryClock it's harder to eat cleaner foods because they ususally contain fiber and other stuff that holds your stomach back. But if you can find a way to do it with clean foods then it makes no difference.

  • I gained 5 lbs this week following what you guys said. I been training 5x5 so I'm strong as hell, but you can't see it. Switched it up to 6-12 reps and now it's showing. Atleast 2lbs of it is muscle too I can feel the density.

  • You know this isn't rocket science.... let's say your basic calorie need is like 2000kcal, just add 1-200 kcal and see how much you gain per month. If you can stay within 500kcal per week,s that's 0.5kg of weight gain per month, not a bad idea.

    I'm doing 2200kcal per day, within a month i'm gonna see how much i've gained, if it's too much i'll just lower the intake.

    Bulking doesn't mean you're suppose to eat kilos of fat per week, were talking about max 1-400kcal, otherwise it's just fat.

  • i would follow this advise if you are an ectomorph but if youre an endomorph or a mesomorph, you shouldn't have any problem putting on muscle by bulking clean. Just make sure you get your protein, good carbs and an excess in calories.

  • @RoYoTV yeah that sounds like a solid nutrition base and workout routine. Even with solid nutrition you might start to see a lot fat gains so just make sure to monitor how many calories a day you are getting and adjust to your liking. You want to gain the max amount of muscle while minimizing the fat but don't cut your calories too much or you won't gain any muscle!

  • @skillz996 after you bult up cut your calories and carbs do a lil cardio and dont eat any juck you should lean out real good and stick to doing heavy weight low reps even while leaning out you dont want to lose any muscle or strenght which you will lose some strenght while losing weight but if your having right amount of nutrition pound for pound you will be stronger.

  • I went through a bulking phase that ended up turning into bienging then I ended up gaining like 8 lbs a week mostly water and fat :(.

  • You can get the same results as bulking/cutting over time just eating a slight caloric surplus and lifting heavy without anywhere near the fat gains as a bulk. People only do it in phases because they see visible changes in their body faster and it keeps them motivated. when in reality you dont have to intentionally bulk or cut to improve your body. You're only going to gain 10 or 15 pounds of lean muscle a year either way without steroids, so why gain a lot of excess fat along with it?

  • Hey personally I don't think you need the bad carbs, just add about three hundred calories of good carbs spread throughout six evenly spaced meals .. I read in the comments before and I know from a pretty reliable source that the excess of calories shouldn't be more then maybe three hundred because the rest after the three hundred a day will turn into fat , but if u do three hundred clean carb , gain more muscle then fat , although fat gain will still happen just not nearly as much.

    So instead of eating the traditional 500 calories over your daily maintenance caloric requirement, i would suggest to eat only 150-200...reason being is because say you eat 500 calories over each day...your body will probably not use all of those calories for muscle building...instead your body may only use only 200 and it will leave the rest

    of those 300 calories for fat gain...so if you bulk up and notice you are gaining more fat and start to notice a pattern it would be a good idea to only eat about 150-200 calories over your maintenance caloric requirement as that way your gains wil be pretty lean and there will not be too much fat left over for fat gain.

    what do you guys think? IMO this is a better method of bulking. But ultimately its up to the person to decide cuz they have to look back at previous bulking phases

  • I'm 6'2 & 300lbs, I believe I'm a Mesomorph, Dominican, natural strong build. Last summer I came down to 288lbs, & now after this winter I'm back to 300lbs. Getting tired of every summer not being able to take of my shirt because of my man boobs. I don't like 300lbs again because of my natural build but I am still very over weight. Anyone wanna chime in & give me some tips?

I'm 18 turning 19 soon, going to college for Network Engineering is my main goal, but aside from that I want to make a total body transformation & drop my weight from 300lbs between 190 and 220 lbs. That GQ look, if you will, lol. As for the color of my skin, no at all actually. I'm a very light brown.

  • I think it's better to just strip down the body fat first and build from scratch. I speak from experience i was 6'3 165 10 years ago. i put on a lot of bulk and then had to cut it down years later. i think ur better off starting lean and gaining gradually.

I know a lot people --especially hard gainers will be like "yeah, I am going to eat 5000 calories a day", but they only weigh 150 lbs. They don't need that many! They just need to make sure the food is quality in terms of protein, carbs etc..

  • I really believe this.. I tried to cut out on the burgers and stuff like that and it made me feel weaker, and it seemed like putting on muscle was going to take forever. Not to mention the progress trying to gain weight was just taking way too long... Clean bulking works for some people I guess but I do believe that you have to add some junk like burgers and stuff like that for faster results.

  • Well in regards to weight you can't really tell.... I'm about 6'2 192 now..... a little over 4 months ago I was 207- 212 and I still look the same now when I have clothes on, I just lost a layer of fat over my body.... So being your size with a shirt on a person can assume your like 220 - 230
